How 'bout Ostoher the 7th King of Gondor?

Rune Son of Bjarne
07-13-2006, 02:01 PM
I know that there was only 6 High Kings of the Noldor, but if you count Maedhros there would be 7! The other would then be Fëanor

Gil-Galad
07-13-2006, 02:08 PM
nope, super clsoe though Rune, go back to the fist clue though, 'other'

Macalaure
07-13-2006, 02:15 PM
Another wild guess: Nerdanel?

Gil-Galad
07-13-2006, 02:19 PM
not wild at all, bang on! your turn.

Rune Son of Bjarne
07-13-2006, 02:19 PM
Finarfin ?

Gil-Galad
07-13-2006, 02:22 PM
Sorry my dear Rune, macalaure already answered correctly

Macalaure
07-13-2006, 02:36 PM
Thank you! :)

Who were the only two Sindar who, most probably, once used Quenya - after Thingol's ban?

I want names and occasion.

Rune Son of Bjarne
07-13-2006, 02:50 PM
do they have to be of pure Sindar origin?

Macalaure
07-13-2006, 02:51 PM
Yes, they do.

Gil-Galad
07-14-2006, 07:09 AM
question confuses me but i'll go for the obvious, Celeborn and Galadriel?

Macalaure
07-14-2006, 07:16 AM
No, unfortunately. And since when is Galadriel one of the Sindar? ;)

I'll try to clarify: After he found out about the kinslaying Thingol banned Quenya from his realm and forbade its usage to all Sindar. Yet, even after it, there are two Sindar who, in all probability, dared to speak Quenya at one specific point of time.

Anguirel
07-14-2006, 09:01 AM
Eol and Maeglin before Turgon?

EDIT: In the unlikely event that I'm right, let someone else ask a question...I'll have disappeared...

Macalaure
07-14-2006, 01:24 PM
Don't worry, Ang, you are not right. ;)

Maeglin is half a Noldo, and I cannot imagine Eöl ever uttered one word of the kinslayers' tongue.

Mmm, seems like it's more difficult than I thought. If nobody has the right answer tomorrow, I'll give a hint.

Rune Son of Bjarne
07-14-2006, 03:41 PM
even better, give it now! The only thing I could come up with yesterday was Eol and Maeglin and they turned out wrong. (What I already guessed they would be, especialy since Maeglin is half Noldor)

Macalaure
07-15-2006, 02:22 AM
Hint: We know exactly what they said. They both say the same three words.

Macalaure
07-18-2006, 01:50 AM
Still nobody?

And I thought that hint was too obvious, already. :(

What I meant by underlining 'exactly' is that we not only know it was said in Quenya, but we actually know the exact Quenya wording.

Rune Son of Bjarne
07-18-2006, 06:45 AM
Beleg and Mablung could have said "Auta i lómë" at the Nirnarth Arnoediad. . . (it is quenya right?)

Macalaure
07-18-2006, 08:15 AM
It is Quenya. The Silm says, that all that heard Fingon's welcome to Turgon answered by it. So, unless Beleg and Mablung have been sitting on their ears, they said it.

Your thread, Rune.

Rune Son of Bjarne
07-20-2006, 12:52 PM
Would somebody else care to take over for me as I am going away for a week, from Saturday morning ?

Gil-Galad
07-20-2006, 01:37 PM
i will be honoured my friend

Gil-Galad
07-20-2006, 01:42 PM
Name the place that is similar to "door of water"

Macalaure
07-26-2006, 08:04 AM
I guess it's wrong, but since nobody else wants to try:

Gates of Sirion?

Valier
07-26-2006, 11:53 AM
or..... Annon-in-Gelydh? or Sirannon?

Gil-Galad
07-26-2006, 01:19 PM
Valier as it! your turn

Valier
07-26-2006, 04:12 PM
Really!!!!????? I got one? Awesome!!!! :D It will take me a little bit to come up with one, but I shall return!

Oh and Gil.....which one was it?

Valier
07-26-2006, 04:31 PM
I'm hoping this is First Age.....

Who shouted "Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië! ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë!" and what and who shouted back?

I know it's a long one, but I haven't been able to go for awhile:D

Gil-Galad
07-26-2006, 08:01 PM
Beren perhaps?

oh and it was Sirannon

Dimturiel
07-27-2006, 01:37 AM
Fingon shouted that and all those that heard him answered back shouting: Auta i lome!" (" The night is passing!")

Valier
07-27-2006, 10:58 AM
YAAA!!! Your go Dimturiel:)

Dimturiel
07-28-2006, 11:07 AM
Why, thank you.

