Welcome Pippy and Raewyn, enjoy your deaths! (Don't panic, that's a good thing ;) )

Hello! My name is Melannen. I'm new (doh). I'm trying to get a hang of this forum thing and how to send messages. (This is so cool.)

I'm new to the whole online Tolkien world. I never thought you could talk about books so much. But God, I love doing it. I'm new to the books as well, and my friends can't get me to shut up. Compared to what you guys talk about, my stuff is common knowledge. I love this!

Hi there and thank you all for welcoming me in such a warm way.
I'm very happy to be just dead and to have heard some sweet chanting chorus just on the left of the mist in Barrow dows... Your voices awaked me from a spellbound sleep and are leading me to the light...
 xxx, Sabry

Melannen, welcome to Tolkien and to the 'Downs! Don't worry about your level of knowledge, there are all levels active here, and the old farts should appreciate fresh viewpoints. The members of this site are really friendly and helpful! PM anybody if you have any questions.

Raewyn, are you sure you need to worry about your English? You have a very poetic turn of phrase...have you thought about joining an RP? Look the RP forums over! You'd be an asset.

Greetings and Salutations Raewyn and Melannen, you've come to the right place and I'm sure you'll find your lodgings very comfortable. :p

Hi JennyHallu and thank you so much...

What you said means that I'm on the right way with my hard work on this beautiful language I try to practice as much as I can (reading, writing, watching dvds in original language, internet and so on)

But I think that to say you really know a language you need to speak, read, write, think, dream and "feel" in this language;
as far as concerning the first 5 things, I can say I'm not that bad at them, but about "feeling" in English... uhmmm I cannot say that, yet...
I think I should spend some time in an English speaking country to start feeling in your amazing language, thus many terms and most of all, sentence and speech constructions would come out automatically and quite perfectly matching what I really feel and want to communicate...
I don't know If I could have really explaned what I mean...

Anyway, thank you very much for what you said, it encourages me and helps me to carry on...

I won't dare to partecipate a RP yet... Also 'cause I've never joined RP even in Italian... give me time, please...ah ah ah

I saw from your signature that you love Loreena too... she's one of my favourite musician... absolutely terrific and very talented.
Have a great day!!!
xxx, Sabry :D

Actually, Raewyn, my signature is from a poem by Keats. I didn't know anyone sang it until I made it my signature...

Anyway...Welcome again, and I'm wandering off before the chat skwerl eats me.

Hello and thanks for the welcome to both JennyHallu and Boromir!

This place is huge, and I'm overwhelmed. Any suggestions on where to start?

Hookbill the Goomba

Any suggestions on where to start?

Middle Earth Mirth is a fun place to get started. Its the most informal of the forums and good for beginners, but you'll still have to play your cards right. :)
In Mirth, the four words you'll here most (apart from "Oh shut up, Hookbill") will be: Gandalf, Uncloaked, Mount, and Zoom.

Enjoy! :D

Feanor of the Peredhil
04-22-2006, 03:02 PM
Oh, Mel, dear, ignore young Hookbill, here. He'll suck you right into Mount Zoom if you aren't careful. ;)

Suggestions depend on what you're interested in. If you like to write, check out the RP forums. The Green Dragon is in the Shire and the Eorling Mead Hall is in Rohan; both are good places to go, but I'm admittedly prejudiced in favor of the Hall. If you're feeling ambitious and argumentative, head to Books. It'll teach you to argue at the level of college research papers if you get the right people up against you. You'll find a lot of laughter in Mirth, basic questions answered in Novices and Newcomers.

Like I said, it's all up to what you feel like doing.

Welcome also to Raewyn. No worries on your English, love, you've got a better grasp of it than most of my native-speaker friends.

Glirdan
04-22-2006, 03:24 PM
Or if you don't like Mirthy stuff or RPG's, try you head at Quotable Quotes or the Quiz Room. However, I don't suggest not looking into the Mirth or the RPG forums. Both are always good for a lauhg, brain teasers and just all around fun. Make sure to join in a Werewolf game to try your hand at playing and, once you feel your up to it, mod your own game. Welcome to the Downs Mel! :D

Raewyn
04-22-2006, 06:32 PM
Actually, Raewyn, my signature is from a poem by Keats. I didn't know anyone sang it until I made it my signature...

