I am asuming that because Hurin was incorrect, Turin is too? The same justification goes behind it being him as for his father (Hurin).
The only line that does not fit is;
"From reminders of my great despair"
I can't think of anything that reminded him of his great despair, i might find something but i'd have to re-read the entire chapter; "Of Turin Turambur"

It isn't a good guess, but it fits roughly and i just wanted to make sure it wasn't him so i can cross another candidate of my list. (which is still too long!)

Your assumption is correct.

If you've got a list, by the way, you may as well just say all the names on it as soon as you can so we can get moving on...

Turambar
08-08-2003, 07:59 AM
Daeron?

Gwaihir the Windlord
08-09-2003, 12:55 AM
No, but that's perhaps the closest yet in terms of a certain similarity. (Remember that you have to explain your answers....)

Gwaihir the Windlord

Hmmm... I'm going to have to stop doing this smilies/smile.gif. Someone answer this and I'll promise the next one will be easy.

For the (hopefully) final clue, X-Man is a Noldo.

I travelled long, and never far
From reminders of my great despair.
I could not leave them, deeply scarred
Works I devised, and left them there.

Luthien_ Tinuviel

I think it's Maglor.

I travelled long, and never far
From reminders of my great despair.-reminders of the silmarils and the Oath of Feanor that he took.
I could not leave them, deeply scarred
Works I devised, and left them there.-He was deeply scarred, literally and figuratively, because he almost repented the Oath but didn't in the end, and when he recovered the Silmarils with Maedhros, they burned his hands. Not sure about the works, except that he had to leave his lands during the Dagor Bragollach, so that's something he left.

As for the similarities to Daeron, Maglor was also a musician and a wanderer.

*exasperated laugh*.... you got it, but it wasn't a very good job was it? smilies/smile.gif Nothing more than a guess... Well, it was Maglor, but I'd better explain the riddle a little better.

I travelled long, and never far
From reminders of my great despair.-- The Sea, into which he had cast his Silmaril. He wandered along the coast for many years in lament for the loss of the Silmaril into it.
I could not leave them, deeply scarred
Works I devised, and left them there. -- The 'works' were the songs that he sang in lament for the Silmaril, and since no-one heard them but the sea and the wind they were 'left there' and were not known by anyone else. Deeply scarred, of course, because of the Oath; bound to the Sea because of his misery about the Silmaril affair.

So, that's it. Had to explain just about the whole riddle for that guess, but I'm glad it's finally over. Your turn, Luthien.

Luthien_ Tinuviel

Brave heart he said,
And none more than his own,
Who was rewarded in his crime,
And having risked all was given a new home.

It took me a while to come up with a good one. I don't know how hard that's going to be. And I know the meter's not perfect- I'm not that good at rhyming, but I think it's okay. smilies/smile.gif

Turambar
08-15-2003, 02:30 PM
Beregond called Faramir "brave heart", and himself showed great bravery in leaving his post and defending his captain against Denethor's servants, though this was technically a "crime". I believe he ws later rewarded by Aragorn by being sent to Ithilien.

No.

One word in the clue is an Elvish pun (i.e. an English translation of an Elvish word that will help you).

Cathelm

Could it be Elwe/Thingol?

He was the leader of the first three companies of Quendi that followed the Valar into the west, and then became the first of the last Eldar in Middle Earth.

Turambar

Elwë is correct -- last (named) of the elvish ambassadors, but "first" of the Teleri (elvish for last).

Your turn.

Thanks, Turambar! Hope this next one isn't all too difficult.

Sorry for the delay, I hope this isn't too easy or too terrible. Here you are:

Find me at the start
In excess of questioned time.
Or in the initial note
Of a current rhyme.

Many were the tears
Of grief that filled my eyes
Reminded by my aching heart
When love ended in lies
Everlasting as the rain that falls
Now from the clouded skies.

In the shadow of my loss
The echo of my cry
My shattered heart would stop.

A hint:
The first paragraph: Two lines form a cryptic clue toward the person's name, and two give instructions on solving the second paragraph.
Second Paragraph: A clue toward the person's name, revealed by directions in the first paragraph.
Third Paragraph: Clue toward the person themself. This paragraph should be taken quite literally.

Arestevana

Turin is the answer I was looking for. Just to clarify: Lalaith, meaning laughter, was the sister whom he lost to illness, and Nienor, 'mourning' was his other sister, who cast herself into the Teiglin. So he lost both laughter and sadness.

