gilgalad told him and cirdan and elrond stood by gilgalad
NightKnight
06-28-2004, 04:30 PM
If it wasn't Elrond, then it must have been Cirdan.
Firefoot
06-28-2004, 08:10 PM
um, Cirdan and Elrond?
The Perky Ent
06-28-2004, 08:15 PM
um, Gil-Galad ;) and Elrond? Congrats on the thousand. I was on it a little while ago. It's fun, ain't it. But, if you post frequently in Fun and Games, it isn't that hard ;)
NightKnight
06-28-2004, 08:18 PM
Why do people keep guessing Gil-Galad? He was dead at that time.
The Perky Ent
06-28-2004, 08:23 PM
Ok, sorry. Um...but all of the combinations besides him are out!
Firefoot
06-28-2004, 08:29 PM
I for one, based my original guess off this sentence: "He [Isildur] alone stood by his father in that last mortal contest; and by Gil-galad only Cirdan stood, and I. But Isildur would not listen to our counsel." Though, if I had thought it through, you are right, Gil-Galad was dead.
Gil-Galad
06-28-2004, 08:34 PM
Firefoot has it!
Firefoot-1
2. Name one of the original races in Beleriand that in the end, turned too serve a higher master
The Perky Ent
06-28-2004, 08:39 PM
Man, I'm going for a real longshot, but I think it can work. Hopefully there's more than one right answer. But, is the answer, ents?
Gil-Galad
06-28-2004, 08:42 PM
no...it didn't say that the ents headed to arda...oh dear i've said too much
The Perky Ent
06-28-2004, 08:43 PM
umm...elves? You know your asking for race, not division, right?
Gil-Galad
06-28-2004, 08:44 PM
yes...its not elves either
Firefoot
06-28-2004, 08:45 PM

The Perky Ent
06-28-2004, 09:10 PM
I know the feeling. Anyways, the sword is Ringil, and by what it means, I don't quite follow. I know it was his glittering sword, but that's it. Also, the horse is Rochallor
Gil-Galad
06-28-2004, 09:13 PM
ooh so close...
Sword-Ringil
Horse-Rochellor
Meaning-nope! sorry...guess again! meh i'll give it too you, or should i? seeing how you stole my pic logo...trademark thing
Firefoot
06-29-2004, 05:31 AM
That gets me every time... I see Perky's avvie and think it's Gil-Galad...
Anyway, the sword's name doesn't have a meaning? It's only listed in one place in the Sil and says nothing about a meaning...
Gil-Galad
06-29-2004, 02:31 PM
last i remember, it meant "Northern Star"...well i give too Perky

Firefoot-3
Perky-3
Fingolfin II-2
9. how did Thranduils father die and why
Firefoot
07-07-2004, 02:45 PM
Oropher was slain in the Battle of Dagorlad, and as to "why", I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but he went to battle because he "forsaw that peace would not return unless Sauron was overcome. He therefore assembled a great army..." Also they were ill-equipped in weapons and armor.
Gil-Galad
07-07-2004, 02:49 PM
Firefoot-4
Perky-3
Fingolfin II-2
10.what brought the downfall of LothLorien?
(the reason "why" Oropher died was because he charged head-first at the black gate with, as you said, very little armor
Fingolfin II
07-07-2004, 05:42 PM
The downfall of Lothlorien? I'm not sure, but I'll say Galadriel passing over the Sea and Celeborn going to live in Rivendell, so the numbers of the people there dwindled and eventually no one lived there (as we saw in the Tale of Arwen and Aragorn).
Gil-Galad
07-08-2004, 10:47 AM
your right...but Firefoot wins anyway! your go FIREFOOT
Firefoot
07-08-2004, 12:51 PM