Name the Men that were alowed to enter Gondolin.

Valier
07-28-2006, 11:12 AM
Húrin and Huor?

Macalaure
07-28-2006, 11:31 AM
...and Tuor.

Dimturiel
07-29-2006, 02:11 AM
Well, you're both right. So the first of you that gets here can ask the next question.

Macalaure
08-02-2006, 09:06 AM
Alright, if Valier doesn't want to, I will.

Odd sword out:

Anguirel
Glamdring
Gurthang
Orcrist

Macalaure
08-23-2006, 07:58 AM
Nobody? Not one guess? :(
I won't give a hint unless I get a guess, no matter how wild.

Rune Son of Bjarne
08-23-2006, 09:37 AM
Gurthang was the only sword wich was never in Gondolin

Macalaure
08-23-2006, 09:45 AM
Correct, of course.

Go ahead!

Rune Son of Bjarne
08-23-2006, 10:32 AM
and to think that I was about to say that it was because Gurthang was the only one reforged. . . . good thing I changed my mind.

Wich grave is said to have survived the destruction of Beleriand.

(The grave was in Beleriand of course)

I know it kind of goes into the second age and are not realy a good question, but my mind does not work to day.

Lindolirian
08-23-2006, 11:22 AM
Morwen's grave.

Rune Son of Bjarne
08-23-2006, 11:29 AM
yup

Good to see you again Lindolirian

Lindolirian
08-23-2006, 11:36 AM
Right-o then, Rune!

What was the Cum nan Arasaith?

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-15-2006, 03:02 AM
The Mound of Avarice, if memory serves.

Lindolirian
11-16-2006, 10:46 AM
Fine job, hit us with another.

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-16-2006, 05:04 PM
What is the oldest heirlom of Men?

Tarpaladin
11-19-2006, 11:25 AM
The sceptre of the northen kingdom of Arnor, formerly the sceptre of the Lords of Anadunie of Numenore.

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-19-2006, 01:34 PM
I would think that it was The Ring of Barahir

Macalaure
11-19-2006, 01:57 PM
Either that or the Dragonhelm of Dor-lómin, I think.

Gil-Galad
11-19-2006, 08:07 PM
Didn't Beor have a staff or something...

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-19-2006, 10:52 PM
Rune Son of Bjarne has it right - it was the Ring of Barahir.

Your thread :D

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-20-2006, 05:32 AM
Thanks for the thread. . .

Who met his ending at the Caragdűr ?

(Not the best of questions)

Valier
11-20-2006, 08:17 AM
Was it Eol?

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-20-2006, 08:38 AM
yup. . .take it away thou kitten one

Valier
11-20-2006, 04:54 PM
On what day did the Nirnaeth Arnoediad begin?

Beleg Cuthalion
11-20-2006, 05:55 PM
On what day did the Nirnaeth Arnoediad begin? I don't know of any exact date. is it then midsummer F.A. 472, But on the other hand I also have the Spring 471 F.A. But agian no exact day for it.

Valier
11-21-2006, 10:57 AM
What day of the battle did it begin is what I am looking for.

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-21-2006, 09:40 PM
in the spring of 471 First Age, on Midsummer's Day, I do believe.

Valier
11-22-2006, 11:12 AM
I am looking for a specific day.......How many days of battle went by before this day?

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-22-2006, 01:55 PM
Oh, I think I see what you're asking. It was the fourth day of the war that the Nirnaeth officially began - before I thought you just wanted the start of the war in general.

Valier
11-22-2006, 05:31 PM
Your correct!!! It was the fourth day. The thread is yours Celebriel. :D

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-22-2006, 10:23 PM
All right :D

edit - i just realized my question was very close to a previous one I had not seen.

New question :

Who was called the Club-foot?

Dimturiel
11-23-2006, 12:40 PM
He was Sador, Hurin's servant and Turin's friend.

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-23-2006, 07:19 PM
Not quite the one I am looking for, however he is connected to Turin.

Thinlómien
11-24-2006, 04:12 AM
Brandir then, by any chance?

Tarpaladin
11-24-2006, 10:46 AM
Rune Son of Bjarne has it right - it was the Ring of Barahir.

Your thread :D

The question was for the oldest heirloom of Men, wasn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Ring of Barahir was forged by an Elven craftsman, not a Man. It was then given to Beren by Finrod Felagund I think, to pass down all the generations before arriving with Aragorn. Been a while since I read The Silmarillion, but I think that's correct.

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-24-2006, 11:51 AM
yes it was made by elves, but never an elven heirloom. It was given to men and became an heirloom in their house.

