I want to reconfirm my claim on Tickle-Me-Ulmo.

TMU always remained a bit aloof and distant from the other Velou and their Valleyum resort, probably a result of the jokes they made about his red fur raiment and bulging eyes. Pensive but concerned about the inhabitants of Muddled-Mirth, he has often taken an active red-gloved hand in the affairs of men and elves, and has been known through the ages for his booming yet high-pitched laughter when his works come to fruition.

Forth the Questians!

Some of Manuël's character has already been set up in earlier posts about Môgol, so I will have to read over them again. I have yet to come up with a name and character assassination for Varda, but will try to apply some thought to it before it becomes necessary to write her.

I have been kept a bit busy this week, having started up a new writer's group (see signature) and am in that new parent mode where you have to monitor absolutely everthing (pant, pant) but I will try not to make this an excuse to be left behind. In fact, if Vogonwë and Pimpi are left behind, there'll be Nimrohell to pay. Like, totally.

Edit: It did just occur to me, though, that having Vogonwë mistakenly think Pimpi is ashore and jump off Amroth-like only to need to be rescued in his moment of misguided romantic heroism, might be good for a laugh..... :)

Confirmed, Thena.

Sounds like you'll come up with good ideas, Diamond.

I've heard from Lush, who intends to continue with us.

Sorry we're stuck in a rut, waiting for Squatter's post, folks; when I saw him in England less than two weeks ago, he promised to write it soon, but now I'm not getting any responses to my e-mails. I've decided that if he doesn't post this week, we will have to carry on without him, although he would be horribly missed!

I also have no idea if Orogarn 2 (BW)will be continuing...

Anyway, if wurst comes to wurst (as they say in the Mire), I will be open to suggestions for unique ways to leave characters behind! ;)

Diamond18
09-01-2004, 06:47 PM
Would this involve the killing of Earnur or Orogarn Two?

Estelyn Telcontar
09-02-2004, 02:44 AM
Well, we won't kill any characters without the permission of their owners, so it depends on the plans that they make. Theoretically, they will simply be left behind - I suppose they could make their own boat and follow somehow, or just roam M-M alone...

The Saucepan Man
09-03-2004, 06:22 AM
So what's been happening while I've been away? Well, I see that the Inert-ship are still in the Mire, and ... oh ... that's it ...

C'mon guys, I'm itching for the final confrontation, 'cos we know that the baddies always win. ;)

I shall post Mogul's departure for Valleyum within the next week, but don't let that hold things up.

By the way, any chance of one of the Velour resembling David Bowie circa 1973? It would make a bit more sense of Soregum's transformation for his song in the Marrow Bowns song competition. How about Howlie/Howdie? Perhaps he could be Zowie :D . By the way, have we final confirmation on his name, as I may need to change one of my past posts?

Estelyn Telcontar
09-03-2004, 06:34 AM
Saucy, welcome back! You have been sorely missed. Mith is away this week, but the best thing for you to do would be to check out the possibilities with him personally early next week. Since his last post got the GoWestShip moving out of the Mire, I will move us to the Havens within the next two - three days. I have still heard nothing from Squatter, so can only hope that he will catch up with us after that.

The Saucepan Man
09-03-2004, 10:09 AM
Thanks for the welcome back, Esty. :) It's good to be back, although work is very hectic at the moment so my Downs time is still limited. I was able to log-on while travelling, but I still have a lot of catching up to do. I haven't read a thread in the Books for about 3 weeks, and as for the Chapter-by-Chapter threads ...

Just realised that I'll need to make my post before the Gradually-Creeping-West-Ship reach the Pay Havens, so I've put up a save and I'll try to post something over the weekend. Alas, all that catching up will have to wait.

If I don't manage to post before you want to get things moving again, Esty, I'll delete the save.

PS For a beast of such ancient and imperial lineage, Chrysophylax sure seems to have been acting the confused, pimply adolescent in this adventure ... Sasser - priceless! :D

He's probably young for a dragon. He's probably also had a lack of nurturing influence in his life. I mean, he's pet to a dwarf for goodness sake. :D

The Saucepan Man

I mean, he's pet to a dwarf for goodness sake.Yes, and it would seem from his behaviour that female dragons are as rare as female dwarves. :D

I'm in the process of writing my post, slowed down by a real life (paid! and therefore urgent) work project that I should be able to finish today. I plan to take the -Ship directly to the Havens (You shall not pass GO, you shall not collect 30 silver pennies!). The only possibilities for a diversion between the Shire/Mire and the Havens that occur to me (*consults map) are the White Downs/Far Downs and the White Towers. (See 'The Grey Havens', RotK) Unless, (highly improbable, of course, but since when has that ever stopped us?!) we detour by way of Lake Evendim/Annúminas, but I've no idea for any adventure there. Should any of you have a cunning plan, please let me know posthaste; otherwise, I'll just get us there in record time.

edit: According to my handy-dandy Foster's Guide, "The Towers remained standing into the Fourth Age." Now, either we accept that (canon instead of cannons, for a change?! ) and avoid them, as our presence would most certainly be destructive in nature - or... we take that as a challenge! :D

YO.

Does anyone want to help me pick out my Velour character? I'm high on...stuff and low on imagination these days. I promise I'll love you forever if you do.

Estelyn Telcontar
09-05-2004, 06:28 AM
Well, the most obvious choice would be Nienna, since she's the one of the three female Valar among the most powerful who hasn't been taken yet. I have a few ideas on her which I will send you by PM. However, you may also freely choose among: [checks Valaquenta]

Vairë the Weaver (Námo's spouse)
Estë the Healer (Irmo's spouse)
Nessa (Tulkas' spouse) - dances, though whether or not with wolves is unknown...
Vána, the Ever-young (Oromë's spouse)

Unless, of course, you prefer to take the role of the ultimate female baddie - Ungoliant!!

The Saucepan Man
09-05-2004, 09:13 AM
Bagsie me Ungoliant. I have an idea ... ;)

Estelyn Telcontar

Is there a Cliff Notes version that I can use to catch up?

The Saucepan Man
09-05-2004, 05:50 PM
She's all yours, Saucy! How delightful! ;)

My post is done. I didn't get a chance to deal with Mogul's departure, but there is time yet for that ...

