I'm a bit confused, as I often am these days. Is there anything intrinsically different between a white room and a white house? And does it have black curtains? And should I be thinking of Eric Clapton or Someone Else? It's a war edition after all.

Hookbill the Goomba
08-09-2007, 05:58 AM
The intrinsic difference would be that a white room is just one room where as a house is the whole house. I like to imagine that the white room has no windows, just one trap door in the ceiling and bright lights everywhere. :D

MANWE TO ADOPT ZEUS METHOD OF ARDA MANAGEMENT

After years of humble, chaste, timid, and generally boring world Kingship, Manwe has decided to remake his leadership style. “I realize now the flaws in my old style,” said Manwe during his exclusive interview with The Downer. “It was my fault that Melkor got out of hand. Melkor always looked powerful and impressive, and did things to wow the crowds. That's why he had so many followers. If I had only done the same sorts of things, he never would’ve had so many minions,” said Manwe with regret. “Also, he let his flaws show through. Me, on the other hand- I always acted so sickeningly perfect. And the fact is, people love a flawed hero. I should’ve thrown a few tantrums and maybe destroyed a mountain range or two. It would have got me points with many of the Ainur.”

Later in the interview, Manwe berated himself for never using his gift of creation. “I’ve been such a big zero! Varda made the stars, Yavanna made the two trees, Aule made the dwarves, but me… I’ve created nothing! Melkor and Sauron created and tinkered with Orcs, Trolls, Dragons, Vampires, and Werewolves, but I haven’t so much as baked a cake!”

According to Manwe, it was while contemplating his lack of creation that he thought of Zeus, the ruling god in Greek legends. “I realized that Zeus was exactly who I wanted to be,” said Manwe. “He was an active force in the world, always throwing his weight around, and creating. Or, more specifically, procreating.” Manwe went on to say that his change of management style would put a strong emphasis on procreation. “Zeus sired offspring that did all sorts of wonderful things. Some became gods and helped manage the world, and others became evil-destroying heroes! Just imagine how things could’ve been different here in Arda had there been a couple dozen half-Vala superheroes running around Beleriand in the first age.”

Manwe said there was no set timetable, but promised that he would be working on having Elf, Man, Dwarf, and Hobbit children very soon, and that these children would have a positive effect on the world in general. When asked if there were any other motivating factors contributing to his desire for offspring, Manwe, who had been staring hungrily at a passing Elf-maid, answered, “Erm, ahem, of course not. No, no, I’m only doing this for the purpose of helping the world.”

When asked to comment on Manwe’s new philosophy, Varda gave a sour look, and said, “Well, he certainly seems to be a fan of Zeus. Me- I've always liked Hera.” The Queen of the Stars then began cackling uncontrollably, and waved off further questions.

The other Valar refused to comment altogether, except Aule, who had this to say. "You go back and tell that nutcase that it can't be done! I can't 'forge' lightning bolts for him! Lightning isn't friggin' metal! And I'm not forging a giant trident for Ulmo. He doesn't want it! And my name is 'Aule'! Not 'Hephaestus'! Tell that old bat to quit calling me that!"

The coloured backgrounds are mainly to keep up the joke that the phantom has a room in his house which is totally white. In which, for reasons best left unexplained, he has a lot of his conversations with Alien. If there is ever a conversation between Alien and someone else, or the phantom and someone else on a white background, it probably means I forgot. :D

Also, I happen to like doing the backgrounds sometimes and it does sometimes add to the story, as in last year's Christmas special where the phantom went to Belfalas and there was a desert scene. :p

Local Mental Hospital Puts on Production of "Lord of the Rings"

From right to left: Frodo, Sam, Pippin & Merry

Residents at St. Merisu's Home for the Mentally Ill began their first annual production of "The Lord of the Rings" on Monday. The play, based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien and adapted for stage by Little Larry, runs for half an hour and features a talentless but colorful cast.

"The play is entirely run by the patients," said Dr. White in recent interview. "It's not only the acting. From the writing, to the stage design, props, and costuming, we left it all up to them."

