We've now got a workable cast for the P&A animation! I'm going to put together a story board and take another stab at the script before contacting the actors for the first scene about doing a test!
Hopefully, in a week or two, we'll have something we can look at.

In other news, I've redrafted the script for P&A and will soon be sending it off to the cast, and once everyone is happy with it we'll organise a read-through!! Exciting times, people! Exciting times.

Of course there's meat in the paper. It's just spelled "ODDWEN INVESTIGATES NEWSPAPER CORRUPTION". Also, my paper was delivered this morning wrapped around some meat. Though it may just be part of my payment...er, experiment.

It has come to this reader's mind that our esteemed Downer, although renowned far & wide for its investigative and creative journalism, still lacks one vital ingredient of a distinguished newspaper. It has its own comic strip, which has attracted a huge and growing fanbase over the years, but isn't there still something missing? Something something to do with words... something black... white... and chequered...
This reader holds that problems should be solved by those who notice them. He has therefore set to work immediately and is proud to present to you the first installment of the
BARROW-DOWNS CROSSWORD PUZZLE!

The letters in the green squares, arranged in the correct order, spell out a section of the Downs where no servant of Morgoth dare set his foot.
The solution will be revealed next week. The first Downer to PM me with a complete correct solution before then wins a 100% vegetable cement pizza autographed by RoboTolkien himself. With meat.
PS. Staff of The Downer are of course hors concours. Sorry.

Random: one of the "blank spots" I had there was "Dwarven city in Finland". Okay, I haven't really stopped to think about that; when I could not think of the answer immediately, I just brushed it aside with "I'll return to it when I actually start solving the problematic ones". Of course now it suddenly totally randomly dawned upon me what is the answer. I think somebody should beat me with a shovel or something. How stupid can one be? *facepalm* :o

Right then. Week #270's headline story was based on a true story. For the past week I've been bored between supposed to be doing things and have been satisfying my curiosity by going through each and every Paper counting how many times each person has been mentioned.
Two hundred and seventy papers. One hundred and fifteen separate people.
I counted any appearance in a single paper as one appearance. I did not count you if you were not mentioned or referred to by name. There were a few unlabeled pictures of Rune, a couple of Kath, one of Esgallhugwen, Rikae, Mac, Lhuna, me, and Valier, and multiple mentions of an "Editor" in the mix if you want to be 100% perfect like the Downer always is. It is possible that Lhuna and Lommy may be slightly inaccurate because I can't read my own writing sometimes.

I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious...

If it's something as obscure as that (and by "that" I mean that as far as I know every name in REB has like 10 different parody names, so it's pretty much impossible to find anything there) I'd either kill Pitch or myself. :D
Hmm, if we're already dead...
But I've made progress with another word. And I had a great idea for 19 down, just to find that it's 2 letters too long. :/

It isn't really so very obscure in the end, in fact, it is about as obscure as anything else. Like with all things, once you get it, you will be like: "d'uh! So obvious! I am so stupid!" (No joking. You will say that. I can tell you that with 100% certainity. I have done that myself :) )
Eonwe, I didn't know you were doing this at all! :) And Legate - I think this was to be expected... ;)
Not really. I mean, I had serious problems with 7. For a long long time, I had no freaking idea what it was referring to, even after I managed to guess the word based on pure logic. I could have very well still have been out here and not knowing anything, had I not been able to conjecture the word in the first place.

It isn't really so very obscure in the end, in fact, it is about as obscure as anything else. Like with all things, once you get it, you will be like: "d'uh! So obvious! I am so stupid!" (No joking. You will say that. I can tell you that with 100% certainity. I have done that myself )
Yeah... you're right... (no sarcasm intended)
Not really.
Yes really. (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=10582) :p
I mean, I had serious problems with 7. For a long long time, I had no freaking idea what it was referring to, even after I managed to guess the word based on pure logic. I could have very well still have been out here and not knowing anything, had I not been able to conjecture the word in the first place.
I guessed that one yesterday! I feel so clever. :p After flipping through all kinds of nonesense solutions I finally had the sense to open a thesaurus that gave me the right answer at a glance. :) I'm having serious trouble with 13, 8, and 19 though. Ugh.

You don't have 8? I wonder how did you interpretate 7, then.
But this is maybe time for some short feedback for Pitch - actually, I did not understand the question at "7" properly in the first place, to me, it was formulated in a really unclear way. That said, of course I had problems guessing the answer anyway, but I was not able to figure out what actually the question says in the first place. I thought that "time of day when 8 downs are the most active" refers to some time of the day, when some eight 'Downs are most active (as in: there are eight Barrow-mounds somewhere, and they are active only at some part of the day). It did not really connect to me with the other examples being all around. It seemed really confusing to me, not sure how it seemed to others, but given what G55 just said... it is obvious how you meant it when looking back, but not sure how well formulated it is in the beginning. Well, that's probably the only thing that really did not 100% "click in" after I had learned the answer :)

I got it. Before any of you others.
However, I used a word on #6 that's basically a synonym to the correct answer. They were equally long and ended with the same letter. Only the letter in green was different. Which means I lost my cement pizza to two upstarts. Grrr!