Estelyn Telcontar
09-06-2004, 08:10 AM
Cliff's Notes, BW?! Sacrilege! Here's your answer:

The Quest goes ever on and on,
down from the post where it began.
Now far ahead the Itship's gone
and you must follow if you can;
pursuing it with weary eyes
until you get some kind of clue,
and figure out where the plot lies.
And whither then? What will you do?

PS to all - Have we established a name for the Havens yet? I looked at Diamond's reference post, but there's none there.

Estelyn Telcontar
09-06-2004, 11:24 AM
OK, here's a suggested name and one which is still uncertain. I'd appreciate comments and ideas for additional names as well. I do have a couple of them established, but don't want to reveal too much in advance!

Mithlond = Mithtake
Grey Havens = ? (Striped Havens? Tartan Havens?)

The Saucepan Man
09-06-2004, 11:29 AM
I thought the Grey Havens were to be the Pay Havens. Hasn't this name already been used somewhere?

Estelyn Telcontar
09-06-2004, 11:32 AM
You're right, Saucy - thanks! I guess Mithtake could still be used as the 'Elven' name, couldn't it?!

Estelyn Telcontar
09-06-2004, 02:08 PM
I've put up a save for my post. It's actually already written, but I'm not quite satisfied with it yet, so I'll allow myself a night to sleep over it and get it up after revision tomorrow.

Saucy, thanks for your terrific post! It was fun to read, and I especially chuckled over your name for the Elven deity!

Lush

I'm so confused...I just realized that I completely missed Diamond's questions about Leninia's dad. Diamond, if you want Leninia's dad, you can have him. On a platter.

*going back to read now because I'm SO confused*

*and so high on meds*

(have been desperately ill)

Diamond18
09-06-2004, 11:58 PM
I rather suspected that Leninia's dad had been splattered over the inhabitants of the Mire....

Though if the mysterious Wizard in her lineage wasn't Sauerkraut, who does that leave? Pettygast? :p

I was just curious, actually. It's not very important, in the scheme of muddled up plotlines. ;)

I still haven't figured out a parody persona for Varda. *bursts into showy tears*

Estelyn Telcontar
09-07-2004, 02:39 AM
My post is up - I decided to divide it, giving the account of the ship's hiring later. That gives anyone who wishes to do so the opportunity to post an adventure or three in the Havens. Just don't name our ship or captain, please - I reserve that for myself!

Lush, Diamond, don't panic - I'm sure it will take us awhile to get to Valleyum, so you still have time to develop your characters. We have established them as kind of laid-back surfer dude types, although I imagine them to be like a bunch of bickering siblings as well. The BoLT should be excellent reference material for the latter! :D I also recommend a brief look at the Valaquenta for their individual characteristics and ideas on the relationships between them. You are free to add new aspects, of course.

The Saucepan Man
09-07-2004, 02:56 AM
Hehe. Naughty Merisu. It would appear that Kuruharan's influence is rubbing off on her. :D

Just to be pedantic, though, it's Valleyum.

There is some indication of the lifestyles and inclinations of the Velour in my first post ...

Estelyn Telcontar
09-07-2004, 03:58 AM
Oops, my bad! Thanks, Saucy - I've corrected that mithspelling... Wouldn't want to be associated with brand names of addictive substances!

Yes, thanks for the reminder - your epochal first post is excellent reference material!

Lush
09-07-2004, 06:45 AM
I'm pretty sure her dad is still alive, come to think of it (he was actually my own version of Radagast, but mostly a stab at aging hippies...God, those jokes never seem to go away for some reason).

So yeah.

Diamond18
09-12-2004, 12:27 AM
I took down my save, since I have been able to come up with precisely no ideas to further the idea set down therein. I think my brain has been slowly turning to wax this week, or at least, my comedic faculties are failing. In other words, not to hold up the game any....

Estelyn Telcontar
09-12-2004, 06:55 AM
OK, Diamond - perhaps you'll get inspired when other posts go up. Thena has promised that his save will be filled today, and if there are no further posts before then, mine for Merisu, procuring a ship, will be up within the next couple of days. After that, you all still have a bit of time (I should imagine a week or two) to post in the Havens before the Get-Up-and-Go-Ship gets up and goes.

Mithadan
09-12-2004, 08:39 PM
Grrralph must be heard before all set sail, though I can tack my post onto anyone elses as an add on.

09-13-2004, 09:22 AM
I am polishing my Sethamir post, but since Bethberry put up her save before mine, I wanted to wait until I saw those developments before posting myself, in case there might be another good hook on which to hang yet another plot complication. Please let me know if I should not wait for Bb. Thanks!

Bêthberry
09-13-2004, 09:37 AM
We wait for no man but a sword and a lord, Thena. Esty and I are in conference about this little delay, as it depends not upon me, however much that save appears to have been made by me. In short, that rotter, Squatter.

Thenamir
09-13-2004, 09:48 AM
We shall have to make things hotter for that rotter Squatter, lest the potted sot totter.

And Esty! How is it that Merisu-The-Unsulliable-and-Always-Perfectly-Coiffed managed to get covered with white dust? She to whom no mud can cling, whose style no rain can spoil, the Lady-who-never-needs-deodorant, whom the slightest dust mote would not deem to touch, she who bathes but once per year whether she needs it or not, is dirty??

Estelyn Telcontar
09-13-2004, 11:23 AM
Thena, please go ahead with your post. Bb can move her save to go after yours, since we are waiting for the go-ahead from Squatter so as to dispose of his character in a suitable manner. Yes, fellow writers, it appears that we will soon have to mourn Etceteron's leaving or demise. Squatter has moved and will have less opportunity to be online in the future, so he is leaving us, alas!

As to the mystery of the sullied Elven maiden - there must be something supernatural about that dust, that's all I can say...

Estelyn Telcontar
09-17-2004, 12:55 AM
Diamond has found a very valuable linguistic source for our adventures in Valleyum: ValSpeak (http://www.80s.com/Entertainment/ValleyURL/)! For those who, like me, are not native speakers of that particular dialect, it looks to be quite helpful! :D

A reminder to those with saves - please get them written and up this week. I have my post for Merisu ready to go, but am waiting another day to see if continuity will be a problem. After that, I will put it up, and those with saves must take care of continuity issues themselves.

