" No practical or economic use. I dare say he could have been made into a serviceable cog of some sort, if you schoolmasters knew your business."
Councillor Tompkins to Atkins, about poor Niggle.
(you forgot an e in "use", Esty, which made me rack my head about what word it could possibly be! ;) )

Still not easy, but it must be my lucky day - I have the answer!
Now fly off and amuse yourself. Don't worry the moonbeams, and don't kill my white rabbits, and come home when you are hungry! The Man-in-the-Moon to Roverandom (also to the moon-dog, who quotes exactly the same sentence)
Guinevere
05-28-2005, 03:33 PM
Wow, that was really well done, Esty - with so few letters! http://www.travar.de/Templates/Webprojekt/images/notworthy.gif
Did you guess the rabbits?
Estelyn Telcontar
05-29-2005, 05:44 AM
"worry" and "rabbits" - and then everything was clear!

Impressive, Guinevere! Your ability to get these with so little evidence makes you the Quotes-Columbo of the Downs!
I'm afraid I'll have to miss out on this thread for the next several weeks, as I'll be on vacation with erratic internet access - I hope the rest of you will carry on!

It seems to me that you have a luck that you can trust. But take also a long rope, for you may need it, unless my foresight deceives me. That's the parson, speaking to Farmer Giles of Ham of something that Tolkien apparently thought important (see LotR) - packing a rope as a precaution!

Why, it is indeed tea-time with the Big T! Said Tom Bombadil: 'Here's my pretty maiden!

yellow cream, honeycomb, white bread and butter;
roses at the window-sill and peeping round the shutter.
Wedding tea - and all with no cooking!

Unidentified 'they' (supposedly hobbits) to the Lonely Troll, friend of Perry-the-Winkle's:
A beautiful cramsome cake,
O bake for us, please, or two, or more;
O bake!
I'm glad to be back too :)
Guinevere
07-14-2005, 09:05 AM
That's the one, HI! :)
and I have a question to Englishspeaking people: what on earth is "cramsome" ??? (I couldn't find it in my dictionaries)
(btw, the smiley is not meant "sarcastic", but "wondering"!)
Estelyn Telcontar
07-14-2005, 09:14 AM
Guinevere, I've read a lot in my life and have picked up a lot of vocabulary, but this word has never showed up anywhere else in my experience. We should perhaps ask someone who has access to the OED...
Estelyn Telcontar
07-18-2005, 12:32 AM
*Esty pokes HI - next one, please! We're just a tiny bit addicted, you know! ;)
HerenIstarion
07-19-2005, 01:27 AM
I always figured 'cramsome' to mean at the same time 'crispy' and 'doughy-fattening'. As far as my knowledge reaches, 'cram' is a term to indicate food for fattening domestic animals.
As for the next quote (thanks for poking, Esty :D), it goes perfectly with my current mood ;):
--- -- --- ----- ----- ------- ----, -- -------- ---- ------ ------, ---- ---- - ---- --- ----- -- ----, ------ - ------ ---- ---- ---- --- ---!
Estelyn Telcontar
07-19-2005, 06:03 AM
Now, just what mood could you be in, and which letter would be useful in finding that out? I'll have to guess and will resort to my customary "T".
HerenIstarion
07-19-2005, 07:02 AM

07-20-2005, 12:26 AM
MY apologies, there is a mistake in my previous ('ot' in the third word from the end, not in the fourth). I believe there are no mistakes in there anymore

HerenIstarion
07-20-2005, 04:07 AM
Esty, did you notice that for several posts in a row now we keep perfect distance of 300 posts in between our post score? :D
That aside, there are some e's in there, sure:

07-20-2005, 06:23 AM
No, I haven't been paying attention to my post count, HI, but I did find the quote! It's Aotrou, speaking to his wife Itroun (in the Lay named after them): Yet if thy heart still longing hold,
or lightest wish remain untold,
that will I find and bring to thee,
though I should ride both land and sea!
Aww, White Knight Istarion is longing to do great deeds for his Missus! ;)
HerenIstarion
07-20-2005, 06:32 AM
Posts re: in this in and out row of posting it caught my eye. With current post, I'll get it back to 300 - 3948-3648 :D
White Knight re: not purely white, rather whitish or even greyish :D. But I try harder!
And the quote itself re: Of course, my lady, you are entitled to proceed
Estelyn Telcontar
07-20-2005, 06:41 AM
WARNING: Just this once, I am using a line that is not a quote; it is not spoken directly by anyone, but is a part of the narrative. However, it seemed such an appropriate tribute to Heren and Mrs. Istarion that I decided to use it anyway.