Anyway...Welcome again, and I'm wandering off before the chat skwerl eats me.

 ooops, I've never realized that "The Stolen Child" is by W.B. Yeats. I've always listened to this poem as a song, sang by Loreena McKennitt.
Thank you so much for telling me and have a great night and chat.

For all the others who want to enjoy this magic poem:

THE STOLEN CHILD
WHERE dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water-rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berries
And of reddest stolen chetries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's morefull of weeping than you
can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim grey sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances,
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's morefully of weeping than you
can understand.

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,.
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To to waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For to world's morefully of weeping than you
can understand.

Away with us he's going,
The solemn-eyed:
He'll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast,
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal-chest.
For be comes, the human child,
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
from a world more full of weeping than you.

Hi......Not sure if I'm posting in the right place here, but here I am :)

I live in the north east of England, Amble, with my Husband Brian and our pet pooch TJ. We live right on the coast but half surrounded by hills and valleys at the same time and the sight of all of this really feels like home to me, and I wouldn't be anywhere else but here. I am origanally Nottingham born, about 50 or 60 miles outside of London and wild horses couldn't get me to go back to live there again, I am home :)
Hugs.

You arrive at a most wonderful time! We're celebrating the Downs' sixth birthday! Now you share a 'Death Day' *giggles*

Cool :) the world indeed is a small but most truely wonderful a place to be and so I thank you for your most gracious welcome to me :) May I ask if you will ease my mind of a worry that is begining to grow there? If you can my worry is this *I was reading a thread about problem posts if you will, and I did then begin to think to myself 'do I dare add my postings now' as this thread was read to me as quite strict? There is no other place I would rather visit and be happy to treat with many and have a fun time but at the same time don't want to worry about making sure I am correct.

Hugs.

:) Thank you Kath for your advise and lovely welcome. As this is new to me I thought I would go and read up on the rules, try to stick by the guide lines and when I began to read them thats when I started to become weary about my choice to enter a world I've only read about and watched often. Thanks again for keeping me right :)

I'm Loki.

I elect not to divulge my age, occupation, or most pertient biological information relevant to this thread. However, my character information is welcome to be viewed by all.

I'm a fan of Tolkien's work, but I was primarily brought to this website by a friend to RP and play within the "Tol-in-Gaurhoth" boards in Middle-Earth Mirth.

I'm a accomplished writer by a number of standards, both official and otherwise. I play entirely too many video games, and indulge within almost the full gamut of geekery. Tabletop gaming (i.e.- D&D/Mage for starters...), RPGS, RPing, Reading, Writing ('Rithmatic...), a number of physical acivities (I'm remarkably good-looking for a geek.), anime, manga, hard music (Rock/metal), intelligent conversation, and intelligence. Much of my writing is satire. I'm more sarcastic than you are.

I absolutely despise stupidity in all of its forms. I'm not a terribly nice person. I like to **** with peoples' heads. Many people think that I'm quite evil. Some see me as one of the nicest people that they've ever met. It all depends on your viewpoint, I suppose, and whether or not you're wise enough to read deeply enough into what I'm really saying. Satire, like I said.

I'm always right about everything. This could either be true, or it may merely seem thus from my wisdom to recognize situations where I could be wrong or do not know the answer, and refuse to comment. It's a mystery. I believe that my introduction has provided enough detail to give most a relatively thorough impression of my personality, but it has, I'm certain, left a large bit of information about myself missing. You're to gather that for yourself.

Hello! I have returned so that I may get back into the swing of being happily dead. My old user name was Rilwen Gamgee (plenty of you may not remember me as one of the "well-known" Barrow-Downers), but I departed my barrow for too long (almost a year!) and almost re-joined the land of the living. A few days ago, I decided to visit here and see how things changed, and I realized how much I terribly miss this place. "Well, I'm back"; it is very comforting to see so many familiar faces. :)

Hi! Call me Valandil. I hope to get to know some of you here and have some interesting discussions. This is my first day here. Recently I missed two weeks of work due to illness. I was so incredibly bored and restless that I decided to read a book, something I haven't done for pleasure since that pleasure was beaten out of me in graduate school. *grins* Well, I've had The Lord of the Rings on my shelf for.... wow, I don't even know.... so I decided to read it to pass the time. I read all 1000 plus pages, and less than halfway through I really couldn't believe I'd never bothered to read it when I was younger. I am sincerely impressed with Tolkien's work. I read The Hobbit (quite quickly... seemed to be a children's book) and now I'm working on The Simarillion (which is the exact opposite of The Hobbit in terms of reading difficulty, as I'm sure everyone here already knows). All the character names and new terms are a bit overwhelming, but I'm intrigued... I feel somewhat like a sponge soaking up very flavorful water. So, I'm happy to be here. Hello to all!