I am quite sure that the definition "heirloom of men" fits the Ring of Barahir.

Tarpaladin
11-24-2006, 01:04 PM
I'll wind my neck in then. :D

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-26-2006, 11:41 PM
Very good point, Tarpaladin, I thought the same way until recently when I discovered otherwise on another forum :)

Anyways, Thinlomien now has the thread -the answer I sought was indeed Brandir.

Sorry for the delay! I went home for the weekend and didn't have any internet access.

Thinlómien
11-27-2006, 02:35 AM
Which son(s) of Fëanor died first?

Celebriel Esgaledhel
11-27-2006, 06:33 PM
this is just off the top of my head, but was it Celegorm? Either him or the twins, methinks. It's been several years since I last read the Sil, so my memory's hazy at best when I don't take the time to look something up.

Beleg Cuthalion
11-27-2006, 07:19 PM
I'm going to go for Celegorm, Caranthir and Curufin. died F.A. 507

-Beleg

Thinlómien
11-30-2006, 02:17 AM
You're correct, Beleg.

Sorry for being a few days late, but I was unsure of the answer myself and always forgot to check it. :o :)

Tarpaladin
12-01-2006, 09:45 AM
Nice sig btw Beleg. An old Civil War song isn't it?

Gil-Galad
12-01-2006, 10:11 AM
Nice sig btw Beleg. An old Civil War song isn't it?

your thinking of the drummer boy

Celebriel Esgaledhel
12-01-2006, 10:45 PM
His sig is from The Mistrel Boy. I love the Minstrel Boy! Celtic song/tune originally, last I remember. Most notably it's used in the Black Hawk Down soundtrack; it plays during the credits.

Anyways...just had to rave about that song...

Valier
12-03-2006, 03:25 PM
Beleg? It's your turn!! :D

Beleg Cuthalion
12-03-2006, 06:27 PM
Whoa! Sorry, I completely forgot about this! :o Umm… Let’s see The chain with which Melkor was wrapped with, was made by Aulë and the chain consisted of six different metals ( copper, silver, tin, lead, iron and gold ) The metal that he had blended of these he called what?

I'm very pleased that you all like my sig. :)

If anyone want's to here the song from BHD you can listen to it here

The Minstrel Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdVN1P16L8o)

Celebriel Esgaledhel
12-06-2006, 07:50 PM
Angainor was made of Tilkal, I believe. Good question! :)

Beleg Cuthalion
12-07-2006, 09:09 PM
Angainor was made of Tilkal, I believe. Good question! :)

Thanks, and yes of course your right.

Celebriel Esgaledhel
12-08-2006, 03:01 PM
On the same note then:

What was the name of the manacles used to chain Melkor?

Beleg Cuthalion
12-08-2006, 03:16 PM
On the same note then:

What was the name of the manacles used to chain Melkor?

Celebriel Esgaledhel
12-08-2006, 05:42 PM
Correct, of course :D Take it away!

Beleg Cuthalion
12-09-2006, 09:11 PM

Thinlómien
12-11-2006, 07:55 AM

Beleg Cuthalion

Thinlómien
12-19-2006, 03:17 AM
Thanks for reminding me, Valier. :)

What was the name of the Elven maid who looked after Túrin in Doriath?

Gothmog
12-19-2006, 06:53 AM
Nellas?

Thinlómien
12-19-2006, 07:44 AM
Indeed.

I'm glad to see you around again, Gothmog, though I'm not that delighted of the sight of the text in your avvie, or actually rather the language it's in... ;) :D

Gothmog
12-19-2006, 01:59 PM
Thank you, Queen of Penguins. I'm coming and going, as always... And at least you understood the meaning of the text in my avvie! I know that you, deep down in your heart, love the beautiful language of Sweden;) Is it not time to take up the swedish lessons again? ;) :D

Enough of that, I know you're all waiting to hear the next question. And ladies and gentlemen, here it is:

What was the name of the bow that gave name to "Dor-Cúarthol"?

The owner is one of my personal favourites...

The Might
12-19-2006, 03:52 PM
Belthronding

Gothmog
12-19-2006, 04:27 PM
Correct, of course. The Downs seem to have a new Quiz champion!

The thread is yours.

The Might
12-19-2006, 04:45 PM
When was Gondolin completed?

Rune Son of Bjarne
12-20-2006, 10:27 AM
Only because I am not using the same amount of time on the BD as I used to, Gothmog :smokin:

Gondolin was completed in the year 126 of the first age.

The Might
12-20-2006, 01:31 PM
indeed...:p

Rune Son of Bjarne
12-20-2006, 03:23 PM

when was Nargothrond founded?

