View Full Version : Who Am I?
Pitchwife

Thanks!:)
Another one about family relations (should be fairly easy):
Father was a wizard's friend,
Brother went to sea,
Poison I, my son renowned -
Guess who I may be!
Urwen
05-02-2010, 12:11 PM
Celebrian?

My last attempt. If this isn't right,I'll retreat for a while.
Eowyn?
Pitchwife
05-02-2010, 03:17 PM
Sorry to disappoint you yet again, but it's not Éowyn either.
To keep you from further following the wrong track, note that it says "poison", not "poisoned".
Urwen
05-03-2010, 12:45 AM
Ah.Is this person on side of Light or side of Darkness?
Pitchwife
05-03-2010, 02:08 PM
Light or darkness? Hmmm. A brighter shade of grey, I suppose. Like most people. I don't think the person in question really bothered about such things.
Urwen
05-03-2010, 02:28 PM
Let me rephrase it then.Does he/she work for Morgoth/ Sauron or not?
Pitchwife
05-03-2010, 02:45 PM
S/he would never dream of doing such an indecent thing. (Indeed most likely s/he never worked at all, be it for whomsoever.)
Urwen
05-03-2010, 10:11 PM
Ha.I know it-Elanor! The flower she was named after could be poison if used improperly
Mnemosyne
05-03-2010, 11:03 PM
The flower she was named after could be poison if used improperly
There is no evidence for that in canon. Just sayin'. (And no, I don't have a guess for this riddle!)
Urwen
05-04-2010, 08:41 AM
BTW,his/her father was a friend of a which wizard?
Legate of Amon Lanc
05-04-2010, 09:14 AM
Now now! That's a bit too concrete request, isn't it? I would like to keep the hints more vague, at least. And you are not the only one who is thinking about it, Urwen (even though it might seem like that to you). I think I have some good idea right now actually, but have to think. Time! I need time... (no, unlike as for Bilbo Baggins, this is not my answer :) )
Pitchwife
05-04-2010, 12:39 PM
No, it's not Elanor (see Mnemo's comment)... but that was a lot closer than anything else up to now.
As for the wizard, Legate is quite right, but being in a I generous mood today I'll tell you it was neither Alatar nor Pallando.:p
Nerwen
05-04-2010, 12:49 PM
Belladonna Took.
Legate of Amon Lanc
05-04-2010, 12:58 PM
Belladonna Took.
So casual, so obvious. You put us all into shame. I was starting to think that it was an object, but apparently...
Pitchwife
05-04-2010, 12:59 PM
Nerwen, you've got it! It's the Old Took's remarkable daughter, of course. Belladonna berries are poisonous; her father was a friend of Gandalf's (see The Hobbit); her brother Isengar was said to have 'gone to sea' in his youth (see LotR Appendix C); and she was Bilbo's mom - 'nuff said.
Nice guessing. Please proceed!
Nerwen
05-05-2010, 06:29 AM
Since Urwen wants me to hurry up:
Evil silenced all my laughter;
Fortunate, for what came after.

Hahahaha! Pretty devious to use my namesake as answer to this!*evil laugh*:smokin:

Very good.
Your turn, Urwen.
Urwen
05-05-2010, 07:11 AM
GO power of NAMESAKES!
And now,I'll pay ya back for all times you insulted her:
My love was strong
But I decided it to prolong.
We had a plan
to desert our clan.
Fiery monster cut off my way
as my kin say.
I found resemblance to a thing dear,in the world so vast
and I will for eternity last.
Who am I?
Andsigil
05-05-2010, 08:30 AM
Gil-Galad?
Urwen
05-05-2010, 08:48 AM
No.When did he and one other made up a plan to desert their kin?
Urwen
05-05-2010, 02:00 PM
Ok.I'll give a more subtle hint:
The speaker lasted for eternity literally, not metaphorically.;)
He/she is never told to die.
And it's NOT Maglor!;)
Oh,and I forgot to mention that the speaker owns grey object?
Hope that helps...
Have at it!!!!
Beorn of Carrock
05-05-2010, 02:10 PM
It's Earendil?
Urwen
05-05-2010, 02:14 PM
That's very original answer,but no.Earendil doesn't own a grey object.
Although it is connected to the Sea.;)
Oh,and the speaker is not evil.
Urwen
05-05-2010, 02:23 PM
I'll connect it
My love was strong
But I decided it to prolong.
We had a plan
to desert our clan.
Fiery monster cut off my way
as my kin say.
I found resemblance to a thing dear,in the world so vast
and I will for eternity last.
Grey object I owned
and in song I was renowned.
Who am I?
Beorn of Carrock
05-05-2010, 03:13 PM
So Luthien?
Urwen
05-05-2010, 10:08 PM
No. Though it is a woman...
Time for a little more direct hint.
One line in song is 'Riding like a swan'....
Ha!
Nerwen
05-05-2010, 11:09 PM
Nimrodel, then.
I thought it might be, from this line:
We had a plan
to desert our clan.
But I couldn't quite make sense of the rest– is "fiery monster" a metaphor for storm?
Also, if Nimrodel were still alive, wouldn't she have turned up eventually?
Beorn of Carrock
05-06-2010, 02:05 AM
So, what's the grey object of her?
Urwen
05-06-2010, 02:18 AM
Fiery monster is Balrog of Moria.
And grey object she owned were her shoes.
And I simply meant she is not reported to have died.
Anyway,it is Nimrodel. Carry on...:D

