Who is the count of Monte Carlo?
Who indeed? ;)
Mongoose! Sorry folks! I've got the days mixed up! I thought it was Thursday today! Oh well, I'm sure you won't mind P&A a little earlier...

My bet is from Finland, those people are too cheerful to not be causing some sort of trouble. Why just the other day there was a report of three penguins escaping from the San Antonio zoo and clogging up traffic for three hours. Need I say anymore, I think we all know who loves penguins and lives in Finland! :D
Finland, Finland, Finland (http://www.last.fm/music/Monty+Python/_/Finland) :D
I must say that after that poetry debauchery which was shockingly imposed upon my abode in my absence I am srsly exhibiting signs of bad post traumatic stress disorder. The effects are so shocking I might be inclined to suggest that Squatter's boring sky poetry emporium could be used to control that Shire Hobbit problem of which TP wrote.

Another excellent Downer and P&A. I quite agree that the sky is indeed exceedingly dull. I also greatly appreciated the phantom's article, and I think we should put some lobbyists in Gondor to persuade Aragorn into hobbit population control via Barrow-Wights.
That may have been my favourite Downer yet!

And about that king, Aragorn I think that we should eat him too! Along with that dreadful Tom Bombadillo!

A really funny way of population control, let loose a bit of Hell! Now if I took that seriously I may end up going to our Congress and tell them the best way to keep overpopulation is to release orcs. :D

Yes he is. Well, sort of. His blowy-up knowledge was first mentioned HERE (http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i291/JoelCornah/Episode006.jpg). There are a lot of explosions in this volume. I may tone it down in Volume 3... Or not. ;)

With the help of the phantom, this newspaper was much easier to throw together.

And, like a bowl of custard left in the oven for too long, the plot thickens and begins to smell rather bad.

If you've any questions about what on earth is going on in P&A, it may help to go back over the previous comics. I like to plant little things that pay of AGES later. Keep your eyes open all the time.
I've not had any submissions for the P&A competition yet... Is anyone interested? :(

I like her too - she gives this kind of "concerned" look (well, that's not the proper word, but something like that).
And as for the P&A, I didn't even want to say that I will try before I actually do, but then even funnier, I forgot about that completely :D So, good you reminded me of that. I just need to find time to make it... pity, had I remembered earlier, I could have done it this weekend. You will have to wait, then.

You will eventually receive a P&A from me Master Hookbill. And I know of another individual who will be doing one as well. Never fear.
And as you can see, I've turned away from cats for headline fodder. The new fodder is penguins. One guess as to where I got that idea from.
One penguin mini-headline I sent in will particularly amuse you, Legate. You'll know it when you see it. ;)

So as not to break the rules I have to enforce (I'd have to delete my own post and send myself a stern reprimand by PM! ) here's an on-topic comment:

Morthoron, I'm also talking from personal experience. :D I'm sure we all at some point in time (and several times more) are pests.
P.S. see if the phantom sends you a PM that doesn't just mean it was important enough that he noticed, but that it was so important he spent his own time to send a personal response. If Esty sends you something, by her own admission, it probably isn't a good thing. So really what it boils down to, is you need to get tp's attention and be annoying (in moderation).

Actually, Beth, I was meaning "Master" as in "Master of 'The Downer', and master of us lowly writers, and master of Downs related entertainment". I suppose I could say "Lord", but he always tells me not to call him that in public.
And regarding the switch from cats to penguins, I figured it'd cut down on the hate-mail. Each time an anti-cat headline hit the front page my mailbox was flooded with death threats. This past week's anti-penguin headlines only yielded one single death threat. Though the writer attempted to remain anonymous, the source is rather obvious. And I seriously doubt the threat could be carried out by such a distant individual.
Yes, Di- you're a big deal. Ranked in the top ten for certain.
So really what it boils down to, is you need to get tp's attention and be annoying.
That should totally be listed in the forum rules.
In addition to participating intelligently and respectfully, we also recommend that all new members attempt to gain the attention of the phantom somehow. And finally, please be annoying from time to time.
I bet Esty is going to put that up somewhere in the N&N forum.

