Yes.

I'm quite a fan of Bill Bryson (I certainly buy all his books and devour them within mere hours), so imagine my surprise when I opened his latest, The Life And Times Of The Thunderbolt Kid to discover something I had not quite realised before. He looks suspiciously like a Downer! ;)

See who you think Bill Bryson reminds you of before scrolling down:

Wow ... I was scrolling up this thread, since for some reason I started reading from the last post and then up... and when I saw LMP's picture and then the other one I thought "Hm... LMP really looks good on a suit" I had no clue that was not him... untill I read what Lal said.

Lal, there's no link to a picture of Bill Bryson in your post. Was it lost or did you intend folks to do a google image search?

The only image that comes up on my screen, Kath, is the pic which LMP has given us purporting to be him. ;) There's a blank, or rather black, space between it and Lal's text and highlighting produces only a think blue line down the left side.

Not that I don't know what Bryson looks like. It's amazing how facial hair produces such similarities. Well, I suppose the absence of other hair ...

But I"m not surprised. Esty's been parading around as Princess Fiona for her entire time here. ;)

Folwren's looks change with her name. As Foley she is about 17, has curly brown hair, just below her shoulders, laughing blue eyes, and a flashing smile. Folwren is about 19, has black hair, about the same length as Foley's but straight, dark brown eyes, and rarely grins, but does smile occasionally. She is also almost tall for a girl.

She is the only Downer so far that I have formed an opinion on.

1. Global warming made even the normall NW Germany become really hot
2. My hair needed lots of care and time
3. My girlfriend didn't really approve of it, as well as many friends of mine.

I can't say I regret cutting it, it was a nice time having it long, but in then end, I'm happy with the new spiky haircut.

Well, that explains it. But I must say I would disagree with your #1, for example speaking for me I think Prague is somewhat more to south than Neuenrade, and though maybe it's a little bit warmer (*ahem* googles at the thermometer), I wouldn't cut my hair just because of that... Because we are, as a rule, against things that are high maintenance.

Twice in my life, I've had beyond shoulder length hair and both times, after a few years, I grew tired of having to spend 20 minutes drying it. So... off it all came!

Exactly! I'm currently growing my hair longer, but I might just shave it off because if I spend more then 5 seconds with a hairbrush I think it’s too much time wasted. 1 to 2 centimeters is much better.

A few days ago I was talking with a friend of mine who doesn't have an account here but knows quite a lot about the Downs and some downers anyway. I don't remember anymore what we were discussing, but she asked me how old Hookbill is. "About 20 years, I think", I told her. "Whaa!?" she replied, "I have always been imagining he's some 45-year-old grandpa! You know, a person who goes regularly to have a beer with the Saucepan Man and davem!"

I was quite amused and decided to ask her what she thinks other downers are like, then. Here are some results how a non-downer imagines downers- and not only what they look like.

"Feanor of the Peredhil is a girl, I think? She has long, curly, brown hair. She reads much and doesn't spend all her time on computer."

"Lalwendë is a 30-year-old American single mother. She reads a lot of books: Tolkien and romance novels."

"Xyzzy is a very skinny teenager boy who wears glasses. He doesn't have any muscles, I would win him in arm wrestling like 6-0. All he does is to play with his computer."

"Legate looks wise and silly at the same time... And he looks like he's lost."

"Mormegil is in his early twenties. He's a quiet introvert who doesn't have any life but computer. He has a hooknose and wears mostly black."

"Mithalwen has brown hair, of the same colour as Lommy's but a little shorter. He's about 23 years old and has a nose like a potato.
And I know Mithalwen is a she; I just can't help but imagine her a man because her nick, despite that -wen, is so masculine!"

"Boromir88... Wait a minute? Is that a he or a she? I think it's a she. She's a teenager girl who chose that nick because she has a crush on Boromir. She has curly brown hair, and she usually wears light blue jeans and a blue shirt. And she also wears glasses.
But if it's a he, well, he's a teenager boy who admires Boromir. He looks quite the same as the she-version, except his hair is straight. And he tends to go and run in a forest with his friends, and they fight each other with toy swords."

