Just a guess: Orodruin or Udûn

Firefoot
11-24-2005, 01:22 PM
Not even close.

Telchar
11-24-2005, 04:27 PM
If I stand in Edoras facing west as the windows in Bree, and walked backwards 250 miles (eastward) I would be in the northern part of Nindalf - the closest city on af River is VERY far away... ???

Firefoot
11-24-2005, 04:37 PM
Yes, you're on the right track.

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-24-2005, 04:58 PM
This is real hard.

The thing that pussels me is that you turn left until you are on the same line as the dark wood. I assumed this was Mirkwood (Murky Wood), but could it be Fangor who is this dark wood.

My next problem is that I lack good maps and cant see all the citys and bridges therefor I can only guess.

It could be Gladden Fields , with a bit of wishfull thinking.

Gothmog
11-24-2005, 05:00 PM
Guessing here... Lonely Mountain or somewhere around there? Wild guess as I have no idea of what city or bridge that is...

EDIT: Cross posted with Rune. Dark Wood could very well be Fangorn. I should know, I posted a question about an old name for Fangorn in Call My Bluff recently. The name was Tauremornaloma, or Tauremorna. Taur=wood/forest, mor=dark. How could I not think of that??? And yes, a lack of good maps is a problem for me too.
Could Dol Guldur be right?

Firefoot
11-24-2005, 06:14 PM
Wrong on all counts. And the Dark Wood isn't Fangorn or Mirkwood. :p

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-24-2005, 06:26 PM
ok, if some of my resoning was right, then the destination could be Rivendell.

(hey didn't some of the windows face north ?)

Firefoot
11-24-2005, 06:35 PM
Nope. The only source I found was of windows facing west, so you'll have to go with that...

Telchar
11-25-2005, 03:07 AM
We need to work together on this one guys...

The dark wood no doubt is Dimholt -> dark wood

But I cant figure out what city on a river were talking about? much less which bridge we're talking about? can anyone help?

NightKnight
11-25-2005, 07:26 AM
I believe the city is Osgiliath, since I think that's the closest city on a river from the Dead Marshes (where I ended up 250 miles from Edoras). A bridge upstream on the Anduin? Are there even any?

Firefoot
11-25-2005, 07:35 AM
NK's on the right track.

Telchar

The only place Anduin was ever bridged was IN OSGILIATH... I dont think its Osgilliath, but Im not sure...

NightKnight
11-25-2005, 09:49 AM
Well, the bridge is supposed to be upstream from Osgiliath. Cair Andros perhaps?

Firefoot
11-25-2005, 09:54 AM
Nope. There actually was a bridge there at one point.

Gothmog
11-25-2005, 10:34 AM
The bridge at the Old Ford south of Carrock! Where the Old Forest Road crosses Anduin. From there to Rivendell? The High Pass? I'm lost...

Telchar
11-26-2005, 08:59 AM
well if you come from the south and turn left at the Old Ford :o ... until you're on a north/south line with Dimholt, then you're more or less in Rivendell - from there you go 150 miles to the northeast and end up where R Rimdath og The Rushdown meets the Anduin....?

Firefoot
11-26-2005, 09:10 AM
You all haven't found the right Dark Wood yet. Dark Wood is what its name actually means.

Gothmog
11-26-2005, 10:10 AM
You all haven't found the right Dark Wood yet. Dark Wood is what its name actually means. Exactly like Dimholt, the old word for Fangorn and Mirkwood then ;)

Rune Son of Bjarne
11-26-2005, 10:54 AM
The Dark Wood = Dimholt

But I still dont have any maps so it will be a guess yet again.

Carrock ?

Telchar
11-27-2005, 06:00 AM
Maybe Menegroth?

Firefoot
11-30-2005, 08:22 PM
None of those. The Dark Wood isn't Dimholt... it's a lot further north than that. But it's south of the Old Forest.

Telchar
12-01-2005, 03:16 AM
OK...

If we assume... NEVER ASSUME... still if we assume that we have the right city, river and bridge... We travel West / left - from the Old Ford on Anduin All the past Rivendell, Amon Sûl and most of the Shire. Then we stop when we're on a North/South line with Eryn Vorn "The black Wood". From there we turn towards the Northeast and travel another 150 miles until we get our feet weet in Lake Evendim ;) .... is that it?

Firefoot
12-01-2005, 06:21 AM
That's correct - your turn. :)

Telchar
12-01-2005, 06:37 AM
This one, much inspired by Firefoot, souldn’t be too easy...