Fingolfin II

Firefoot
07-09-2004, 11:52 AM

wilwarin538
07-09-2004, 12:05 PM
then is it Gorbag?
Firefoot
07-09-2004, 12:14 PM
Nope.
Lindolirian
07-09-2004, 10:13 PM
Grishnakh?
Firefoot
07-10-2004, 05:02 AM
That's the one!
Lindolirian - 1
Fingolfin - 1
Saucepan - 1
4. Why did the Orcs serve Melkor?
Fingolfin II
07-10-2004, 05:44 AM
Because he forced them to do so through intimidation, since they were corrupted Elves in the beginning and they were forced to serve him even though they hated him deep down. Also because he offered them some degree of pleasure through violence and killing.
Firefoot
07-10-2004, 06:57 AM
Perfect.
Fingolfin - 2
Lindolirian - 1
Saucepan - 1

Firefoot
07-11-2004, 12:42 PM
Gil-Galad - that was the question at the end of the last page.
Gil-Galad
07-11-2004, 12:43 PM
i'm getting to stiff for this...
Lindolirian
07-11-2004, 01:17 PM
Moria orcs from the Misty Mountains followed the Company for revenge or whatever. Isengarders had orders from Saruman to bring Halflings to Isengard alive, and Grishnakh and his band from Mordor were under the direction of the Nazgul to do whatever possible to haunt the Ringbearer and possibly take it from him...
Firefoot

Lindolirian
07-12-2004, 07:35 PM
With iron.
Firefoot
07-12-2004, 09:27 PM
Yes, and that means it is a tie between Lindolirian and Fingolfin. So, this will be a tie-breaker question, only those two can answer.
How did the fight in the Tower of Cirith Ungol start?
Lindolirian
07-12-2004, 09:34 PM
It all started with Gorbag trying to pinch that pretty shirt...
Firefoot
07-12-2004, 09:35 PM
Ah, yes. In that case, please proceed. :)
Lindolirian
07-12-2004, 09:45 PM
Hmmm that was a bad idea answering that last one with no topic in prep for the next game.... But I think it'll work out anyhow:
Lays, Poems, and Songs (and their authors) is our next Topic. And the first question is:
1. Which lay is the longest of all written about the First Age?
Firefoot
07-12-2004, 09:47 PM
The Lay of Leithian.
Nilpaurion Felagund
07-12-2004, 09:49 PM
Narn i hin Húrin.
Lindolirian
07-12-2004, 09:51 PM
Nope!
Edit: Yes to Nil... cross posting... Oi!
Nil- 1
2. What was the Battle of Unnumbered Tears called in The Narn?
Nilpaurion Felagund
07-12-2004, 09:58 PM
Nirnaeth Arnoediad, perhaps?
Lindolirian
07-12-2004, 10:00 PM
Nirnaeth Arnoediad, perhaps?
No that was the battle's final name. The one I'm looking for was a predecessor to that. Its in the first few lines of the Narn.
Nilpaurion Felagund
07-12-2004, 10:04 PM
Nirnaeth Ornoth/Urnoth!
Lindolirian
07-12-2004, 11:17 PM
Correct!
Nil- 2
3. How many cantos make up the Lay of Leithan?
Firefoot
07-13-2004, 05:01 AM
13 complete ones, and some unwritten ones, seven as near as I can tell.
Lindolirian
07-13-2004, 08:16 PM
That'll do!
Nil- 2
Firefoot- 1
4. Who (according to a certain song) is a throned lord of wisdom with a deadly sword, a healing hand, a trumpet-voice, and a burning brand?
Gil-Galad
07-13-2004, 09:27 PM
Wouldn't that be Aragorn? probaly not...
Lindolirian
07-13-2004, 09:27 PM
Probably not...
Gil-Galad
07-13-2004, 09:31 PM
now that rings a bell, Turgon!
Lindolirian
07-13-2004, 09:32 PM
The wrong bell has been rung!
It's the "throned" part that is meant to throw you off... and it's working.
Gil-Galad
07-13-2004, 09:33 PM
I'm tempted to Say Thingol, but thats wrong...maybe Fingon...no...hint maybe at hand?
Lindolirian
07-13-2004, 09:37 PM
Aragorn was closest. The fellow that the song about was never throned; I don't know why it says it in the song, but it does, so I used it.
Gil-Galad
07-13-2004, 09:38 PM
hmm maybe Burning Brand is a hint...Denethor II? steward of Gondor
Lindolirian
07-13-2004, 09:39 PM
Yes burning is included, but not burning of himself.
This is from a song in the books, not a cryptic riddle of my own. Though I did pick and choose lines to make it tougher.
Gil-Galad
07-13-2004, 09:43 PM
Can i ask what age this person lived in...
Lindolirian
07-13-2004, 09:47 PM
All, but he was most prominent in the Third. (There I've given it away haven't I?)
Gil-Galad
07-13-2004, 10:07 PM
Meh Gandalf or ELrond
Lindolirian
07-14-2004, 11:30 AM
Well Gil-Galad, I'd give it to you, but you might think it's Elrond. Osse is the first one with the correct definitive answer. The song was Gandalf's "eulogy" sung by Frodo in Lorien.
Nil- 2
Firefoot- 1