Hope you're all enjoying this volume. If you're wondering, this volume will be 100 episodes long. Volume 3, on the other hand, is probably going to be much longer. And Volume 4! Goodness me! I have no idea.
Basically, as we approach episode 50, we reach the first climax of the serise. From there it builds and builds until the shocking ending of episode 100. And, I hope you find the finale VERY surprising.

What Balderdash! The new issue has me scratching my head in amazement over where they get their writers. One can only assume that the recent Barrow Downs Newspaper article was written about some other alatar, as it surely wasn't this nick. Two items from the article clearly indicate that the writer was either (1) writing about some other nit-cradling carrier of Pediculus humanus capitis, or (2) making up the entire story from whole (infested) clothe.
Item 1 - "...he <alatar> is a 'Well respected Man about town.'" As if! The town folk consider me to be a nuisance, and if it weren't for the moat, I'd have already felt the pinch of pitchforks by the light of torches. However, I respected myself, and were to travel about the town...but that couldn't be it.
Item 2 - "Friends of alatar..." Are there any left, and those not in hiding surely wouldn't want the gleam of press coverage?
Bah!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
To the person and/or persons dubiously titled 'Editor' and/or 'Editorial Staff':
It is rare that I appear on these pages as myself. I usually write op/ed pieces as some lunatic persona with a clever pseudonym lampooning a tabloid that in itself is a satire of any number of exploitative rags disregarding truth and ethics in the wacky world of the prurient press; however, your front-page blurb 'Phantom Criticized For Mithalwen Article' has gone beyond the pale (and beyond pale in a BD sense is quite ashen). To say that I have been misquoted is an understatement. Let's break down the statements you purport to be mine, as opposed to what I actually said:
First, you claim I said, "What he's doing is an insult to true journalism."
Yet, what I actually stated is as follows (with your out-of-context edits in bold, underlined print):
What an extraordinary article by The Phantom! He's offered a brief but poignant biography of Mithalwen, doing so in an unbiased and colorful manner. It is an undeniable treat to have read such an offering from a newspaper that usually stoops to insult and innuendo. I am gratified to heap honors upon Phantom, and the steps The Downer is making to become the epitome of true journalism.
And then to make matters worse, you claim I said, "A newspaper is supposed to be used for the purpose of reporting, not winking at your friends."
Again, my actual statement, which concerned my new puppy and had nothing to do with the article at all, is as follows (with your out-of-context edits in bold, underlined print):
In house-breaking a puppy, I find soiled newspaper (from the area within the house where the dog is supposed to be paper-trained) is excellent for the purpose of guiding the puppy to doing his duty out-of-doors (if anyone else is involved in training of the puppy, make sure he or she is reporting the progress of the pup -- consistency is important!). When the puppy is ready to advance from paper-training, just take the soiled newspaper outside to a specified area and place the puppy adjacent to the paper, and the scent usually does the rest. But be warned: house-breaking is a serious business, and should not be taken lightheartedly with much winking and nodding. Dogs, even immature puppies, look at your behavior and behave in lke manner. You must be a dog's master before you can be friends.
I find the inept and libelous methods with which you manage to warp the truth to be mind-bogglingly addled, and, truth to tell, utterly unnecessary, particularly since I insult your paper on a regular basis without any need for redaction, blue penciling, deletions, insertions, abridging, abbreviating or edits of any sort.
Sincerely,
Morthoron the Dark Elf

Of course, I hope you realise that the editors occasionally mess up and do this to the outgoing mail as well as the incoming...
Dear Morthoron,
Do you think you are the king of Gondor? Really sir, we must protest, as I have it on good authority that Legate of Amon Lanc has a claim to this title, and as the first person we have heard this from, his must be the superior claim in our eyes.
Since you are not the king of Gondor it is clear that you must be a hatter, and clearly on your way to insanity. What have we done to earn your ire? I assure you, we should really like to know this, in order to publish it. News is hard to come by, right? Indeed, there is talk of setting up a helpline for us and everything! Please Contact The Saucepan Man for more details about your irrational hatred, so that we can get a story of him chasing you off his lawn.

