Galvorn was used to make which two swords?
Pallando B.C
02-26-2003, 01:56 AM
Eöl was renouned for using the meteoric iron Galvorn, and he made Anglachel and Anguirel
Lindolirian
02-26-2003, 03:38 PM
Of course.

Name the three mariners who accompanied Eärendil on his vogages.
Annunfuiniel

They were Falathar, Erellont and Aerandir according to my translated Silm.
Pallando B.C
02-27-2003, 04:55 AM
Yes!
Annunfuiniel
03-01-2003, 02:56 AM
Oh good! I had my doubts about the spelling 'cause for example the name of Lalaith was twisted as Lailath! smilies/rolleyes.gif
So, what is the connection between the Hunting of the Wolf and river Esgalduin?
Estanesse
03-01-2003, 01:59 PM
That is the place were the hunt for Carcharoth came to an end
Annunfuiniel
03-01-2003, 02:18 PM
Yes, you're right on that but I was looking for something in the line of cause and effect... Can you find it?
And btw. welcome to the Downs, Estanesse!

Estanesse
03-01-2003, 04:19 PM
I hope this is the correct answer
because Carcharoth the Wolf trunk drunk from the river Esgalduin his pain eased and the hunters (Thingol and company) became the hunted?
smilies/biggrin.gif
Annunfuiniel
03-01-2003, 04:32 PM
Ok, I give up on you. smilies/biggrin.gif
I was looking for that part where Huan and Carcharoth were fighting and the ground shook so that the rocks blocked the falls of Esgalduin.
But you were so close that you may continue. smilies/smile.gif

Who was Fingolfin's wife?
Pallando B.C
03-17-2003, 07:15 PM
The wife of Fingolfin was Anaire. She remained on Aman mainly due to her friendship with Earwen. All her sons went with her father.
This was my answer to the question you asked me on this thread back in Nov, 2002. You must be interested in Anaire. smilies/wink.gif

With the sudden urge to ressurect old threads sweaping across people on the Downs, we start to lose really good threads such as this one. Beren's confirmation is required on this one, which is odd, because Beren is very good at keeping commitments to threads, but I think we can forgive ol' Dry Bones for this one.
Ok, a question. What was Ondolindë the original name for?
Eruanna
04-05-2003, 05:18 PM
It was the original Quenya name for Gondolin.
Pallando B.C
04-06-2003, 04:18 AM
Yes!
Eruanna
04-06-2003, 01:02 PM

Galadriel was her chosen Sindarin name, but what two other names (proper names not nicknames) had "The Lady of the Golden Wood" also been called?

Azaghal
Bregolas
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
04-08-2003, 12:26 PM
Was Bregolas actually a king? *puzzled*
I should probably have said "two of the kings" not "the two kings" because there were more than two... Azaghal should certainly count.

Allrighty.
What year [circa, anyway] did Thingol forbid the Sindar to speak Quenya?
Estanesse
04-20-2003, 04:54 PM
It's Before the Dagor Aglareb(75 FA )
and after the Journey of Turgon and Finrod(50 FA)
So I guess that Thingol forbid the Sindar to speak Quenya circa 65 years First age
Beren87
04-21-2003, 11:23 PM
Good Job! Just when I thought I had made a difficult question too. Your turn.

Thank you.
How many Noldor High Kings were there in the first age and name them.
Lindolirian
04-23-2003, 08:52 AM
If you are including the Years of the Trees in the First Age, then there are five. Finwë, Fëanor, Fingolfin, Fingon, and Erenion Gil-Galad. If you you are refering to the First Age counted from the first rising of the Sun, then there are three. Fingolfin, Fingon, and Gil-Galad.
Estanesse
04-23-2003, 08:59 AM
I'm referring to the First Age counted from the first rising of the Sun,
but sorry your answer is not correct

Who decided who would be the first lord of Ladros and who was the first lord?
Lindolirian