And it shows, precious, yes it does. The entire set consists of a single backdrop painted in a checkerboard design, a card table covered by an Elmo print sheet, and a bucket of pebbles. The play meanders from beginning to end, and members of the cast routinely forget their lines, though it is often difficult to tell since the lines were written by the alter-ego of a paranoid schizophrenic. The costumes were designed by Vera Wang.

At one point in the play the director ran on stage screaming that "All is wrong! All is ruined! All is finishéd!" until a team of orderlies wrestled him off the stage.

Tolkien purists have protested the production, saying the script takes gross and unnecessary liberties with the source material. "For instance," said renowned Tolkien enthusiast Christopher Lee, "there is no land called 'Munchkin Land' in Lord of the Rings. This is not the only incident where Mr. Larry seems to have confused Tolkien's work with The Wizard of Oz, such as the scene near Mt. Doom where Frodo and 'Toto' are attacked by Flying Monkeys.

"Furthermore, it was very unpleasant when the Ents rushed into the audience and beat people with sticks."

When asked to comment, Little Larry responded, "You can't be totally faithful to such a long book when you're limited to a half hour production. Would you like to see my magic sword? It's made out of plastic bottle caps."

The play runs through the end of the week.

This week, Alien discusses the philosophical implications of being cartoon characters...

http://i12.tinypic.com/4ka8hhw.jpg

And now, The Downer Newspaper presents; an all new chapter in the saga of Middle Earth. A Never before seen manuscript found hidden behind the toilet of Christopher Tolkein's grand nephew's second cousin... A comical homage* to The Slimarillion

THE WORLD OF THE LORDS

Moreover, Olméth was warming at the foot of the mount; his hairs were teared with flame, and so summoned he the creature Swolfthron, the beast rose from the deepest chasms to the very rocks upon ground, which did shake vibrationally even stone, hence his sword was lost once more; and, to the end of discovering the whereabouts of his companion Morolen, did he willingly fall through the very fires before him without a single word. "Fall thee, for I shall strike down both thy legs!" cried Lögorithm, but not even the loudest of them could bring back the stronghold of Blüch-Holgerin, save the Great Boil of Shrîph-Dûrmaláth, whose eyes were torn with bleach.

Moreover, there the man from Galmartherûk came to slay the hair beast of Magölarsk ere the dawn dist fall upon his fair city's brow. "Let us we ride to Pythagoras - for the halls await our comfort," did Rilmôrem cry, as rode he forth with the company of the Trillmaroth at his side. Yet, it came to pass, that on his long journey the Children of Ragxs did meet the Rõng Man of the West before they did ride from Liquíquigék. "Nay! 'tis the day of good! And thyne blood shalt stain the fair Valleys of Gòrgafhsz!" pronounced Nithrögath in his engagement to the Kings of Nimrôgdser.

Moreover, it did happen that the darkened heart of Bladere came into the reckoning of death. He ditst have the larger of the moustaches of all who hath rode forth from the master of the Halls of the King of the City of Kingdom. Ergo, it was unknown to Thakatûlikin that his father had betrayed the Lord of Gerererèd to his death on the Mountain of Hexas. And it proved his folly for he did not yet put in jeopardy the Jalmnâlkin and his kin for it was not in the law of the Bröncrock for the kin of Readfâ to be slain (yet, he was).

Moreover, it was the most awful vision that all of the Riders of Hikilòthikêz hath ever previewed. Thereover, his hands were covered in the blood of Melgrön the Great who dith challenge him to mortal combat in the Pits of Modulus. Yea, during his time, Olméth remained in his father's keeping, 'till the Maiden of Radiôn did ruelly slay his wife. Thus he took council in his heart, neither to slay his nurse, nor burn the King (for he who took the great Sword of Rapacity did spill his blood upon the head of his mistress).

Moreover, the Helseater didst not find his golden bladder as it was with his own father's child. So it was, that in the deeps of Tanliquen, Liár dist find the blade of Grothin and use it to his advantage. The Rider of the east saw what was done and despaired, even onto the ending of his life. For the curse that Melekalgoth had lain upon him set his will to find the evil treasure of Jaxélmish. Not only in his heart but also in his mind. Bladere found his life at a loss and so finding his way to the Peak of Péxsar, the mountain of silver blood, he did cast his head freely upon the rocks and lay dead to his father's will. Never again did the man from Galmartherúk come to that sacred place, nor did his brother.

