...? coffee...isn't exactly a sedative.

You know you're addicted when you get more excited about the PT you just got than the date you have tonight.

Your girlfriend begins to call herself a "Barrow-widow". Beren, that is really alarming! Though not having a boyfriend because your social life is Barrow-based is just as bad... smilies/rolleyes.gif And also, using the prefix barrow- on every possible word is a bit worrying. Like having a word file called Barrow-Quotes on your PC, full of BDers' sigs and other quotes from the Downs.

The highlight of your day, even though you just took the SAT II's and think you did really well, was seeing that the X-Men-related locations are increasing, even though they are all ganging up on you. You also go around looking at people's Locations just for fun.

EDIT: Like having a word file called Barrow-Quotes on your PC, full of BDers' sigs and other quotes from the Downs.
I have one called "Barrow Downs Chat Quotes", so don't be alarmed. And now, for the record, with size 7 font, 1/2 inch margins on every side, and three columns, it is now nearly two full pages long.

I didn't have a date, but I did get pretty darn excited about the PT.

I also have a Barrow-Quotes file, and it is also very long. smilies/wink.gif

Yes! Jumping up and down and squealing when you get a PT is a bad sign. Especially when your sister is having all her friends around for her birthday party...

SOPHIA: coughcough CONGRATULATIONS! I thought I shouldn't make a post on the RTC discussion thread just for that.

you talk to the people on here more then your own family. smilies/wink.gif

when you are in a resteraunt and suddenly have a good idea for a post, you imediatly pull out a pen and start writing on a napkin... despite the odd looks you are given by your friends.

you've decided to skip showers to have more time on here (I'm not quite at that point!)

Although people (in real life)seem to think you are the most obsessed person on this planet, you feel ashamed that you are not as obsessed as your fellow BD'ers

You're at a wedding, and you suddenly get an idea for your next RPG post, and start writing it all over the program.

Your home-page is NOT the Downs, to save bandwidth (I'm a good g.irl, amn't I?) but is your email, and you immediately go to the threads that you have posted on, via saved messages with the links to them.

You visit the airport and begin to daydream about the day you will be meeting a fellow Downer. Guilty as charged smilies/biggrin.gif I suppose it counts as addiction to spend several hours almost every week where your mum works, because they've got broadband, so you can stay on the Downs as long as you like?

And printing out copies of the already mentioned Barrow-Quotes file, giving them to your friends who like Tolkien and saying "See? This is a great place, join!"

You've just started at a new school where you don't know anyone, and wish you'd had some friends there with you, half of the people you think of are Barrow-Downers.

You get more upset if you say something stupid here than in real life, and here you can just delete the post!

When you convince two people who had never heard of the Downs to join just on your say-so.

I'm currently in the process of doing something similar to that.

I just met a girl in my Geometry class who's is just as obesessed as I. When she showed me her One Ring, her LOTR covered notebook, and the FOTR book she was rereading, and then told me she once attempted learning Elvish, I immediately wrote down the BD website on her notebook. She seemed interested in checking out this site, so now I just have to convince her to visit it and register.

When you convince most of the 11th grade at your school to dress as Hobbits next Monday to celebrate Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday
This week is homecoming week at my school and every day we have to dress up as something different. I should have convinced student council to make Monday Hobbit Day. Unfortunately, it's too late for that. Monday is Hawaiian Day. smilies/frown.gif

This thread is hysterical!

Okay, my pitiful contribution:

*After just 1 day of being on this site, you're instantly hooked

*When you spend thousands of dollars buying a new computer so that Barrowdowns will load faster

*You wake up at 11am, go see ROTK for the fourth time, come home, log onto Barrowdowns, and at approx. 11pm you realize that all you've had to eat the entire day was 1/2 a bag of greasy, buttery popcorn. You then realize that food is no longer important, and stay on til about 12:30. **my life story**

*Sleep? What is this "sleep" you speak of? We of this age know nothing of "sleep." The only proper use for that word is when it is proceeded by "I'll catch up on my" and followed by "in study hall." And that's only if you can't get to the library to use the computers!

I read this thread when I first joined BD this summer, and thought, "This is gonna be me, isn't it?" I bet after these past four months I can come up with ten signs, no sweat. All of these are taken from real experience, except #2. When I get to #2, it's time to check myself into the loony bin. (Or dump my boyfriend. smilies/wink.gif )

1. Your friends limit you to one Barrowdowns related exclamation per day.

2. Barrowdowns takes precedence over calling your boyfriend.

3. You've redecorated your room in Black, Green, and Gold to make you feel more at home.

4. You need more school notebooks halfway through the semester, not because your classes have covered that much information, but because you've written that many posts in the back of your notebooks.