Valier
12-20-2006, 04:02 PM
When fifty years of the sun had passed?

The Might
12-21-2006, 08:12 AM
100 First Age

Rune Son of Bjarne
12-21-2006, 08:28 AM
Yes it is in the year 100 of the first age. . .so unless the sun did not apear until the year 50, TM gets the thread.

The Might
12-21-2006, 08:54 AM
well, since the Sun rose at the beginning of the First Age, it would mean it was 100 years of the sun until Nargothrond was completed

new one:

What is the name of the lake near Mount Rerir?

Valier
12-21-2006, 01:09 PM
Are you looking for lake Helevorn?

The Might
12-22-2006, 02:35 AM
yes ;)

Valier
12-22-2006, 09:15 AM

Beleg Cuthalion
12-28-2006, 08:46 PM
How many times did Fingolfin wound Morgoth ? Off the top of my head... 7 wasn't it? Or maybe 8 including the last one. Looks like I'm going to have to get my book.

The Might
12-29-2006, 05:26 AM
yep 8
I hoped to make it tricky because as he died he managed to stab Melkor with Ringil in the foot

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 10:28 AM
yep 8
I hoped to make it tricky because as he died he managed to stab Melkor with Ringil in the foot

It was a really good one I just remember numbers well. I don't think mine is quite as good, but I can't think of anything better right now.

Who in the first age besides Beren lost his hand?

The Might
12-30-2006, 10:52 AM
I like it...
Let's see, I'd say Maedhros

poor Fingon, but there was no other way :(

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 12:18 PM
I like it...
Let's see, I'd say Maedhros

poor Fingon, but there was no other way :( Such is war... but he than of course he did become an even more deadly swordsman with his left hand after that. http://webpages.charter.net/connectingzone/armed/30.gif

Oh yeaaah you got (I bet you knew that already though)

The Might
12-30-2006, 12:26 PM
nice smiley btw :D

a little harder this one perhaps:

What emblem did Tuor's shield have?

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 12:45 PM
nice smiley btw :D

a little harder this one perhaps:

What emblem did Tuor's shield have?Perhaps... A white swans wing on a feild of blue.

And about the smily... I thought it looked close to the point. :D

The Might
12-30-2006, 12:46 PM
hmm...you're correct, I must try harder when it comes to questions

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 12:50 PM
Thier good questions, it's just that they are from the one of the books that I read the most. Mine: What was Glamdring's scabbard made out of?

The Might
12-30-2006, 01:05 PM
ivory...

too bad your question is from UT, my personal favourite, though I usually only read the 3 and 4 parts of the UT

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 04:05 PM
Yeah too bad, try this one on for size. What was the name of the leader of the Warriors of Gondolin clad in tassels of silver and gold, bearing the emblem of the Harp?

The Might
12-30-2006, 04:06 PM
easy one

Salgant

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 04:08 PM
easy one

Salgant

Yeaaaaah... next one will be harder.

Btw this is great, I haven't played Q and T like this for over a year.

The Might
12-30-2006, 04:10 PM
lol...I think I will take that as a compliment...

Earendil's ship was built with wood from trees from...???

btw, I always hated Salgant for hiding like a coward instead of fighting alongside his men

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 04:13 PM
lol...I think I will take that as a compliment...

Earendil's ship was built with wood from trees from...???

btw, I always hated Salgant for hiding like a coward instead of fighting alongside his men Gee I don't remember that. I guess it's been to long since I read the HOME (As I don't own them) Btw white timber from the beech woods of Nimbrethil

The Might
12-30-2006, 04:25 PM
yep, Nimbrethil it is

I am enjoying the trivia as well, always liked quizzes

the harder they are, the more I enjoy answering them (correctly)

not finding the answer usually drives into more and more study of the books, and eventually I either find the answer or someone beats me to it...:)

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 04:28 PM

not finding the answer usually drives into more and more study of the books, and eventually I either find the answer or someone beats me to it...:) Yeah it's a lot of fun too. http://webpages.charter.net/connectingzone/food/46.gif Ok, here a monster one (I think anyway): What was the name for the greatly feared dragon of the sea?

The Might
12-30-2006, 04:43 PM
Dragon of the Sea...it is a monster one...

I really dunno...could it be a metaphor for Osse ?

Beleg Cuthalion
12-30-2006, 04:46 PM
Dragon of the Sea...it is a monster one...

I really dunno...could it be a metaphor for Osse ? To tell you the truth, I don't know. This question came up in a tivia contest I was in and I never found out what it was although there is a important historical archive where information about the dragon of the sea could be found.(don't know what this is) I thought you might know.