Mithadan
09-17-2004, 06:16 AM
Please do not place the Itship on a ship until Grrralph has a chance to speak. I have not put up a save because I want to see what everyone else says before posting. If someone else's post hinges on boarding a ship, PM me and I will get a post or a save up, or simply advise what should or should not be said about Grrrralph.

Estelyn Telcontar
09-18-2004, 01:50 AM
Understood, Mith. My post for Merisu is up; she is now negotiating for ship's passage. The saves preceding my post should take place on the evening before that; otherwise, please move them to follow if you wish to post for the next morning, and remember that Merisu isn't at the inn.

The ship and captain are hereby duly introduced. I assume Cirkdan will have an Elven first officer (pointy ears, remember?! ), a healer (someone has to say "He's dead, Dim" :p ) who could conceivably be human, and an engineer - perhaps a Dwarf? I think this generation would not yet include orcs... ;)

PS - I must mention that my post was brought to you without harming a single save!!

Kuruharan

That’ll teach me to be eating my noontime breakfast while reading the REB. The “moon was full” comment prompted much orange juice to be sprayed upon the monitor. The reply of the Oathbreakers caused much cereal to follow.

Don’t be too surprised if we accidentally pick up an unexpected stowaway. The comedic possibilities of forlorn hopes, death-or-glory charges, last stands, continual argument about the Somethingship in the sinking ship sailing in the wrong direction to reach the end of the world, unrelenting castigations of the cowardice of most everyone else around, and a final climatic duel for the honor of Merisuwyniel between a reformed orc and a mouse are just too good to pass up.:D

Thenamir

Many thanks for not harming my save, Esty. I'll be glad to pick up your dry-cleaning bill for the milk and cereal, Kuru.

And so is posted my longest post yet, none the worse for the wear of the delay. I kept re-writing it, and it still didn't meet my own standards, but hopefully it will bring a less-messy chuckle or two to the remainder of the group.

Estelyn Telcontar
09-19-2004, 06:52 AM
Hmmm, Kuru, does that annoying Elven maiden have yet another pining admirer?! :D

Well done, Thena! You wrote an enjoyable post! Aside from the funny song parodies, I was very amused over the comparitive description of the dust-covered Gangship! Introducing Sethamir in person was a great idea, and you managed to come up with a book passage that hadn't been parodied yet - 'Queen of the Dead' indeed! And then the 'Hair of Isuldir'! Did O2 inherit Greatgreatgranddaddy's toupee?

Now, who'll be next to post?

The Barrow-Wight
09-20-2004, 05:14 AM
Unfortunately, it won't be OT2. Work just dumped a pile of reports on me that will preclude all RPG efforts. You might as well leave the poor fellow behind.

Estelyn Telcontar
09-20-2004, 06:13 AM
Oh dear, BW, what a bummer! If we must lose your participation and O2 as a member of the What'sUpDocShip, how would you like to have us 'dispose' of him - dead or alive?

You know, it kind of seems a shame to leave anyone behind in the Pay Havens. But, given the noble, courageous and (of course) downright silly deeds done by Earnur and Orogarn Two in the service of the Quest of the Entish Bow, anything other than a heroic (albeit comedic) end for them in a glorious final confrontation seems somewhat inappropriate to me.

Since it's worked very well so far with other posters including the endeavours of these characters within their posts (witness the prominent role of Orogarn Two in Thena's brilliant latest post), I don't see any reason why they shouldn't stay with the Doomed-Ship ( ;) ) until the bitter (or, more likely, not-so-bitter) end on that continuing basis.

Of course, it means that people will have to take on the role of two or more Velour each (or cut down the number of Velour involved), but I'm sure that would be manageable. (Although I was immensely looking forward to the appearance of Tulk Hogan :( :D .)

What does everyone else think?

Thenamir
09-20-2004, 10:38 AM
I have to agree. After over two years of sticking with the REB crowd, to lose any of the principals at this late hour would be highly disappointing.

Having said that, knowing how difficult it is for me to make time to do my own Gateskeeper posts, I can hardly volunteer for it myself, my latest post notwithstanding. It was just an idea I had to finally personify Sethamir, and with the Paths-of-the-Dead storyline, Orogarn Two (2!) seemed to take the forefront more so than Gateskeeper.

Speaking of Gateskeeper, there was a long period where I could not post, and still Gateskeeper managed at least a passing mention in the rest of the posts from others, keeping the character alive until I could return, for which I am grateful. I think the same could and should be done for OT2.

SpM, if you wish to carry Lord Etceteron, I will happily relinquish my post and the plans I've made for his, um, er, manly withdrawal from the Somewhat Leaky Ship. Oh heck, I will do so if anyone here wants him. Leninia? oh,Leninia?

In fact, Iwill assume that you've got 'im now and delete that save.

SpM, if you wish to carry Lord Etceteron, I will happily relinquish my post and the plans I've made for his, um, er, manly withdrawal from the Somewhat Leaky Ship.Er ... like Thena, I find it hard to make time to do my own posts (and I do have two characters already - well more if you count Greedhog, assorted Orcs and villains and yet more planned), and I am most certainly no Squatter, so humbly I must decline.

But I don't think that anyone has to specifically "take over" O2 and Earnur.

Speaking of Gateskeeper, there was a long period where I could not post, and still Gateskeeper managed at least a passing mention in the rest of the posts from others, keeping the character alive until I could return, for which I am grateful. I think the same could and should be done for OT2.That's exactly what I meant. They can be "kept alive" in other people's posts ... and, who knows, perhaps BW and Squatter might be enticed out of "retirement" to participate in the long-awaited (and probably a lot longer yet-awaited) final confrontation. ;)

Estelyn Telcontar
09-20-2004, 01:59 PM
I've thought about your suggestions and made following decision: No one can write for another character, true - the styles are much too individual. We could take all of them along for the ride, but is it necessary? Some of the characters are essential to further developments, but not all are. Squatter will have limited internet access for the next year, and I do trust that we shall finish this story within that time. That means he won't be back to take over Etceteron anymore - as a matter of fact, I'm not even getting e-mail responses from him now.

Bêthberry came up with a good plot twist which concerns her cameo character in Part 1 and gives Earnur an appropriate ending. I'd like to have her go ahead with that. Since there was a plan for O2's further involvement, we can keep him going along; Thena's post made good use of him, so I agree that it's a good idea not to lose him as well.