*chuckles*

Note, please (and I'm sure the older members will do), the typical connection of words "45-year old grandpa". Anyway, looks like Hookbill made himself quite an interesting profile! (Well, actually, it was not him. We call that "twisted rumours". Not that the editor of The Downer could expect more.)

I must say however that these opinions above are in some things close to how I used to imagine, or think about, these Downers when I was completely new around here. More or less. Well, less, rather. I mean Boromir, mainly - that was pretty close.

Lost? Oh my, in what way?

I don't think there has ever been a less accurate description... Ever. Apart from that one guy who thought I was Moses...
Besides all this, I'm a teetotaler anyway. So no beer, even if the Pan Man and Mr Dave are involved. :p

I must say, it does not sound that inapropriate given the fact I am quite fond of Saruman...

In my imagination, you also have a beard. But it is brown, or rather, somewhat rusty. Slightly orange-ish, you know. And you wear this horned helmet and have a pickaxe sticking from over your shoulder. Wearing blue outfit. And you are standing in a railway station hall. :D

For potentional readers, of course I know Aganzir is female... this image in my mind also is.

P.S. Oh, and I forgot one important thing - you are grinning right now.

Feanor of the Peredhil
01-06-2008, 04:50 PM
Feanor of the Peredhil is a girl, I think?

Distinctly so.

She has long, curly, brown hair.

Pretty accurate, when it's not being shaved off, dyed unnatural colors, or straightened... It's currently its natural reddish-goldish-brown (and has been for, wait for it, almost three whole months!), rather short, quite messy...

She reads much

I just inhaled a book on paper graffiti art in the past two hours...

and doesn't spend all her time on computer.

Unless, of course, I'm bored at work.

Spot on, if y'ask me.

Definitely accurate on B88. :smokin:

Some imaginings I've been having:

Aganzir, I'm rather sorry... up until wolving with you, due to limited interaction, I had you as a red-headed teenage boy somewhere in the midwest of Canada.

Macalaure is blonde. I can't make it go away. Blonde hair, green eyes. He wears wire rimmed specs and button up shirts. Rarely wears jeans, and if he does, they aren't blue. Doesn't own sneakers.

It's troublesome, having seen pics of so many 'Downers. My old imaginings got replaced by new ideas. It's like trying to read the books after having seen the movies... Almost depressing.

Although he does own two pairs of sneakers, he never wears them, not even while hiking through the mud after dark.

I always thought of Macalaure as blonde too, before I saw his picture. (And no, it isn't because I think 'all Germans are blonde', since I also thought he was English!) Sandy blonde hair, tall, and kind-looking.
Legate, for some reason, I pictured as looking more like Macalaure actually does, and I keep thinking he is in his late 20's even though I know otherwise.

Mithalwen

Well I don't know whether to be delighted to be returned to the age of 23 (a particularly exciting year in my life which started with my graduation, continued with a trip around the states and ended living in Paris round the corner from the Eiffel Tower!) or mortified to be made male and brunette .... and the nose... is not so bad ... I hope .. a little too wide (fault of my Dad - some people think it has been broken) and long (fault of my mum) and slightly aquiline but in half profile it is a "Hathaway nose " a clear link with the side of my family I most relate to so I don't know I would change it if I could.

The screen name mith-alwen means Grey Tree (according to some translator) so the -wen ending is misleading - the name is androgynous. It was not a name chosen with any great thought- just one I had to hand from a RPG elsewhere - since I did not realise how the downs would take over my life. However it does amuse me that both my real and screen names are usually shortened to a form used by both genders. If I had thought about it I might have chosen something unquestionably girly but then I don't suppose I could have rendered "Pink fluffy bunny slippers" into Elvish :p)

But it looks a bit funny with your brown hair. Like you were dressing up as Father Christmas.

