`How like old times!' they said. `Just as Christmas is coming, too. So seasonable. How pleased the King will be! He will be able to have Real Tail this Christmas.'
JRR Tolkien - Farmer Giles of Ham
I have a question also. May we choose a quote from any of Tolkien's writings, or is there a specific topic ?
Estelyn Telcontar
12-19-2006, 02:38 AM
Well done, The Might, and welcome to a thread that seems to be dominated by German language members! ;) (Guinevere's location tells you where she lives; mine is currently Christmas-themed, but I live in Germany, even in NRW, like you!) Tuor, who started the thread, is the only regular who doesn't speak German. :)
This thread is reserved for Tolkien's minor works; the list of works we've used in is the first post, but I'll post it here for convenience: Roverandom, Farmer Giles, Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, and perhaps The Father Christmas Letters (which is, in a sense, about 100% quotes). I'm not sure, because of the style, of including The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son. We have included The Homecoming, since we have it in the book Tree and Leaf, but haven't yet used the Father Christmas Letters. I do have that book, so if others do as well, we could include those. In addition, several of us have a copy of Tolkien's poem The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun, so we occasionally use that. Oh, and we have used Tolkien's lecture 'On Fairy-Stories' and the poem 'Mythopoeia', since both are also in Tree and Leaf, but not often.
Please let us know which books and stories you have; we'll be happy to choose from the list so that you can participate regularly! It's your turn to post a new one now.

I have Roverandom, Farmer Giles, Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Leaf by Niggle, and the Father Christmas Letters. Anyway, I intend to purchase the missing works sometime soon, so no need to not use all of them in this thread.

It must be from the Father Christmas letters, since that's a most appropriate book for this season.
and I already can see who is speaking: the North Polar Bear!
I must go and help pack. I don't know what Father Christmas would do without me. He always forgets what a lot of packing I do for him.

Well, well, what do you know - North Polar Bear is a vegetarian?! I do not eat
turkey or meat:
I stick to the sweet.
Which is why
(as all know) I
am so sweet myself,
you thinuous elf!
Goodby!
(Father Christmas Letters, 1938)
(Alas, I have enjoyed goodly portions of both turkey and sweets over the holidays and will have to eat less and walk more afterwards...)

Aha! An unexpected location, yet wonderfully chosen! Tolkien quotes from Drayton's Nymphidia: And windows of the eyes of cats,
And for the roof, instead of slats,
Is covered with the wings of bats. That's the kind of pigwiggery that Tolkien despises - no wonder it didn't sound typical of our favorite author! Great quote, TM.