I do hope there will be further posts by the rest of you - things are going along with the speed of molasses in the winter! :(

Diamond18
09-20-2004, 05:56 PM
Well, Vogy is most definitely going to write a eulogy for Earnur. He was after all the only living admirer of his poetry for a while there, in his less sober moments.

Fantastic posts, both of them, Mith and Saucy!! They were (and still are) so much fun to read! In the first scene, Grrralph definitely reminds me of Puddleglum - will he feel like a "Respectowiggle" when he awakes? I chuckled over the full name you made of Cirkdan's nick - even using the right middle initial! :D And the Doc with the appropriate name and all of the good running jokes! For some reason, Grrralph's source of courage reminds me of the member of the "A-Team" who needed similar "help" to overcome his fear of flying... Very funny - thanks, Mith!

Saucy, your epic account is wonderful - great descriptions, amusing movie references, clever dialogues - all that, and Aerophaunts too!! Shades of Dumbo... Somehow I got the impression that the Aircorps commander was already practicing the right way to talk in Valleyum. And I can't help wondering what legal loophole there could possibly be to provide for a suitable end for Greedhog?! (I nominated your post for 'Best Post of the Week' on Bêthberry's thread (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?p=353306#post353306). )

Great stuff, guys - I look forward to the next posts!

He's dead Dim :D

The inter-weaving of a parody of one genre into another is a skilled art, and Mith has mastered it brilliantly here. The meter of Captain Cirkdan's sentences conjures up his voice perfectly. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the crew. It's the ones in the red outfits that need to watch out when they make landfall in Valleyum ... ;)

Many thank for your nomination, Esty. It makes me feel a bit better for the bleary-eyed state I found myself in the next morning, having stayed up to some ridiculously late (early) hour finalising the post.

Somehow I got the impression that the Aircorps commander was already practicing the right way to talk in Valleyum. To visualise Cap'n Ar-Kidd, think Noel Gallagher from Oasis dressed up like Timothy Mouse from Dumbo. Shine on, man ...

And I can't help wondering what legal loophole there could possibly be to provide for a suitable end for Greedhog?! It doesn't mention wraiths ...

While we are waiting for Bêthberry's post, we can plan ahead; the only thing it will change is Earnur's presence with the ShapeShip. If no one has any further business or adventure in the Havens, let's get them boarding the ship, or at least packing. Does anyone volunteer for the next post, or will I have to assign volunteers?! ;)

So far, only two members of the ship's crew are named - whoever posts next can name others, or if you have a good idea, please post it here.

What a hilarious post, Kuru! You took up the duster with a vengeance! I enjoyed reading every line of it and decided to continue the theme of last preparations for the journey with my post for Merisu. Now I'd like to ask as many of you as possible to add to that storyline. Lush, I need at least a short Leninia post to show that you're still with us. Orogarn Two is staying on as a NPC (non-player character, for those who are unfamiliar with RPG jargon), so anyone who wants to write him writing a letter to his father to go with that package is welcome to do so.

Apologies to the Middle Earth - Unstuck in Time (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=11229) thread's authors, but the idea of Denethor incongruously carrying an umbrella was too good to pass up!

Oh, and there's an additional ending in the works for my post - I'll edit later to include it...

It is done. And if it was good enough for Dickens, it must be good enough for Etceteron. I hope Squatter somewhere in cyberspace gets a good laugh.

With all due respect to the Game Founder, I have left my post where it was and simply filled in my save. The post works best coming before Kuruharan's tangent (and even MeriSue's shopping bout) and I wanted it close to Mithadan's.

I assume that Mithadan's post here concerned his magic wand, which he can wave to add Diamond's post of Vogonwe's lament to the end of mine.

Once again, I retire to the sidelines.

Thanks once again to our favorite and most faithful cameo writer for a great post! Bb, that was very amusing! The Star Trek references cracked me up, and the song references were fun too. All this, and mathoms too! You gave Etceteron a fitting farewell; I'm sure Squatter will be pleased when he reads it someday. (*Esty walks away, still chuckling over the 'SmellyOnion'... )

Is there a plan for the post where the Itship actually boards the ship? My own plans for posting have something to do with the early departure from the harbor, and I thought it might be easier to write a post in which I cover last minute preparations of the grusome twosome, words for Earnur (though he still yet lives, should a thing like that stop Vogy???), and boarding the ship (with ensuing good time being had by all) all in one fell swoop?

*pant, wheeze*

Basically I do not have enough ideas to make individual, well rounded posts for each event. If you have plans already for just how the boarding should go or who should write it, I will wait till the Boardingship has boarded the ship to display my paltry wit... such as it is.... :p

Estelyn Telcontar
10-10-2004, 06:13 AM
Diamond, since it looks like no one else is rushing to post, go ahead and write the boarding of the ship into your post - that's fine with me! You and Lush are the only remaining members of our writing team who haven't posted on the last page of the RPG - i.e. within the past two months. Lush announced her intent to carry on, so you can include her if you wish, but if she doesn't post very soon, we may have to write her out of the story - I don't know if she's still keeping up with us. The list of our writers grows thin...

Wonderful posts, Mith and Diamond! Mith, you managed to post though your character is sleeping - that definitely is worth extra points! It's always fun to read your hints of what's happening to Grrralph; makes me look forward to more... Diamond, your opening paragraph is great fun! Vogy writes haikus?! "Isn't it delicious!" "Most astonishing wonderful!" (comment for two voices, both supplied by me) You did a good job getting everyone on board; now, the floor is open for the other writers to post.

There is no definite time plan for the ship's journey; the name of the ship should give some good parody ideas. I know there has been some interest in using favorite Star Trek episodes; the way posts are moving with snail-in-molasses speed, there will be no reservations. First come, first served!

Oh, and just wondering, Mith - will Grrralph be waking up any time soon? :p

So, have we actually cast off?

Does our gilded vessel have a name?

Estelyn Telcontar
10-19-2004, 10:55 PM
Yes, we have embarked; the ship's name (established in RPG post #211 and repeated in #212) is "Ent's Surprise", sailing under the capable leadership of Captain Dimwi T. ("Dim") Cirkdan. The ship's healer is a parrot named Dr. Macaw. Other crew names have not yet been established, so anyone continuing may add to the roster. They can be multi-racial, of course, but the first mate must be an Elf, as the parrot tends to point out the shape of his ears. (Pun intended, though not of Rimbaudian quality...)

