ITs simply like Who Am I, except yo udescribe Downers, my apologies if there is already a thread like this, i have not located it

I'll start it off with an easy one

I can be seen glowing an eery green, maybe as a penguin, Who am I?

AbercrombieOfRohan
06-05-2005, 10:22 AM
It's Shelob! Actually is the B-W, but he's absent... I actually have no idea why that's important....

Gil-Galad
06-05-2005, 10:22 AM
Aye its the B-W, your turn!

Gil-Galad
07-27-2005, 07:30 AM

the guy who be short
07-27-2005, 09:15 AM
Yay!

My gender often puzzles newcomers. I'm bonkers.

Any more and I'd be giving it away...

Kitanna
07-27-2005, 09:17 AM
Is it mormegil?

the guy who be short
07-27-2005, 09:20 AM
Nope! Though I'll be sure to tell him you think he's bonkers. ;)

The Saucepan Man
07-27-2005, 09:23 AM
Feanor of the Peredhil
would appear to fit the bill.

the guy who be short
07-27-2005, 09:41 AM
Correct! Over to you, PanMan.

The Saucepan Man
07-27-2005, 09:45 AM
Cheers TGWBS. :)

I am the River-Woman's granddaughter.

Kitanna
07-27-2005, 10:06 AM
Bęthberry?

The Saucepan Man
07-27-2005, 10:18 AM
Quite so. Please continue. :)

Kitanna
07-27-2005, 10:41 AM
I am a Marshal with an appreciation for the warg.

Amanaduial the archer
07-27-2005, 10:43 AM
Eomer of the Rohirrim?

Kitanna
07-27-2005, 11:07 AM
Aye, that it is, Amanaduil.

Amanaduial the archer
07-27-2005, 11:43 AM
Alrighty then...

Think...fiery elf meets the little people.

Alcarillo
07-27-2005, 03:57 PM
Feanor of the Peredhil?

Amanaduial the archer
07-27-2005, 04:31 PM
Who else - your turn, Alcarillo. :)

Alcarillo
07-27-2005, 04:58 PM
I've got one: illegal resident of the House of Ransom.

Amanaduial the archer
07-27-2005, 05:06 PM
Oh lordy, out comes my fundamentally sketchy knowledge of all things pre-Third Age.... Mormegil?

Gil-Galad
07-27-2005, 05:23 PM
Squatter of Amon Rudh? haven't heard from him in awhile...

Alcarillo
07-27-2005, 05:23 PM
Nope. Here's a hint: there's an of in his/her name.

Alcarillo
07-27-2005, 05:25 PM
Yes, Gil-Galad, your turn.

Gil-Galad
07-27-2005, 05:27 PM
A cherpy little fellow, well not really little, more big, more of an Oxymoron

Alcarillo
07-27-2005, 06:03 PM
Littlemanpoet?

The Saucepan Man
07-27-2005, 07:34 PM
That'll be The Perky Ent, I believe.

Gil-Galad
07-28-2005, 07:22 AM
Mr. Man is correct, it is indeed the OxyMoron of the Downs, The Perky Ent

The Saucepan Man
07-28-2005, 10:29 AM
Thank you G-G. :)

Next up:

Drambui makes me confused :D

HerenIstarion
07-28-2005, 10:47 AM
Eomer of the Rohirrim, on account of being resident of Aberdeen, Scotland?

The Saucepan Man
07-28-2005, 11:07 AM
Nay, nay and thrice nay.

(That's not a clue).

solarisa
07-28-2005, 11:43 AM
i know...or do i?
gee i see that pinguin avatared dude alot...arr cant remember his name! hes a gost of cardolan, i think!

Bęthberry
07-28-2005, 11:55 AM
Hey there Mr. SaucepanMan, are you taking us along for a ride?

I humbly submit a wild guess, someone who is both sweet and intoxicating but with a bit of a bite, like Drambuie: our very own Lush.

Mithalwen
07-28-2005, 11:55 AM
Anagram of Drambui +me?

Formendacil
07-28-2005, 12:47 PM
Drambui makes me confused :D

D R A M B U I = R I M B A U D

Rimbaud?

