(Or have a good pic of yourself... I've wanted to update my pic for ages, but no one has managed to take even an "okay" picture of me in the past few years... though, now I need a pic of myself for a school project, so if it's good it might end up on the photo page too...)

I know that feeling. Over the years, it's rare anyone has ever taken a decent picture of me. I was excited to finally do my senior photos last year- professional photographers can make anyone look awesome. Then I got my laptop, which has webcam. You can actually see yourself while take the picture so you know whether you'll look half decent or not. I've been playing with that gadget a lot lately.

Look at the first post, master 91. It's full of useful information that you will be tested on at the end of the year.

I just realised that the robot-look is soooo last year, so I had to change my pic :) This one was taken to show my new haircut to my girlfriend, but I thought it would be good enough for you too! It's not easy taking pictures of yourself using your phone, I promise you...

It's almost scary to see some people for real, your own inner picture of them is totally changed... Like seeing LotR as movies :) Some things are too far from your own view of them...

Were they paid well enough? :p

I've always had issues with professionals when it came to my school pictures. The problem is they don't have time and you don't really pay them, so it's one click and you're done. It might even turn out better if a monkey were to take your picture.

I endured twelve years of the horrifying "you only get one shot, so make it your best" school picture system. I consider my senior year the first time I faced a real photographer. Two to three hours with one of those guys and something's got to turn out good. Of course, professionals are expensive and only used for special occasions (unless your a model or actor). I know I won't be seeing one until my sister's wedding....

Yes, well. The poster is usually on my door but its being re-painted and so I had to move it. I couldn't be bothered putting it up properly and didn't notice it was in the picture until it was too late. Oh well.
With the redecorating my room is in a bit of a mess, but I just got a new camera today so I wanted to try it out regardless. :D

That's pretty cool picture, you look like a singer from the 60s. Maybe a folk singer?

Hookbill - is that the woman from McCalls/McColls/Martins in your picture, giving you some lip for daring to enter the shop and trouble her with wanting to buy a newspaper? It certainly reminds me of her...

Perhaps because if you tell fortunes with ordinary playing cards (light) blondes are usually represented by diamonds. Diamond herself seems to be more of a club type , possibly a heart depending on eye colour.... or you may have read Jostein Gaarder's Solitaire Mystery which uses these associations .... it is a fabulous book btw and I found it easier going than Sophies World...

Now I know why I said 'folk singer' - there is this (http://www.slipcue.com/music/international/celtic/artists/briggs.html) well-known picture of singer Anne Briggs (as far as Anne Briggs is known, I bet nobody else here knows who she is ;)) that's in a similar style!

Just wait Alatar.... if your girls (you have two girls, right?) are anything like my sister, in a few years time you'll have to STOP them from taking pictures. Of course, you probably won't be featured in any of those, for they will much rather take pictures of their friends, and if nothing else, themselves.

But I just HAVE to say that Morm is a lucky fellow... your family looks great in the picture. How old is the lil' one? she reminds me of my baby cousin, who is no longer so much of a baby.

When I did WW XXIIX, I must confess to looking at all the players' pictures to try to get some ideas for killing them (don't worry...the game is over. I know it's over.), and while viewing Lommy's picture, I discovered that she doesn't have pink hair. It's a sunbeam of some sort.

Just...wow, Lommy. I had always pictured you with pink hair.

I've been earning various fitness related certifications and have been attending workshops for others. Then I got quite ill, and then my grandmother passed away.

That is very good...... reminds me of when I showed my graduation photos to an older colleague who was a real pukka mem-sahib type and she said approvingly "oh you wore white gloves!" ..noooo those are my hands..... and I was merely "almost titian" (ie a bit ginger :p ).

Yes that's it. It is something that clearly skipped a generation since my parents could tan a bit , but my grannie had celtic skin and I got the premature grey gene from her too :(. I gave up trying to tan after a lot of freckles and some horrific sunburn and so have been a devotee of big hats and high factor for years. One advantage is that you spare yourself the ageing effects of the sun - and joy of joys I have found fake tan that isn't orange so can go barelegged in the summer

It does seem that a disproportionate number of us are "pale and interesting" - I wonder if it is because a tan was seen as desirable in RL but pale skin is regarded so positivesly in ME ? ;)

I too am extremely pale with lots of freckles and reddish-brown hair. My brother (HKF) is also quite pale, but less freckly and with brown hair that's so dark it's nearly black. We get it from our mom, who's a very pale and freckled redhead.

Just a note for the future... if you are sending me an update photo, please tell me that's what it is. Otherwise I'll think it's your first submission (because my memory doesn't always serve me nor do I always have time to look up who has submitted and who hasn't)... this should help eliminate the issue of duplications.