Moreover, the mighty dragon Logoth rose from the black pit of Krámzikil and so came upon Helminué's wife while she laboured about her works in secret. Never was the rising of fire in the heart of Logorithm so deep that his face had to be pulled off, he swore revenge against the Wrong man of the West and so ensnared him. Now, it came to pass that at the evening of midyear, Melgron did find his brother sleeping on the floor of the kitchen,
"Get ye up!" he cried, "Else feel my blade in thy flesh." With no word of warning the brother did slay his father in that very hour. None ever came back to his grave save Readfa and his kin.

Moreover, the land of Galgemenesh was set in ruin for the anslaught of Blaor, who it was that ate the mighty legs of Gothmire. Pencilic did open the fire and so jump forth into the air of Deligan and land in the stomach of his father. Hexar proved easier to ensnare, but some there were who saw this from afar. So it was that the mariner of Osirigond named himself "Lotho son of Fotho" and so was killed in that very hour. The mighty Dragon did see all of this and so flew down to the village and burned it to the ground. None did report back to Malkarox about the cat slaying at Yelk.

Moreover, Thaûlik did not see his own son on that day, because he was lost. Halim did meet the Rõng Man of the West but he was the wrong, and he wished to see Delifan once more under the light of day, before the moon did become once again darkened in light. Löthirm did fling his brother upon the pyre shouting "I shalt fling from thee thine neck and face." With that he took a knife and began to take his legs off. "With both eyes though shalt give!" cried the spider of the Goras, "Or I shall remove thine voice box." so reluctantly Ulmoth gave up his seat in the house of the king and wandered far over the lands.

Moreover, the time was not yet ripe of Gelthom to strike down his mother’s kindred, nor to slay his brother in evil mood. Nought that had been wrought by Molosc the smith had been damaged in the mighty burning of the dragon on the fell morn. But it came to pass, that all the lands to the west were taken away and put in bondage. Tethil wandered long on the shores of Germil before Himsar took his legs away. Now, in the east, Kirthman saw what was done and saw his time had come, he departed from his hiding place and so came to the forest of Nimpost, taking with him, the beard of his father and the moustache of his mother.

Moreover, in the lands of Hikiopt, Mek did find his father lately gone. But the curse of Alas came upon him in the dark, for they were of the eldest line of the princes of the Rodlon. Therefore, he fled out into the winter, a hunted man, but the dragon’s suspicions eyebrows aided him. Onions they did bring to the feast of Golden carpets and many other gifts of wonder, and the King was pleased. Now, it came to pass that in the heart of the hidden realm of Filsim, a messenger came and bad the lord here the news of his uncle's defiance and rape of the gold in Nimland. "I heare your hails," said the lord "And i love this hour, not at all. For it is said that the man with long trousers shall bring tidings of doom and our kin shall be a-stranged." then he departed and cast himself upon the rocks and was devoured by spiders and dogs. Nothing more was told of that realm save that it fell air the son of Pulas could come to their aid.

Moreover, the host of the Gimbd passed over the Mountains of drizzél, and crossed the wide lands of Intél, being urged on by the king for he was eager to have his shoes removed. Still Nem sent others, one by one; and one by one the lord of the citadel took them by the feet and threw them on their faces. Then Jin lusted for the arm of his brother, for they had in them socks of great worth. Nought that was made faded with the moustache of the king, for it was made of pure iron and bore down heavily on any who looked upom on it in wrath and misdeed. So they were.

Moreover Bit hadal found his maiden's arms filled with garlic and so perished in his later deeds. The curse of his father's nose never left his kin. So it was that the trousers of the Golden head were revealed to the dark one and he lusted after his own legs, but could not reach them.

Since that newspaper didn't exist when I dropped you off at the station yesterday afternoon, I'm more impressed than usual.