The Saucepan Man
07-28-2005, 05:34 PM
Rimbaud?Rimbaud it is. Congratulations master Formendacil. It's your turn. :)

Formendacil
08-01-2005, 10:38 PM
But it was not, in fact, caused by a delinquent mind unable to think up a clue. So here we go:

Though this half-elven user goes by two names, it is, in fact, one person.

Mithalwen
08-02-2005, 11:27 AM
Nilp?

the guy who be short
08-02-2005, 11:57 AM
Feanor of the Peredhil comes to mind as being Half-Elven, though She only has the one name...

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-02-2005, 12:09 PM
Is it Helen? Or mark12_30?

*giggles in excitement at being in the Quiz Room*

Estelyn Telcontar
08-02-2005, 12:19 PM
It's Elladan and Elrohir - twins in Tolkien's world, but united in one member on the Downs.

Formendacil
08-02-2005, 12:22 PM
Estelyn is correct. Over to you, Ms. Telcontar.

Estelyn Telcontar
08-03-2005, 12:39 AM
I frequently cause spelling problems, though I rarely make mistakes of that kind myself. Who am I?

HerenIstarion
08-03-2005, 12:52 AM
Marileangorifurnimaluim?

Lhunardawen
08-03-2005, 01:05 AM
Through the bite of that nasty bug called egocentricism I am inclined to say Lhunardawen, but I'll settle for Orominuialwen instead. ;)

Estelyn Telcontar
08-03-2005, 01:15 AM
Nope, neither answer is correct - look around, you'll find it!

Lhunardawen
08-03-2005, 01:21 AM
Fordhim Hedgethistle?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-03-2005, 01:28 AM
If you mean Fordim Hedgethistle , you're right, Lhuna! (Not everyone has that extra "h" in their screen name! :p ) As he was used in the title of a thread exploring the misspellings of nicks, he's the one I thought of.

Lhunardawen
08-03-2005, 01:48 AM
:D Thanks, Esty.

For lack of anything better to ask...

You swoon over the wrong guy...it should be me!

Firefoot
08-03-2005, 05:54 AM
That sounds like Gil-Galad.

Feanor of the Peredhil
08-03-2005, 07:06 AM
I dunno, Fire-non-Footie... the word swoon brings to mind Swashbuckling Eomer and his fan club. Or even tp.

mark12_30
08-03-2005, 07:13 AM
Roggie of Morgoth. (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=358452&postcount=54)

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-03-2005, 07:20 AM
You beat me to it Helen. Should we keep score for this game?

the guy who be short
08-03-2005, 09:29 AM
Sounds like the phantom to me. (Actually, it sounds a bit more like Eomer, but Fea said that already).

Lhunardawen
08-03-2005, 11:03 PM
Not Gil-galad, nor Eomer, nor Roggie (I have forgotten about that though, Helen! :D) , nor the phantom. Need a hint? May be a book character. CbCers should get this. ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund
08-05-2005, 09:59 PM

HerenIstarion, perchance?

Nilpaurion Felagund
08-05-2005, 11:23 PM
Oh, who am I kidding. 'tis he.

Your thread, :)

Formendacil
08-05-2005, 11:32 PM
Your thread, :)

That means I have to come up with something, right?

Lemme think...

This Brand Name may be found at the Gap of Rohan...

AbercrombieOfRohan.

Formendacil
08-05-2005, 11:57 PM
AbercrombieOfRohan.

Quite right.

Your serve, Master(s) Felagund.

Nilpaurion Felagund
08-07-2005, 02:57 AM
If Bombadil was singing "glory", this is how it would come out.

Feanor of the Peredhil
08-07-2005, 07:42 AM
Tom Bombariffic? Perhaps?

Orominuialwen
08-07-2005, 02:36 PM
Could it be GlingleglingleglingleFairy (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/member.php?u=1401)? Unlikely, but worth a try...

Nilpaurion Felagund
08-07-2005, 08:33 PM
I'm looking for a more recent Downer.

Gil-Galad
08-08-2005, 12:27 PM
Lily Bombadil?

The Saucepan Man
08-08-2005, 05:57 PM
Alcarillo?

... to rhyme with ring-a-ding-dillo. :D

(No idea what it has to do with "glory" though.)

Nilpaurion Felagund
08-08-2005, 07:49 PM
Alcar (Quenya) = glory.

