I have only been at my new job for a month and I am not sure what decorum dictates, is it too soon to use the office xeroxing machine for PT drawings?Pfffft, the sooner you accidentally leave an inexplicably weird drawing in the workplace scanner, the sooner you become a household name. :p

At my old job I managed that by telling stories about getting urinated on by wildlife...

Sad that I didn't get a chance to join, but excited to see what craziness emerges after having two years to build up since the last game! I certainly wouldn't be opposed to playing another one right after, if someone else wants to mod! :D

I think this round went really fast because a lot of people (including a few with the drawing round  ) replied quite immediately, and I was using the read receipts and the few people who hadn't even read their pm's in 2-3 days I managed to contact through other ways and after that they were very fast about it too. And it helped me as a mod that I was able to check the situation and send the paper telephone on if needs be several times per day usually. So yeah, everyone can pat themselves on the back!

That being said, I just woke up and I see Form sent me the last sentence overnight. Stay tuned, the paper telephone will be here in an hour or two! :smokin:

One day, Thinlómien was walking in the Barrow-Downs, singing a well-known tune as she went:

From the Gate of Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls.

"I never realised how little sense that line makes," Kath muttered when she heard the song through her window. "I'm gonna illustrate why."

https://i.imgur.com/X8RlEGp.jpg

A sudden gust of wind snatched the drawing from her hands, and it landed on Pitchwife's yard. "Hmm," he said. "Looks like

Shadowfax contemplates going a-boating come autumn.

"Really?" asked TheGreatElvenWarrior over the fence that separated their yards. "No, that's not it. That would look like this:"

https://i.imgur.com/n1J1p0n.jpg

As a prank, they decided to drop the drawing in A Little Green's little green mailbox. She thought what it was about was:

Tired of galloping, Shadowfax dreams of an alternative means of transport.

Her thought was picked up by Oddwen's roaming psychic abilities (yes, the abilities were roaming, don't question me) that visualised it as follows:

Legate of Amon Lanc had a peek inside her head and disapproved. He muttered:

It is easy to feel like you're free and the hero of all Middle-Earth when it's your animal companion who has to do all the hard work.

satansaloser2005 thought this was such a profound thought that she decided to illustrate it for posterity:

https://i.imgur.com/G6N0Y0V.jpg

A few centuries later, her drawing was in a museum. The curator, Rune Son of Bjarne, claimed that the piece portrays the scene from The Lay of Leithian where:

Unfortunately the only one to answer Luthien's call for help was a rodent armed to the teeth, and so she remained in a state of mild discomfort.

Sadly, the local newspaper got the rights to publish the citation but not the artwork, so their in house illustrator Nogrod had to improvise:

https://i.imgur.com/3pclAOA.jpg

Barandiun was reading the newspaper next morning. Or more like, looking at the pictures, as "reading is for idiots who don't understand pictures". They thought what they saw was:

Person in a dress and long hair sits at a low tree in a discussion with a rodent warrior.

They wrote (ironically, they had nothing against writing) the thought in their diary, which was later that night taken with all their other property when Huinesoron burgled their house. Struck by the poetic quote, the burglar doodled this in their sketchbook:

Galadriel55 was running an art class for burglars. She was the mesmerised by the piece that portrayed - as she would tell everyone who would listen - the principle that

As a rule the Rohirrim did not consort with fell creatures, but the princess Eowyn was wont to go off alone to study the fiendish and warlike sprites known as the holbytla.

The local grocer Formendacil had heard this a million times already. As a protest, he put this sign on his counter, hoping to silence the chatty customer the next time she'd come around:

https://i.imgur.com/DgByjv9.jpg

Obviously, this was the talk in the neighbourhood for quite a while, as wights are almost as bad gossipmongers as hobbits are. Urwen even called her non-wighty cousin just to tell about the sign that said:

An overlord decided that there would be no ponies or books allowed.

Wights are immortal. Therefore, Lommy was still around, now working for the wight secret service. She intercepted the dubious phone call, and made notes in hieroglyphs that looked like this:

https://i.imgur.com/OJFS2s6.jpg

"Bad agent!" exclaimed her boss Kath. "You just scribbled your notes on top of an authentic William Blake painting! What does that even say?

Saruman of many colours sat ringed by flame, berating the naked book-bearer. "I've already got a book, fool. Now get on your horse and leave!"