Readers of The Downer might be interested to hear that the location referred to by Kings Norbury Borough Council as 'Amon Rûdh' consists of an enormous sheet of cardboard, decorated with a large watercolour of a mountain, and with This is Amon Rûdh scrawled on it in green crayon. It has been leaned against a pair of trees, in one of which dwell the property's only residents: a group of squirrels, who are full-time students at the University of Arthedain and therefore exempt. I still maintain that my residence in the real Amon Rûdh is titular and figurative, and that my use of council services is therefore entirely imaginary. I have on several occasions offered to pay my taxes in an imaginary form commensurate with my fictional residency, on one occasion even presenting in person an imaginary bag of imaginary coins; but the council have remained obstinate on the issue. However, repeated threats of imaginary prison sentences in allegorical lockholes have done nothing to weaken my mythical resolve.

CHRISTOPHER TOLKIEN ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF JRRT’S SECRET LOTR SEQUELS

The literary world experienced an earthquake today when J R R Tolkien’s son, Christopher, announced the existence of a series of Lord of the Rings sequels, penned in secret by JRRT towards the end of his life.

“You have no idea how badly I’ve been wanting to spill the beans on this,” said CT , “But my father made me promise not to let the secret out until all the novels were ready for release.”

The new series is expected to nullify certain portions of the Appendix of LOTR- primarily the sections regarding the years directly following the fall of the Dark Lord. CT admits that this may anger some fans, but insists that they won’t mind once they are immersed in the new stories.

Few plot details have been released, but the public has been told that the book series is seven books in length, and begins approximately ten years after the Dark Lord’s defeat. The stories primarily follow Frodo Baggins, the famous “Hobbit who lived”. The first major plot detail that was released was a bombshell- the Dark Lord was not permanently vanquished! Perhaps his “One Ring” was only one of many anchors to this world?

CT says that the first novel, which will be released next month, is fairly light, in the style of The Hobbit, but adds that the novels will gain both length and maturity as the series progresses. Also promised is a detailed look into the pasts of some of the more familiar characters.

“Honestly, that’s what is best about these new books- learning more about the characters we have grown to love so much,” says CT. “For instance, we find out that Gandalf, long before his famous wizarding duel with the evil dark wizard Saruman, was actually friends with Saruman in his youth! Oh, and we also find out that Sauron himself had a hand in the unfortunate deaths of Frodo’s parents. And yes, for those who’ve been asking, the Morgul-blade scar left on Frodo’s shoulder is very significant to the tale.”

As much as CT has answered, there is much more that he has refused to comment on. In particular, he would not take any questions regarding Elrond, Gandalf’s hook-nosed greasy-haired right hand man whose loyalty was always in question- until, of course, he showed up unexpectedly at the Paths of the Dead and presented Aragorn with the sword Anduril, and thus proved his loyalty. Or did he?

There are many theories as to why CT will not comment on this and other points, but doubtless we will have the answers after the seventh book is released. In the meantime, be sure and read The Downer every day for the latest on the LOTR sequels.

It has been reported that a mass spillage on the East - West Road into the Barrow Downs is preventing anyone getting in or out. Moreover, an explosion of jam (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y230/retzwerx/stoppareduv2_web.jpg) in the Downer Printing room has meant that the Newspaper production has been put on hold until either the jam gets eaten, or goes off and environmental control come in and hose us all down.

Basically, it's a really busy week for me, and I usually do the Newspaper on Sunday night, but I've had some important government business to attend to and tomorrow is a Nightmare of a day for me. The right to taste is wonderful, especially in the subject of wallpaper.
Besides, we all know moderate tastes are in beige and off-and-on-again colonial white, pfft... Mind-numbing and without any original thought, except maybe the paid interest of a PAC to nod in approval to the slime on the walls.
Give the far and wide palette a chance.

Now, the only thing is, what about a fight to the death with wallpaper, an aesthetic past time (only to be uptaken in the time of due departure)? Hmm...

Interesting point.

