Speaking to Niggle: 'We shall finish this evening,' said Parish one day. 'After that we will go for a really long walk.' Now that sounds like an excellent idea in lovely autumn weather like we're having right now! Maybe we'd find the Great Tree...
Guinevere
09-19-2005, 01:12 PM
Yes, well done, Esty!
(Lovely weather?! Perhaps on the mountains! :( Alas, here in the Swiss "Mittelland" we sit under tense "Hochnebel" - no sun at all and pretty cold.)
Estelyn Telcontar
09-19-2005, 03:09 PM
Well, in unfriendly weather like that maybe this is good advice: '---- -- --- ---- -- ---- ---?' .... '-- ---'-. --'- ---- ----------- -------- ----- -------- -- -------. --- ---- --- ----, --- ------ --- ----.
Guinevere
09-20-2005, 07:12 AM
Let's start with S's this time.

Guinevere
09-20-2005, 02:48 PM
Should I ask for a y now? ;)
But I think some N's would probably be more useful...
Estelyn Telcontar
09-20-2005, 11:26 PM
'---t -- --- --nt t- ---e ---?' .... '-e --n't. -t's ---e ------t---e st-n--n- st--- t--n--n- -- n-t--n-. T-- ---- --- --st, t-- --n--- --- ----.'

Guinevere
09-26-2005, 12:57 PM
I thought Tuor of Gondolin would have solved it in the mean time!!! ;) Since he didn't take his chance, I can't resist any longer:
What do you want to move for?" said the other toys. "We don't. It's more comfortable standing still thinking of nothing. The more you rest, the longer you live." The toys said it to Roverandom, of course, while he was in the shop-window.
The opposite of this advice would be: "Wer rastet, der rostet" !
Estelyn Telcontar
09-26-2005, 01:39 PM
Yes, that's right, Guinevere! I thought it's a cute quote, and we haven't had the toys as speakers yet! It's all yours.

The alphabet still has some clues to offer for this quote - anyone going to try before time's up?
Guinevere
10-10-2005, 03:47 AM
As far as I can see, the quote is:
"No one from the Outer Lands is supposed ever to come here; and few ever do now."
But I still haven't found from which of the Minor Works it is. Perhaps someone else will recognise it now?
Estelyn Telcontar
10-10-2005, 04:31 AM
The quote is correct, Guinevere! So far, so good - now, try to recall who does some unexpected traveling to unusual places...
Estelyn Telcontar
10-13-2005, 12:28 AM
...to quote a much beloved ( ) line from the movie: "Shall I get you a box?"
Clue: Not all those who wander are human.
Estelyn Telcontar
10-16-2005, 02:08 PM
Shall I give you the answer or just leave it a mystery and start a new quote?
Guinevere
10-16-2005, 02:25 PM
Heck, I kept hoping that someone of the other participants would eventually find it! (Where is our all-knowing wizard?!)
I am just not able to spot it skimming through the books. So I have given up.
But please do solve this mystery first before starting a new quote, Esty!

It was spoken by Uin, the whale, to Roverandom and the Mer-Dog, whom he had taken for a ride to forbidden territory, within sight of Faery. At this point of the tale, the children's story touches his Legendarium!

Why wait till morrow-year? I'll take it when me pleases.

You can't depend on mermaids, except for keeping their own secrets; they're better than oysters at that. The mer-dog, telling Roverandom of his adventures. Interestingly, one version that I have includes an amusing typo in this sentence - "they're better than oysters at chat". Quite the opposite meaning!
By the way, it was the word "oysters" that gave it away - it wasn't hard to figure out which work would contain that!

It's Smith's grandfather, Rider, before leaving Wootton Major for ever:
"Goodbye for now, Alf," he said. "I leave you to manage things as best you can, which is always very well. I expect it will turn out all right. If we meet again, I hope to hear all about it. ..."
(I wonder where he went, though... or does it mean he died? But how could he then meet the King of Faery again? There's much in this story that's mysterious to me!)