Their coworker Pitchwife heard the exchange, and he couldn't shake the mental image, so he went home and drew this:

Thinlómien

Even though a few hundred years had passed, TGEW was still nosy about her neighbour's affairs. She went for coffee with a friend, and told her how her weird neighbour was drawing a picture where

Saruman of Many Colours directs his naked hobbit slave to show him the book of horses.

Her friend, Greenie, didn't believe the story. So she sneaked into her friend's neighbour's backyard, and snapped a picture of what was going on inside the house:

https://i.imgur.com/EP9TWno.jpg

Scandalised herself, she sold the picture to the local newspaper. The editor in chief, the psychic Oddwen, published it with the caption:

As he is borne away in chains to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, Tiny David casts one last gaze upon his favorite possession, the Tan Book of Horsemarch.

Meanwhile on the other side of the 'downs, there was a very bored wight named Legate who was making a collage of newspaper clippings. This caption, he thought, went magnificently with a picture he may or may not have made himself in the long centuries of his wightish life:

https://i.imgur.com/3WuNGCt.jpg

Sally, who still thought he was a very profound thinker even though she had had a few centuries more to observe him, bought the collage from him, cut out this particular piece and framed it on her wall. She liked to tell her guests it depicted a scene where

The ring wraiths carry a well-articulated statue to their lair.

"That's not well-articulated!" protested Rune when he visited, taking a pen and scribbling on a napkin. "This would be well-articulated!"

https://i.imgur.com/PbGSMa2.jpg

Thinlómien
05-14-2020, 05:05 AM
Since the hostess was a thrifty wight, the same napkin was later used by another visitor, Nogrod. He was very puzzled why his napkin should have a picture of something along the lines of

After decades of waiting, the Witch-King was finally able to add the statue of the Last Fallen King into his collection.

Another guest, Barandiun, heard him talking, and later had very vivid dreams. Inside their head it looked like this:

https://i.imgur.com/cjKSTb8.jpg

Huinesoron had meanwhile graduated from burgling houses to catching dreams. This, they noted in their notebook, had been a dream that told them that:

The Witch-King never had learned that the Black Breath didn't work on statues.

Their former art teacher Galadriel was still trying pester them to make art. "You should draw that! Something like this!"

https://i.imgur.com/JTKAOGr.jpg

Sadly, her example picture was rejected and left to slowly rot on the barrow floor. When Formendacil came by it yet again some centuries later, in 2020, he thought it was a very timely illustration. "Look at this," he muttered. "As if the barrow-wights predicted that

The Witch-King was frustrated in his designs once the Stone-Trolls started to flatten the curve of the Black Breath's spread by wearing masks during the day.

THE END

Thanks everyone for playing! :D

Thinlómien
05-14-2020, 06:21 AM
Annnnd problem solved! Sorry for the mess, everyone, but this was terrible to sort out. It was so much easier in the good old days of photobucket and everybody's devices having a nicely low resolution that fits an ancient forum like the 'downs... :p

A recommendation for fellow mods in the 2020s:

1. The sooner you accept you will have to manually* resize every image you get, the easier your life is. (* I actually ran the files through a resizing website as a bulk upload, but still. I made everything 800px wide, but perhaps even less would have been better, at least for the vertical ones.)

2. Google is evil. Drive and photos don't work with the forum code. Use Imgur.

Special kudos to Lommy for putting this up and battling through the incompatibilities of the old site and new technology.

It was interesting also, how the horse kept on reappearing time and again. :)

(Tech support note: I don't know if you know, but Imgur can provide you with resized versions of your image. You can get the different-sized thumbnails by adding t, m, l, or h to the image link, between the image number and the .png/.jpg/whatever. Examples: the first image in tiny (https://i.imgur.com/X8RlEGpt.jpg), medium (https://i.imgur.com/X8RlEGpm.jpg), large (https://i.imgur.com/X8RlEGpl.jpg), and huge (https://i.imgur.com/X8RlEGph.jpg).)

It's beautiful... it's so beautiful... *.*

I'm fascinated by the fact that we started with the Argonath and somehow wound up back at statues. The hobbit also popped in and out a few times, and as Nog says, that horse...

Thanks, Lommy! This was great fun. :D

However the last two links don't work for me. Quite a good illustration how complicated this can be.

Yeah, I'm curious about how there were certain recurring elements, and I really love basically all the pictures and sentences.