To the Editorial Staff of The Downer periodical,
We of the Canine Protection and Unification Group would first like to say that we hope it is not to presumptuous to assume that an “editorial staff” does indeed exist for The Downer publication. We also apologize for any insult that may have been caused by our greeting if you are still posing as a “newspaper”, and thus a reliable source of news.
As for our purpose for writing, it has come to the CPUG’s attention that The Downer not only regularly displays but also promotes the oppression of animals, particularly our canine friends. In your most recent publication, you belittle the canis genus to the extreme. Whether or not a being smells or is burnt has nothing to do whatsoever with that being being a useful member of society deserving respect.
We are happy to see that you are taking steps in a good direction by allowing the voice of the equine minority to be heard, but it seems there is still a long way to go for our canine brothers and sisters.
We hope that in the future you will be more thoughtful in your treatment of man’s best friend. We also hope that you may begin on a program to recovery and redemption by picking up a copy of CPUG’s own publication, Canine Living. In this week’s edition, we specifically suggest the article “Doo on the Grass: It’s Good for the Environment and Okay for You”.
Respectfully,
The Canine Protection and Unification Group

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Sirs,
We at the North Downs Renaissance Festival express our blistering outrage concerning the staggering loss suffered by many of our performers in the wake of the stunning revelation that Ms. Telcontar has been stealing warts for years. You might not be aware, but the re-enactors, performers and staff of North Downs Renaissance Festival rely on such disfigurements as warts to complete the look and feel of an actual 15th century village. We pride ourselves in looking like characters from a Bruegel painting. This requires much sacrifice on the part of our performers -- some of the more zealous re-enactors have sawed off their own legs, pulled out teeth, and have contracted small pox in order to better mimic actual medieval beggars, mendicants and yeomen. Most have not bathed in years, and eat only acorns and onions to assure authenticity.
By our estimates, Ms. Telcontar has made off with at least twenty pounds worth of warts from our organization. It may not seem like much, but considering the rather insubstantial weight of the average mole (even the big, pulsing hairy ones), the loss is prodigious. In addition, many of our performers have expressed a concern that perhaps warts were not the only bodily deformities Ms. Telcontar has removed. There are reports of missing wens, goiters and moles as well. This represents a tremendous deficit in the authentic hideousness we wish to portray, and an irretrievable loss in time invested in growing such deformities (it takes years to grow a great goiter!).
In conclusion, we hope Ms. Telcontar shows true remorse regarding her crime and returns the purloined pimples. Her crime is a pock-mark on an otherwise unblemished record, but such an act of mercy would soothe bruised egos, calm public inflammation, reduce scarring and be a method of face-saving. We can well understand the growth of her wart-infatuation (who doesn't envy a well-formed wart or a mighty mole?), and do not wish to lump her with other more freckled criminals. She needn't carry the stigma of her mottled crime like a birthmark for the rest of her life.
Yours truly,
Verruca Vulgaris
Coordinator of Stumps, Bumps and Boils

This week, The Phantom is sworn in to The Hoody Cloaky Group. The swearing in involved an awful lot of swearing, I can tell you. LETTER TO THE EDITOR
To whom it may concern:
I am just dropping a line to commend a superlative article in the most recent 'Downer, entitled ''Panic as Burning Bloke Enters Playground" by E. D. Derek. It was the type of iconoclastic piece that shatters the apathetically lethargic mood that currently holds our society in thrall by subtley skewering newspapers' outmoded habits of attempting to report news in a factual manner, using grammar and punctuation, or trying to make sense. The article had none of this folderol -- how refreshing! Or to put things in context, as Mr. Derek said, "Lah lah foo foo, mongoose on toast." Brilliant!
It was rather like James Joyce and ee cummings had bumped uglies on the editor's desk, right atop the galleys for the latest edition of the paper (I guess one would call it a news leak). It was bold! It was masterful! I couldn't understand a word of it! I was so excited, I went right out and set fire to my garage as a beacon for the whole world to see. Unfortunately, the fire spread to several of my neighbor's houses, and I have been arrested for arson. But that doesn't matter, because a literary luminary has this day been born! I had tried to share my joy with other cellmates, but they seem put off by my ardor, and they have asked the guards that I be removed and put into solitary confinement.
In closing, I can only say that the cell in solitary has 14,364 colored dots on the floor and each speaks in one or another dialect current in 18th century B.C. (I enjoyed the 'Hammurabi and the whore of Bablyon' jokes at first, but the Amorites are rather crude, and it is not at all mannerly that they keep mentioning the need for blood sacrifice to the goddess Ishtar).