5. Again, according to a song, what causes pools to be black and stones to crack?

Nilpaurion Felagund

A bat! It was mentioned in the Lay of Leithian, when Lúthien took form as one of Thû's messengers while headed for Angband.
Lindolirian
07-17-2004, 03:33 PM
Yeah, isn't that an awesome name for a bat? Anyway, last question, that is if Firefoot doesn't get it for the tie...
10. Who wrote the Noldolantë?
Firefoot
07-17-2004, 03:36 PM
Maglor.
NightKnight
07-17-2004, 04:00 PM
Bat in Swedish is "fladdermus" (mus=mouse). :p
Lindolirian
07-18-2004, 04:15 PM
Two points for NK :D
Nice timing Firefoot...
Ok for the tie breaker between Nilpaurion Felagund and Firefoot, I felt that I had to come up with a real whiz-banger.
11. What city (also the title of the poem) is described as being on a sable hill, by an azure sea, under an azure sky, and where no voice stirs?
*Remember this is for Firefoot and Nilpaurion Felgund only, as a tie breaker.*
Nilpaurion Felagund
07-18-2004, 08:42 PM
Kortirion? As in Kortirion among the Trees?
Lindolirian
07-18-2004, 09:52 PM
Technically Kôr, but it's the same city, so yes. It's your game!
Nilpaurion Felagund
07-18-2004, 09:54 PM
And our topic is...rivers.
1. What is the longest river in Beleriand?

3. In which river/stream was the last battle of the Nirnaeth fought?
Lindolirian
07-19-2004, 10:18 PM
It was in the Fens of Serech and that looks to be at the junction of Rivil (stream) and Sirion (river).
Nilpaurion Felagund
07-21-2004, 12:37 AM
But the brothers drew the remnant of the Men of the house of Hador about them, and foot by foot they withdrew, until they came behind the Fen of Serech, and had the stream of Rivil before them. There they stood and gave way no more.
(QS 20)
Rivil alone would have been accepable. :)

Lindolirian

Nilpaurion Felagund
08-08-2004, 11:48 PM
There [on the barrow of Finduilas Túrin] laid himself down, and a darkness fell on him, so that they thought he was dead. But Dorlas . . . said: " . . . see: here lies Mormegil himself, the great captain of Nargothrond. By his sword we should have known him, as did the Orcs." (UT I 2)

Thorongil

One more question; a tie seems fairly likely... ;)
10. Describe the relationship between Túrin and Saeros.
Fingolfin II
08-11-2004, 08:08 PM
They didn't like each other, to say the least. Saeros disliked Turin because he grudged him Thingol's favour, and Turin hated Saeros because of his animosity towards him, and especially his words against Morwen.
Gil-Galad
08-11-2004, 09:31 PM
Saeros also commented on the men of Hithlum, he said that the women ran around naked with there hair as there clothes, then he got hit by a cup...
Firefoot
08-12-2004, 06:02 AM
Fingolfin's answer is fine.
That makes it a tie between Fingolfin and Lindolirian. This is a tiebreaker question for those two only.
***Exactly how long was it from the time that Morwen and Nienor fled Dor-lomin and Túrin came back?