Your turn. :)

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-09-2005, 08:21 AM
I know I'm unfamiliar with the Quiz room but I must say these clues are fantastical. Especially that last one, Nilp. :)

The Saucepan Man
08-09-2005, 10:11 AM
Your turn.I know.

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-10-2005, 07:35 AM
"I know"? Hmm.....must be the phantom. :p ;)

The Saucepan Man
08-10-2005, 07:49 AM
Nope.

the guy who be short
08-10-2005, 07:50 AM
Ah, that was a clue? I thought he was just being odd...

The Barrow Wight?

The Saucepan Man
08-10-2005, 07:52 AM
Niet.

HerenIstarion
08-10-2005, 07:53 AM

The thread is yours, HI. :)

HerenIstarion

You are :) The floor is yours :D

Morsul the Dark
08-10-2005, 08:17 AM
Let me see....

ok here's one I like

"I make athletes foot seem good, if you don't know who i am."

I'm sure someone can guess it

Amanaduial the archer
08-10-2005, 09:04 AM
Firefoot?

Morsul the Dark
08-10-2005, 09:05 AM
yes indeedy

Amanaduial the archer
08-10-2005, 09:17 AM
Nice clue ;)

Ok, a clue... How about a quote from Ephesians 16...

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Morsul the Dark
08-10-2005, 09:22 AM
Gil-Galad...

if not him then I must search some more

Feanor of the Peredhil
08-10-2005, 09:29 AM
Either that or we're talking about mark.

Amanaduial the archer
08-10-2005, 09:29 AM
A little puzzled about both guesses... Nope, not Gil-Galad or Mark12_30.

Morsul the Dark
08-10-2005, 09:37 AM
Eowyn Skywalker

Gil-galad you know famous for shining..oh that was his shield i was way off

Eowyn because she is called dernhelm helmet clue
spirited sword lightsaber

the rest is just part of the quote i guess

Estelyn Telcontar
08-10-2005, 09:37 AM
Raefindel?

Feanor of the Peredhil
08-10-2005, 09:38 AM
Ephesians 16 -> mark12_30

Both biblical references.

Amanaduial the archer
08-13-2005, 01:19 PM
Ah, I understand - good guess then, Feanor. But no, Estelyn gets it - Raefindel is the correct answer. Her personal title is 'Sword of the Spirit', and her signature certainly was for some time that quote - possibly still is, I haven't checked...

Your turn, Estelyn :)

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-22-2005, 08:22 AM
*pokes Estelyn with pointed stick*

Estelyn Telcontar
08-22-2005, 09:37 AM
Oops, sorry! I didn't realize that I'd gotten the answer here, as I was away for over a week. I will post a new one very soon...

Edit: Here it is:

If I were a character in The Wind in the Willows, my name would be 'Mole'.

Boromir88
08-22-2005, 10:46 AM
Perhaps...

Azaelia of Willowbottom?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-22-2005, 10:50 AM
nope - sorry!

The Saucepan Man
08-22-2005, 10:57 AM
HerenIstarion - for his spring cleaning of threads? :D

HerenIstarion
08-22-2005, 10:57 AM
Mole is the faithful one, if my memory ain't playing tricks on me. May it be Samwise (http://69.51.5.41/member.php?u=238), Faithful Spirit?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2005, 12:56 AM
"spring cleaning", "faithful" - nice thoughts, but not what I'm looking for. Think location...

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-23-2005, 05:16 AM
Lalwendë springs to mind. Maybe it's just the Bilbo avatar and the countryside connection.

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2005, 05:59 AM
Nope - as I said above, think home location and find an appropriate nick...

Mithalwen
08-23-2005, 06:09 AM
As in "I am a mole and I live in a hole"?
Burrahobbit

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2005, 06:15 AM
You're getting closer, Mithalwen, but not quite there yet...

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-23-2005, 08:38 AM
Hmmm..... Lyta_Underhill?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2005, 10:13 AM
Very close... (but Mole is not female)

Mithalwen
08-23-2005, 10:15 AM
Mr Underhill then?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2005, 10:20 AM
Mister, to be precise, but yes - you have it, Mithalwen!