You stand on “the head of black magic” and travel in a true line toward the “golden-brown head”. When you reach the third river on you path you find a boat and sail down stream until you sense that straight south of you, is the place where the young warrior of the north swore a great oath. From there you turn straight Eastward untill you’re north of the place that the Gorgûn filth name Lugbúrz. Feeling the dread of that place you travel north. You reach yet another river which you follow upstream untill you’re straight south of the last home of the last dragon. Now being weary of your long travels, you feel the call of the Sea, and you travel West until you reach it. Name the water before you, and tell me how you got there... ;)

Lindolirian
12-01-2005, 02:42 PM
I start at Dol Guldur, heading in the direction of Dol Baran and cross the Anduin, Limight, and Ondlo. I sail down the Ondlo until I am directly north of the spot in Firien Wood where Eorl swore his Oath to Cirion. Going straight east I end up in Ered Lithui where I am north of Barad-dur. From there I travel north to the River Running which I take upstream to the Long Lake, south of the former home of Smaug. After all this travelling, I decide to just shoot straight west until I end up in Forlindon looking towards Tol Morwen on the Great Sea.

Telchar
12-01-2005, 04:00 PM
Impressive  Myself, I ended up looking at the Gulf of Lhûn - The thread is yours

Lindolirian
12-01-2005, 04:50 PM
The weary traveller of the Geography Grilling thread leaves the Gulf of Lune to begin his next journey this time in Phurunargian and goes 200 miles in the direction of the Green Hills. From here he takes the nearest river downstream to where it is joined by another. At this point he turns directly north until he meets another river which he takes upstream to its source. After all the wandering he is tired and seeks shelter... what is the nearest populated settlement he could go to?

Telchar
12-02-2005, 02:30 AM
Nice question ... but:
The Green Hills of the Shire or The Green Hills of Pinnath Gelin? :)

Lindolirian
12-02-2005, 09:26 PM
That's what you're supposed to figure out. ;)

Lindolirian
12-11-2005, 04:36 PM
Well if it's gonna take you guys this long, then I'll give you at least that: It's the Green Hills of Pinnath Gelin.

Telchar
12-12-2005, 03:25 AM
Ahh well, I'll have a try:

From Moria in a south / southwest direction 200 miles, then I look for a river. The closest I can find is the Entwash close to its scource. I travel down stream untill the Entwash joins with Snowbourn. From there I travel north by the grassy plains of the Eastfold til I meet the Limlight which I follow upstream til is scouce in northern Fangorn. The closest populatet shelter is Caras Caladhon... so thats where I take shelter...

Lindolirian
12-12-2005, 10:34 AM
Hmmm well, maybe one of our measurements is off... Let's say the initial run down the Misty Mts is 215 miles, just to make it a bit more accurate.

Telchar
12-22-2005, 04:37 AM
From Moria in a south / southwest direction 215 miles, then I look for a river. The closest I can find is Isen close to its scource. I travel down stream untill the Isen is joined by the River Adorn. From there I travel north....

This where trouble comes. According to different maps the place where the Isen is joined by R. Adorn is off balance.
On one map has the point so far eastward that a northward line reaches the River Glanduin that passes uninhabited Ost-en-Edhil and has is scource close to Moria, which has almost always been populated - so thats one possible answer.
On other maps the point is so far westward that a northward line reaches the River Gwatlhó. The scource of Gwatlhó is where the River Bruinen met the River Mitheithel. I cant find any populated dwellings close by...
The third quess is that some see the Gwathló and the Mitheithel as one river - the scource of the Mitheithel is in the Misty Mountains close to the Ettenmoors - I guess the closest populated dwelling is the Eagles Eyries - that my last guess ...

Lindolirian
12-22-2005, 02:43 PM
Hahaha! Well you followed my directions perfectly, but I had overlooked the fact that Eagles are people too! I had said Rivendell but yes, the eyries are closer, so you have it!

Telchar
12-23-2005, 05:57 AM
Path 1: You are on Himring and walk i a straight line to Eglarest
Path 2: From there you walk straight north until you come to Annon-in-Gelydh
Path 3: From Annon-in-Gelydh you walk towards Gabilgathol, but you stop when you cross Path 1 - what are you standing on???

Rune Son of Bjarne
12-23-2005, 06:08 AM
according to my map I would stand on a crossing/bridge/whatever of the river Esgalduin called Lant Laur.

Telchar
12-23-2005, 06:24 AM
Beautiful - Iant Iaur simply means "Bridge Old" literally...

Rune Son of Bjarne
01-24-2006, 07:35 AM
Sorry about that.

This will just be simple question to get us startet again.

Name the rivers of Doriath

Lindolirian
01-24-2006, 11:36 PM
Teiglin, Sirion, Mindeb, Esgalduin, Aros, and Celon.