Some planning for this part of the journey:

Time - depends on the frequency of posting. (That means, at our present rate we should reach Valleyum sometime next June! ;) ) I'd like to allow enough time to develop the many possibilities of this ship trip.

Number of posts - I'm thinking that each writer should post once at the very least, but if we take advantage of the many ideas possible, it can be more. When we have the feeling that it's no longer interesting, the 'Ent's Surprise'-Ship will reach Valleyum.

Ideas for posts - Here are a few to get us started:
Middle-earth variations:
Ossë and Uinen have a marital spat, whipping up a storm that endangers the ship and its passengers.
Pirates (Corsairs?) attack the ship

Star Trek variations:
The ship lands on the island of the week. Cirkdan is later found pulling on his boots after a "cultural exchange" with the native leader, who, though of a different race, happens to be a "fully compatible" female.
Another island of the week - its primitive people are controlled by one of Melkor's evil machines. Cirkdan talks it into self-destruction.
Adorable, cuddly creatures (perhaps some kind of Zerl?) infest the ship.

Other sources:
Lewis' 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'
'Titanic'
many more - even 'Gilligan's Island', if you can pull it off...

These ideas are up for grabs, free to all, first come, first served.

Kuru has mentioned having the talking Narnia mouse as a stowaway, so unless someone asks him for permission, that's his.

Request: I'd like to avoid saves for this part of the story. After all, the posts can be very episodic; true to the nature of TV series, nothing is different at the end of the episode. Use a save only in exceptions, perhaps when you are almost finished with a post into which you have invested a lot of effort, so that someone else does not beat you to it. In the exceptional case that a save is up, the others may post as if nothing changes, so please do not wait. I'd like to have the story moving along again!

Kuruharan
10-20-2004, 08:40 AM
We may want to avoid Zerls. They are going to turn out to be in cahoots with somebody very, very bad (I'm not thinking of Mogul, but rather a character unrevealed as yet, although the Zerls could be in cahoots with Mogul too for all I know.) Then again, that could be all the more reason for including them. :p

What a wonderful post, Kuru! Sorry I haven't commented on it here earlier, but these last few days have been rather busy in real life. I really enjoyed reading it, both the first time and following times. You established the character of Reaperneep as being on board, so the next posts should include him. The elven first officer is now named, Mister Neemoi, as is the engineer, Tottie (anyone is welcome to make a real name of that).

Is anyone planning to post soon? If so, please PM me; I am working on an idea, since no one else seems to be doing so at the moment, and it would be a shame to have unnecessary duplicates.

I posted one episode of the adventures of the Seaship 'Ent's Surprise', finishing it off in best series tradition - nothing has changed at the end, except that the ship is now sailing westwards after landing on the island. Since my post was quite long enough already, I was not able to develop the alternate universe more. Should any of you want to do something with those possibilities, I can edit to remove the ending. If not, you are welcome to write any episode that takes your fancy. I'm hoping for some new posts this week!

Saucy, what a fantastic post! Combining the Watcher and the Ents is an idea truly worthy of the creative process that is parody! I find myself reading your contribution and wanting to summarize it like a CbC discussion: "We have two poems in this chapter, one looking ahead to the country that is the Itship's goal, the other recounting a tale of the past that is gone forever, or at least until one of us decides to revive the Kraken-wives." And of course the honoured Star Trek philosophy of saving alien lives, as long as their interests do not conflict with ours...

Thanks for putting in those late hours - I hope the next writers are encouraged to follow suit!

Welcome back indeed, Rim! It's great to have you questing with us again; we hope Halfemption (great name!) will have the time to continue on - perhaps all the way to Valleyum. There are too many ideas in your post to mention all of them, even providing I caught them all, but a few of my favorites are: the aged mariner; warp factor; "Prawn Spreader" - sounds like a sandwich!; Bawlin and Snorin; and the nature of 'dead silence'. Oh, and his ditty about the names!

It will be interesting to see how this new but feeling-like-old character will fit in with the rest of the Shipshape-Ship! I can't help but wonder what story is behind the fact that he already seems to know Kuru's name, even taking the liberty to use the short version...

Ai! Ai! A Rimbaud!

Great posts Saucepan and Rimbaud!

Rimbaud
11-11-2004, 10:19 AM
Thanks chap/esses; Esty, I think there's a line in my post where the Itship introduce themselves. Typical lassez faire writing, eh? The name ditty is a riff on a Paul Simon song, I just can't resist sometimes.

So - Halfemption:

In keeping with the thoroughly inaccurate naming thus far, whereas Halfullion was assuredly half-empty, Halfemption is rather the other way. Although less good looking than his more esteemed and enobled sibling, he is the brighter of the two, and the more sensitive. A gentle play on Faramir and Boromir coming up soon...

The young Halfemption was kicked out of home by his father, Old Gumption, for not being 'heroic' enough, and for commenting wrily that the family should spend less time adjusting their hair, and more time preparing for the quests that invariably lessened their number. Old Gumption took this as a severe insult upon the Gilded Scissor, and banished his son until such time as he could prove his valour.

Unfortunately, shortly after he set out in his ship, Halfemption became stranded on an island, where he turned into a dragon and it took a rather uncomfortable episode with a lion to straighten him out. He has picked up a companion, the estimable Fetherfled - of whom, more later.

Halfemption is, however, in the common parlance - a good egg, whereas Halfullion had always been a little cracked. Something to do with throwing off the yolk etc etc.

Estelyn Telcontar

What a fantabulous post, Kuru! You had me laughing over so many things - coughcoughprotrusionunderthebedcovercoughcough - what a shock for Merisu to be Kuru after her usual knockout appearance! The body switches are definitely a novel plot element that no one has thought to use until now, and your combination names are hilarious. Thanks for a highly amusing post!

Question: Are you planning to continue that story to bring it to an end, or would you like someone else to keep going?

Kuruharan

As a public service announcement, here is the complete list of the switches so the next person to post does not have to go through and pick them all out.

