S please

(btw, I'll be away for a week)

Estelyn Telcontar
07-22-2006, 12:43 AM
-- -as --- --s- -a-- - ---- -a--, an- --a-'s sa--n- so-----n-.

(I hope your time off means vacation, Guinevere! Have a good time - we'll miss you and look forward to having you back again soon.)

Tuor in Gondolin
07-24-2006, 12:56 PM
"e"s?

Estelyn Telcontar
07-24-2006, 03:03 PM
-- -as --e -es- -a-e - e-e- -a-e, an- --a-'s sa--n- so-e---n-.

Guinevere
07-29-2006, 02:17 PM
I'm back from vacation. :)
(thanks for the good wishes, Esty! I was in Italy with my family, it was almost too hot, but fun, nevertheless!)

and now I can see, even without T , that this must be Nokes speaking to Alf:

"It was the best cake I ever made, and that's saying something."

Estelyn Telcontar
07-29-2006, 02:54 PM
Awww, you didn't want T with your cake? ;)

Nice to have you back, Guinevere - as you can see, it's slow going when you're not around! Glad to hear that you nad a nice vacation!

Oh, and you're quite right, of course. Carry on!

Guinevere
07-31-2006, 03:23 PM
:) Thank you, Esty!

Try this one:

"-/ ------/ ----/ -------/ ----/ -/ ------/ -----/ ----/ -------/ --/ -----/ ---/ --------/ ------/ ----/ ----/!"

Estelyn Telcontar
08-03-2006, 01:58 AM
Let's start off with a vowel this time: "I", please.

Guinevere
08-03-2006, 07:56 AM
Voilà!

"I/ ------/ ----/ -------/ ----/ -/ -i----/ -----/ ----/ -------/ --/ -----/ -i-/ --------/ ------/ ----/ ----/!"

Estelyn Telcontar
08-03-2006, 11:45 AM
Hmmm, still one single lettered word - let's try "A", please.

Tuor in Gondolin
08-03-2006, 12:13 PM
"o"s, please.

Guinevere
08-03-2006, 01:42 PM
- only vowels - that's a novelty in this thread! :D

"I/ --o---/ -a--/ --o----/ --a-/ a/ -i-a--/ -o---/ -a--/ -a-a---/ -o/ -a---/ -i-/ --o-----/ ------/ --a-/ --a-/!"

Estelyn Telcontar
08-03-2006, 01:57 PM
Ah, that's a good start, though it does take consonants to really find the words: S, please.

Guinevere
08-03-2006, 02:22 PM
"I/ s-o---/ -a--/ --o----/ --a-/ a/ -i-a--/ -o---/ -a--/ -a-a---/ -o/ -a---/ -is/ --o-s--s/ ------/ --a-/ --a-/!"

Estelyn Telcontar
08-04-2006, 06:02 AM
T-time, isn't it?!

Guinevere
08-04-2006, 08:45 AM
:D plenty of T for you!

"I/ s-o---/ -a--/ t-o---t/ t-at/ a/ -i-a--/ -o---/ -a--/ -a-a---/ to/ -at--/ -is/ t-o-s--s/ --tt--/ t-a-/ t-at/!"

Estelyn Telcontar
08-04-2006, 09:56 AM
Got it! A very nice quote for a patchworker - though I must say, I am pickier about my color combinations than Artaxerxes... 'I should have thought that a wizard could have managed to patch his trousers better than that!' said Roverandom.

Guinevere
08-04-2006, 10:03 AM
:D I knew the T would do the trick! :)

Estelyn Telcontar
08-04-2006, 03:02 PM
Here's a new one: ---- --- -- ---- ---- --- ----- ----- ---, -- --- ---- -- ----? ------ --- ---- --- -----.

Guinevere
08-05-2006, 12:23 PM
Let's start with A

Estelyn Telcontar
08-05-2006, 12:44 PM
-a-- --- -- --a- --a- --- ----- ----- -a-, -- --- ---- -- ----? ------ --- -a-- --- --a--.

Guinevere
08-05-2006, 03:01 PM
Hm... H perhaps ?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-05-2006, 03:03 PM
Ha-- --- -- --a- -ha- -h- ----- ---h- -a-, -- -h- ---- -- -h--? ------ --- ha-- h-- --a--.