Rune Son of Bjarne
01-25-2006, 10:21 AM
Sure, your turn.

Lindolirian

Name all of the rivers (in the north west of Middle Earth, Third Age) that have a color in the name.

Firefoot
01-31-2006, 05:50 PM
Gwathlo (gray)
Brandywine (brown, I think)
Lhun (blue)
Carnen (red)
Morthond (black)
Greylin (duh)

Lindolirian
01-31-2006, 10:28 PM
Yeah I think that just about covers it. Good work!

Firefoot

Name, in order, all the hills/mountain ranges that Frodo crossed on his journey between its start in the Shire and its "end" in Mordor.

Tuor of Gondolin
04-25-2006, 10:48 AM
How about:

The Barrowdowns
The Weather Hills
The Trollshaws
The Misty Mountains
The Emyn Muil
Ered Duath
Orodruin?

Firefoot
04-25-2006, 02:24 PM
It's Ephel Duath, not Ered Duath, but otherwise fine. Go ahead.

Tuor of Gondolin
04-26-2006, 11:20 AM
Okay. Name, in order, the various significant
water features that Tuor encountered/
traveled on throughout his life.

Goldberry101
05-03-2006, 05:18 PM
This is probably wrong, and missing a lot, but here goes...

Cirith Nin-niach
Pools of Ivrin
Sirion
Narog
Bay of Balar
Belegaer

I wasn't sure if a couple counted, or if to put them on twice if he traveled on them twice.

Tuor of Gondolin
05-04-2006, 06:31 AM
Hmm. A good job by Goldberry 101 .
. I think at least two bodies, one mentioned (Sirion),
should be cited twice. Remember, "body of water" isn't limited by
size. So I suppose at least nine names (at least two repeats)
should be in a longer list. (I'm not counting, although perhaps
they should be, the fountains of Gondolin---since they're
artificial).

Cirith Nin-niach
Pools of Ivrin
Sirion
Narog
Bay of Balar
Belegaer

Goldberry101
05-06-2006, 07:48 AM
How's this? Some are probably wrong...

Lake Mithrim
Cirith Nin-Niach
Belegaer?
Pools of Ivrin
Sirion
Narog
Sirion?
Bay of Balar
Belegaer

Tuor in Gondolin
05-08-2006, 07:38 AM
That's the major ones. I think there could be four more
water features (three of them rivers), although the
rivers are just passed briefly. Your work is good enough,
but if you care try for the others, if not I'll list them.

1.Lake Mithrim
2.Cirith Ninniiach
3.
4.Belegaer
5.Pools of Ivrin
6.
7.
8.
9.Sirion
10.Narog
11.Sirion
12.Bay of Balar
13.Belegaer

Goldberry101
05-08-2006, 05:59 PM
Here's another try...not sure on them though

1.Lake Mithrim
2.Cirith Ninniiach
3.Definately not sure...perhaps the Linewen?
4.Belegaer
5.Pools of Ivrin
6.Narog (is very close to Pools of Ivrin...maybe encountered?)
7.Teiglin
8.Malduin
9.Sirion
10.Narog
11.Sirion
12.Bay of Balar
13.Belegaer

Tuor of Gondolin
05-09-2006, 05:51 AM
Good work, Goldberry101 .
The three rivers (Narog, Teiglin, and
Malduin) are mentioned in passing in UT.
For number three I was thinking of the Firth
of Drengist. I don't know that there's definite
indications of Tuor seeing the Linaewen.
Your turn.

1.Lake Mithrim
2.Cirith Ninniiach
3.(Firth of Drengist)
4.Belegaer
5.Pools of Ivrin
6.Narog
7.Teiglin
8.Malduin
9.Sirion
10.Narog
11.Sirion
12.Bay of Balar
13.Belegaer

Goldberry101
05-10-2006, 04:58 PM
I don't know any. Someone else can go if they want to. If no one goes within a day or two, then I'll think of one.

Goldberry101
05-15-2006, 05:53 PM
Won't someone go? I am afraid if I ask one I would get the answer wrong.

Hey we all make mistakes sometimes, I my self have made several and when I have to keep track of several quizes, I often get very confused.

Ok I will ask an easy one just to get us going!

which two rivers met at the Meres of Twilight ?

Rune: Hello Thread, how have you been?

The Thread: I have been feeling just awful, I thought everybody had forgotten about me.

Rune: I didn't and now I found you

The Thread: About time. . .

Anyways it seems that after almost two years it is now time for a new question.

Name two tributarys of the river Teiglin

Iaurhirwen

The River Teiglin has 3 tributaries:

Glithui
Malduin
Celebros