Merisuwyniel is Kuruharan=Kuru-suwyniel
Orogarn Two is Soregum=Orogum Two
Pimpi is Gateskeeper=Pimpi-keeper
Soregum is Reaperneep=Sore-neep
Neemoi is Leninia=Neeninia
Macaw is Pimpi=MacPimpi
Cirkdan is Orogarn Two=Cirk-garn Two
Vogonwë is Cirkdan=Cirk-onwë
Leninia is Halfemption=Half-Leninia
Gateskeeper is Grralph=Grrrateskeeper
Grralph is Neemoi=Grr-moi
Halfemption is Vogonwë=Vog-emption
Kuruharan is Macaw=Kuru-caw
Reaperneep is Merisuwyniel=?

I believe that is everyone.

Further variations on the names are highly encouraged because it makes it harder to tell who is who.

Thanks for a wonderful post, Rim! You managed to get the Mixed-Nuts-Ship out of their predicament, though with a bit of the usual mayhem and destruction at the end. (The next poster should be able to find some means of getting them back to their ship, I'm sure.) There are some great laughs in your post, which I shall not count up for various reasons, one of which is the notion of family-friendly posting... I must admit, though, you do have me curious about the "scene that can only be described by someone with the willpower to do it". Oh, and how ingenious to come up with the idea of a ring that changes everyone's personalities!! :p

At any rate, I am very glad that you jumped into the breach (or was it onto the beach?) to post. Now who'll be next? Thena, who has been working on a post, appears to have fallen prey to real life and hasn't been around lately. Mith, Diamond, and Lush would be the next obvious choices, since it's been about six weeks since their last posts. Game, any of you?

And even if the ship is meant, "lost" does not mean "gone forever", right?!

Rimbaud
12-01-2004, 02:14 PM
Sorry. I meant no vessel is in sight. No dinghy, nor ship anchored further out. This is open to any interpretation. Fog, piracy or simply being on a different beach are all available. I certainly don't think the ship is lost completely, or rather, that certainly wasn't what I meant.

While I'm waiting for some responses as to next posts, I'd like to clarify the important issue of timing: Should I have the Itship reach Valleyum before Christmas, or should we wait and tackle that plotline afterwards? The Saucepan Man

Any similarity between Ear-Hand-Ill the Mariner and Earandnau the Marinade is entirely coincidental.

Great post, Mith! Nice to see a few of the legends only hinted at 'til now being fleshed out. We're getting quite a little Legendarium (Parodarium?) going here now. ;)

I've put up a quick post, which is primarily plot ( ) development. Extra parody points to anyone who uncovers the significance (such as it is) of the Laurinandon Bridge.

Oh, and sorry to anyone who has never seen the UK soap Eastenders, as you won't get the ending ...

Oh I do, with a shiver of dread. :)

Most excellent posts gentlefolk! Loved the developing backstory in Mith's and the developing forestory in SpM's; nothing will escape our fearsome satirical grasp... I'm still waiting for a good spoof on Trotter the Ranger Hobbit, though. ;)

Rep forthcoming, but apparently, like butter on bread, I need to spread it around a bit more.

Esty's Law: Whenever I get the feeling that this RPG is near-dead, and firmly resolve never ever to begin Part 3, posts start rolling in, in a quantity and quality that makes me want to go on forever.

A wonderful post, Saucy! You managed to advance the plot and still insert so many laughs that it was a treat to read! And that at an hour which I would not choose for creative writing - thanks for your great contribution! (sërf-fletting, via VIA, Toll Entrihëa - fun!)

...and no, unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to see "Eastenders", so your last reference will remain vaguely humorous for me, but not chiming a chord, alas!

You were planning a part three?

Since I think we are going to destroy Muddled Mirth (one way or the other) was this going to be in...

Space, the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Entish Surprise...

(Yes, I know that was lame  )

EDIT: Speaking of lame jokes, before we arrive at Valleyum, I'd like to post one more time. I have a flinchingly, wincingly, nauseatingly bad joke I'd like to get in (stolen from several different media formats no less). So, were we ready to get there, or were we waiting for some of our stragglers to catch up with us?

Estelyn Telcontar
12-06-2004, 07:37 AM
Completely destroying Muddled-Mirth?! That's a pretty high goal, even for the specialized experts of the Destruction-Company-Ship! I hadn't dared to hope for such a lofty climax. My thoughts were, when the Ent-That-Was-Broken is reunited, he needs some company - you know, "It is not good that Ent should be alone." So I'd toyed with the idea of Part the Third, The Return of the Entwife, wherein he finds out that she was only gone on a long shopping spree, buying some of those lovely hats with fruit decoration, and finally comes back again. However, if Muddled-Mirth is destroyed... :p

No problem, you are welcome to post again before we reach the shores of Valleyum, Kuru - Thena will be posting soon, he said, and since we will not proceed with the plot until after Christmas, I'd planned to have the ship arrive in the West the first week of January or so.

I forgot to publicly mention Saucy's wonderful post - thanks for your excellent writing, and a record time for following up!

I have posted yet again; sorry about that, but I asked the game founder and she didn't mind, since the game has been moving so slowly anyway. I simply had to use the ideas to which Saucy's earlier post inspired me...

Now anyone is welcome to post. You may want to take the MixedNutsShip through customs (via VIA, of course), meet and greet inhabitants of this fair country, visit the city of Valleyfornia, or just wreak the usual havoc amongst them. Do not pass "go", do not collect... ahem, do not do anything that would interfere with their later meeting with the Velour and Mogûl, since Saucy has plans there. Mith, please inform me concerning your next plot developments, at least as far as they must be planned.

Should anyone have a post that would precede the latest ones, it could be inserted into a previous post by one of the admins. Please use bolding with the name of the member [ Kuruharan's post ] to tack it onto the end of someone else's, so that it can be recognized.

Diamond18

Are there some plans for how to introduce the Velour (beyond Yawanna)? I don't mean to the Itship, I mean in the game itself. As in, would a post with Manuël and Prada (Varda of course) interfer with what Mogul is doing? I don't know what would be the best time to bring them into the thread.

Estelyn Telcontar
01-12-2005, 07:03 AM
"Prada" - great name! Sounds like a very fashion-conscious Vala - oops, Velou.

Plotwise, there will be an official 'hearing' of the Itship before the assembled Velour; however, you are welcome to write a post for them that introduces them as characters, gives an idea of their position in Valleyum, etc. All writers may do that with their Velour characters, but posts with the Itship characters discovering a strange new world are welcome as well.