Boromir was given Ladros by Fingolfin.
Estanesse
04-24-2003, 03:29 PM
Sorry that’s not the right answer smilies/frown.gif
Beren87
04-24-2003, 10:33 PM
My my Lind., just not your day is it.
Actually, that's strange. You would think it would be given by the same elf who gave Dor-Lomin to Hador Lorindol, which would be Figolfin. [Both gifts are given in the same paragraph in The Silm]. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Finarfin.
Whatever the answer is, I'd like to know where you go it.
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
04-24-2003, 11:16 PM
Ladros was given to Boromir by Finrod Felagund, I believe. smilies/wink.gif
Sophia
Estanesse
04-25-2003, 08:33 AM
It seems that I made a mistake. I thought that Fingon was the answer, Boromir was born after Dagor Bragollach ( 6 generation of men but Boromir is 4 the generation of men smilies/frown.gif ).
So I have looked a bit more accurate in the Sil and found this
From the northern slopes of Dorthonion Angrod and Aegnor, sons of Finarfin, looked out over the fields of Ard-galen, and were the vassals of their brother Finrod, lord of Nargothrond
To look out over the fields of Ard-galen you have to be in possession of Ladros.
I think Sophia the Thunder Mistress answer is the most likely one.
Lindolirian
04-25-2003, 03:27 PM
My my Lind., just not your day is it. No, Beren, it certainly isn't. I think I need to hit the books again. I always to these questions from memory, but I spose I'll be looking them up for a little while. O, my this is bad... smilies/frown.gif

What encounter, with tragic consequences, occurred at the Spyhill?
Lindolirian
04-29-2003, 08:41 PM
Glaurung put his spell upon Nienor, who fell into a darkness of forgetfulness, ran to Turin and soon married him, not knowing he was her brother. She persuaded him to not go to war, and that encouraged Glaurung to seek Turin out instead of having Turin come to him. This brought ruin upon Brethil including the deaths of Hunthor, Brandir, Dorlas, Turin, and Nienor.
The Saucepan Man
04-30-2003, 01:45 PM

Lindolirian

The Saucepan Man
05-06-2003, 07:32 PM
Well, it seemed to work with the dates. He was the latest of the ancestors of Elros who would have been around 87 years before the start of the Second Age.

I apologise for ignoring this topic, but as I'm off to France for 3 weeks in the morning and unlikely to get online within that time I forfeit my go smilies/smile.gif
See you all soon smilies/smile.gif
Sophia the Thunder Mistress

Since I have a question, I'll ask it smilies/tongue.gif.
Feanor's second son was considered second best at what and to whom?
Finwe
06-25-2003, 09:42 AM
Second best at singing/music and he was considered second best to Daeron, the Minstrel of Doriath.
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
06-25-2003, 09:04 PM
Perfection, Finwe.
Finwe
06-26-2003, 09:01 PM
Ah, excellent! Wonderful! It is comforting to know that I know my son's family.
He became second-best after a one who lost something later came in. He took the coward's path, yet became famed throughout history for what he was best at.
Telchar
06-28-2003, 06:53 PM
Maglor? Celebrimbor?
Finwe
06-30-2003, 09:37 AM
Nope.
Finwe
06-30-2003, 06:05 PM
All right, since no one seems to be getting this, I'll give you a hint.
HINT: He was one of the two most famous wanderers. (*coughcoughnottheistaricoughcough*)
Lindolirian
07-10-2003, 10:58 PM
Daeron.
Finwe
07-11-2003, 09:09 AM
Right, your go!

07-17-2003, 04:40 PM
What were Mandos and Lorien called collectively?
Luthien_ Tinuviel
07-17-2003, 07:36 PM
They are called the Feanturi: "Masters of Spirits".
Lindolirian
07-17-2003, 07:42 PM
Sure thing!
Luthien_ Tinuviel
07-18-2003, 10:44 AM
Yeah! Okay, who did the sons of Bor kill in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad?
Lindolirian

The sons of Ulfang. (Ulfast and Ulwarth)