5. You're not only familiar with the terms "Legolover" and "Leggybopper", you've applied them in real life.

6. The only time you're not on the Barrows is when you're reading Tolkien's books, or Walking to Rivendell.

7. Your spell checker is filled with Elvish words.

8. You carry on a lengthily hypothetical discussion with your friends, never revealing to them that the hypothetocity is in fact your latest RPG situation.

9. Everything you see reminds you of someone on barrowdowns. (Pepsi Blue, Fire, Disco anything, the Wave, Enni Minne Minny Moe...)

10. You carry a notebook with you everywhere, in case you think of another top ten sign.

Here's mine:

---
You were a member of bd back when it was on ezboard, but finally managed to quit (in order to spend time actually studying). The other day, you recall a discussion about balrogs (not/) having wings. The discussion included a comment about a flying black shadow-thing mentioned in HoME which could possibly have been a balrog. What sticks in your mind is the reply, "no, that was Tom Bombadil on his hanglider".

You proceed to google 'bombadil hanglider' to try and find out who made this joke. Nothing turns up, and in desparation you enter barrowdowns.com into your browser.

Little do you know your peril...
---

And here I am again. Let this be a lesson to you all - never think you've truly quit the downs until you're dead. And probably not even then.

ps: do any long-time bd-ers know who made the bombadil hanglider joke? It will bug me forever, at this rate.

-In one window of your computer you're doing a couple of hours of work for your father - and plan to use the money to buy a HoME.
-In another you're looking up pictures and maps to print-out and put on your walls. No need to ask what -type- of maps.

Oh dear, not the House Elves! We don't need the Barrow Downs chapter of SPEW going up any time soon! (HP joke, BTW.)

I assume that the Elves had their own hierarchy, so there were probably Elven servants running about the place, making beds, cleaning rooms, washing dishes, and suchlike.

I had a hilarious Barrow-Downs moment today. One of my friends asked me what Beren's title was, and instead of saying "Erchamion" I said "Master of the Secret Fire."

*smacks herself*

EDIT: I just had another one. A friend of mine was talking about the Barrow Downs (from the Books) and she asked me where the wights came from, and I blurted out "Why, all over the world!" It was then that I realized that she didn't mean the forum.

When you actually scare your friends (and not just normal friends either, proper die-hard Lord of the Rings-mad friends) by telling them a joke that was made by another Downer and laughing uncontrollably while they sit there and raise their eyebrows at you.

It was Nilpaurion Felagund who did it. I called Faramir's second-in-command Bruce.

Is it strange that I've been following this thread for a very long time, yet this is my first post on it?

A new list!

Top Ten Signs You're Addicted to the Matrix...

10. You see a license plate, and the number reminds you of a Barrowdowner. I just saw one with the number "447" and Turambar just popped into my mind. Weird...

9. You've memorised quite a lot of the Downer's member numbers.

8. You compute the number of your posts. I posted 50 a week during the time between Shadiness and Princedom. If I did that rate during my newbie days, I would have been a Ghost Prince by mid-July, and now I would have 1700 posts!

7. You saw Lush many times! or at least a black cat that reminds you of her...in that case, you remember Barrowdowners when you see their avatars in real life.

6. The first question your sister ask when you pick her up from the dorm is, "So, what happened on the Downs?"

5. 1 in 5 sentences you hear reminds you of LotR...or Barrowdowns.

4. On your way home yesterday, you see the person beside you reading RotK. You were sorely tempted to tell him about the Downs. What kept you from it? You were writing this post!

3. You authorised a manhunt for your "friend" who still hasn't returned your Silm(actually, it's my sister's...) You can't make decent post about the First Age without it!

2. You convince your dad(who's currently reading TTT) to join the Downs, and hopefully become a mod! smilies/evil.gif

and...

1. You spent less time compiling this list than the first one.

4. You need more school notebooks halfway through the semester, not because your classes have covered that much information, but because you've written that many posts in the back of your notebooks.
As a matter of fact I happen to be on my 2nd this school year, and its aptly named "My Book of Wisdom Vol. 3".(Vol. 1 was end of last year.)

5. You're not only familiar with the terms "Legolover" and "Leggybopper", you've applied them in real life.

*hangs head in shame* I know, I know,.....

1.You constantly preview your posts before posting them because of the typo forum.
2.You look for a new avatar while waiting for the Downs to load.
3.You end all your posts now with "Black and green on my computer screen." because it is so true. *see below*

I'm not addicted. No, not at all. smilies/wink.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif You start mistaking words. I've done that. On a street sign I saw Legolas instead of Las Olas.
---
Some new ones:
~You see the avatar of someone on the Downs and know exactly who it is yet you can't remember the names of people you see and talk to at least once a week.
~When you see the font used in the Forum used somewhere else you think it should be in green and black.
~You have been here for less than a month and you are no longer scared of Downers. In fact, if you are scared, it is only because you realize you are exactly like them.
~This one is more LotR than BD. You have waken up in the morning somewhat surprised that you do not have hairy hobbit feet.
~You have (innumerable times) received strange looks from people who barely know you after finding out that you have read LotR several times. (From experience: they look at you even stranger if you happen to have the 1000+ page book of all three with you)

Be proud! (Feet!)