Silly school and wanting to graduate kept me away, but now I'm on vacation so I can post as much as I want. (Except when I'm working, which will be a fair amount, but other than that I'll be here.)

Hey all, I used to frequent the downs some time ago. Due to me not having a computer it has been a while. It is a great site for any Tolkien fan. I've always found the users here to be highly informative, interesting, funny, and wise beyond their years. lol. Any ways, looking forward to spending time here. As far as me enjoying being newly deceased... well you can just call me Jerry Garcia cause I sure am Grateful to be Dead. lol. I'm looking forward to interesting conversations with you all. Nice siggy, Rombout ;) I'm yet to decide on a really good one...

Right. Erm...well, I'm a new member (thank you, Captain Obvious) from that little island floating rather self-importantly in the North Atlantic, England, who, to tell the honest truth, is actually drawn more by the prospect of role playing games on this site than by Tolkien discussion <hangs head in shame> It looks, seriously, alot more professional than on, well, pretty much any of the other sites I've looked at - that ain't just an idle compliment, I've read a couple of the RPGs here and they reach dizzy heights of internet writing, even without being compared to "teh adevnturs of froddo and his p33ps". Dear lord above, spare us the pain of leet-speaking hobbits.

Anyway, I hope to be around for a bit, even if I don't have much time to post at the moment - and if I find the time, I'd love to join one of the games too. But until that illusive time when free time becomes a realistic prospect, you may get used to me wandering around aimlessly in the background! :)

JennyHallu

Hey welcome, new folkses...

Lai, if you're interested in RPs but have little time right now, I suggest you try either the Golden Perch or the Mead Hall. Both of these are fairly informal in format, and require either as much or as little dedication of time as you please: you should be able to write a character who need be present only when you have the time to devote to him or her. Also a great way to build relationships with other writers here for when you do have the time to commit to a full game.

Laiudanama
07-02-2006, 09:36 AM
Jenny - Thanks, I might try that; last time I came to the Downs, there was the Green Dragon there in place of the Golden Perch, and thus the appearance of a discussion thread kinda confused me! But thanks, maybe I'll stop by and have my first sup of Barrowdowns ale :)

07-23-2006, 04:59 AM
Ciao everyone,
my name's bradamante , I'm posting from Italy. I can't speak a good english nor understand it very well so I beg you pardon in advance for all the mistakes and troubles that I'll cause...

I'm studing Biotechnology at university, just finished my second year.
I'm fond on tolkien writings, almost all my hobbies are connected to this: actually I'm ending a shirt of mail, like Bilbo's one ( strange hobby for strange girl ) and I'm reading the Lotr in its original language.
This morning I began chap.8, first book, and surfing the net I discovered this forum...
Well, here Bradamante introducing herself, see you on next post folks!

Kath
07-23-2006, 04:41 PM
Welcome to the Downs bradamante, and don't worry about your English. If I could speak Italian even half as well as you can speak my language I would, well, probably faint in amazement but you get the point.

Anyway, have fun, get stuck in!

Nogrod

Oh you newly deceased!

Just enjoy your life here!

Join the quizz-room or the Books-section if you are hard-core Tolkienists or just stick to the Mirth-section if you like to have good fun, werefolfing and RPG'ing. Or take all, which is the best option.

And do not dare away from the sophisticated discussions on some threads. What I myself have seen in this half-a-year of mine is the great tolerance about everywhere here. So just ask and state your points, they will be resounded and taken in to the consideration.

Feel at home now as you have entered the spell-zone from which you will not be able to get away, anyway, anymore... :)

PS. And Bradamante, do not hesitate because of the language, there are many of us non-native English-speakers... We have been tolerated here, so you will be too. And day by day, you too learn to write better... Remember: the more you write the better you come with it.