Perhaps the answer is Lorien the Maia. He had part of Lothlorien named after him; the 'dream' part at least. And his spouse was Este, who is perhaps the lady mentioned in the last stanza. I admit that Lorien doesn't really fit the rest of the verse, but I thought perhaps...

Tárafëaien

Okay I'm guessing Aragorn. My reasons are:

I am the heir - he's the heir of Gondor and the race of Numenor(sp).

I come in time of need - came to Gondor during the battle of Pellenor fields, and saved both Gondor and all Middle earth from Mordor.

My father and mother both killed
in the forests green - His parents died when they were in the north (not in Gondor)

I come to reclaim the throne
From which the stunted took -I'm thinking these are the orcs of Mordor.

I killed the 3 C's in the 2nd of the 3rd - This one I'm not sure about. But maybe its the 2nd battle of the 3rd age or something.

Thorongil

My guess is Dior, son of Beren and Luthien, because he killed Celegorm, Curufin and Caranthir( 3 C's).

Elrond of Rivendell
01-10-2004, 04:34 PM
My guess would be Dior, Thingol's heir.
My reasons are as follows:
- Dior IS (Thingol's) heir.
- He comes after Thingol's death, so somehow the realm of Doriath needed a new ruler.
- Dior's father Beren was mortally wounded by Carcharoth in the green forest of Doriath, his wife Lúthien chose to became mortal and griefed to death, so maybe one can consider her as being "dead" in Middle-Earth, killed also by Carcharoth. (okay I admit this is the weak point.)
- Dior comes to Doriath in order to reclaim his grandfather's throne taken by the Dwarves (stunted people).
- Dior killed the Three C's (Celegorm, Caranthir and Curufin) in the second of the three great downfalls (Nargothrond, Doriath, Gondolin) of the First Age.

Thorongil got it first, but elrond explained it almost, the 2nd of the 3rd meant the 2nd kin slaying of the 3 kinslayings (teleri of avallone, doriath, sirion)and beren and luthien were both killed in ossriand by Sons or orcs, don't remeber. well thorongil or elrodn may anwser, whoever gets here first

Lalaith

Quite correct!
It was actually she, not Turin, who set fire to her hall after Turin killed Brodda.

Actually I wouldn't say that any of the host of the Dead was really "buried" under the Mountains; somehow they were still living when Aragorn meets them.
So you have to think of another character - The King of the Dead is wrong. smilies/wink.gif

Ok well in the book there is a bit where they find a dead man lying by a door that he could not get through.
I can't remember exactly but was it maybe Beren?

Wasn't Baldor of Rohan the man who entered the paths of dead and never came back, thereby making him the dead man at the door under the mountain?

Elrond of Rivendell
01-14-2004, 06:11 PM
Baldor was not the dead man at the door, since his body was found only after 'time unreckoned had passed' since the Grey Company passed the door, but he is exactly what I have been looking for. smilies/smile.gif
Good work, Arvedui. Your turn.

That's quite alright, Master Elrond. Please don't leave the board! Your puzzles would be missed.

Here we are:

Steward's friend, friend of kings,
Mixed up in all the rings and things.
I was a prince of old
swift and bold.

I know the last line sounds stupid (if the whole thing sounds stupid, please don't enlighten me), but it makes a sort of sense. If this seems too much like a cryptic clue, I'm sorry. Also, name the steward if you can.

I don't think that Gandalf was really friend of stewards, after seeing Denethors reaction to him

symestreem

It is none of these. The steward in question is not Denethor, and it is not the person per se who is swift. It is something relating to him.

Estanesse
01-22-2004, 05:17 PM
Elrond descended from the high king of the Noldor. Friend of Gandalf who is a steward and Isildur a king.

symestreem
01-23-2004, 06:32 AM

Finwe
01-23-2004, 11:51 AM
Could it be Pippin?

Gandalf was described as a steward, and Pippin is definitely his friend.
Pippin was indeed an extraordinary man (another definition of "prince") and was called Ernil i Pheriannath ("Prince of the Halflings") in Gondor, effectively making him a "Prince."
He was definitely mixed up in the War of the Rings.
He was also swift and bold in rescuing Faramir and realizing that he would have to defy the orders of Denethor to do so.

Eowyn, becuase it is foltold that no man would kill the witch king and she did. And also.

He sought to wrench away my precious treasure

The ones most dear to me I lost
But this time to a friend.