There seems to be a pattern of things of importance ending with fire in The Downer... Sort of like a trend, plus, fire tends to sell, apparently because we're all reading it.
Though, fires tend to make good report endings, and they do appear quite a lot in LOTR, come to think of it. There's the shire and saruman incident, denethor taking a dive, Balrog!, pretty much anything Sauron owned at one point or another(including himself), etc...

So there you are, full circle or three quarters of the way but still good enough, reasoning why fire appears in The Downer this week. Probably next week, and the week after that. We just need fire endings, its in our nature. ;)

Also, I'll need my lung back actually. I use it as a carrying case for paint now.

The Magical painting of Doom (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/ih8mcdonalds/Barrowdownsphotopage/Hookbillthegoomba.jpg), I call it.

The photo page is always a source of newspaper pictures. So beware before you post any there. ;)
Well first of all Hookbill, that is an awesome picture (you can see my teenageness in that) and second my parents would kill me if I put my picture up on the internet even if it was on the Downs, because you might even be a stalker out to kill me or something....

And how in the world do get a Phantom and Alien cartoon with out Alien or even without Phantom? And who the heck are those other guys?(and yes one of them does look like one of the earliest Downers)

It's going to be another animated episode. In case you missed the first one, here it is again, in all its colourful magical glory. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyG4DelcAwU)

Aha, so that's where the Entwives went!
Really, the article made me laugh, especially because it's so true. Next thing you know you'll find out Beorn had an affair with one of the ponies. :D

Well, as you see on the picture I at least had the pharao-like scepters in the hand when I was on the throne.

And as for the Phantom and Alien episode, is it me or has Alien bought himself a white hat which he later painted red with blood to make it look like a Christmas hat ?!
Because something like that is pretty much his style.

This paper deserves a big helping of Awwwh's. :)

First of all, phantom & alien this monday is wonderful! Merry and Pip are adorable, even in this form. Though, I can't imagine anyone besides Alien having the conscious choice to give them that much catnip.

Also, 'Awh' to the Entwife. I don't see the reason to disapprove, she's lovely, spring as a spruce, jolly as holly and other things that end in... -olly. Besides, how often do any of us see an Entwife, let alone in the Downer? The rights of the Entwife should be respected.

I must say this really made my Christmas merrier :D I could have expected this coming, though I was still surprised when seeing that article.

I didn't know such a big affair would arise from that...

"Smrk", now that's great! It must have taken some effort to find this ;)

Yet I just realised - all these previous marriages (and this one as well, while speaking of it) have been the work of Agan & Lommy! See: first I was married to Idril, that was in their WW village. Then I married that wolf, that was not exactly their idea but Nogrod's, yet one never knows whether there was not more behind it. And now this thing with the tree. Agan and Lommy for some reason unknown to me obviously desperately want me to get married. :D

But Legate, why is your wife crying? Have you been mean to her or is she just so happy?

And as for the Phantom and Alien episode, is it me or has Alien bought himself a white hat which he later painted red with blood to make it look like a Christmas hat ?!
According to the slowly increasing amount of blood, I'd say someone has hit him on the head. I guess he deserved it. ;)

Well, the Phantom and Alien Christmas Special was lost in the depths of space. But worry not, good people. Last night three members of the Downer staff got stuck behind the fridge in the basement. It took three lorries and a crane to set them lose, and once we did, we discovered an old film can with this inside it:

Before they were famous, before they were feverish, before they were funny, it's...

THE PHANTOM AND ALIEN ANIMATED CHRISTMAS SPECIAL (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JHqbld8Us8&feature=user)

Hope you all enjoy watching it.
Credit to my older brother Matt for the animation, music and the voice of Sir Phantom. I did the script, story board and the voice of Mr Alan. :D

Alien is his real name, but Alan is his 'stage name'*. It was all the rage back then to have a stage name.

*As apposed to his 'Strange name' which was Albertousnuss.

"Thang you very buch."

And yes I do know of stage names and when you write with a different name, I don't have a stage name even though I've been in plays since fifth grade and considering that I am in eighth now I have been in ummm... four plays and a musical.

