It works just like a forest does. You can touch/see/feel individual trees. They are there. But "forest" is a made-up word (almost a concept!) that is used to group all the trees that stand in a bunch. Now there could be other made up words grouping other things, can't there?

And thank you about the kittens...you think I'd be used to it by now, as we live out in the country, and we get all kinds of stray/dropped off pregnant cats, whose kittens end up dying because the mother was sick...at least this year, we've only lost 3, last summer we lost a dozen because some wild animal got into the barn where the strays were and attacked them...that was horrible. :(
