Ravens? I don't think they are quadrapeds... that would be more like a Hyppogriff... ;)
Is it a person?
Mithalwen
06-10-2011, 05:17 AM
I know it was just the hesitartion over your response to quadruped.. I had a silly idea you might count a wing as a ped ;)
Mithalwen
06-10-2011, 05:19 AM
Person... oh goodness what did I choose.
No not a person,
Galadriel55
06-10-2011, 08:16 AM
I know it was just the hesitartion over your response to quadruped.. I had a silly idea you might count a wing as a ped ;)
The hesitation was because I didn't remember if it stated directy that Smaug had four legs. Maybe he had six, os something - he's a dragon! He's made up! But then Glaurung had 4, so I thought there's nothing exotic with Smaug either...
Is it a living creature?
Mithalwen

Ah.. right . No not a living thing.
Galadriel55

Mithalwen
06-11-2011, 10:30 AM
Not Aiglos... would that be First age...? Maybe I guess the Noldor made stuff to last...
Galadriel55
06-11-2011, 10:35 AM
I wasn't sure when it was made, but Elvish things do last! Sting is a great example!
Is it... Belthronding?
Mithalwen
06-11-2011, 11:09 AM
It is not Beleg's bow....
Galadriel55
06-11-2011, 11:15 AM

Galadriel55
06-11-2011, 11:48 AM
Narsil?
Wasn't it made by Telchar=Dwarf?
Mithalwen
06-11-2011, 11:51 AM
Not Fingon's bow.
And it still isn't a sword ;) so not Narsil regardless of who constructed it.
Galadriel55
06-11-2011, 11:55 AM
Hmmmm....mmmmm.....mmmmm.....
Is it a bow at all?

Galadriel55
06-11-2011, 01:49 PM
Spears, spears...
The javelin that Eol threw at Aredhel?
Mithalwen
06-11-2011, 02:11 PM
Yay!!!! Correct All yours... and thanks re the sig... I heard it recently and it amused me.
Galadriel55
06-11-2011, 02:20 PM
Ok, I have something...
I never really got the difference between spears and javelins, except that spears tend to be big, and javelins vary dramatically in size...
That's a nice siggy, with many ways to twist it. Like, how did the chicken get to the other side if it didn't cross anything? :p
Mithalwen
06-11-2011, 03:05 PM
Well it did cross something... it was just it got back to the starting point Isuppose.
Well I know that the Australian Koories use throwing spears for hunting but I assumed a javelin was more like those used in modern field athletics and was thrown whereas a spear you might well hang onto - especially as a weapon rather than a hunting instrument. I can't imagine a javelin being the most useful thing for war since in that situation it is single use and a bow can be fired more economically.
Anyway

Mithalwen
06-13-2011, 11:30 AM
OK by unique to middle earth I mean say the Girdle of Melian or the osanwe kenta or the straight road as opposed to telepathy or the north wind or foresight

OK by unique to middle earth I mean say the Girdle of Melian or the osanwe kenta or the straight road as opposed to telepathy or the north wind or foresight
Ok then... I still think it's not ME-tied. It could be... not exactly anywhere, but it doesn't have to be in ME.

LadyBrooke
06-13-2011, 02:18 PM
The choice of the Half-Elven?....but I wouldn't consider that more common then the Doom of Mandos....so...confused...
Galadriel55
06-13-2011, 02:20 PM
Not the choice of the half-elven. Although I do recall some peredhil being involved. :)
The choice that you mention is only for specific people (Half-Elves: not too common). The thing that I have in mind could apply to anybody, although as I said many characters don't "feel" it while others do.

I feel like I'm monopolizing the guessing, but the Sea Longing perhaps? It's something felt at least....
Yes!!!:D I was looking for "the call of the Sea", or the Voice, but Longing is also acceptible.
Please proceed! :)
Mithalwen
06-13-2011, 03:56 PM
Oh I thought sea-longing then discounted it and I can't think why... I think I thought of it only in connection with Elvses... anyway nice to have a new chooser - I can certainly use a breather...

Oh I thought sea-longing then discounted it and I can't think why... I think I thought of it only in connection with Elvses...
That's what I also thought, but then I decided that... why not Men as well? Like Aldarion...
When my turn comes around again, I won't choose anything that unexplainable.
Is it a person, Brooke?

There's something magical about any kind of water, not only the sea, even swamp water (although that's likely to be magical in a bad sense)
I should shut up now and not hyjack the thread.

Bath water is good - Rupert Brooke wrote of "the benison of hot water" but the best is a sig Rune had for a while which said that the cure for anything was salt water - sweat, tears, the sea.... okies hijack over. Though Gally dear you will soon overtake the Saucepan Man!

Nimloth? Since she's Celeborn's niece, and Celeborn is Elmo's great-grandson or something... that would be quite distant.

Ok, it's not a "life form", but rather "life forms", if that makes any sense. However, this one is more alive than others of its kind. :)

Something that is not really there (physically)?
Mithalwen
06-17-2011, 04:56 PM
Aii bad choice.. this is going to be a bit too hard philosophically and scientifically. It the way it is presented in the story it has no physical form (though it could be given one) but it can be sensed which may presuppose a sort of physical existance. I bet you wish you hadn't asked. *brain aching and muttering about the phenomenon v. noumenon*
Galadriel55
06-17-2011, 05:00 PM
Is it specific to a certain place?
Mithalwen
06-17-2011, 05:13 PM
Not limited but it "appears"in the book at a certain place if that helps.
Galadriel55
06-17-2011, 05:21 PM
Is it a "proper noun" (has a name, begins with a capital letter, etc)?

I can't help thinking about the Girdle of Melian. Is that it? If not, I have some other ideas...
Mithalwen
06-18-2011, 06:54 AM
I would class the Girdle of Melian as location specific - though presumable Melian could exercise her power anywhere,
So, no it isn't.
Galadriel55
06-18-2011, 07:00 AM

Galadriel55
06-18-2011, 07:32 AM
Ah, ok. I've been thinking about Lammoth, but that cuts it short. I think I'll narrow it down a bit more...
Is it made/activated by an Elf?
Mithalwen
06-18-2011, 07:46 AM
Originally made by an elf/elves but not in the form we see it in the books. Not "activated" by elf in story - but no doubt done so at other times but probably in original form.
Mithalwen
06-18-2011, 07:48 AM
Lammoth... not a bad idea but ...
Galadriel55
06-18-2011, 07:54 AM

Now I keep coming back to the writing on the Doors of Moria, but the letters have a physical form, so I'm perfectly confused. :)
Mithalwen
06-18-2011, 08:13 AM
It is language related. Couldn't be more so really. I dont' think you are far off. The thing could have a physical form but doesn't have a single specific one.

06-18-2011, 03:39 PM

Why not? It was a nice one! :D