But yeah, I suppose. I only gave it a quick glance until yesterday, when I decided to actually do it properly. Which is lucky, considering Legate's timing.

I was wondering why wouldn't you get the prize since you said you had it. But then that makes me wonder what other word could you have used instead of the real one. (But, let's not maybe spoil that for those who are still working on it. Also so that they can make the same mistake as you did or something ;) ) But hey, you can still get a cement... cookie, or whatnot. I can share a bit of my pizza, if it came to that, to be fair.
But yeah, I suppose. I only gave it a quick glance until yesterday, when I decided to actually do it properly. Which is lucky, considering Legate's timing.

Sorry, I forgot about that. It's just that unlike Legate, Agan, TGEW, and myself you didn't talk about it that much. :)
You don't have 8? I wonder how did you interpretate 7, then.
Well, at first I also thought that it refers to eight barrows that are active at a certain point of day. But then....
And, knowing the question for 8 and having some ideas about at least the end of the word (though I'm not at all certain that it is correct thinking)... and then, there aren't that many "times of day" that fit. Elimination from there.
However, now that you asked me, I started doubting my answer again...
(If you're curious about what my answer is, I can PM it to you, since you know it anyways... :))
But I have to disagree with what you said to Pitch. I like that clue, even though I'm not sure about the answer.

Yes, you did... almost. Now claim your quarter before you get ninja'd by yet another one.
If it's something as obscure as that (and by "that" I mean that as far as I know every name in REB has like 10 different parody names, so it's pretty much impossible to find anything there) I'd either kill Pitch or myself.
Obscure? REB? That classic of BD Roleplaying, that timeless masterpiece of parodistic writing, obscure? *harrumph* You need to broaden your literary education, young lady.
It isn't really so very obscure in the end, in fact, it is about as obscure as anything else.
Indeed, once you've figured out where to look, it should jump at you right off the page.

Feedback appreciated. Honestly, with all the other cross-references to "across" and "down" in the clues, it didn't occur to me that somebody might read "8 downs" as "8 barrow-mounds" in this case rather than "plural of the word in vertical column No.8" - I would think that's standard usage in English crossword puzzles. But I'm interested in hearing other peoples' opinion on that - preferably after I've posted the solution, when everyone's on the same page.
Agk! Another part of the Downs that I know literally nothing about.
Why are there questions related to WW on this thing? D: There are some Downers who still refuse to play WW.
You know, hard as it may seem to believe, there is a world out there beyond the pages of The Downer.;) (That said, a thorough perusal of the works of our esteemed editor is always time well spent.)

These are the answers, regardless of what Pitch and his crossword say: 8 down - laptop. 19 down - Amon Fridge. 13 across - East-west corner of the 3rd map. There!
Edit: I think I got 13... even though I don't get how it works, it's the only one that fits...And yeah, I could have though of that earlier....

KALIMAC CHRISTMAS, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT
Of late, Yule time is not always a happy time in the four farthings of The Shire. Traditional Hobbit traditions dictate that the tiny hobbit children stay up all night with clubs to keep the legendary figure known as Sando Clausefoot from eating their Yule Breakfast. Most hobbit children fall asleep early on, while parents leave nibble marks in all of the puddings to teach their children some sort of lesson in home security. All this has changed with the arrival of a Big Person calling himself "Sharkey Clause". He is said to send his elves out in wagons to cut down trees and collect toys from all the good boys and girls.
We tried to get a statement from one of his elves, but were spat on and told to stop asking questions as it was on the List as "not allowed". This was ridiculous, as we had checked the List beforehand to make sure. Upon a second checking, the rule was indeed there, sloppily written in pencil. We then tried to get a statement from Sharkey Clause himself, but were chased away while the old man screamed out "Yule Pay!" at our fleeing forms.
"I just can't understand it," says local character Gaffer Gamgee. "Maybe his weskit is two sizes too small."