Mithalwen
08-23-2005, 10:27 AM
Ooo thanks .. Easy one now....
Hero followed by Misses Paterson & Dickson-Wright

The Saucepan Man
08-23-2005, 11:09 AM
Hero = Boromir

Misses Paterson & Dickson-Wright = Two Fat Ladies, 88 in bingo terms.

Hence, Boromir88. :D

Mithalwen
08-25-2005, 09:34 AM
Well I did say it was easy.... though I never pictured you as a bingo fan..... :p more high stakes poker....

The Saucepan Man
08-25-2005, 09:58 AM
though I never pictured you as a bingo fan...Never played the game in my life. Just one of those useless pieces of trivia clogging up my brain (and thereby edging out things that may actually be of some use). As for Poker, nah - my risk profile is far too conservative. I'll stretch to Pontoon with matches as the stakes ... ;)

This one should be easy for anyone who has been following a certain thread:

I am Potassio.

Meneltarmacil
08-25-2005, 11:20 AM
THE Ka, of course.

The Saucepan Man
08-25-2005, 11:44 AM
Quite so. Your go. :)

Maybe Eomer of the Rohirrim? Given how well he played his role as a Werewolf...

Meneltarmacil
08-25-2005, 12:21 PM
Yes, Enca, that was it.

Encaitare
08-25-2005, 01:17 PM

Child of the 7th Age? (Easy for those familiar with the Quiz Room, maybe. :p )

Encaitare
08-25-2005, 02:33 PM
But of course. :)

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-26-2005, 05:35 AM
My first clue in the Quiz Room! :)

One vowel stands between me and more wings than a Balrog can shake a stick at.

Durelin
08-26-2005, 08:47 AM
I feel like the answer I came up with is too *easy* to be correct, but, here goes...

TomBrady12?

I wouldn't dare shake a stick at 12 wings... *shrugs*

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-26-2005, 09:17 AM
You're thinking along entirely wrong lines. Sorry! :p

Durelin
08-26-2005, 09:18 AM
Thought that was too...well, dumb. :p

The Saucepan Man
08-26-2005, 09:28 AM
Wilwarin538?

1076 butterfly wings ...?

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-26-2005, 09:31 AM
Hmm. Slightly better, but still quite far off. There's no number in the name; it's entirely a word thing. This Downer doesn't really post too much.

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-31-2005, 11:21 AM
Let's make it easy then.

Change one vowel in this name, and you get a plural of winged beings.

Feanor of the Peredhil
08-31-2005, 11:28 AM
I don't suppose we have a Belrog anywhere.... :p

Morsul the Dark
08-31-2005, 11:34 AM
well...balrogman

you could change the a to an e to make balrogmen :D

I don't think its that but its worth a shot

wilwarin538
08-31-2005, 11:47 AM
Well we have a Ravenna, if you change the last a to an s you get Ravenns, its almost ravens just with an extra n. :D  ;)

Eomer of the Rohirrim
08-31-2005, 01:27 PM
Good ideas! However, 'Ravenns' is not a word. And Balrogs don't have wings. :p

Bęthberry
08-31-2005, 01:40 PM
With the addition of one letter, davem's personal title sprouts wings (maybe?) but it isn't as if (NB,not 'like') he rarely posts. :p ;)

Though it's not really relevant, it's the opposite of yours. :)

Feanor of the Peredhil

Lyta_Underhill

I am said to be a southern cross. Wild offhand guess, completely impulsive: Lyra, as in Lyra Greenleaf? (Is the southern cross in constellation of Lyra or is my memory really faulty?)

The Saucepan Man
09-09-2005, 04:14 PM
No. Neither of those.

Feanor of the Peredhil
09-09-2005, 04:31 PM
I am said to be a southern cross.

All I can think of is Firefoot. Since the southern cross used to be (still is?) considered part of Centaurus and the phantom accused Fire-non-Footie of being a centaur in his imaginings...

The Saucepan Man
09-09-2005, 04:48 PM
No.

It's cryptic.

the guy who be short
09-10-2005, 10:09 AM
No fair, SpM - Cryptic Clues belong in... er, Cryptic Clues. :D

The only thing I can think of is that Crucifix thing in Brazil somewhere (hooray for my wonderful geographical and memory skills!). It's a cross, it's in the South. Do we have anybody named after it...?

Formendacil
09-10-2005, 11:18 AM
It's cryptic. :)

A cryptic Southern Cross...