Also, if you could keep update photos at a minimum that would be most helpful, as my time is quite short lately.

You took the words right out of my mouth. About myself though, not you. :pSee, thing is, about a week after that shot was taken, I cut my hair short. It grew to about chin length over the summer and then I cut it boyishly short. I occasionally wore it in a faux-hawk. I changed the style but kept it short, so it was boyishly short and messy up until about a week ago when I buzzed it off in a dorm bathroom with a friend. I do still have the hat... We had a spontaneous photo adventure in the art studio last night. This shot was taken of me dancing, no music necessary. Ignoring the photographer. Welcome to my world.

Fea, your artistry is truly astounding sometimes.Thank you, but I give my friend full credit. We had two cameras and one model. By the end of the night, they'd convinced me to model instead while they played with light and angles, we'd filled two memory cards, and a few gems like this one showed up. I'm toying with resurrecting my deviantart account to post shots ranging from landscapes to artistic nudes. We're prolific and not half bad. But like I said, credit for this shot goes to K. Hookbill moans like a very old man
His jackets too tight and his boots are tan
He can't skip far since he got fatter
His boots aren't right and he's mad as a hatter.

Hooky's off home to his pretty Goldigga
She's very pretty with a really nice figure
Down by the canal, that's where he caught her
Silly old Hooky and The Glibber-womans daughter.

Old Hooky smiles but he's not happy
Goldigga's broody so he has to wear a nappy
That's why he walks a little bit funny
So he skips along like a frightened bunny.

Sorry Hooky couldn't resist, I will pay my due at Oxonmoot :) ;), make sure you bring your costume to Oxonmoot.

Of course, one could question whether such Sindarin or snow berries would be suitable for a child who grew up in the Old Forest. Now, willows don't produce berries, but there are holly berries and mistletoe, to say nothing of the myriad berries available in The Shire. Why, I think I shall have to refer people to a solid source if they wish to know what a bethberry looks like.

mrs. alatar has a great eye for design--the great shirts almost outshine the gorgeous kids--but why are you hiding your shirt behind the kids?
Thanks for your kind words. It was a rough weekend, and so I was taking advantage of the moment to sit.

And does she get one?
As a rule, no, she never makes herself one. As our family has grown, the dog no longer gets a shirt, and this year, the kit that she bought didn't have enough rubber bands, and so the kids' shirts look less spirally and more circular. Mrs. alatar said that next year she has to buy two.

PS. I hope you had a great Father's Day, with some sleep and the only hallucinations being those of celebrating fatherhood. ;)
Thanks; not much sleep, though, but why would some greeting card industry-invented day be any different? ;) Your mention of Father's Day makes me think about how Tolkien loved his kids, and how he wrote TH and LotR (somewhat) to entertain his children. That is so cool. And so...

Fathers, I know that you would face down a winged Balrog, or jump in front of that dragon-sounding locomotive that mysteriously chugs along in the Shire, or even cross the Gorgoroth barefoot if that's what it took to save your children and their mother, but I'm guessing that the opportunities to do so may be few and far between. So while you sit waiting with the endurance of Hurin, take a moment and put down the remote, turn off the game, postpone that golf outing or yardwork that is just so important to finish - even log off the Downs  (until they're asleep) - and pick up a ball, a doll or even better a book and sit with your kids and focus on them. Read them the Hobbit; play LotR (light sabres serve as Anduril and Glamdring) or make up stories about the day-to-day life of Galadriel.

When that's done, help out their mother - clean up something, be the first one up when someone's crying at night, get up and get them breakfast, eat last at dinner - you said that you'd be on the front line for the Dagor Dagorath, and so waiting to eat, losing a little sleep, and doing without a few comforts surely doesn't even compare.

"Emotions!" alatar almost falls getting off his high horse, and goes to get his dictionary to see if his avatar is next to the words hypocrite, sanctimonious, and banned.

There's a certain trick to it. I could teach you, if you like. :D
If you mean teaching me how to look like picture #2, (1) I can look haggard without any assistance (it's genetic), or (2) if you hadn't noticed, there's no way with my current hair style that I'd ever be able to accomplish said feat, regardless of training (and long hair takes up time that I'd rather use drinking coffee) or (3) learning to spin my head completely around might sound like a good thing, but, as a parent, sometimes it's better not to turn around and to just keep walking. ;)

Fea, I'm reminded of the commercial for those little teeny breath mints where the woman juggles a bunch on her tongue. Your picture could be inserted in the last 5 seconds of the ad with the tag line, "Now in pink lemonade!"

If I were you, I'd be sending your photo now. And when you make it big, just now and then remember us little people.