Good choice!

Guinevere
08-05-2006, 03:14 PM
http://www.travar.de/Templates/Webprojekt/images/idea.gif "Aha !" indeed!

"Have you no fear what the queen might say, if she knew of this? Unless you have her leave."

The elf maiden (in reality the queen of Faery) to Smith.

Estelyn Telcontar
08-05-2006, 03:26 PM
Wow, fantastic! Great job, Guinevere!

Guinevere
08-06-2006, 01:57 PM
Thank you, Esty! That was just lucky guessing of the first 6 words. :D

Here's an invitation (might be from me ;) )

"---/ ----/ --/ ---/ ---- _-----/. ---/ ----/ ----/ --/ ---/ ----/. ----! ---/ ----/ ----/ ---/ --------/."

Estelyn Telcontar
08-07-2006, 12:49 PM
Well, let's try "T" first...

Guinevere
08-07-2006, 12:54 PM
One T for you

"---/ ----/ --/ --t/ ---- _-----/. ---/ ----/ ----/ --/ ---/ ----/. ----! ---/ ----/ ----/ ---/ --------/."

Estelyn Telcontar
08-08-2006, 07:25 AM
Adding my standard favorite letter to the list: S, please.

Guinevere
08-08-2006, 08:16 AM
"---/ s---/ -s/ --t/ ---- _-----/. ---/ ----/ ----/ --/ ---/ ----/. ----! ---/ ----/ ---s/ ---/ s-------/."

Tuor in Gondolin
08-08-2006, 12:04 PM
"o"s?

Guinevere
08-08-2006, 01:30 PM
Good choice!

"O--/ s---/ -s/ -ot/ ---- _-----/. O--/ -o--/ o---/ --/ ---/ ----/. -o--! -o-/ -o--/ ---s/ ---/ s-------/."

Mirkgirl
08-09-2006, 07:49 AM
How about N?

Tuor in Gondolin
08-09-2006, 11:12 AM
"r"s, please.

Guinevere
08-09-2006, 12:52 PM
"O-r/ s---/ -s/ not/ ---- _----n/. On-/ -or-/ on--/ --/ ---/ ---r/. -o--! -or/ -o-r/ ---s/ -r-/ s-----n-/."

and welcome to the game, Mirkgirl! :)

Tuor in Gondolin
08-10-2006, 12:05 PM
"y"s?

Guinevere
08-10-2006, 01:26 PM
"O-r/ s---/ -s/ not/ ---- _----n/. On-/ -or-/ on-y/ --/ --y/ ---r/. -o--! -or/ yo-r/ --ys/ -r-/ s-----n-/."

Tuor in Gondolin
08-15-2006, 11:04 AM
"u"s, please.

Guinevere
08-15-2006, 11:54 AM
"Our/ s---/ -s/ not/ -u-- _----n/. On-/ -or-/ on-y/ --/ --y/ ---r/. -o--! -or/ your/ --ys/ -r-/ s-----n-/."

Tuor in Gondolin
08-23-2006, 12:37 PM
"h's"?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2006, 01:22 PM
...and A, please.

Guinevere
08-23-2006, 01:42 PM
"Our/ sh--/ -s/ not/ -u-- _-a--n/. On-/ -or-/ on-y/ --/ -ay/ --ar/. -o--! -or/ your/ -ays/ ar-/ s-----n-/."

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2006, 01:56 PM
Finally! I located it after figuring out that the second word could be "ship": Our ship is not full-laden.
One more only we may bear.
Come! For your days are speeding.

Is that an invitation to a cruise? ;)

Guinevere
08-23-2006, 02:14 PM
Yes, but only on Lake Zürich :)

Estelyn Telcontar
08-23-2006, 09:37 PM
This one could tell us something about our favorite barrow: ;) ---'-- -----_------- -- ---- ------ ---- --- -- ---- ---- --------.

Guinevere
08-24-2006, 01:07 PM
O please

Estelyn Telcontar
08-24-2006, 02:10 PM

Guinevere
08-24-2006, 02:15 PM
How about R ?

Estelyn Telcontar
08-24-2006, 02:42 PM
-o-'r- -----_------- -o ---- ------ -ro- --- -- ---- -o-- --r-----.