What Elf hoped that "no man shall say that elven-words are lightly spoken"?
Gwaihir the Windlord
07-27-2003, 03:01 AM
Beleg, as he set out on his quest to find the whereabouts of Turin.
Lindolirian
07-27-2003, 04:31 PM
Right you are! Lead on, Gwaihir!
Gwaihir the Windlord
07-29-2003, 02:57 AM
Thanks.
What was the name of the sword that was given to Beleg?
Diamond Green
07-29-2003, 05:40 AM
Anglachel?
Legolas
02-10-2004, 02:45 PM
Well Gwaihir is nowhere to be found, but 'Anglachel' was certainly the right answer.
Who offered Turin their knife as a gift at their parting? (Turin declined.)
Lindolirian

A hypothetical question:
If Avranc were in an archery contest what would his hit percentage most likely be?
Lindolirian
02-13-2004, 02:51 PM
...Anybody?
Finwe
02-13-2004, 06:05 PM
It had to have been pretty good. Do we know any specific feats that he accomplished?
Lindolirian
02-13-2004, 06:21 PM
Well, you're on the wrong track. It wasn't exactly a good record. In fact, it was downright bad. It is clearly explained in one story that he shot x amount of times and only hit a low percentage of them. I'm basing my hypothetical question off of those specific shots.
HINT: He was a Man, and the shot(s) that did find their mark killed another Man.
Finwe
02-13-2004, 06:39 PM
Oh... right.....
Well... I know that Avranc was the one who killed Manthor in the Rebellion of Brethil, and I believe that he shot a total of two arrows at him, so wouldn't the percentage be 50%? The second shot was the one that killed him.
Lindolirian
02-13-2004, 06:44 PM
Ah, you are on the right track now, but your numbers are a bit off... very, very close though. ;)
Finwe
02-13-2004, 06:48 PM
Hmm... would it be 100%, since we don't know for sure if he shot that first arrow?
Lindolirian
02-13-2004, 06:53 PM
Nope... If you can't find all of the instances of his shootings, check out Manthor's dying words at least. That should make it quite clear.
Finwe
02-15-2004, 09:39 PM
25%?
Gil-Galad
02-16-2004, 09:57 AM
40-45%?
Lindolirian

C'mon folks... No random guessing. That won't get us anywhere. Please justify your answer.

Lindolirian, please could you start a new thread with your current question?
Thanks. :)
Lindolirian

Let's try to follow the standard trivia rules on this thread and keep it in the First Age.
A hypothetical question:
If Avranc were in an archery contest what would his hit percentage most likely be?
Tulkas the Mighty
02-18-2004, 07:41 PM
He shot and missed Manthor when being driven out of the the Moot Ring, then missed once again hitting the gate post by Manthors head, and finally hit him when Manthor was on his way back from Morwen's funeral. 33.3333%
Lindolirian
02-18-2004, 08:14 PM
It is a poor archer that will miss his mark at the third aim. -Manthor after he was hit by Avranc's third shot.
Good job Mr the Mighty especially on each instances of shootings!
Tulkas the Mighty
02-19-2004, 05:40 PM
Who suffered from the great Laep of Beren?
Miriel
02-20-2004, 01:12 PM
Curufin got grabbed by the throat and hurled backwards, so chiefly him.
His horse and Luthien both fell to the ground. But good actually came out of the leap for both of them, so I won't say they suffered from it.
Tulkas the Mighty
02-20-2004, 09:47 PM
Yep, that was it
Miriel
02-25-2004, 06:32 AM
What was the original name of Turin's sword Gurthang (before it was reforged), and what does that name mean?
Lindolirian
02-25-2004, 02:24 PM
It was called Anglachel, Iron of the Flaming Star.
Miriel
03-01-2004, 11:05 AM
Apologies for the delay. This is correct. :)

Hehe, that has happened to me too. Always people answering my questions...:p
Anyway, a question. What was the new name for Cabed-en-Aras, and why was it renamed?
Arvedui III
03-06-2004, 10:43 AM
Cabed-en-Aras was renamed Cabed Naeramarth, the leap of doom if I remember aright. It was renamed such after Nienor lept off it to her death.
NightKnight
03-08-2004, 01:08 PM

The Perky Ent
03-08-2004, 06:58 PM
Is it Galadriel?
Finwe
03-08-2004, 07:07 PM
Amarië of the Vanyar.
Umm.... Perky Ent... that would be incest... Galadriel was his sister.
Arvedui III
03-09-2004, 06:36 PM
Thank the Valar Finrod didn't go the way of Turin. Finwe has it. Your go.
Finwe
03-09-2004, 07:44 PM
Thank the Valar indeed.
Nimble fingers bore fell fire. Fell fire bore wounded fox. Wounded fox bore bright jewel. Bright jewel bored through darkness.