Here is the Velour character list, by way of reminder:

Melvin/Môgul - Saucy
Yawanna - Esty
Haulie - Mith
Prada and Manuël - Diamond
Mantoes - (was to be Squatter, now NPC or up for grabs)
Tulk Hogan - (was to be BW, ditto above)
Tickle-Me-Ulmo - Thena
Hornme the Foxhunter - Kuru
? - Lush (?)

Additionally, we have more Velour that can be used as NPCs (non-player characters); perhaps we should come up with parody names for them so that they can be used by all.

Tolkien calls'em:

Irmo
Estë
Nienna
Nessa
Oromë
Vána
Vairë

Open for suggestions...

The Saucepan Man

Good to see you back, Diamond.

As in, would a post with Manuël and Prada (Varda of course) interfer with what Mogul is doing? Not at all, provided that they don't encounter Môgul, destroy his army, reunify the rent Ent etc. I should also clarify that Yawanna will not be with the other Velour, as she is currently in the process of eloping with the Dread Developer. :D

Prada is a great name, Diamond. It goes rather well with Vogonwe's earlier invocation of her: Ellevoguereth Cosmopolitaniel!

Surely Estë should be Esty (and vice versa). ;)

And Ungoliant is mine ... MUAHAHAHA!

Rimbaud

Wanna, as in "I wanna", and Nessie, as in Loch, seem suitably Velourous.

Estelyn Telcontar
01-12-2005, 12:01 PM
I'm enjoying the various name suggestions! Here are the ones that occurred to me in the meantime:

Estë-Lynn (no need to guess for the inspiration there...)
Vairsacë (in keeping with Diamond's fashion theme)
Chanessa (ditto)
Nír-Vana (Valleyum New - um, Third - Agey)

Keep those cards and letters coming, folks! Nothing is definite yet.

What a clever post, Kuru! You managed to combine both your original character(s) and the new one, whilst throwing in a MP reference just for fun. You kept the 'Ent's Surprise' triumvirate with the Itship - what does everyone think? Shall we carry them on as NPCs or shall we conveniently lose them along the way?

As a personal favor, can I ask that we lose them? I've never watched Star Trek so pretty much everything about them has completely lost me, and I wouldn't know how to go about writing them. Of course, if I just limit my posts to not use them, it doesn't matter, but I just thought I should say that I've been kind of following things and waiting for them to get lost. :p

I agree. I'm not really much of a Trekkie myself. I have enjoyed their involvement so far, but I think that they've had their day (voyage?). And if Macaw says "Blast it Dim ..." one more time ... ;)

I'm glad you didn't give up on that post, Thena! It would have been a shame to miss out on it. Thanks for your perseverance. I very much enjoyed it, especially as "Tribbles" is my favorite ST episode. You added 'Schuphilboerd', showing that the members of the Itship can be creative, not just destructive. I like the name of the island, the cute reference to Cirkdan's dalliance, and the 'chinchilla trumpet'. :D (It plays in the same orchestra as the ermine violin, obviously...) And Merisu has aquired a hitherto unknown sister?!

Thenamir

"Can you summon Sasser back?" she asked. Gateskeeper took the Cell-antir and fiddled with it for a moment. Then he shook his head. "I have never seen such a thing before," he said. "It is beyond my power to call back the wyrm."

"If not you, then who?" asked Kuruharan, who was busily dodging the hot tears which were falling around him. A whistle sounded from the Cell-antir. Grrralph took the device and looked into it again. Mystic runes were superimposed over Sasser's sorrowful face. They read, "THE VELOUR, YOU IDIOTS!"

Just a reminder that there are some other subplots that need attention wne/if we ever get the audience with the Velour...

Some of you might remember my cameo character in the first REB, Bilbo S. Thompson. He was of course shamelessly lifted from the persona of the creator of gonzo journalism, Hunter S. Thompson. I was not the first to lift his persona for creative inspiration; the "Uncle Duke" character in the Doonesbury cartoon also was based on Thompson.

Hunter S. Thompson died Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Given the somewhat Byronic nature of his life, the manner of his death perhaps is not surprising. RIP

At the moment, this RPG reminds me of nothing more than a game to see who blinks first. Just how long can any writer get by with not posting so someone else posts first? I know there is planning and plotting going on in the background, but does that mean that no one is going to post now? If you are waiting for a development and cannot take the Itship there yourself, please let me know so that I can post to move the plot, at least.

Sneaky Mith has begun filling in his save without saying a word! So far, so great, Grey One - I look forward to more!

Now for some serious planning: It's been over two years since we began the adventures of the Entish Bow, Merisu et al. We finished the first part, the 'Revenge' (5 pages), within a little over three months! Now we've been at the second part (6 pages so far) for over 1 1/2 years - double ! I'd like to get the story wrapped before this summer; as I will be away for much of June, that means we'd finish by the end of May. Please get your behind-the-scenes plotting coordinated now, let me know if there's any development or set-up that you need to have for your next post, and then let's get moving! As soon as Mith's post is completed I will write one to do just that.

April - The Big Battle, etc.
May - The Reunification and wrap-up

Haulië as the Velour's handyman is hilarious, and Manuël's final word of power cracked me up! :D

...looking forward to seeing what peaceful, sensible non-action Kuru cooks up...

Next potential candidates for a post would be: Lush, Thena, Diamond, in no particular order.

Lush

So, I'm going on spring break to 'Bama and New Orleans in a few minutes (or, at least, I should be, but I think the majority of my road-trip buddies are currently passed out). I won't be back until next Saturday and won't have Internet access until then. Or so I think. Anyway, I'd love to post next Sunday. Kissy Kissy. And good job to our biggest stars (i.e. everyone). :)

Let me see...

The obligatory Monty Python reference,
C.S. Lewis,
The Simpsons,
Cyberspace degeneracy of various sorts,
a few issues actually relevant to Tolkien (believe it or not),
18th Century literature,
and classic American radio.

(I will be uber-impressed if anybody gets the classic American radio reference that I artlessly dropped in for no apparent reason.)

*raises hand*

Okay, is this a big battle or a minor skirmish? I'm completely lost on what's going on at the moment, but if I can get it sorted out I may have a post to write.

Take your pick.

I'm sure that even if we destroy Mogul's entire army, he'll have another one to trot out as soon as he needs it.