Surprisingly, wrong. But the colour somewhat corresponds to my hair colour- only add there a little blond and make sure there's just very little orange.
And you wear this horned helmet
Wrong. But if I found a horned helmet somewhere, I think I might like it. I'd prefer a Roman officer's helmet though.
and have a pickaxe sticking from over your shoulder.
I don't own any pickaxes and seldom carry my axes with me in public anyway. But you know, this isn't actually so far from being one of my good ol' rpg characters.
Wearing blue outfit.
Although blue is one of my favourite colours, I don't have any blue clothes.
And you are standing in a railway station hall.
I don't know about other countries, but in Finland railway station is the place where goths and emo kids and such gather. So not for me then, unless I'm waiting for somebody there. I have no clue though why I would be waiting for somebody dressed like that. :D
P.S. Oh, and I forgot one important thing - you are grinning right now.
That's the most accurate thing. :D

When I play werewolf with Nogrod I always think he looks like Alastor Moody (http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9976/2632636cl.jpg) of the Harry Potter films. I really have no idea why. Except that that man looks mad in the way Noggie plays.

Usually I imagine, though, that people look like their avatars. I guess I will never be able to stop thinking of Mith as her previous avatar (only with the distinction that Mith has darker hair and a less round face).

But coming back to the general discussion: sure the avatars seem to guide one's perception of others pretty strongly.

And they seem to sneak to one's choice of them as well. Before this one (taken after the COH was published) I had as an avvie a picture of youg Dimitri Shostakovich. That's really quite an interesting stance given to Turin. Are you sure you don't mean you see Mac as the Dragon about to devour the trussed up maidens? There's a something to that look in the dragon's face . . . :)

Oh dear... Aganzir imagines me as Turin and Rikae imagines Turin as me. What is it that I remind nobody of a likeable character?

I'm happy I'm an only child. :D

Let me see...

I imagine Aganzir as being on the smaller side. She has light brown hair and a long pony tail. Her eyes are gentle, but they leave no doubt that you do not mess with her. Her teachers might not admit it, but they are slightly afraid of her.

I can't help it, but I imagine everybody who doesn't give their birthday in their profiles, or whose approximate age I haven't heard of elsewhere, as being over fifty. With regards to that, I imagine Bêthberry as having mid-long black hair, but wearing the all too visible grey portion among it with pride.
I also imagine her as a Sagittarius.

Lalaith has blonde hair, with a strong reddish hue in it, which she also wears as a pony tail. She a pointy nose and bright freckles. She has a restless bearing, is very thin, and dresses casual.

I can't help but imagine A Little Green as a smaller copy of Lommy, only with darker hair and a look in her eyes that suggest a little more of a mean streak.

Gwathagor has black hair, short and slightly curly. He'd be a physically intimidating appearance if he wasn't so significantly challenged in height. ;)
And he's a Leo.

Gwathagor....is....less than 20. He wears glasses. He is average height, has sandy blond hair, wears glasses, and is slightly freckled. He is skinny, but is in good physical condition, qutie capable of running about and playing sports and doing fun stuff like that. He has brown eyes and quite often laughs.

A Little Green, with and without her hints above, is the same height as Lommy. She is skinny, a little pale, fair haired...and her hair is very fine, somewhat thin, and difficult to manage. She has very, very nice blue eyes.

Hee hee. The joys of the internet.
That's even better than Lommy's vision of me as a tall athletic roller-skater. I am small, brown-haired and girlie in both face and figure. I am famed for my ability to sit/lie still for long periods, and for never ever being seen in sports/casual clothes, even when walking up mountains.

Well, you have got the "over fifty" part right, but it's far more far 'over fifty' than you might expect.

Bêthberry is an RPG character who commited the gravest of sins, before the Downs developed its RPG rules about appropriating Tolkien's characters, by being the daughter of Tom and Goldberry. She is thus several ages over fifty.

:D

Since I never played her in the Seventh Age, I'm not sure if her hair would indeed by grey by now. Most likely. But in the Third Age it was copper.

And I wonder, did Tolkien follow traditional astrology or did he create his own? If he didn't, ooooh, there's great room for someone to create a Middle-earth astrology. Imagine the constellations' names after First Age events and characters--and not just Venus as Earendil. What fun for writers of fanfiction!

Well, you don't know how tall I am! :P

In spite of the secret date of birth, I picture Bêthberry between 25 and 30, with beautiful glossy brown hair, slightly short and very pretty.

Now it seems to all have been given away, but I pictured Greenie as a a lighter-haired Lommy.

