I've searched but so far haven't found a specific
name. Perhaps someone else can find it?

Nilpaurion Felagund
05-17-2006, 07:59 PM
It's Ancalimë.

Oh, and the thread is yours. :)

Tuor of Gondolin
05-18-2006, 05:52 AM
Thanks. So, who named the tree Ancalime?
And was it in the Silmarillion or UT?

And a new item is available for guesses.

Numenorean
05-18-2006, 07:32 AM
Well I'm a bit slow with this Tuor, but Anardil Aldarion names the tree in Unfinished Tales (P.202 of my edition):

"In its slow Elven growth it was yet but twelve feet high, straight, slender, youthful, now budded with its winter flowers upon upheld branches pointing to the sky. It recalled to him his daughter, and he said: 'I will call you also Ancalimë. May you and she stand so in long life, unbent by wind or will, and unclipped!'

And for the current question: Is it sentient?

Tuor of Gondolin
05-18-2006, 08:21 AM
Is it sentient?
Yes.

P.S. I was thinking the actual tree
Aldarion was alluding to was one different from
the elf gift, a native of Numenor that they encountered
when out riding. Thanks for the note, Numenorean .

Firefoot

Yes. This is tricksy, precious. They canst figure

;) We likes tricksy questions, yes.

Does it have a gender (not is it known; does it have one)?

Does it have a gender (not is it known; does it have one)?

Is it a single living thing rather than a group?

Is it in the Sil?

Tuor of Gondolin
05-31-2006, 10:29 AM
Cheap question...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it in the Sil?

Actually a rather good question. But I don't have The
Silmarillion with me so I'll have to check later to see
whether I located the topic there or in another work,
and if I didn't find it in The Silmarillion, is a mention also in
The Silmarillion.

Tuor of Gondolin
06-01-2006, 05:30 AM
Okay. I've checked Firefoot 's question and,
as far as I can see it's not in The Silmarillion. I
found the reference in another work.

Btw, as a general rule I think it would be too easy
and mechanical to allow questions as to what book
something is in, since it could progress to "Is it in a
given chapter?", "Between pages so-and-so?", etc. But
in this case I'd say it's a valid line of question, especially
since the group/incident I'm thinking of is only mentioned,
as far as I can determine, in one not overly obvious place,
although it is a valid bit.

Third Age? Yes. Highly probable.
First Age? No.
Second Age? Yes.
Man (as in race)? No.
Living? Yes.
Elf? No.
Dwarf? No.
Auinu? No.
Olvar? No.
Ent? Nope.
Snow-men of Forochel No.

Does it have a gender (not is it known; does it have one)?
Yes. It/they do.
Is it a single living thing rather than a group? No. It's a group.
Was any part of it ever in Numenor?
Yes. At least some of the group was definitely in Numenor.
Are the members of the group able to talk? Yes.
In The Silmarillion? No.

Firefoot
06-01-2006, 05:37 AM
I don't think it's ever gotten quite that specific. Asking about the book is usually about as specific as I've seen it go. :)

Not in the Sil, then... UT?

I hope so...

Tuor of Gondolin
06-01-2006, 05:41 AM
Not in the Sil, then... UT?
YES!

But it's still tricksy. If you're trawling for it be warned, it took
me almost half an hour yesterday to "refind" it.

Firefoot
06-01-2006, 10:20 AM
Peachy... (strange word, that.)

Did any of the group ever have contact with Aldarion?

Tuor of Gondolin
06-01-2006, 10:33 AM
Did any of the group ever have contact with Aldarion?

As the elves might say, both yes and no.
Let's say a subset of the group did, but I'm
thinking of another event involving a subset of the group,
and not including all of the former group that had contact
with Aldarion. (wish I knew what I just said) :)

Look. It happened later! :D

ENORMOUS HINT (well, sort of)
What was the nature of this group? Who were they?

Firefoot
06-01-2006, 11:25 AM
Hm...

Are they a group because of what sort of thing (creature? race?) they are?

Tuor of Gondolin
06-01-2006, 12:29 PM
Are they a group because of what sort of thing (creature? race?) they are?
Yes. They're all of the same race.

But what could it be, we wonders. Isn't man, or hobbit,
or nassty elves with bright swords, or entses,
or Snow-men's, is it, preciouss?

Firefoot
06-01-2006, 12:57 PM

Tuor in Gondolin
06-03-2006, 08:54 AM
Are they significant in any wars?
As the elves would say, both yes and no. :D

They are enemies and fighters against especially orcs, but
I don't believe there are reports that they ever
fought in large scale wars.

Are they Spiders?
No.

Firefoot

The Druedain?

Tuor in Gondolin

The Druedain?

Yes. And yes.
But a more specific answer is required. :)

The Druedain that came west with the Atani?