I am laughing at the saga of poor Shadowfax (brilliant sentences and pictures there), and quite fascinated how he turned first into a rodent and then into a hobbit. :D Pitchwife's piece of art might just be my favourite, but I also love Galadriel's which she apologetically admitted she scrambled together in five minutes. Clearly both approaches work. :D

Also why do nazgűl and wizards always pop up in Paper Telephone even if they were not in the first sentence??

Clearly it's a thing! At least there wasn't the phantom (I think that alternated with the nazgűl anyway).

But anyway, something amazing! Great pictures - some absolute masterpieces, and sentences too, and there was a great variety! Thanks for modding and all the work, Lommy! And thanks everyone for participating! This was so much fun!

I agree, there was perhaps four or five pictures of extremely high quality, but Pitchwife truly blew me away.

Of the captions, especially Greenie's was amazing.

Wow, this was all kinds of awesome:
- Kath's lovely picture, which left me totally clueless what it was supposed to illustrate (although it makes sense!)
- The whole sequence Greenie / Oddwen / Legate (tranformative sentence!) / sally (adorable rabbit!)
- Hui's pic
- Form's visual condensation of a rather complex sentence
- Lommy's William Blake (I wondered where that sentence came from!)
- TGEW's naked hobbit slave (which prompted an amount of full frontal nudity hitherto unknown on these Downs IIRC) and Greenie's picture
- Baranduin's Witch King (btw can we call you Brandy?)
- G55's well-masked weeping angel warding of the Black Breath, and Form's description thereof
Great job, everyone!

Argh! With all the werewolf madness I missed the reveal!

Seriously, Lommy, what was with that opening sentence?! Also I have to admit, because both you and Legate have mentioned it, I traced that horse! :D

I think Nog's warrior rodent is brilliant but poor Shadowfax. From a king among horses to, well, a rat.

It took me so many reads of G55's sentence to understand why Form's picture had a ruler in it ...

Lommy I adore your picture but you definitely started a nudity trend - this is meant to be a family friendly forum! :p

And this time, it is here!

So, my fellow 'Downers, I present to you The Madness of Summer 2020 Paper Telephone.

It all began with an unassuming sentence, uttered once in the mists of time...

"Now it is time to drink the cup of farewell," she said. "Drink, Lord of the Galadhrim!"

The sentence got overheard by Brinniel, a promising artist-in-the-making, who depicted it thusly:

https://i.imgur.com/UYWFK90.jpg

Little could she imagine the veritable Pandora's box this image would open. Already when Rune saw the art, he concluded:

After having dabbled in Silmaril and ring making, the latest elvish fad had become event-specific drinking vessels.

This was nothing to Eönwë, who promptly created his own rendition of such historical account:

https://i.imgur.com/fJ4Tu56.jpg

It soon became clear that Rikae did not share the same view of events; observing the painting, they stated:

Goat-Legolas states the obvious to a case of party trophies.

The historical revisionism did not end there, however, as evidenced by the art of Pitchwife:

https://i.imgur.com/kzkrXap.jpg

Legate of Amon Lanc
07-24-2020, 02:49 AM
The imagery shocked Galadriel55 so much that the only thing she could recall was this ancient wisdom:

As any kid knows, if you cannot effectively shield yourself from tautology, you will tumble horns over hooves into socialism.

Faced with such a highbrow statement, Kath decided that the best course of action was to transform it into a more understandable form:

https://i.imgur.com/Z7JoAAF.jpg

Not everyone's view of things is the same. For instance, this made Greenie think of the following:

In a new story from C. S. Lewis, Mr Tumnus decides to join a civil rights protest.

Upon hearing this piece of news, Huinesoron decided that it was not too late to build a career as a children's books illustrator, and procured the following masterpiece:

https://i.imgur.com/MxgrSNb.jpg

Why said career did not really continue well is reflected by Lommy's interpretation of the scenery:

When the Halls of Mandos froze over, diabolical Lobelia Sackville-Baggins was ready.

Blind Guardian knew just what to do, and decided to capture the moment as seen here:

https://i.imgur.com/aw2KjRt.jpg

Legate of Amon Lanc
07-24-2020, 02:49 AM
The local construction expert, Nogrod, immediately made his own evaluation of what trespassed here:

The gates of Moria flipped when seeing Lobelia Sackville-Baggins trying to enter the mines with Bilbo's silverware.