I guess I'll ask the guy.

The Might
12-30-2006, 04:59 PM
I recently read an article called "Dragons and Tolkien" and there several others were mentioned including the dragons from The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and from Farmer Giles of Ham, and dragons from his earlier works...
Dragons appear in his books as soon as in the Book of the Lost Tales, they are however not named...

I personally was quite surprised to see this question pop up...and since I couldn't think of any dragon I knew I thought it is a metaphor for a ship or a dweller of the Sea. But since no ship I knew could qualify I though of Osse since due to his let's say...temper, he could be associated with a dragon, and would most surely be feared especially by mariners

Yeah I don't know what to say, I'll ask the guy how did the question and let you know. Sooo try this one: What Beleriand escarpment ran 350 miles between Falas and Amon Ereb?

The Might

It could onyl be:
*drum roll*

ANDRAM :D

btw, I didn't know how long it was, new info :)

The Might

lol...no matter

new question:

What is the name of the forest located westward of the sources of the Narog ?

btw, the answer you might have been looking for might have been the Long Wall, which is another name for Andram

Birchwoods of Nimbrethil?

The Might

ok, I'll give you a hint: forget the Sil ;)

Valier
01-02-2007, 11:11 AM
ummmm Forget the Sil? Wouldn't that river only be named that in the Sil? All other maps are different. The river Norog flows from Irvin to the mouth of Sirion.

The Might
01-02-2007, 11:13 AM
not quite...the UT name it Narog as well ;)

The Might
01-02-2007, 11:27 AM
ok, I know it's a hard one

The woods of Nuath are mentioned during Tuor's journey together with Voronwe to Gondolin

How many tributaries did the river Gelion have ?

Valier
01-02-2007, 11:40 AM
10? I counted Tol Galen, and where it splits into little Gellon, greater Gellon and lake Helevorn

The Might
01-02-2007, 11:49 AM
nope...

some hints:
1. Tol Galen is an island, not a river
2. Gelion is formed after Little Gelion and Greater Gelion meet

Valier
01-02-2007, 11:50 AM
So 6 then?

The Might
01-02-2007, 12:10 PM
yes, this is where the name of Ossiriand comes from, The Land of the Seven Rivers (Gelion + 6)

Valier
01-02-2007, 12:15 PM

no, he actually cut this guys feet with his axe...

This question seems rather complex, or else I need to get the HOME. In the fall of Gondolin from the Book of Lost Tales 2: The Fall of Gondolin. It says "Tour. Ecthelion was wounded in the arm, and dropped his shield, and he must lean on Tuor, who could not leave him, even as the trampling feet of the dragon of fire passed overhead, and it seemed as if they would be crushed. Tuor hewed at the foot of the monster, and flame sprouted forth, and it screamed and lashed with
its tail, slaying many, Orcs and Gnomes both.” And also “There Tuor slew the Orc captains Othrod, Balcmeg, and Lug” But I see no other refences to any feet being cut by Tour. So I’m really at a loss on this one.

The Might
01-04-2007, 04:13 PM
Interestingly it seems it is not mentioned here that Lug is the one whose legs were cut from under his knees by Tuor with his axe...I know strange question

Anyway, since you did mention his name, and the question was indeed maybe a bit too much, please post the next question Beleg. :)

Beleg Cuthalion
01-05-2007, 01:56 PM
That's odd, what book did you get it from?

Q: How after death do men come the destination of which only Eru Ilúvatar knows?

I hope this is clear enough.

The Might
01-05-2007, 02:26 PM
From another version of the Fall of Gondolin:

There Tuor slew Othrod a lord of the Orcs cleaving his helm, and Balcmeg he hewed asunder, and Lug he smote with his axe that his limbs were cut from beneath him at the knee, but Ecthelion shore through two captains of the goblins at a sweep and cleft the head of Orcobal their chiefest champion to his teeth; and by reason of the great doughtiness of those two lords they came even unto the Balrogs.
Since I believe this version was not as old as the one you are talking about I take this information as more likely since Tolkien didn't change for nothing.

As for your question:

When Men die they goe to the Halls of Mandos where Nienna gathers them in her hall Fui, from there they are send aboard Mournië after their final judgment and they sail now south to the destination of which only Eru Ilúvatar knows.

"Then when she is laden, of her own accord she spreads her sable sail and before a slow wind coasts down those shores. Then do all aboard as they come south cast looks of utter longing and regret to that low place amid the hills where Valinor may just be glimpsed upon the far off plain" ~ from the Earliest Tales