You have a small notebook that you use for writing posts when you can't get to a computer, and you carry it everywhere because of how often something will happen that makes you think of something you want to post, and you don't want to forget. When you are bored in class you dig through your brain for something to write, and get frustrated if you can't think of anything, and sometimes (OK, often) you are writing in this little notebook instead of paying attention. (Teachers think you're taking notes!) You have become very skilled at drawing smilies, because when writing posts you draw in the smilies you want to use.

You have learnt that even on your 33k-max modem connection, you can access the Downs quickly if you turn images and stylesheets off, and log on at weird times when fewer people are using the internet. Obviously, this approach makes image-based threads dificult to enjoy.
You read about people composing posts in the back of their lecture pads and think: that is genius.
You spend much time listening to the RotK soundtrack in order to make detailed analysis of "Into the West" in the movies forum.
You lie awake at night thinking about a post someone else has made, and how you can reply in a way which is both witty and includes detailed Tolkien reference.
Your post count fascinates you, as does speculation and calculation about how long it will take you to earn a PT.
You are moved almost to tears when you come across a thread which was started in 2000-ish about "what you want to see in the movies", and the original poster who wanted to see the Rohirrim cry death! with one voice and terrible posted again after the release of RotK to say "whoohoo!" (sorry, I can't remember who it was: burra, maybe? I'd look it up if I had a faster net connection)
Checking the Downs falls under the checking-email category of high-frequency net activity.
Instead of angsting about whether you're as good-looking as your friends, you angst about not being as amazingly clever and knowledgeable as your fellow BDers.
You don't write blog entries about current events, you write them about BD discussions.
You'd write more blog entries about the Downs, but you're too busy Downsing.

Classic.

-You are extremely unhappy with the fact that although you've recommended the Downs to just about all of your Tolkien-fan friends, they all have excuses not to come here (perhaps they're afraid they'll end up like me)!

The book was Polgara the Sorceress, by David Eddings. To understand this book you first have to read The Belgariad, beginning with Pawn of Prophecy. If you read the Mallorean after that it's best. Anyway, the character was Salmissra. (Everdawn, is there any chance you chose your avatar because you really look something like that? And if you did, can you act? Because I intend to direct a movie (actually several, no way it could be done as one) of the Belgariad someday, and I'm already trying to pick a first choice for all the characters.)

6. You have ditched at least three weeks worth of aerobic class because you were inbroiled in a heated debate in the chat room

7. Your last resolutions involved getting to bed earlier or sleeping in longer because you have had less than six hours of sleep repeatedly because you had to prove that you were right whether elves could dream or some other equally obscure topic

8. The last pen you bought had to write in green ink because your eyes will now only read green letters

9. The last time you HAD to leave the Bd was because of a bodily function, so you now are considering buying a hand-held computer (forget the cost, you'll sell all books except LOTR and all other editions-wait, you only own 4 other books) so as to never be seperated from the Bd

and last but not least

10. You own at least five Bd shirts so as to never have to wear something else (not that you don't, it's just easier to corrdinate green when that's all you own)

When you think about the Downs at the oddest times.

When your away somewhere your first thought is 'I can't wait to get home to see whats going on at the Downs!'

When you start to tell your friends something funny from the Downs then quit because they give you "that look".They just don't understand :( .

Yes, I do that! I don't think I could explain the smell, though.

'Tis indeed true, however, that active participation in the Quiz Room bumps up the post-count. After a year here, I had well over 2,000 posts, and many of those were courtesy of my extended and active participation in the Quiz Room shortly after I first arrived.

But Everdawn is right. It's not the size of your post-count that matters, but what you do with it. :D

You also know you're addicted when you start hallucinating that you see your or your friends' screen names on street signs. I thought Maeggaladiel was written on a bilboard. Then I saw that it was actually "Megabucks." Hey, they both have a capital M, an e, and a g!! Close enough.

A very disturbing moment for me was when my brother tried to catch my attention by claiming to be the Saucepan Man. The most worrisome part being that I had no idea he knew anything about the Downs, except for my vague mutterings about werewolf games. My brother obviously stalks me.

I find, though, that threatening teachers and upcoming exams still have some influence on me and therefore I must conclude that I am not hopelessly addicted yet.