Since I believe the future of the plot and many hours of planning require that Mogul continues to command a significant force, I: (1) hope you guys don't kill everyone; and (2) guarantee that if you do kill everyone in sight, it will turn out to only be the vanguard.

Kuru, that is a fantastic post - you had me laughing out loud when I read it this morning! I love the eucatastrophe discussion, the Black Speech and the "all your base" references - among other things...

I look forward to seeing what turns the story will take!

Kuru, I'm impressed with the reference to the UK ban on hunting.

Great post! :D

But I must echo Mith's sentiments and request: first that you don't wipe out the entire force (or I will just have to bring another into play :p ) or any significant characters, secondly that it becomes clear that Hornme and the dubiously acquired guns are not sufficient alone to vanquish Mogul's entire force and thirdly that you do not recapture Gravlox.

Not just yet, anyway. An encounter with Mogul himself is on the cards, so if anyone wants to take us to a suitable point for that to occur, then that would be great. Just leave his entrance to me ...

Not to spoil a potential future joke, but everyone should remember that we are not that far away from the orcs "respawn" point (to borrow the gamer term for it) should worst come to worst.

Thanks, Diamond! Chaos and anachronism, blood and gore - what more could an Entish Bow post have to offer?! I sure hope Merisu was out of the way, or it will take her forever to wash and dry her hair, her blouse, her skirt... Rim's next, or anyone who cares to post this week - saves can be moved if necessary.

I will post next week and the climactic battle events start with the beginning of April. Should anyone have developments that need to take place before then, please prepare them with a post during March or let me know so that I can set them up in my post next week. Those who have done extensive battle and related sub-plotting, prepare for action soon!

Good - and fast! - job, Rim! Star Wars battles and puns, even on the discussion thread - oh my!

Saucy, as far as I'm concerned, unless someone lets you know PDQ that they wish to post ASAP, go ahead and introduce Mogûl. By all means let's get on with the plot, such as it is! :D

Sorry for the delay folks. We were away for Easter (on the Isle of Wight :D ).

I am working on a post and should have it up in the next day or so.

Mogûl and the Itship are soon to be introduced. He will of course be looking to make some deals. I thought a short post from each member of the company (or those still with us, at least) in which they are offered their heart's (or, in some cases, bank balance's) desire might be quite fun. Would anyone be up for that?

Estelyn Telcontar
03-29-2005, 01:20 AM
Well, if that holiday location doesn't inspire you, Saucy, I don't know what could! The offers by Mogûl sound like a very good idea to get everyone involved briefly again. IIRC, Lush should be back from spring break now, so the only one I'm not sure is still with us is Thena. Roll call - who's here this week?

Apologies for the length, but someone round here has to help Esty keep the plot on course. :p ;)

There is no way any post of yours could be too long, Saucy!! This one is fantastic, so hilarious that I can only begin to mention my favorite laughs*; it advances the plot and wonderfully sets the scene for the next posts. You wrote very appropriately for all of the Itship characters; it should be easy for each of us to pick up the threads from there. I will begin with a post for Merisu.

*the description of the results of Reaperneep's rapier; "smaller and less cohesive" Aerophaunts; Kuru's “That only counts as one!”; the non-Deus-Ex-Machina appearance of the Eagles; Gatesy's movie-Gandalf explanation of death :D ; the great song parody; the effect Môgul's appearance had on each Itship member...

Mission fulfilled - my save is filled in. Anyone can go next; I only request that saves in this current situation do not stay open for longer than a day, so that posting can move along quickly.

Great posts Saucepan and Esty! But foregive me if I have little sympathy for Mogul.

Saucepan, I will be sending you a PM shortly regarding a matter of mutual interest.

The Saucepan Man
03-31-2005, 06:32 AM
I think you should all feel very sympathetic. It's not easy being the bad guy, you know. :( ;)

Wonderful post, Esty. Just the sort of thing that I had in mind (although I was, of course, expecting each member of the Itship to succumb to their various temptations. ;) ). I did have one thought though. Merisu's parting words might make it more suitable for the final vision in the sequence. What do you think?

Anyway, who's up next? It would be nice to have something, however brief, from each member of the Itship. Rim, Lush, Kuru and Diamond can take care of Hal, Leninia, Kuruharan, Chrysophylax, Pimpi and Vogonwe. And hopefully Thenamir can be enticed to post for Gatesy. Any takers for Orogarn and Reaperneep?

Soregum and Grrralph remain unaffected (unless Grrralph wants to have a dream ...).

PM received and replied to, Mith.

No problem, Saucy! I just wanted to be a good example [insert smiley with halo here] for everyone. I can move the post if it works better that way. I'll leave it up for now and see what happens.

I volunteer to post for Orogarn - I won't put up a save, but hope to write that within a day or so. Umm, do you want him to succumb or resist temptation?

It is, of course, possible for any or all to post for their Velour characters - what happened to them after the Itship left so abruptly??

Estelyn Telcontar
04-01-2005, 04:50 AM
I have posted Orogarn's temptation scene; Merisu's will be moved to the end of the sequence when all others have posted. Please make the outcome of your temptation scenes ambiguous, at least; better yet, have your character(s) succumb at first. Merisu's resistance will turn the tide at the end.

If anyone wishes to post for Reaperneep after doing so for your own characters, please let me know. Otherwise I will write for him later on.

PS - I added a PS to the letter, remembering the running gag that our honoured Wight used to put into each missive...

Thanks for continuing the story, Kuru! That's a great post, the perfect temptation for a Dwarf! Will you be writing one for Chrys as well?

OK, let's keep the story moving, folks - I look forward to more posts!

Devouring defaulting debtors while wallowing in unparalled riches is Chrysophylax's temptation.

In some way, he'll probably get what he wants no matter what happens. That's what happens when you focus on the simple things in life...like eating everything not nailed down. :D

That's a wonderfully funny post, Diamond, especially since the inner desires of each of the happy couple are so opposed to each other! Wait a minute - that's not satire, that's real life!!

The food lists were highly enjoyable reading - I could be tempted by something like that... [sigh]

No poor cousin this, Rim! Just a lovely turnaround of rivalling brothers' roles, and the wonderfully symbolic, archetypal use of an apple! Good job.

It's so nice to have you all posting, and encouraging to me to hope that we can indeed finish the story as I'd planned.