Gwathagor is 6'7", gangly and looks disturbingly like Lurch.

TheGreatElvenWarrior is female, right? Well, I always had an image in my mind of a 17 year old skater-dude from the west coast with long bangs hanging in his face. I guess that can be made into a "skater-chick".

Aganzir is very difficult to picture. Even though I know she is female, I always picture an androgynous, ageless, pale skinned and black-haired person with a mischievous smirk.

I'm a bit shorter than average and my hair colour is pretty much that (usually loose, sometimes plaited and almost never on a ponytail, though). According to Lommy, she doesn't know if my eyes are gentle but she wouldn't be surprised if the rest was true.

Well, you don't know how tall I am! :P

I was dragged out shopping the other day, and one of the sales clerks in the men's department had an almost identical face as Encaitare.

Needless to say I stopped and most likely gave her an uncomfortable stare, but I had a weird moment of being shocked and slightly scarred at the same. It really didn't help that she gave the usual smile, because I felt like an idiot by then.

Though, she looked too short to be Encaitare, so at least that let me escape from having to make up a stupid excuse for being a creepy dork and starring.

Still, it is creepy when that happens. I can understand Nogrod's experience exactly, except I was more in a state of bewilderment of the other kind, I guess.

I know it is a bad assumption, but ever since you revealed your Pogue-appreciation, I had a strong picture of you as of the male gender. I know, it is bad to assume that, but most people I meet who actually know who they are, well, are male.
Which is sad too, because Kristy MacColl was with them for awhile, and she was (and is) amazing! I would have figured more women would be aware of The Pogues just because of her for starters, but I guess it is mostly of where I live that no one has a clue who they are. *sigh*

*sigh*

Bethberry, dear lady, I have the highest respect for you. I picture you as tall, slender, older-ish (that is, 40's), but very pretty and very young looking. You have long, straight dark brown hair. Your skin is a perfect complexion, pale and smooth and without blemish, your eyes are deep brown. You often smile and frequently laugh, and are almost always in a good mood.
You're also always wearing a long skirted dress of dark blue.

I first got this impression when I joined Rohan on the RPing forums.

Ah, yes. I wondered sometimes if the Innkeeper should have been cranky and snarly, but once in a character, one is stuck. Still, I"m happy to hear that character came through to you. Of course, given the shenanigans going on now in Rohan, I gather the old inn is completely destroyed. Like much of Middle-earth, change works its way . . . Has your character aged at all?

Ahem. I've known, loved and danced drunk to the Pogues since some of you were probably still in nappies. I've seen them live, too - although I admit I was the only person in the building, other than Caitlin O'Riordan, wearing a skirt. THE Ka

The Ka: gratuitously long black hair, skin that ranges, depending on nothing in particular, in tone from albino to a burnished copper. Heavily lined eyes. Always very heavily lined eyes.

Awh, you are flattering me, you know that?

I was *supposed* to have black hair like my great-grandmother, but instead I ended up with her daughter's weird mahogany/brown-black as the years have gone by. Strange world it is, or not very.
You're right about the skin, dead on in fact. I change like a lizard, and peel like one too. Though I rarely burn, just tan or further my chances of skin cancer. Whatever comes first.

Heavy lined? Hmm, sometimes, when I feel like it. Usually I just use whatever makes them look bigger, since they're small and almond shapped.

Hmm, as for Fea... Well, this is how I see you, another type of portrait of sorts:

Has deep eyes, but not too dark. Ones that show a person that is well grounded, but not a novice to the imagination and thinking outside the sphere of things. Oval-like face, with a witty but sensible smile that tells there's new thoughts and plans afoot. Overall appearance gives a deeper meaning to the term, 'still waters run deep'. That's the term that pops into my head when I think of Fea.

Don't forget Cait O'Riordan!

*smacks forehead* "May the Almighties Shane, Cait, and Kristy throw rum in my face to put out my eyes for that."

a witty but sensible smile that tells there's new thoughts and plans afoot.