Gil-Galad
07-24-2006, 06:57 AM

Smaug reborn
07-25-2006, 02:18 PM
What a great idea! The perfect excuse for a newbi to compose their first post :)

Well hi there..... I'm Smaug reborn, you can call me Smaug as I assume the user of this handle is unlikely to be too active (I'm open to correction on that!). The reason I'm using the name of the great dragon himself? Well I've had a fixation with dragons for as long as I can remember, it may well have sprung from my first reading of The Hobbit, or Lord of the Rings.... frankly I don't remember! But I do know that it was such a fixation I had a bl**dy big one tattooed on my back, and another on my chest whilst going through my rebellious teen phase :)
I've ever since I had it done felt it was a representation of my secret personality, drawing more on the reputed wiseness and experience of the dragon folk, rather than the somewhat nastier evil elements, though it doesn't hurt to have a bit of fire in your belly once in a while either I'd say! :) So it felt appropriate.

I'm a huge Tolkien fan, though not as knowledgeable about the books as no doubt some are on here.... I blame them for my absolutely voracious devouring of Science fiction and fantasy literature since about the age of 7.... My library is ever growing and long may it remain so (I'll be most interested to talk to some "hard" Sci fi fans, think William Gibson, Peter Hamilton, Iain M Banks sorta thing) If they're on here.... especially if you have recommendations ;)
I'm currently working my way through the trilogy again though, having just purchased it for about the 10th time in my life (has anyone else noticed that this appears to be the book that most often goes awol from their collection? Or is it just me!)

I also just purchased the lovely box set of the extended films..... bloody great, and I got it cheep too :) So my interest in Tolkien is peaking again at the moment.

Outside of reading... I'm playing with the idea of writing my own book (pages of notes on idea's, characters, themes, general ramblings about life at the moment but not a lot more..... I will though!) I'm a keen artist (currently creating stuff in a very graphic novel style, but bigger and based on a portrait sorta philosophy) I play trumpet (I so wish I was good enough to play jazz..... oh I can dream!)and.... well I suppose run my business providing quality beverages to the masses :D

There you go, a potted introduction to me.... I look forward to speaking to you all!

Glirdan
07-25-2006, 02:24 PM
Well Smaug, that was definetly an intoduction!! :D Because of you're writing, I suggest checking out the RPG forums and the WW games that happen (they're kind of on hiatus right now, but I'm still leaving my thread open for any newcomers! :D ). Smaug reborn
07-25-2006, 02:28 PM
Possibly over the top?

Ah well.... I kinda came on here to talk, might as well start as I meen to go on eh! :)

Hello Glirdan anyway... nice to meet you ;) I suspect I'll be showing my ignorance if I ask what particular character/influence your names derived from?

Cheers for the welcome!

Glirdan
07-25-2006, 02:33 PM
Not at all. :) ;) It is purely and wholy the Sindarin (I believe) translation of my real name.

Oh and your intro wasn't over the top. It shows me (at least) that you have a lot of enthusiasm and would be perfect for an RPG. So try it out and do try to join a Werewolf game.

Smaug reborn
07-25-2006, 02:53 PM
I kinda found this forum after doing a search for "the continuing story of middle earth" or some such on Google, so you might be right about the RPG thing... once I've settled in anyway!

I've always found it curious that so many people have written in "The style of Tolkien" or "In remembrance of" or "Inspired by"..... etc....
And yet as far as I know, no-one has ever attempted to continue the stories of characters beyond the ring stories. This might be ignorance on my part? As in its happened and I haven’t noticed, or it could be that someone’s protecting the rights like nothing you've ever seen? Or perhaps that no-one dares coss Tolkien was so damn good they just don't think it'd be right?
I'd be interested to hear peoples thought on that one..... though I'm guessing its been discussed before if I trawl the forum for long enough....

I've no intention of trying it myself until much more comfortable I'd have to say :( I'd feel a fraud!

Glirdan
07-25-2006, 03:13 PM
I suggest, if you want to find out more about that, to create a thread yourself or do a search and see if you can find a thread that has been previously started on that subject. However, if you start a thread, some of the older members might include a link to a topic that has disappeared for quite some time.

The Tolkien Estate, basically his family, does hold the copyrights to his works, so the only permissable continuation of Tolkien stories is in fan fictions that are non-commercial. There are some good stories on our own Barrow-Downs Fan Fiction Site (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi) and on other Tolkien sites - the quality of fan fictions is varied, but you'll find some that are well worth reading.

If you don't feel ready to write in an RP story, you might enjoy reading some of them first. Whatever you choose, I hope you'll enjoy yourself here on the Downs!

