As well, every time AMP is mentioned in my AP Bio class, I think LMP.
Well, everytime I see the abbreviations for World War Two (I forget how to do the roman numerals) I automatically wonder how Werewolf Two (WW2) got into my history book.

My main symptom is I keep wanting to sign myself "Mith" elsewhere....and noone in my real life would have a clue...
I have solved that wee little problem. I created two accounts for MSN which is the only other thing that requires signing in.
I just watched a Charlie Brown movie. Whenever they would call Snoopy by his name I'd be thinking "But his name is Eomer."
Now there's something I've done when I watched the comercials for those movies. And every time I take out a pan I think of SpM and everytime I see the Shrek movies Esty pops into my head.
Another symptom (for me at least) is when your at school talikng to your friends and you zone out and start thinking "Hmmm... I wonder who's posted on *Insert thread name here*?"

When you discover "Formbi" in a book, and immediately assume that you have found the Star Wars equivalent of your 'Downs username...
My main symptom is I keep wanting to sign myself "Mith" elsewhere....and noone in my real life would have a clue...
Obviously I was psychic and had anticipated this problem when I joined up, therefore choosing my own name for a nickname! (Or, you know, I just have no imagination).
You realise you're addicted though when the site takes precedence over practically anything else in your life. Eating, sleeping, talking to friends, doing all that nasty homework - guilty of all. 2am I went to bed last night after getting hooked reading an old thread.
And after reading through here, what is this Chat that people speak of?

I'm sure that's not as dorky, or as bad as, calling work saying you're sick. :p

When you doze off during an afternoon lecture (because it was too late last night and too early this morning) and you wake up suddenly when you hear someone say Barrow Downs from faraway, you ask your neighbor for confirmation on what you have just heard and get informed you just missed a very interesting tutorial in which you were supposed to analyze Gaelic Folk tales and find comparisons with The Lord of the Rings.
This shows definite obsessiveness because
1) I instantly realized it was the first time I ever heard anyone say the Barrow Downs out loud - a realization which made me grin rather foolishly.
2) Because I immediately thought I could use this incident as an excuse to post something non-substantial here.
3) I only started caring about missing the class when I was already halfway through typing this post.

Well, I would say that doing this (http://fakeurl.com/caladre/people/thisthing.JPG) definitely shows an extreme case of obsessiveness (or an extreme case of , "Nerdy Child with too Much Time on her Hands".)
Of course this leads to all sort of interesting discussions, like Balancing Barrowdowners and Barrowdowner Reactions.

So I'm Lanthanum?
The metal reacts directly with elemental carbon, nitrogen, boron, selenium, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, and with halogens. It is a component of, misch metal (used for making lighter flints).
Lanthanum and Dysprosium are apparently both radioactive and often found in combination, being difficult to split apart. I like the sound of that - it's potentially evil as you say. ;)

Not surprisingly, the phantom is Helium, validating all those "hot air" comments.
Actually, I chose Helium for Phantom because the symbol abbreviation for it is "He." Of, course, "He" does tend towards some religious connotations (i.e. "He" refers to God.) Which leaves me with a terrifying conclusion to Fordim's question (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=12387). ;)

The posts concerning the elements listed on the periodic table have sparked my curiosity. I had no idea what "Es" is (as far as chemistry goes, that is - I'm familiar with Freud's usage of the German word as a psychological definition - an interesting connection, actually!), so I googled it and found some fascinating information. Einsteinium is radioactive rare earth metal named after Albert Einstein. It is of no commercial importance and only a few of its compounds are known. Hmmm, no commercial importance, only few compounds known - that has an uncanny relativity to me! Flattering to be named after a genius, of course - and that in a year dedicated to his memory. It was identified in debris from the first large thermonuclear explosion - now what could that say about me? Actually, there is something interesting in there.
Melting point, boiling point, density and color unknown - hmmm... (The latter is probably metallic and silvery white or grey.) Classification: Metallic.
Thanks for an interesting excursion into an area I do not normally enter voluntarily, Abercrombie! When I have time, I'll explore the other elements and their connections to the Barrowdowners you chose to be represented by them.

Don't strain yourself too hard my dearie. I simply chose BDer's for their element because the symbol abbreviation was similar to their name. Mg for Mormegil; Fm for Formendacil. So, if you can actually find any similarities between the element and the BDer, (all the more points to you) but it's purely coincidental.

I see I'm the last of the Actinide series. Geesh, I don't want to be a transition metal. They're all either very much confusing with all their oxidation states, hopelessly unreactive, or prone to spontaneous decay.
But does that mean some BDers can undergo decay and transform into some other BDer?

Ooh I have (rather late) discovered the periodic table. I don't think I will try again to set up an avatar because Meitneriun is somewhat elusive in appearance
meitnerium.
Standard state: presumably a solid at 298 K
Colour: unknown, but probably metallic and silvery white or grey in appearance
Classification: Metallic
Availability:
Element 109, meitnerium, is a synthetic element that is not present in the environment at all.
Isolation
Only a few atoms of element 109, meitnerium, have ever been made. The first atoms were made through a nuclear reaction involving fusion of an isotope of bismuth, 209Bi, with one of iron, 58Fe.
209Bi + 58Fe 266Mt + 1n
Isolation of an observable quantity of meitnerium has never been achieved, and may well never be. This is because meitnerium decays very rapidly through the emission of a-particles.
Very appropriate....grey, dilapidated ... I dispute the synthetic ......