The Saucepan Man
06-03-2006, 11:01 AM

The Druedain?

Yes.Eh?

That prevented me asking this a long time ago.

Tuor in Gondolin
06-03-2006, 11:21 AM
Man (as in race)? No.

Quote:
The Druedain?

Yes.

Eh?

I understand. But it seemed to me to answer "yes"
would have been more deceptive. Even in UT
it seems a grey area. While they were admitted to the rank of the Atani,
it also says: The strangest of all the customs of the Folk of Haleth was the presence among them of people of a wholly different kind, the like of which the other Atani had evers een before....(and) They were considered a race apart. Despite the views of the Elder, it seems a question whether they
were, indeed, a seperate free people. Could there even be interbreeding?

Firefoot
06-03-2006, 11:24 AM
Yeah, that's sort of what I thought, too, Sauce. The other thing that has me going is the "First Age? No."

The Saucepan Man
06-04-2006, 05:12 PM

Nilpaurion Felagund

Is it an object? No

I do have to warn you, it's a tad tricksy, this one. ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund

Is it Eru? No. :p Technically he is a person . . . I think . . . I may need one of the latter HoMEs to prove that . . .

Yes, I think it seems more like he is a person... however I wanted to check just to be sure.

Is it (or to make it more global: can it be, theoretically), hmm, in the form of sound?

Nerwen
06-11-2008, 06:55 AM
Nilp, where are you?

It can't be taking you this long to eat your own pancreas, can it?

Tuor in Gondolin
06-11-2008, 07:14 AM
Is it a a law or ban of some sort?

Nerwen
06-11-2008, 07:20 AM
Yes!

The rules are set out in the Unwritten Code of the Barrow Downs, which also states that anyone who displays ignorance of the Pancreas Eating Law shall fall under the said law's jurisdiction.

Here's a knife and fork.

Was it created by someone (other than Eru)? At first sight, Yes

(Well, there goes the tricksiness. :p )

It can't be taking you this long to eat your own pancreas, can it? Well, I had a splendidly spiced sample of my own spleen as entrée first. ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-16-2008, 05:28 PM
Is it alive?

Tuor in Gondolin
06-16-2008, 05:38 PM
#1 Is it alive?

Nope.

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-16-2008, 06:05 PM
Is it tangible?

Tuor in Gondolin
06-16-2008, 06:43 PM
#2 Is it tangible?

Good question. I'd say No.

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-16-2008, 07:27 PM
Interessant . . .

Was it created?

Tuor in Gondolin
06-16-2008, 08:57 PM
#3 Was it created?

Somewhat difficult to answer, certainly not as a yes
or no answer. I'd say "it" isn't created as such,
although it's particular existence in the "story" is
related to some creation. (Ooh, that sounds oracular
enough to be at Delphic)! And when the answer is
revealed, rather mundane.

TheGreatElvenWarrior
06-16-2008, 08:58 PM
Is it round?

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-16-2008, 09:00 PM
So it's not a law, nor a music, nor a tale (the written account, ich meine) . . .

Hmmm, did it exist during, say, the First Age?

Tuor in Gondolin
06-16-2008, 10:45 PM
So it's not a law, nor a music, nor a tale (the written account, ich meine) . . .
Correct.

#4 Hmmm, did it exist during, say, the First Age?
No. Not during the First Age.

Nerwen
06-16-2008, 10:56 PM
Did it exist during the Second Age?

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-17-2008, 02:38 AM

06-17-2008, 03:44 PM

Nope.

I'd say it's too soon for specific guesses.

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-17-2008, 11:46 PM
Did this ethereal 'it' come into contact with any of the Valar?

Tuor in Gondolin
06-18-2008, 08:09 AM
#7
No.

And a clarification: the "it" is rather
pedestrian, and while insubstantial,
is tangible. Sorry for possible confusion,
but I'm trying to be accurate without
giving too much away.
(Hint, granted a tiny one) Hmm, not in the
First or Second Age,so what Age
could it be?

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-18-2008, 10:22 PM
Hmm, not in the
First or Second Age,so what Age
could it be? (tuor)

So it could be in the Third Age, Fourth Age, or the time before the Ages. :p

Is it, perhaps, a wind of some sort?

Is it, perhaps, a wind of some sort?
Not a wind as such, but you're on the right track.
You might say it can be wind assisted.
====================================

#9 The Deeps of time?
No. Much more mundane.

Nilpaurion Felagund
06-19-2008, 06:57 PM

Nerwen

Good question. I'd say No.

Tuor in Gondolin

Okay. I give up.
The subject was Fili's
being tortured by the smell of apples.

I hope I never smell the smell of apples again!
To smell apples everlastingly when you can scarcely
move and are cold and sick with hunger is maddening.
I could eat anything in the wide world now, for hours
on end- but not an apple!

Someone else please take over.
