With a proviso that next quote is still to be asked by Galadel Vinorel, as I do not intend to play a vulture here, I'll answer that question
That was King of Faery (Prentice) to retired Master Cook Nokes at their last meeting, just before the former provided the latter with the effective diet recipe
Estelyn Telcontar
11-09-2004, 07:36 AM
Correct, HI - it's been a week since Galadel posted on the Downs, so if she doesn't take her turn within the next few days, please post a new quote so that this worthy thread does not die!

I know I'm great, I know! :smokin:
Seriously, convalescence gave it away - too long and uncommon a word, you know :)
Concerning the method, 'short words' are almost always easy to get, when you have t's - i.e it, that, not, but, get type of words, and, when one has a 13-letter key word in there, the rest is the speed of search :)
Ok, on to next one:

If it comes to courtesy, I see none in calling your elders and betters by ill names. Take your Fairy and your nonsense somewhere else!
Estelyn Telcontar
12-02-2004, 01:37 PM
I'm flabbergasted - how did you do that??? You're right, of course.
HerenIstarion
12-02-2004, 02:09 PM
This is how I do it:
Is (if, as, so) it ----- to ----t---, I may (see, say, lie, die,) ---- is killing (calling, rolling, tolling, billing) ---- elders (almond, albino, alpine) and (for) betters -- ill -----. Take (took, told), ---- ----- --- ---- -------- --------- glad, (clad, olid, slid, bled, else)!
The main goal is to guess out some key-words - in this case - betters (when combined with 'calling', as I do not remember much 'killings' with JRRT - 'slaying' a-plenty, but 'killings' not that much, still more in 'minor works' - so, I assume it is 'calling'. I know only one person to accuse somebody of 'calling his betters' - else is technical staff of finding exact quote :)
To calculate possibilities, I employ Lingvo 9 (translating tool - Russian/English, but there are versions with French, German and Italian as well) - in my case, very useful facility to check spelling and meaning out, and I've found, for PoF type of games too. Per instance, the last word has a second 'l' in it. It may have a consonant before l (as in 'bled, clad'), or may not. 'else' comes to mind, but to double-check it, I may type something like 'alxe' into itno Lingvo search field. In return, it comes up with possible choices: axle and aloe. For 'elxe' - else and Elbe come out, for 'olxe' - nothing sensible. What my role is, is to make correct choice and than go for books :smokin:
So good for craft secret :D

No further clues needed - I took the time to work it out and found the quote! It's from Roverandom, and the passage names the speaker: 'It makes me homesick,' said the moon-dog. 'It's just like the stuff that used to fall in the town where I was a puppy - on the world, you know. O! the chimneys there, tall as moon-trees; and the black smoke; and the red furnace fires! I get a bit tired of white at times. It's very difficult to get really dirty on the moon.' Did this remind you of the snow in Switzerland at this time of year? :)

http://www.travar.de/Templates/Webprojekt/images/idea.gif Aotrou to Itroun, administering the potion...
"I drink to thee for health and bliss,
fair love," he said, "and with this kiss
the pledge I pass. Come, drink it deep!
The wine is sweet, the cup is steep!"
Tricksy one! ;) You wrote it down like prose... but I recognized it all the same.
