Brin shaved her hair as part of a fundraiser for St. Baldrick's, an agency which raises money to help fund childhood cancer research. She raised $700, mostly by being really annoying and weedling those of us on Facebook to support her. Not. :D

That's basically the gist of it. *points to link in signature for further detail* I wanted to try something bold for a good cause and received an amazing amount of support in the process...much of which came from fellow BDers (love you guys!). It took awhile to get used to my new look and feel confident about it in public, but thanks partially to the warm weather that allowed me to shed the hats and scarves, I finally found that confidence at the end of last week. Right now I couldn't more satisfied about my appearance...I'm surprised to discover I'm happier without the hair than I ever was with it. I guess you could call it a liberating experience. It'll almost be sad when it does grow back.

Two students at my college recently died of leukemia. I never met either of them, but I read their stories along with the stories of so many others, and it's a sobering reminder as to why I feel so strongly about this cause. It's awful to see the lives of so many cut short, especially children. I am proud to do what I can to change that. Compared to what they must go through, sacrificing my hair is nothing and I would do it again in a heartbeat. :cool:

I myself did the same thing for the World's Greatest Shave for the Leukemia foundation here in Oz. Of course I had a bit less to cut unless you count my face, and didn't raise as much $, but its all good.

For anyone who may be curious, I'm keeping track of my hair growth in this album. (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2100212&id=13005338&l=4242adb792) While I'd love to keep my hair shorn, I'm graduating soon and then job hunting, so it's really not the right time to keep that sort of style. Plus, I want to do this again and donate my hair, so I figured I might as well enjoy observing how my hair grows out. It's been a month now since I've shaved and already my hair is just under a half inch long.

I've known several people who got sun-burned this way hiking across a glacier. Mind you, this only works if it is warm enough to stand around on a bunch of snow without a coat. Perhaps in a few months though...

I wanted to do this a long time ago, but I didn't have any recent pictures at hand. Finally, when I have lots of work to do but don't want to get at it, I went to the computer and found about the only picture of myself that I still didn't delete.

This is quite an old picture (3 years old, I believe), and not one of my best ones. Now my hair is longer and darker, and I'm of course much prettier. No. Not really. :p

GLAD TO BE BACK!

As of two days ago, we finally have high-speed internet!!
It feels wonderful to be part of technology again. dial-up in the country became unbearable...couldn't download, couldn't see pictures or videos, or you-tube, or facebook, and have been gone from the barrows far too long :o

now those that knew me awhile ago can finally see what i (and me beautiful family) look like-i'm the mum.

i look forward to haunting more often, meeting new friends, catching up with old friends and joined the newest wolf game, good heavens, i can't believe it's in the hundreds!! :eek:

Being it is Tigerlily Gamgee's birthday, it got me to looking at this thread she created. I guess I was surprised that the photo page still worked. Twenty years ago when that pic of me was taken, I had hair ... long hair ... still flew my 1970's freak flag even though it was getting a bit sparse on top. The greybearding was well underway, and it was a totally different life back then.

Now, I give myself a #1 buzzcut every six weeks, and the greybearding has progressed to whitebeard. I have a different wife who I love very much (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/member.php?u=1787), I live on a different continent, and Life is Good!
