Unfortunately he was exceptionally hungry and picked up the hare rather than the ring and forgot to tell anyone about it.

Unfortunately the hare slipped the ring on to it's paw and he disappeared which freaked Gwaihir out so much that he dropped it.

Unfortunately, hares scare the tusks off oliphaunts, so Gimli, who was standing right by the hare when it ran, fled in a mad fear in the direction of Minas Tirith, leaving destruction in his path.