Guinevere
08-27-2006, 01:18 PM
and now some T, please! :)

(PS: I like your signature, Esty! Is it from one of the letters?)

Tuor in Gondolin
08-28-2006, 11:30 AM
"e"s, please.

Estelyn Telcontar
08-28-2006, 01:53 PM
-o-'re --t--_----te- to te-- --e--- -ro- -e- -- t--- -o-- --r--e--.

My signature quote comes from Tolkien's comments on Smith of Wootton Major, included in the extended edition of the book, edited by Verlyn Flieger.

Guinevere
08-28-2006, 02:25 PM
:) Tídwald to Torhthelm:

"You're witch-sighted
to tell fiends from men in this foul darkness."

(@Esty: I've seen that book in my English bookshop, but it seemed a bit expensive... :( But if you can tell me that it's worth it, I might buy it.)

Estelyn Telcontar
08-29-2006, 02:46 AM
Absolutely correct, as always, Guinevere! I don't know how you do it...

(Yes, the book is expensive because it's hardback; I have no idea if it will be released in paperback. It's worth the price to me because I find the additional material very interesting. Tolkien's essay, not published elsewhere as far as I know, is wonderful to read!)

Guinevere
08-29-2006, 01:41 PM
I don't know how you do it...
Perhaps I'm witch-sighted ;) :D (Honestly: it's just lucky guessing!)

"----------/ -----------/! -/ ---/ -------/ ----/ ---/ ---/ -------/ --/."

Estelyn Telcontar
08-29-2006, 01:44 PM
"Let's start from the very beginning..." Somehow I'm in a "Sound of Music" mood! At any rate, let's try the first letter of the alphabet: A, please.

Guinevere
08-29-2006, 01:50 PM
"A---------/ -a---------/! -/ ---/ --a----/ --a-/ ---/ a--/ -------/ a-/."

Estelyn Telcontar

Guinevere
08-30-2006, 01:42 PM

http://www.travar.de/Templates/Webprojekt/images/idea.gif This wonderful compliment is what Niggle wished some indefinite friend and admirer of his painting would say. I love the continuation (which unfortunately no one says to me either :( ) : Absolutely magnificent! I see exactly what you are getting at. Do get on with it, and don't bother about anything else! We will arrange for a public pension, so that you need not.

Guinevere
09-02-2006, 01:18 PM
Yes, well done, Esty! (You did use the continuation once as a "palantir" :) )

Football, eh? Well, let's start with a T, please.

Guinevere

(Being European, I mean what you call soccer in the US)

Tuor in Gondolin

Yup. That's what I thought. :)
Btw, has Switzerland ever done anything in World Cup
or European tournaments? Isn't the population majority
German, and Germany, of course, is always good in the sport.
Also, have you seen the National Geographic feature on football/soccer?

Oh, and how about "h"s?

Guinevere

Estelyn Telcontar

There aren't too many stories with a "hat", but it did take awhile for me to search through Roverandom, Farmer Giles, and Tom Bombadil till I finally found the quote in Smith of Wootton Major: Nokes... had always wished to become Master Cook...
...he used to put on the tall white hat and look at himself in a polished frying pan and say: 'How do you do, Master. That hat suits you properly, might have been made for you. I hope things go well with you.'

Guinevere
11-11-2006, 07:07 AM
Sorry to have wasted so much of your time... ;)

Hmmm, the end is almost certainly "to the sea", and it looks like two lines of poetry - but I can't find it in the poems I've searched so far. Am I right with that suspicion?

At any rate, let's have another letter; maybe that will help. R, please.

Ah!! (insert smiley with lightbulb here) It's in the Tom Bombadil poems, from "Perry-The-Winkle": The Lonely Troll he sat on a stone
and sang a mournful lay:
'O why, O why must I live on my own
in the hills of Faraway?
My folk are gone beyond recall
and take no thought of me;
alone I'm left, the last of all
from Weathertop to the Sea.'

It's Farmer Giles speaking: 'Hey, lads!' said he. 'Come back! I have a job for you, and good wages while this packet lasts.'

(Though the last word was complete with the choice of 'L', that wasn't the telling clue - it was the word "lads"! That isn't used too often in Tolkien's works, and the "likely lads" occurred to me immediately.)

Guinevere
11-21-2006, 12:27 PM
Well done, Esty! :) with only so few letters