TheGreatElvenWarrior was baffled upon hearing the request to portray such an unlikely configuration, nonetheless, it was necessary to try:

https://i.imgur.com/8u5s0Yd.jpg

It was up to Brinniel again. She braced herself, looked at the image first with one eye, then with both, and then stuttered out the following sentence:

The hobbit was relieved she brought along her spoons as she followed the path of the crack to the entrance of Moria in the Upside Down.

Rune was not sure whether it was her or his senses that were leaving, but if these were to be the last moments of his sanity, he would spend them drawing:

https://i.imgur.com/PgOtH44.jpg

The canvas was passed on to Eönwë, who made sure to record his interpretation of the event for posterity:

Frodo returns from Moria with gifts for the Sackville-Bagginses.

Rikae thought this was the perfect story for their tabloid newspaper, and went even so far to provide a catchy image for it:

https://i.imgur.com/oNLPeoX.png

Legate of Amon Lanc
07-24-2020, 02:50 AM
Pitchwife folded the newspaper, looked at his dogs, shook his head and commented:

Even disguised in a yellow jacket, Frodo couldn't deny his kinship with Lobelia.

Galadriel55, who had been just cutting grass near the window and absolutely not dropping any eaves, procured her art supplies and made the following caricature:

Kath found the image stacked amidst a pile of school papers she had been checking. She turned it over, and on the blank side, she scribbled:

Having already stolen the One Ring and Tom Bombadil's jacket, Bilbo started to formulate a plan for stealing his spoons back from Lobelia Sackville Baggins.

Greenie, who had been cleaning the leftover papers, decided to expand on the idea by providing the following drawing:

Huinesoron, having been in such a situation before, remained unfazed, and with scholarly dignity, typed the following:

Mrs Lily Cotton's raid on Lobelia's purloined spoons is widely regarded as the first act of the Hobbit Civil War (Afterlithe - Winterfilth, 1386).

When Lommy saw the encyclopaedia article thus created, her artistic spirit forced her to make a fitting picture to accompany it:

Blind Guardian was not quite so blind to ignore it, and concluded:

While visiting an art museum, two generations of Hobbits contemplate the role their spoons played in the creation of a Picasso piece.

Which, in turn, was something Nogrod could not resist to state his opinion on in the form of art:

And when this work of art reached TheGreatElvenWarrior, it was the basis for this final description:

The Great Artist explains to his apprentice how he took the hobbit spoons to make his masterpieces.

That's it! Here we are. Thank you all so very much for participating, it was a round with certainly many very interesting elements and twists and turns, and some amazing high-quality art as well as many creative sentences. It has been a lot of fun for me :D and I certainly hope it was for you as well.

Yesssss!

I really like Brinniel's opening picture - there's something about the style that really appeals to me. Rikae's humour of 'states the obvious' led perfectly into Pitch's reference-packed image, which in turn gave G55 the perfect opening.

And that's where Mr. Tumnus came from! I did wonder. ^_^ I did also suspect that the umbrella might transform Tumnus into Lobelia, so I'm pleased to know I got that right.

The Gates of Moria proved surprisingly persistant... I like Rune's hobbit, it charms me. And I'm wildly amused by the fact that Eonwe led us away from the spoons, only for Rikae to bring them straight back.

The Amazing Transforming Jacket (which Greenie's lovely picture had me convinced was Lily's dressing-gown!) led to Lommy's inspired interpretation of my ramblings, and so enabled Nogrod to transform our protagonist one last time. I love the fact that the last two pictures, plus the inset in Nogrod's, all share the same layout.

That was heaps of fun! I would apologise for dragging Lobelia into thing, but I'm not gonna. ^_^

It's funny how some things just seem to refuse to disappear from the story - like Lobelia & the spoons this time.

It was quite a hilarious round, but I would still like to celebrate the early exchange where Rikae's "stating the obvious" and "party trophies" turned into tautologies & socialism - and to Mr. Tumnus! I was literally laughing out loud sitting alone at my laptop.

The goat was Legolas? The GOAT was flipping LEGOLAS?! o.0

I need a moment.

I think I may need to explain that. You see, that goat was driving me absolutely bonkers for weeks. I really wanted to know what in Udun was going on in that picture. Hilariously, I even got the taking the hobbits to Isengard reference - just didn't know what to do with it in context, and was this close to responding with "boil it, mash it, stick it in a stew". So I spent lots of time gazing open-mouthed upon Pitchie's beautiful work of art, wondering what in the name of sanity could have happened in the first quarter (!) of the PT.