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (Sung to the tune of 'Thick as a Brick')
Dear Downer Staff:
I hope you don't mind this editorial roast,
But your eyelids might blister while you're reading this post.
I oft' times do wonder if your writers can think --
Your grammar's atrocious and your spelling, it stinks.
But no news is good news on the Downs,
With the Barrow Wight making his rounds,
And Phantom and Alien are profound --
If you're dead in the head.
And this journalistic nightmare just won't go away,
Like a tidal wave of gravy that Oddwen has sprayed.
The sadists are typing with tongues in their cheeks
For the next edition due at the start of the week.
But the Downer is getting surreal,
Like Salvador Dali in high heels,
Whose fishnet stockings only appeal --
When you're dead in the head.
And the nausea I feel
Is welling today.
The Downer's a bad dream
I have every Sunday!
And I look with dread

So, the Barrow-Downs is revealed as having an Establishment of its very own! It has a Lincoln's Inn Fields and a Whitehall - superb! This must mean there are also Wightish civil servants, and an M'eye'5! *groan* But this begs the question - if the B-W is the Prime Minister, then who is the Queen who he and the Establishment serves?

The matter of the Wightish Monarchy will be dealt with... probably in volume 4 or 5. Which, by the by, I spent the other day planning out when I should have been doing coursework. :D
I think Downs' Civil servants will be looked into in a future volume. I had a little idea I don't mind sharing with you. Basically, different aspects of Downs society would be looked into in each volume;
Vol 2: Police
Vol 3: Funeral directors
Vol 4: Medicine
Vol 5: Civil servants.
In most of these instances, it is Alien who annoys the heck out of the respective people. ;)
Oh, and the Downs' Spy type thing is called 'BI-5'. Barrow Inteligence section 5. They have a sort of rivalry with the CIA, 'Cann-Dum Inteligence Agency'. Yeah, that was a running 'joke' in the newspaper. I toyed with the idea of The Phantom joining BI-5 in volume 3, but it didn't pan out.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Sirs,
I must make my disdain and contempt as clear as possible, in words that are succinct and sentences devoid of superfluity. No beating around the bush, no long-winded rhetoric, no clarion calls of urbane loquacity. I will endeavor, without ambiguity, to speak my mind and lay bare the fundamental flaws I find apparent, and convey to the reading public at-large the depths of disgust I now feel. When I am finished, it will be crystal clear to any sentient soul the truth of the matter, and, impassioned by my cutting invective, they shall rise up and cry aloud in unison "No more!"
I hope you can discern the lengths to which I have attempted to show restraint in this matter. I am not merely interested in reiterating the usual editorial prattle; rather, I am only concerned with bringing to light a perceived problem, and attempt to change preconceived notions for the betterment of all concerned. It is my sincere wish that what I have humbly offered is a point at which fruitful discussion can progess, and we can at last all reach the sort of rapprochement that any enlightened society yearns for.
Kindly but firm regards,

EDITORIAL REPLY
Dear Sirs,
Regarding my editorial reply of 11-30-08, it would seem I made a slight error in my letter to you, in that I mistakenly forgot to include the actual issue I was complaining about, as well as the solution to the problem. Such an egregious error of omission is obviously quite embarrassing, particularly since the grave issue I was considering, and the solution I wished to implement, was and is extremely crucial to our society; in fact, it is the crux of all the world's problems, and possibly life itself as we know it.
Rest assured, such an error will not occur again.