3. A thread may be considered stagnant if after at least 10 days:
no new question has been asked following confirmation of a correct answer, or
no response has been given by the question setter to the last answer. In addition, a thread may be considered stagnant if there has been no new post for 10 days or more. In any of these circumstances, anyone may ask a new question on the topic.
Following this rule,I'll pop in.With this:

rough am I at times

I tainted their white pride with red
but stood aside while the red turned to black
I'd have betrayed if not betrayed
My yet another betrayal was with faith repaid
Sought the end but was paid in loss
Yet none shall claim in gratitude I was lacking
My high hopes welded the children
adopted and born and the beloved youngest
In the darkness resigned plunged I,
My high delight set ablaze to grief and despair
Loslote

Maedhros?
I tainted their white pride with red (Teleri ships stained with blood)
but stood aside while the red turned to black (stood aside when the ships were burned)
I'd have betrayed if not betrayed (he would have betrayed Morgoth at the peace meeting, only Morgoth beat him to it)
My yet another betrayal was with faith repaid (not sure about this one)
Sought the end but was paid in loss (the end of his vow; he lost the Silmarils)
Yet none shall claim in gratitude I was lacking (he was grateful to the Valar for defeating Morgoth)
My high hopes welded the children (not sure about welded, but the children could refer to Elros and Elrond)
adopted and born and the beloved youngest (again, he adopted Elros and Elrond)
In the darkness resigned plunged I, (he threw himself into a volcano)
My high delight set ablaze to grief and despair (he won the Silmaril, but no longer had a claim to it)
Eorl of Rohan
05-16-2010, 09:56 AM
Yes, it is Maedhros. Good guess, Loslote. You got the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 9th lines correct.
(4) My yet another betrayal was with faith repaid -> Fingon repaid Maedhros with faith by freeing him from the menacles
(5) Sought the end but was paid in loss -> He sought to die, and asked Fingon to kill him, but was paid by the loss of a hand
(6) Yet none shall claim in gratitude I was lacking -> He was grateful to Fingon despite him having cut off his hand
(7) My high hopes welded the children -> The children refer to the Firstborn (Elves), the Children of Men (Men), and the children of Ainu (Dwarves) -> They were welded in an alliance against the Dark Lord
(8) adopted and born and the beloved youngest -> Eru Illuvatar calls the dwarves his adopted children, while the Firstborn is his children by creation, and the beloved youngest is of course the children of Men, the Secondborn.
(10) My high delight set ablaze to grief and despair -> The Silmaril burned Maedhros' hand, which drove him to grief and despair.

My sister dear, in wild woods
Wandered far from home.
My lord and husband always would
Follow her under stary dome.
I, in golden gardens blooming
Happy danced with sister-in-law,
While songs, from tiny beauties singing,
Mingled with the raucous caw.
Famous I am not, for no great deeds
Have my hands performed.
But one who left my side for a steed
Is everywhere beloved.
Who am I?

Alright then...
My sister dear, in wild woods
Wandered far from home. (Yavanna wandered in the woods of Middle Earth, very far away from Valinor)
My lord and husband always would
Follow her under stary dome. (Orome, her husband, was the other one who wandered there)
I, in golden gardens blooming (the gardens of Laurelin)
Happy danced with sister-in-law, (Nessa, the dancer, was Orome's sister)
While songs, from tiny beauties singing, (tiny beauties being birds)
Mingled with the raucous caw. (caw from a crow, another bird - "the birds sang at her passing")
Famous I am not, for no great deeds
Have my hands performed. (Well, yeah)
But one who left my side for a steed (Arien, for her "steed" the sun)
Is everywhere beloved. (Well, everyone loves the sun!)

Okay, if the answer's Lalaith, I'm going to laugh, but I don't think that would be "a bit tricky". ;)

Well I'm pretty sure I have a good response to this, since you're being ever so impatient and want an answer. I have to get back to work but I'll be on tonight and will explain my answer fully. *leaves you all in anticipation*
Urwen
06-21-2010, 11:20 AM
*sigh* The answer is Lalwen...
I'll set up an easier riddle:

Dishonourable death I had

Who am I?
Pitchwife
06-21-2010, 04:15 PM
Are you a bird? Are you a plane? Is your name by any chance Rumpelstiltskin?
None of the above? Thought so. Alright then, you're Gorlim.
(PS. - Lalwen (=Lalwendë=Írien/Írimë, right?) was a nice one, but she went into exile with Fingolfin, didn't she, so why were they 'apart'?)
satansaloser2005
06-21-2010, 04:53 PM
I don't know, Pitch, Rumplie and the like used illusion. She's talking about ilussion, which is something completely different. I don't think the answer's going to be that simple, not with that specific of word choice. Wow, it's difficult....
Incidentally, I had a really clever response, but decided not to use it. Me. (I was born in a town whose meaning is very roughly "happy", I grinned a lot as a baby, and I grew up apart from my idiot brother who is a very strange child.) I also really considered using something from another fandom just to spice things up and keep Urwen's impatience at bay, but couldn't find anyone who worked with whom I could sufficiently snark. It disappointed me to no end. You know me!
Urwen

Urwen
12-22-2010, 02:42 PM
*sigh* Two months already... so I'll do it again. If you don't want me doing this so often, then I suggest you use your turns properly....
Anyway, it'll be uber easy this time
Happy was I, I danced a lot
Till my lover came along
My 'greedy' father demanded exchange
So we had to be strong
Old friends of our kind
Sent us great help
But in this situation I can do nothing
But wait and weep
In the end it all went fine
Thanks to invoking unexpected pity
Now we could in peace dine
and live our life in hidden city
(Now the last line was meant to drive people off the right track)

Hello? Have people abandoned this thread?
I'll give it one more try. And if someone guesses right and doesn't take a tun, I'll have to start a new thread. With list of people who guessed right, but didn't take a turn?
I wandered in dark woods,
there I met my fate,
my helmet was red
but I didn't serve Morgoth nor hate.
In first age I lived my day
alone at first, some might say.
bu lonliness didn't last long,
but while it did, I stayed strong
In dark woods I met my spouse,
That one old chap, named after Greek God,
my child and I later
on familiar way decide to trod.
In my home
bright and happy
I received a spear
sticking out of my belly.
Who am I?
And please, take the turn after you;ve guessed correctly.

As I'm sure you're aware, Urwen, people on this site have lives offline as well, and sometimes their real life commitments overshadow the continuation of your game. If someone forgets their turn, please do be patient with them, as most of us are adults and have jobs, families, and (heaven forbid) social lives to deal with that don't involve the Downs.
I'm sure most people are more than happy to participate in various activities on the Downs, this thread included, but pressuring us to respond is, I assure you, not the way to facilitate cooperation, and creating a new thread to shame people who have better things to do than reply to your posts is not the way we encourage participation on this site.
Please do be respectful of others' commitments and behave accordingly. Thank you.

Yes, there are a lot of characters in Middle-earth. That's why these games work. If this was the Mr. Bliss Forum, we couldn't play them, because we'd just run through the same list of 8 or so characters over and over.
How about Arvedui? Had some plans about being the High King and going to Gondor or something like that, but instead went up to the Bay of Forochel. Which did not end well for Arvedui.
Precisely that. :) Though I was careful not to say 'instead' - while the two were causally connected, I didn't think it would be fair to imply that he made a choice between the two.

That's the chap. More specifically, he said that no dwarf should enter Moria, because he alone had seen what waited within - Durin's Bane.
90 years later, he let Balin lead an expedition there. Dude had a very bad grasp of the lifespan of Balrogs.
Over to you.

By the way, you also have the honor of making a new riddle.

My actions lead to the death of exactly twelve people.
(This is one of my tricky ones, where the clue isn't what it seems at first glance)

Why was Gandalf so surprised to find one there? Catastrophic hole in his knowledge!

How large was Turin's outlaw band? Anyone know?
Wait, or is this circling back to Beren and Barahir again?
Why was Gandalf so surprised to find one there? Catastrophic hole in his knowledge!
Now there's an interesting question. My best answer is that everyone thinks of Balrogs as creatures of fire first; notably, Gandalf and Legolas only recognise Durin's Bane when it steps through the fire and catches alight. If Dain saw it in Shadow form, then he could have shared everything with Gandalf and still not tipped him off. (Evil shadow creatures are probably a tharni a dozen in Middle-earth.)

One of your thoughts is the right one.
And please make a new riddle.

Okay, so Barahir had twelve companions, and Barahir + eleven of them died. Beren was the sole survivor.
But whose actions led to their deaths? Hmm...
-Gorlim the Unhappy was the actual betrayer. His secret hunting for Eilinel led to his capture, and his yielding to Sauron's temptation led to his death and that of Barahir's band. So he gets the actions part.
-Sauron planned and organised their deaths, but also plenty more, so 'exactly' rules him out.
-Eilinel is blameless. Sauron seems to have used an illusion, not her actual spirit, to tempt Gorlim.
-Barahir could arguably be blamed, given that his actions in keeping the gang in Dorthonion led to their deaths... but that also, ultimately, led to Beren's death.
So I think the answer has to be Gorlim, son of Angrim, husband of Eilinel, called the Unhappy.

It is right, but I had someone else in mind. Let's say that those twelve deaths include the speaker's own.
You're cĺose with Gorlim, though.