I had brunch this past weekend with a fantastically wry artist clad in purple, lime green, and orange plaid, a grandpa-cardigan, a winter hat, and a pair of duct-tape repaired gold sunglasses about the size of my head. And black Chuck Taylors. He asked if I used to wear braces. The other folks present were confused. The question had seemed to come from nowhere. Thing was, he'd noticed within moments of meeting me that I tend to cover my mouth unobtrusively when I smile. Nobody ever sees that. And then he gave me a magazine cut out of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. It was a great meal.

The thing about me imagining BDers is that I know how way too many of you look. :D

Usually, though, I imagine (or at least associate) Downers with their avvies.

There are those that I've seen photos of, but I still picture them differently (bad habbit!). For example, I just can't see Nerwen without the fair hair of her Galadriel avatar. Lalwende is a cross between Bilbo and Irish (take what you will of it). Others I picture as they are in photos, but still that avvie association lingers there. For example, I always associate Pitch and Zil with blackand white, and Agan with orange/yellow.

There are some that I don't know how they look at all. Mith and Lalaith look exactly like their avvies. Eonwe, despite his description of himself earlier in the thread, is pretty pale, possibly with glasses (but not always), pretty tall, thin, and either has a mop of very fair surly hair or very dark slick hair. I still can't decide on the hair - one day I imagine it one way, and another day it's the other...

This thread was so much fun before the Facebook group. It almost fell into obscurity. Despite the fact that not only have I seen pictures, but actually met Lal in person, on the Barrow-Downs she will always be that picture of Bilbo. It's funny, for some Downers, the people they are on Facebook are different to me than their personas here, and for others, the FB person and Downer are the same.

Hmm, very interesting... I think the real Galadriel's image has a lot of influence here. Tallish? Hm, average, I'd say. Slim? Not chubby, but can't say I'm slim either. Long wavy blonde hair? It's wavy, but neither blonde not long... Confident and humble? Neither nor. :D

After we discovered the photo page doesn't work, Volo and I spent a good hour trying to fix it (digging Volo's account details up from the mathom house that's the internet, that is) and found all the old photos still safely tucked away in his hard drive. And man, are they cute! I'll make him do something about the page as long as we're still housemates.

Anyway - now that I found my way here I might as well share some impressions.

I first thought Tar-Jêx was an American or German man in his mid-30s who was really into Númenor and enacted naval battles with miniatures. Now I know most of that is not true but I still think he likes Númenor and wargaming. Also he drinks hot chocolate in the evenings. His hair is light brown and long.

Coppermirror is 19 and American and has reddish blond hair and glasses. She's too clever for school so she spends her classes making crossword puzzles at the back of the room. She rides a bike and likes to read letters by famous authors.

Zigûr has dreadlocks and lots of tattoos and he rides a motorcycle. He's 30-40 and works in IT. He likes to drink beer and watch the sunset in beach boulevard pubs while rereading Sauron Defeated over and over.

Galin is a lumberjack. He's secretly building his own personal Barad-dûr in his backyard.

IxnaY AintsaY is a tall cold woman who wears her long black hair plaited. She lives in a tower somewhere north.

Zigûr has dreadlocks and lots of tattoos and he rides a motorcycle. He's 30-40 and works in IT. He likes to drink beer and watch the sunset in beach boulevard pubs while rereading Sauron Defeated over and over.
Amusingly, and at the risk of giving too much away about myself (although I'm part of the Facebook group so I can be seen there already):
I keep my hair short
I don't have tattoos (and don't particularly like them)
I don't drive (and consider motorcycles to be very dangerous)
I'm in my mid-twenties
I'm an English academic-in-training
I prefer red wine to beer, although I do like a good German Beer
I haven't actually read all of Sauron Defeated (although admittedly I have read all of the Notion Club Papers and Drowning of Anadûnë material because of it's relation to Sauron - it was the draft of The Lord of the Rings part that I didn't get through, having read the previous three volumes, because of the enormity of the Shelob's Lair draft chapter)

Funny how what we say gives a very different impression of ourselves.

IxnaY AintsaY is a tall cold woman who wears her long black hair plaited. She lives in a tower somewhere north.

I do, in fact, "live...somewhere". I'd love to know what gave me away. :P

(And I wonder what it says about me that I got a little thrill in seeing my screen-name in this thread? Nothing good, I'd guess. ;) )