Dear Editor,
It has finally been forcefully brought to my attention by four and twenty blackbirds singing in my ear that a certain issue of the Downer has scandalously and scurrilously misused berries in a Sauron pie.
Sauron obviously would have a steak and kidney pie, being so full of blood thirsty aggression.
What culinary error will we see next? Mount Doom full of exploding cheese?
As for that mutant piano that is stalking TP, I think rather than attacking the victim with claims of mental illness--a common device of journalism of whatever colour--davem or lal of the Yard needs to interview Estelyn Telcontar. I've heard that she can make those keys fly.

While it is true that Americans get their best political news from comedy shows, I don't think this British comic gives us reliable news.
For instance, I'm sure this issue is not about suspicious old Bob at all. I think it is about suspicious old Squatter or suspect old Rimbaud who surrupticiously just pop in and then drop off the Downs at random shots.
Not meaning to imply that I think P&A is reliable in any predicable way. :p

I'll have to have strong words with my newsagent. The paper boy has probably nicked it again...

There was going to be a potatorama CD, but it melted in the microwaves the staff thought were cupboards.

This may be the cause of the 'mysterious fire'. I hear if you put a CD in a microwave, it'll create sparks.

I'm just wondering if this Barrow-Downs tabloid shares features with some other tabloids?
Like a Denethor's Photo Case Book, The 3am Orcsies, Bungo Bingo, but hopefully not Page 3 with Gandalf's fondness for uncloaking

They tried getting models for the page three thing, but Gandalf always managed to get in all the photos. He's a crafty one!

Gross? I found nothing gross or disturbing in P&A this time. What a let down. :D
Nice wallpaper by the way, it's always interesting to see Barrow-Wight home decor. Mine's better though, I should post that picture I drew of it...

Editorial Reply
Dear Editorial Staff:
I must highly protest your use of an alleged 'poem' by that arrogant Dark Elf fellow in your Christmas edition of the 'Downer. Such impertinence is uncalled for, and sullies the Holiday tradition! This is a time of year for rampant spending and teaching children the essential tools of business: greed, dishonesty and ingratitude. There should be no levity or parody surrounding such a blessed event as the largest quarterly household expenditure on retail merchandise for the fiscal year.
As far as the parody itself, I prefer the original "Night Before Christmas" as it sets the proper marketing tone with dreams of toys swimming about in addled TV-addicted children's heads. It is a veritable toy commercial read by parents to their children at bedtime, and it doesn't cost advertisers a red cent! And what established poet rhymes particular with vehicular? It is preposterous nonsense!
Sincerely,
Morthoron the Moriquendi

Although I'm pretty sure that what they are saying makes no sense in any language, I'd suspect that this is somewhat loosely based on some Germanic language. At least the "mitt" in the sign gives me the idea that this crazy language had verbs similar to German ones, in this case "mittkruspmoren" or something like that. :D

Alright, I'll tell you. It's the lyrics to Kraftwerk's Das Model played backwards. My brother, Matt (animator and voices of Fungoltch and Schmurt), thought this was funnier than my idea of reading out random bits from every language on an electrical instruction manuel. :D
Well, it's Friday and it's Phantom and Alien time!

On Monday it's 50TH EPISODE TIME!! Yep, we're almost half way through volume two already! After episode 50 goes up, there may be a short break of some other comics not in this story. Exploring the Phantom and Alien's previous attempts at fame.

Wait, nooo! So they're all dead?
We didn't exactly see them die, all we saw was a scenario where they almost certainly perished, which is not the same thing as dying. This means that there might be a good chance that the Hoody Cloaky group will return! Yeah! :D

The conclusion to this 'exciting' adventure will be shown on Friday. On Monday there will be a brief 'previously on The Phantom and Alien' strip and the following week we'll be back into the story.
Hope you enjoy it!

" Is believed to have been similar to photosynthesis"
Not only is that the weirdest escape of all time; but also the best! I will have to try it sometime.
I am going to have to use that as an excuse for everything. It will join the Barrow-Downs Quote Hall of Fame (and active vocabulary) that TheGreatElvenWarrior and I have put together.
That was an excellent article by the way, very...informative. I never really 'got' the idea Wednesdays either, they should be moved to in between Saturday and Sunday.