The Downer would like to assure its readers that we have a very good explanation for the past two weeks hiatus. So here are the reasons our staff haven't been putting out new content;
We got freaked out by last year's solar eclipse, and barricaded ourselves in an underground bunker, where to this day we await the end of the world.
Either that, or we're trapped beneath a pile of unsold P&A t-shirts.
But then we discovered that the Downer was just a figment of our imagination - an imagination long since shredded by our chronic twin addictions to strong alcohol and horse painkillers.
We'd written the instructions on how to update the site on a marzipan wafer, which was erroneously swallowed by a clown.
Then the rozzers discovered our illegal whale ovary removing factory, and dragged us off to the cells.
So, without further delay, here is the newest issue of the Downer. With a brand new look to hide the fact that we have no new content.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
To whom it may consume:
I have been told that your tabloid has a "new look". Well, I actually haven't been told of this "new look", but I did manage to read the previous post that indicated this was the case. But I am not writing to complain about this alleged "new look"; on the contrary, I have an issue with the "old look".
Since I cannot even recall what the "old look" looked like with any specificity, how then do I know that this "new look" isn't just the "old look", or merely a look that was, in fact, around previous to the supposed "old look" -- a "recycled older look", if you will?
Speaking metaphysically, what is a "look" anyway? Since appearances can be deceiving, and since your paper has never had any depth in the first place, I do not see the point of renaming a skimpy veneer covering an empty shell. Replacing a blank facade does not alter empty air.
In conclusion, I strongly suggest you eliminate the "new look" as well as the "old look", and opt for a "don't look now". That way, I will not have to concern myself with changes I know nothing about regarding a tabloid I never read. I do not like to think of things that I do not think about!

In fact, they actually said "we'll hit the stores and if they still stand, we hit them again". Originally, the intention was to publish also electronic version, but only before the person responsible for it managed to electrocute himself with it. So you have to do with the hard copy. It might be hard to get, but then again, if it's worth it for you...
In any case, Phantom, as for the advertisement you have provided, in the immortal words of Cpt. Solo: Thank you. Thank you very much.

Some of the Finnish terms used are quite interesting indeed, but as it is the Downer, it's hard to say if they are mistakes or just intented "as is". In either case, it makes as perfect sense as the Downer's articles make sense in general...
I'm looking forwards to that magnum opus in days to come with great interest!
Actually. We made a great anthropological trip to the US. two years ago, so maybe we should publish an anthropological survey into the "American Soul"? :D
Would The Downer boost the markets with a front-page story?

Hmm, I do remember reading this on LOTR Wiki:
On an excerpt from a letter of Tolkien's, a new Ainu shall enter Arda upon the side of Melkor, and will aid him in battle. This Ainu is said to have a special relationship with Mandos, although it is not known whether or not he is a Vala or Maia. He is said to be held equal with Sauron, and his name was given by Christopher Tolkien as Gilthrang.
Can Helmost the Dreadfully Evil confirm any connection with this Gilthrang guy? Like, is he working as the Walk/Don't Walk signal or something?
Also, dinosaurs? Is the Dagor Dagorath going to involve dinosaur cavalry? It really should.

New means of communication is "hit" with youths between 13 and 12.
Is that months, years, days, millennia, centimetres, pounds? Between 13 and 12 what?
Did you see the halo of light around me? Obviously tea is heavenly and since I am the purveyor of it, I am also heavenly.
Actually it wasn't chamomile "tea" (it's not a tea, you know, unless it comes from the Camellia sinensis plant), it was a pu-erh. And it wasn't my fault that I ran out so soon. Agan stole all of my tea yesterday despite the fact that I just got a new shipment in last Tuesday. Now I have no more tea and the Downs with all be forced to forlornly go about without their daily tea. My evil scheme to make the entire Barrow-Downs into tea addicts is almost complete. It's not indoctrination, it's enlightenment!

Animation update: it's going well and should be done before the moot, hopefully. Legate, is your brother still willing to do the music? If so we can send a rough cut to him for scoring some time soon, if he's still up for it.
Post-pilot, we're thinking of doing some shorter animations. Perhaps some Volume 1 style quick fire jokes, or whatever. These shouldn't take as long or require as much intense work and will hopefully get the wheels greased enough for us to tackle a bigger series later on. I'll probably take suggestions, too. That way we can improve the whole process and get the main series ready at a higher quality.
Hopefully...

I will be launching a men's fragrance series soon, it is in the final development stages, right now under the working title "Beef it up"
In other news:
Rune's Quality Beef is contemplating a more active branding strategy, due to greediness this campaign will probably be highly unoriginal and followed by several lawsuits. The company is thinking along the lines of using model photos of Gollum and/or a drowsy badger, accompanied by a catchy slogan, preferably in German...
Although nothing has been decided yet, the preferred slogans are said to be:

Yes We Lard
Wir Leben Lard

The Door of night had been shattered. Melkor had returned to Middle Earth. The Dagor Dagorath raged across the world, breaking Arda apart as the Valar battled day and night against the Dark Lord and all his little goblins.
Turin Turambar dealt the final blow, breaking Morgoth once and for all.
Then the Pelóri Mountains were be levelled, the three Silmarils recovered from the Earth, sea, and sky, and Fëanor's spirit was released from the halls of Mandos to give them to Yavanna, who broke them and rekindled the light of the Two Trees. Then Fëanor revealed the substance by which he made the Silmarils; plastic.
Then the time came for the Second Music of the Ainur! And that's when everything changed.
In the ruins of the old Middle Earth, a lonely Barrow Wight stands, his hand upon the hilt of a rusty sword and his dead eyes glaring into the fallen stones of his home. The BWH wipes away a single tear from his skull-face as he reaches into the dust to retrieve a fragment of paper. One by one, he find more fragments until he is able to pull together a complete page from the final Downer Newspaper of Middle Earth Mk 1...

