Ah, now I recognize the quote! It's one of my favourites from Roverandom, and it's the title "hero" speaking to himself: I don't believe half of them know where they are going to, or why they are going there, or would know it if they got there. For some reason, that strikes me as being an appropriate remark about politicians! :D

Guinevere
03-17-2007, 02:31 PM
Well done, Esty! :) and I agree about the politicians.

Estelyn Telcontar
03-17-2007, 02:38 PM

I thought it might be from the Father X-mas letters, or from Roverandom, but haven't been able to locate it so far. :(

Estelyn Telcontar
05-20-2007, 04:10 AM
Yes, that's absolutely right! And it is Father Christmas speaking to Polar Bear (am I polar bear obsessed these days, what with Knut and all?!) - and it wasn't the young polar bears who were responsible for the disorder.

Interesting general thought - evil and disorder go hand in hand...

Guinevere

Just for completeness' sake, and the fact I have nothing better to do, I'll just say "k"to get:

Guinevere
08-02-2008, 07:59 AM
No, the quote isn't from "Roverandom"

Estelyn Telcontar
10-16-2008, 06:55 AM
I have been puzzled over the speaker of this quote for along time - I could have sworn it was Gandalf in LotR, but of course that wouldn't be on-topic on this thread! The quote I recognize; I paged through Farmer Giles, as it occurred to me that it could be there, but it wasn't. You said above that it's not in Roverandom, and I'm quite sure it's not in Smith or Leaf either. It's not poetry, so it can't be in the Tom Bombadil cycle. On Fairy Stories? I doubt it. The Homecoming of the guys with the difficult-to-spell names? Ditto. Maybe the Father Christmas Letters? Is it Father Christmas speaking?

If that's not the answer, I have absolutely no idea where to look anymore. The list of our suspects grows thin! ;)

Guinevere
10-16-2008, 01:03 PM
I'm quite sure it's not in Smith
What makes you so sure? ;)

It's a bit hard to spot, because I left out the beginning of this sentence, and the next sentence.
Here is the quote in its whole length:
"Ah yes. I ought to have been. I should have been, ---, but I was delayed ; and I have had matters to think of that put all else out of mind for a time. But I did not forget -------"

It should be easier to find now!

Estelyn Telcontar
10-17-2008, 06:16 AM
Aha!!* Thank you for the clues, both in giving more of the quote and in pointing me to the right work. It is of course Smith of Wootton Major, speaking to his son Ned concerning Tomling's birthday.

"kthksbai" (or similar spellings) is a "lolcat" expression. It does indeed mean OK, thanks, bye. And of course the grammar in my question, which would be incorrect for hoomans, is absolutely acceptable for lolcats. If you haven't come across them, check out the I Can Has Cheezburger (http://icanhascheezburger.com/) site for examples. It's one of my favourite places for a good laugh!