5. Same person above has the most number of BD predictions. Tight race for second place between Lhuna and tgwbs.

You've been awake for about 30 hours, you're dead tired and have reading to do, and you're still clicking the refresh button on the forums index.
You work on posts by saving them in your email so that so you can work on them while away from home.
You once typed a fairly long RPG post on your tiny PDA screen while you were supposed to be listening to a lecture. Granted, it was a very borrrrring lecture that I had absolutely no interest in hearing and that had no educational value for me, but still... :)

1) When you have a folder on your computer named 'Werewolves'.
2) When you jump up every time you hear someone say anything vaguely Tolkien-related.
3) When you try to think of a way to subtly incorporate in a post that you have finished the Silmarillion, just so you will always remember the exact date.
4) When you know the screen-names of all members on the first and second page by heart, including their personal titles - if they have one. (Though this is not as obsessive as it may sound - I have an extremely good memory when it comes to names. No really!).
5) When, on a rather uneventful night, you start reading ancient threads to know what all the 'oldies' are always referring to. I must say, it was a revelation. It's quite unbelievable to see how many Downers, now greatly esteemed for their eloquence, used to type things as lol and u every once in a while (I shan't name names). And ha - he might hate me forever for this - but the guy who be short was so cute!
6) When you start writing posts like these, just to have something to say even though you are too weary to make much sense.
7) When a 'Downers MSN group' and 'Downs Time' sound strangely appealing.
I'm sure there are more points to come some other day. :o
--
P.S. I know, I know. I cringe when I read some of my earlier posts as well.
P.P.S. I am clearly guilty of all the above, with the possible exception of the first since I just saw it isn't actually called werewolves, but plain wolves.

When your RL friends know of certain 'Downers by name and sometimes location though they have no interest in Tolkien or his work, it perhaps goes to show that your hobbies have infiltrated your daily life.
"What do you mean you don't know much about Catholic dogma?" she asked, surprised that she'd asked a random question and I didn't actually know the answer. Brainwave! "Can't you ask that guy? What's his name... the Canadian one. PM him."
"Why do you keep hitting refresh?" she asked in my dorm room, irritated because my mind is on things I've not disclosed, rather than on the conversation I'm almost having with her.
"I'm waiting for a response." I reply simply, irritated that I'm not multi-tasking as efficiently as usual: she actually noticed that I'm doing like ten things at once.
"Oh, did you send that draft to LMP, then?" She figured it out.
"What do you mean mormegil helped get you killed?" she asked in the middle of campus on our way to the post office by way of a large group of lacrosse players. Stares ensued, though perhaps that had more to do with me tripping over my own foot, my flip flop mysteriously flying away, me chasing it, spinning excitedly (due to non-wolvery) and nearly falling over again, all when completely sober. "Oooh, next time you're up against him, you should kill him. What's he thinking. Him and Boro... So what if the Seer dreamt of you! They should have let you live. I was living vicariously through you!"
"You could always register and play." I offered. It would be fun to play a game against someone I'm with every day.
"No!" she responded really quickly. "The phantom would kill me."
"Of course he wouldn't. He hasn't played lately. He's been busy." My logic was infallible.
"Then TORE would. You remember when the two of you almost pulled off that trick in WWJ. He's smart! Or Nogrod would kill me. I'm quiet and nobody knows me. They'd kill me to simplify things." A dean walked by with the president of the school. They politely pretended not to hear.
"Somebody actually bothered debating the existence of good and evil with you? Oh, it was Eomer. Never mind." She rolled her eyes and changed the subject deftly to that paper we should have written while I was busy explaining the non-existence of social constructs.
 Maybe I should get a life.

When your RL friends know of certain 'Downers by name and sometimes location though they have no interest in Tolkien or his work, it perhaps goes to show that your hobbies have infiltrated your daily life.
On a related note, when your sister (who doesn't even visit this site) asks you what your RP characters have been up to lately and what the RP characters of other Downers (identified by name) have been doing.
When your other sister walks up to you whenever you're on the computer and says "Let me guess. The Barrow-Downs." And she's usually right!
When a major motivation for you to register your Pocket PC with the university computer services department is so that you can check the Downs on any slow moment during your workday, even if the screen is too tiny to post efficiently. And when you're annoyed with the new site where you're working, even though it's a really nice place, because it doesn't provide a wireless network for said activity.

The whole "you know you're addicted to the Barrow-Downs when you only have 'Downers on your MSN list" has been done before... but I sadly never realized how true this was for me until I organised my contacts into categories yesterday (for the first time). The breakdown was, as follows:
'Downer Girls: 9
'Downer Guys: 5
Not 'Downers: 5
But if you want to know what's REALLY pathetic about that... of those five "Not-Downers" (and yes, those are the categories I named them and moved them into), one is a sibling, and so doesn't count- and Two of them are people who are friends of 'Downers. Had it not been for the 'Downs and the people THEY chat with... well, my stats for non-'Downers would look even worse.
Really, it's just... sad.

I guess the fact that I keep looking who is online and what they're doing is a pretty good sign

This happened last autumn.
It had been a very depressing situation in werewolf. I had left school and thus my chance to get online before the deadline and I went home. Needless to say, my thoughts were mostly around werewolf, speculating and forming theories. I went to toilet. I found myself washing my teeth though I was supposed to be washing my hands! I had been so deep in thought that I hadn't given a second thought to what I was doing.
Maybe dentists should start recommending werewolf totheir patients... ;)

I just realized I have posted on the top 12 threads of Mirth... and 28 of the first 40!!! It either means that good threads never die... or that I've spent far too much time posting in here !! =P
I'd hate to imagine what my statistics are. :p
You know you're addicted when you are really annoyed at missing the earlier train home because it means you can't get on The Downs as quickly as you would like.