Well, I've never played Cryptic Clues, so I'm probably going in totally the wrong direction, but perhaps something I say will spark the imagination of a more knowledgeable 'Downer.

If it is something a'cross' from the "south", then it ought to have to do with the "north", in which case we need to find a 'Downer who's associated with the north...

Or else, it maybe some sort of southern cross-breed. Hmm. Yes, that seems a bit more likely...

So, the question is, do we have any australian hybrids lurking around the forum???

- Not looking for a reply from Mr. S P Man, just throwing out ideas for dead-ended BDers.

It may be worth looking at the cryptic clue examples on the Cryptic Clue thread ...

Amanaduial the archer

I am! It's not helping! As LePetitChoux said on that same thread - this is what frustration feels like! :) I don't suppose it's Bethberry, for her Personal Title....? Ah well, worth a try...

Ok...

I am said to be a southern cross.

So I'm sitting here like an idiot staring at the members list and randomly trying to make names sound like 'southern cross', with some interesting results in trying to fit the whole phrase into about one syllable. Not having much more success with the anagram line either... I would guess it is a sound-alike, being as it is 'I am said to be', but I could be entirely wrong; besides, I can't think of anything that a 'southern cross' could possibly be. Giving off light = glowing = Gloin. Southern cross = ?!

I'm nowhere near, am I?

I would agree with Perky, that cryptic clues belong, indeed, in Cryptic Clues. However, I am intrigued - and also now really rather frustrated! ;)

I have 2 Downers in mind . . .

The simple:

Esty ----- S-t - (S-outhern + cross = t)

OR

The more complicated:

Essex ----- ‘es’ (‘to be a’ in Spanish) + ‘s’ (Southern) + ‘ex’ = x (cross)

----

I'm ready - crush me with a resounding 'NO'!

The more complicated:

Essex ----- ‘es’ (‘to be a’ in Spanish) + ‘s’ (Southern) + ‘ex’ = x (cross)Actually, it's less complicated than that.

Southern cross = SX which, when said, sounds like Essex.

I have decided that this is a hideous clue and to salve my conscience I will give you a couple of clues.

1, It refers to a downers personal title

2, if you translate Ave first from Latin then from Spanish you will have most of the context of the original source of the PT

If that isn't enough I will give you a very google-able clue but see how you do with those....

Oooooh. Gotcha. Lalaith.

Mithalwen
10-09-2005, 01:14 PM
Thank goodness for that!

Lalaith's Personal Title is "Blithe Spirit" . To explain the second clue first. Blithe Spirit is the title of a play by Noel Coward featuring a medium called Madam Arcati. However the phrase originally comes from the first line of a Poem called "Ode to a Sky Lark" by P.B.Shelley

"Hail to thee Blithe Spirit! Bird thou never wert,"

So

Ave! You were not singing 'in excelsis'.

Ave is Hail in latin and Bird in Spanish. Singing in Excelsis (on high) is what Skylarks are known for......

A lovely lass with a fond attachment to the lily of the valley.Okay. I know when a hint is in store. It's a multi-part clue. Figure out the last part and then figure out the result of it.

Sorry, just thought I'd throw that in, it seemed appropriate at Fea's allusions to her cheek and to lilly of the valley - even if I really am not sure about what she means...:)

Ok, as for my guess...again, I would have said Sophia the Thunder Mistress, although I admit that I am puzzled by your apparent 'cheekiness'. Is it something to do with La Langue des Fleurs at all?

Not Tig. Aman's closer, what with her May-flower.

Amanaduial the archer
10-19-2005, 01:11 PM
May-flower...maybe this is a bit far-fetched and I'm picking up the wrong thing entirely here, but would that be a hint at the Mayflower, the ship that took the Pilgrim fathers from England to Massachussets in the early 17th century? If so, then maybe Nuranar? She wrote rather eloquently on it as a subject, and does have a particular fondness for American history...(I would say Gurthang but, well, he ain't a she...)

Anywhere close, at all? I'm running dry on any ideas at all, and this is the thought that struck. Otherwise, if I'm near (which I doubt - far fetched would be a euphemism), maybe...Bethberry? I don't know, I'm hopeless! A downer from Massachussets?

Feanor of the Peredhil