Part one of our series of alternate newspapers.
The Dead Times is an old and well established paper that attempts to appear sophisticated and high brow, but almost always ends up being silly and deranged. Reporting on important and pressing issues like lunch and beards, it sets itself up as the number one spot for irrelevant news that is made to sound more relevant than the end of the world!

Sorry guys, but the Downer Newspaper and this week's P&A will probably not come until later in the week. My computer died and I can't get my software to work on the emergency back up computer I'm using. Hopefully I should be back with a working thing by tomorrow, so I'll see what I can do.
In the meantime, anyone who wants to post an article to the thread is free to do so. :)

NO PAPER TODAY, SAYS PAPER GUY
by "Pickles" McSpankypants
Shock, horror and ambivalence swept the Downs today as alleged editor of the extremely unpopular "Barrow Downs Newspaper" announced via newspaper that there would be no newspaper today. It's about time somebody swept around here, it's getting grave-dusty.
Hookwilliam Fitzgoomba claimed that computer problems were to blame for the lack of gossip, slander and enraging lies that the population is accustomed to reading with their morning meal. Sources say that they saw sea-hag Aganzir attempt to bite the offending computers to death, but Sources is a silly person who knows just about as much as Jon Snow, because computers can't bleed or feel pain.
"This is disappointing," said one the phantom. "How are people supposed to read my own articles about how great I am? Looks like I have to go out and put leaflets on everyone's car windshields again."
"I'm for it!" said a man who looked like the phantom wearing a fake mustache. "How else will people realize how much they miss reading about the phantom unless they're not reading about the phantom?"
"I sure am going to miss reading about the phantom," said a man who looked like the phantom wearing a dress and long-haired wig. "Anyone else? Anyone? Anyone? Please notice me!"
the phantom could not be reached for additional comments. We didn't even try, really, he looked so happy drawing up his propaganda posters.
Advertisers have begun lining up outside the door of the Downer's main offices, demanding remuneration and various measures of Hookbill's flesh.
"As far as I know, we're all paid up," explained Rune of Rune's Quality Beef fame. "I just thought my main office could use a bit of decoration, and I decided that a human foot would be gorgeous on top of the pile of rotted Beef."
Eonwe, spokesman for "Let Them Eat Lard" revealed that he actually owed Hookbill money, but chose to line up because he believed that beating up people for no reason was "Fun For The Whole Family(tm)!".
The Barrow-Wight Himself ordered Moderators to shut down their usual weekend "Cleanup Squad Response Team" in response.
"Usually on Paper day, tempers flare, riots start in the street, volcanoes erupt, blood is mingled with milk and honey, the usual apocalyptic signs," explained The Books Moderator Estelyn Telcontar in a press conference that nobody attended. "We were pleased to see this morning that everybody was behaving rationally and politely in all forums and sub-forums. Posts in the Chapter-by-Chapter discussions have doubled! The Moderator team is hosting a huge party of special magnificence that nobody is invited to in celebration. It won't be all fun and games though. We will have to make a plan of attack for if the Paper returns. We're hoping we can get the Eagles to transport Hookbill's printing press to the Cracks of Doom for us."
The Eagles are currently on tour in the US and could not be reached for comment.
"The rumors that my computer is working just fine and that I spent my usual writing hours watching television are wrong! Unfounded! You can't prove anything!" Hookbill then attempted to weld his door shut using a sonic screwdriver. The police watched and laughed. He is now in custody and will appear in court after lunch.
And now for your irregularly scheduled Phantom and Alien fill-in.

Superb coverage, Oddwen. It's just like Hooky posted the latest edition. Except not.
A report on Fifty Shades of Gandalf the Grey in Sherwood Forest would have rounded out the edition quite nicely but I understand that the auteur has writer's cramp.

Next week sees the end of this current volume of Phantom and Alien. I know it was a bit meandering and didn't make a lot of sense, and that was my fault for losing track of what I was doing. But the next series will be better, I promise!

I have three things to say about this:
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY TEA! IT IS THE ELIXIR OF ALL!
The Downer this week has become overrun by bespectacled people!
That second article sounded suspiciously like real journalism...

Tea is the most important thing. It should always be in the paper. My personal crusade should be plastered all over the Barrow-Downs.