I must register a protest. This does not look like a Christmas special at all to me. There are no flying reindeer, no elves of any particular breed, nor any noggin's of egg. Surely we could have had the true and full story behind Alfie the Santa Elf but I suppose that was nixed by davem of the Yard.

It really sounds suspiciously like a pre-emptive affair for Hogmanay. That's the big party by all accounts of northern mythologies. Perhaps this coming week those dark and handsome cats walk down from the ceiling for first footing.

Back in the early days I had concidered making it a Daily Newspaper.
I very quickly realised what a tremendously stupid idea that was. It would have become so much less funny very quickly and I'm sure I would have been driven out of town. I have made front pages and come back to them a few days later and thought 'Actually, that's probably quite offensive!' and done something different. ;)

EDIT:

I think I had better admit now that there were some that I thought too risky in the early days which I eventually did do later on. I'm not going to say which. But there are worse ones. It will be interesting to see where the line is drawn. :D

What Alien is unaware of is that Ye Child possesses fivefold Superhero powers. Like The Trump Of Doom, which renders all foes helplessly immobile due to the toxic gases. And The Power Vomit, a strange force he uses to project noxious substances some distance and can make his opponents blind. Occasionally he also uses his Jet Stream to soak your clothes through, too, so you must leave the room to change and he uses that time to concoct more cunning plans. Then there is also the King Karate Kick, a sinister power which has the ability to swiftly remove your plate of toast from your knee, and is generally a warning of much worse to come. As it's usually followed by the Kraken Wakening, his most powerful force, which has the whole neighbourhood awake and alert and attending to his every whim...

...against such an array of forces mere mortals are powerless...

Moths are awesome. You know, you love any thing that is an animal that moves... except for the science teachers son!;)(and I won't say his name online)

Hookbill who was that drunken Downer that blew up the balloon factory?

Hookbill who was that drunken Downer that blew up the balloon factory?

No one got a good look at the culprit. But one witness said he had a red beard. ;)
I'm sure DCI Lalwende will want to speak to anyone matching said description. But make sure you don't eat any of PC Davem's 'Special' mushrooms.

Why does everybody actually believe that I have a beard?

So... are you admitting it? :p

If you read back on the articles where davem is mentioned you'll find some not-so-subtle implications that he is on strong halusinagenic drugs.

Inccodentely, if you have any incrimiating photos, The Downer will pay good (read: 'fake') money to anyone who PMs them to me.

*sighs* Agreed Hookbill. I thank you for helping keep an eye on this thread as I haven't peeked in lately. Please remember to keep on topic and avoid chatting. As much fun as it is to delete posts, which I have done in some of the aforementioned, it gets a bit tedious too. Infractions will be next.

Hookbill, I was going through this thread (a good one by the way), and I noticed that there is no P&A 31. Is it an unreleased edition, or did you just not make one?

Ah! I think that happened back when my computer died, so I'm sure it was a mistake. I could make one if you want. ;)

I wonder if the exploding camels had anything related to the balloon factory incident? :p
They could be a distracting ground cover at least.

I find the new shadow sectary general Chancellor to be quite nice, plus they have an appropriate head cover for all occasions. And look at their poor paw! :(

That was all too funny, especially Raynor's hotel and the mini-heads. And I sincerely hope that the 'downer who won the right to eat her/his sister was not Greenie and not in werewolf (not in any other circumstances either, for that matter). :p Also, I'm glad they removed Agan's teeth so she won't be biting people that much (again, I could mention werewolf ;)).

Anyway, I can only wonder how do you Hookbill always find the time to do this marvellous newspaper. But I'm very glad you do. :D

Have you never heard of Freedom of the Press? What? That actually exists?

I had planned on doing a St Pancake's Day special, but I forgot. Sorry. :(

I've made a decision, though. This year, at Oxonmoot, I'll be bringing a special, exclusive copy of The Downer which I will give to any fellow Barrow Downers who come. The Oxonmoot Special will be printed on A3 paper and have some inside pages as well as probably a couple of Phantom and Aliens. :D

Quite possibly.
Actually, the reason for the confusion was due to the olden times one which I saved under the name 'P and A 035' and I never noticed. I will rectify the mistake at some point.