...Turns out, a lot.

I can't believe that simple, bland, innocent sentence was the mother of all madness. And every picture and sentence were evolving things one step further at a rapid pace. And then we finally reached the "constant" element (the state of equilibrium?) with Lobelia's spoons. It amused me to see how many stories and interpretations could still focus on those spoons! It took me 2 reads to understand how Bilbo in Bombadil's jacket became Lily Cotton - but it's brilliant! And the final sentence, which is very suitably meta: how the artists used Lobelia's spoons for their masterpieces, huh? ;)

Favourite sentences: Rune's very first sentence, which was an inspired an elaborate interpretation. Lommy's frozen Halls of Mandos and diabolical Lobelia. Kath's, which reveals Bilbo's career as a burglar to be much more extensive than he would have us believe.

Favourite drawings: Pitchwife's goat picture, which drove me crazy but is a wonderful art piece (and of course is perfectly logical now with the preceding steps in sight). Likewise, Hui's picture can easily go on a book cover. TGEW's, which was a fabulous literal interpretation. Rikae's, which made me laugh. Greenie's sour-faced Lobelia. Lommy's creative depiction of a civil war.

That was an excellent round! I agree with Nog that the early rapid evolution was absolutely hilarious - but likewise all the different takes on Lobelia and her spoons. And I can finally have peace now and stop wondering how that goat wandered into the story and casually shield-coasted into a box of trophies...

What a fun game! I'm up for modding next round if anyone is interested in playing.

Like Galadriel55, I loved Rune's first sentence. I thought that Brin's interpretation of the starting quote was really lovely and succinct and Rune made it (unintentionally) hilarious right at the beginning of the game. :D Eönwë's picture was really hilarious. I loved all the very specific events on each dish.

Pitch's picture was strange and fun. I had to read over the sentence carefully again when I saw it because goat-Legolas really threw me off my guard. Kath's picture and Greenie's sentence were a good combo, it was fun to see Mr. Tumnus come into the craziness. Huinesoron's picture was absolutely gorgeous, and I love how his picture of Mr. Tumnus, someone known for his umbrella, brought us back to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, someone else also known for her umbrella. It seems that everybody loves Lobelia, she keeps making appearances during our games, and I really love it!

Rikae's picture made Baranduin and me laugh out loud. I thought it was really funny how Frodo's expression in G55's pic looks so anxious and uncomfortable, it really captures a mood.

And the final sentence, which is very suitably meta: how the artists used Lobelia's spoons for their masterpieces, huh? ;)

Hey, it was the final sentence, I figured I could be ambiguous. And also, I'm sure I don't know what you mean about my sentence being "suitably meta". I play it straight here! :p

Random, but hopefully chronological thoughts:

First of all I think Brinn did a good job getting us started, an innocent sentence perhaps, but not easy to convert into a drawing (in my opinion).

Also who would have thought that Rikae writing "Goat-Legolas", could result in such lovely imagery. Once again I am i awe of Pitch's drawing (nice take on party trophy)

I am glad that this game contained the sentence of G55, but I am so happy that I didn't have to draw it.

When I had to draw I was so confused by "the upside down", and I am happy to see that I was not alone in being confused by this element.

Having already praised his drawing things might get to his head, but I also like the sentence that Pitch came up with.

The facial expression that Greenie managed to get on Lobelia is priceless, and will haunt me whenever I pass Lobeliavej on my way to the bus.

When Lommy decided to incorporate Guernica as a symbol of a hobbit civil war my head exploded, and the rest of me disintegrated when Nogrod decided to Brigitte Bardot into the mix.

I always love how in things like Paper Telephone or the story writing there are certain elements that keep popping up. The spoons were a marvellous example of it this time!

Legate, thank you for modding this round!

Of course Paper Telephone comes out right when I decide to go on a Scotland trip and deliberately keep away from computers for weeks! Anyway what a fabulous round - Goat-Legolas was obviously my favourite bit, especially combined with the inspired evolution of "party trophies". Although I'm still not quite sure how that led to Lobelia, the Hobbit Civil War, and Picasso references! Fantastic job everyone, and thanks Legate for modding! <3