Something with Beren and the Silmaril?
The Perky Ent
03-13-2004, 09:17 AM
Finwë, yes i know that Galadriel is Finrod's sister, but...it was a random guess! Um...is the answer...um....(random again) Earendil?
Finwe
03-13-2004, 11:13 AM
Haha... it's all right...
Nope, both answers are incorrect.
Look closely at the word "fire." Go over all of the people in the Silmarillion, and pay attention to their epessi.
The Perky Ent
03-13-2004, 11:39 AM
Maedhros?
Finwe
03-13-2004, 05:59 PM
Close, but not the answer that I was looking for. The answer is the name of a line (or of a House).
The Perky Ent
03-13-2004, 06:21 PM
Fingolfin?
Finwe
03-13-2004, 07:19 PM
Nope.
Fingolfin II
03-13-2004, 10:38 PM
Feanor?
Miriel
03-14-2004, 06:14 AM
Right. I'll be daring and attempt to explain my answer. ;)
Nimble Fingers=Miriel (her epesse Serindë means 'needlewoman')
Fell fire=Feanor ('spirit of fire', etc etc)
Wounded fox=Maedhros (gained the 'fox' nickname due to red hair)
Bright jewel=Silmaril
So ... I s'pose it's Finwe's line, as Miriel can't be said to be of the House of Feanor.
Finwe
03-14-2004, 01:53 PM
Yep. Your go.

Oooh, yay, one I can do without referring to a book at all. :D The tower is Minas Tirith, and....
*pause*
Okay, maybe not. Erm, the isle is Tol Sirion, and this is changed to Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Does the actual tower's name definitely change...?
NightKnight
03-20-2004, 07:34 AM
Correct.

04-01-2004, 04:02 PM
WHat caused Luthien to swoon before Sauron?
Lindolirian
04-01-2004, 04:45 PM
The black magic in his breath or the smell of it!
The deadly vapor of its breath/ swept on before it. Swooning dies/ the song of Luthien and her eyes/ are dimmed and darkened with a fear/ cold and poinsonous and drear. (Lay of Leithan, 2735-2739)
luthien-elvenprincess
04-03-2004, 08:57 PM
Very close, Lindolirian. Actually, The Silmarillion mentions two things different things that caused her to swoon. You got one of them. :p
luthien-elvenprincess
04-06-2004, 04:51 PM
Come on...this is easy...just simple reading in the Sil...no thinking needed!
Lindolirian
04-06-2004, 05:29 PM
Well, not having my Sil on hand, I shall trust to my (not so) trusty memory. I think it was something to the effect of the Horror of his oncoming and his evil prescence...
The Perky Ent
04-08-2004, 03:30 PM
Wild shot, but because she drew the venom from Beren with her lips, she swooned because he swooned when he was poisoned?!?
luthien-elvenprincess
04-08-2004, 06:44 PM
No not there yet, Lindolirian. Way off, Perk. ;)
Lindolirian
04-09-2004, 06:19 PM
She swooned before the menace of the fell spirit in his eyes and the foul vapor of his breath.
Now how is that not the same as this?
"The black magic in his breath or the smell of it!"
and
"the Horror of his oncoming and his evil prescence... "
luthien-elvenprincess
04-10-2004, 03:51 PM
LOL, if you can't see the difference between "the menace of the fell spirit in his eyes" and " the horror of his oncoming and his evil presence"--then I can't help you. But, your second answer is the one for which I was looking!
It is now your turn, please proceed. :)