Eorl of Rohan
01-31-2004, 05:10 AM
Deagol first came to my mind, who found the ring and lost it to a friend, but then pride and anger does not fit.

Maybe precious treasure is a silmaril or Naugrafarig, not the one ring? I'd have to think about this one.

Precious ONES... MAybe it signifies Feanor? But then, Morgoth Bauglir was his greatest enemy, so the last line doesn't fit.

Why is no one posting for the last few days?

That would be because I forgot, entirely, that I had posted on this thread. I am very sorry, everyone. Here is a new riddle.

I am the Silverlode, yet lack speech in wrath.
A chief of the East walks the edge in my path.
A craftsman am I, whose craft, in the West,
Was seen by one carrying a craft of my best,
This craft I had given, (this craft, one of three)
To a lord of the coast, who then gave it to he.
At the hand of a craftsman like myself I would die-
Yet his craft mocked my own, you must note. Who am I?

Estanesse
02-13-2004, 07:18 AM
Are you Celebrimbor,

Celeb the Sindarin word for silver. The chief of the east is Sauron who later killed Celebrimbor, and mocked him by making the one ring.
Gandalf has seen his craft in the west ( ;) ) and is in posession of one of the three (Narya) given by Cirdan a lord of the coast.

Arestevana
02-14-2004, 10:40 AM
Yes, I am! Correct on almost every point, Estanesse: Please continue. :)

For those who like to know these things, The first two lines were merely meant to be a cryptic clue to the name: Silverlode = Celebrant - (speech in wrath = rant) = celeb + (edge = rim) + (Cheif of the east = Bor) = Celebrimbor.

Sleepy Ranger
02-26-2004, 10:08 AM
The numbers? Lets see. 720. Hmm. Has to do with Rohirrim. So there'd be horses. Now lets see. A horse has 4 legs a man has 2. Now lets see, A horse for every man. A total of 6 legs. 120. So that would be 60 men 60 horses. Then 642 left the battleground. So that gives 107. 53.5 Men and horses so making it even I'd say 54 men 53 horses. Then 78 legs died. 13 died. so 6 men and 7 horses. Now what do I do? Am I on the right track? Do any of these numbers actually mean something? :(

Arvedui III
02-26-2004, 12:28 PM
Ack! Too many big numbers! The legacy bit makes me think of Eomund, though.

luthien-elvenprincess
02-27-2004, 07:09 AM
I am stuck...here is what I have so far.

Eomer said he lost 15 men and 12 horses in the battle with the orcs beside Fangorn forest. This loss totals 78 legs. Seven hundred and twenty minus 78 equals the 642 legs that Estanesse said left the battleground victorious.
I can't figure out the 720 exactly though...Legalas sees 105 riders of Rohan coming in the distance and it is mentioned that there are 3 horseless riders (which matches perfectly with the fact of 15 men and 12 horses lost in battle). But 105 riders and 3 riderless horses equals 702 legs instead of 720. Possible typo, Estanesse??? I am at a loss to account for the extra 18 legs.

I have spun the rest of the riddle in so many ways trying to figure it out...I am dizzy. Another hint, please!;)

I am also thinking that one of the songs about the Rangers said something about 'The lost who knows the way'. But, I can't find it. Does this sound familiar to anyone???

Estanesse
02-27-2004, 11:41 AM
There is no typo error :D.
120* 4= 480

Is it Gimli? The left behind in darkness part reminds me of Gimli's "an elf will go underground where a dwarf will not?"

Wow, that was a tough one! Garulf was one of the 12 men who died and therefore was 'left behind in darkness' his horse was given to Aragorn (who was in need of speed).

My turn:
An answer for Yavanna,
For a short, no glossal gift.
Blossoms and bluegrass became my forte
Perchance, I'm shopping for a lotion to assuage my arid periderm?

Finwe, you are correct with the Entwives.

My husband thinks that when I go to the mall, that I may never come home, cuz I take so long (just his ridiculous little opinion:rolleyes:). Therefore, I always wonder if the missing entwives just got lost at the mall shopping for lotion (since their skin/bark was so rough).

Oh well... anyway.... your turn..

Helm Hammerhand.
The Rohirrim went to the mountains for safety when their land was invaded by Dunlendings. Helm had a great horn and sounded it going to battle. Well...the men of Rohan rode to battle because they were Horse-lords. Hammerhand was the name given him because on his ability to kill with one blow of his fist.