Ahhh, thought it might be something like that, after all, it's just about the only truly great trilogy I can think of that hasn't had several inferior attempts at sequels written.... I knew it couldn't be entirely out of respect!

I don't think I'll ever attempt it myself, though I will most definitely pop over and read some of the contributions on here! ;) I think the most I'm ever likely to do is the required "Inspired by....." type quote when my book goes global...

Though I'd mucho love to read further stories of middle earth in print, I don't think I'd like the idea of inferior quality, and since the man himself is dead.... well :(

Thanks once again for the welcome... there's some GREAT stuff on this forum!

... but as I was never too active and it's been a while since I was last spotted in the downs.

So, Im Mirky, name doesn't relate to Legolas. 21 years old, business studies student in German, originally from Bulgaria... Tolkien fan since I remember myself - even if it may not be so long (read LotR when I was about 9ish). I like to read - Terry Pratchett, Michael Chriton, David Morrell, Douglas Adams to name a few... No really exciting hobbies, mainly due to like no time between uni, job and some RL for taste.

That's enough for now, looking forward to meeting the newer of you and seeing the 'old' faces again.

Greetings, all! I am Leia Tinuviel. I am already a member of the Barrow-Downs Fan-Fiction site, so I thought that it might be nice to join here too. I have been crazy about Tolkien ever since I saw the movies for the first time a couple of years ago, and even more so a little while later after I read the book. It is my absolute favorite!!! My favorite movies too!!! Merry and Pippin are my favorite characters, and I absolutly love Hobbits!!!
I am homeschooled and going into eighth grade this year, and hope to someday be an author. God Bless!

Hello! This looks like a fun place to spend one's afterlife...

I've been a Tolkien fan since I read the Hobbit (20 years ago) and LOTR (19 years ago). Reread many times since, and no other book has taken their place in my heart. The PJ movies were the only movies I went to the trouble to watch in the theatre since my kids were born. Though the movies weren't perfect (I think I'm too much of a Tolkien fan to ever be fully satisfied with a film version), they are definitely up there among my favorite movies of all time. (Besides, there are two actors I like very much in them...and you'll never guess who!)
About me...I'm a divorced (well, not officially yet) mom of 3 girls and am back in college now, finishing up my Bachelor's: major in Studio Art & minor Media and Society, then it's on to grad school. My hobbies etc. are art (of course), gardening, reading & movies (I'm a sucker for fantasy & sci-fi, and a MP fan), backpacking, and spending way too much time on the internet.

Rune Son of Bjarne

Welcome Rikae

I hope that you will enjoy your stay in this humble Barrow. I think that you should be able to get you need to discus both movies and books here. . . If you like the more silly kind of fun, then Mirth will surely be the place place for you to be.

Sleepy Ranger

Welcome aboard Rikae! If you can ever find the time do check out Quotable Quotes. I doubt you'd find anyone here who is satisfied with the movies but we like them all the same. Uh... well at least a bit at any rate. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

Kath

Welcome to the Downs Rikae.

If you weren't entirely satisfied with the films you might want to check out the Sbs threads, as those take them apart pretty ruthlessly but praise what was good as well.

Might I ask what MP is?

Sleepy Ranger
08-25-2006, 01:21 PM
In my fields MP would be, Magic Points/Mana or Multi-Player. (though I doubt anyone uses MP as a reference for that)

Of course MP could mean a bunch of other things but from her interests I'd say its Metroid Prime. Since I'm not sure how someone'd fall in love with MP unless they were a wizard...

Hi, I just found your forums today, decided you were the best site I've seen so I signed up. I have read the books (hobbit, silmarillion, LOTR) long before the LOTR movies came out, and the movies kind of revived the middle-earth fanatic in me. I'm not great with details, as it has been a while scince I read the books, but I will contribute what I can.

Thanks for you answers and feedback to my future questions!

Hilde Bracegirdle

I saw from your signature that you love Loreena too... she's one of my favourite musician... absolutely terrific and very talented.

...And now she's changed her sig... what was it? I do like Loreena.

Raewyn, What instrument do you play, and what type of music? Are you tempted to try some Tolkienish music? (If you're into Loreena, you may already play Celtic, or so I'm guessing.) There are musical discussion threads on the Downs, let me know if you'd like some links.

Well, I never believed I would eventually join the Downs.
This is all Lommy's fault (can I hear her laughing somewhere?), and I must confess that now she has brainwashed me, too.

Though I wouldn't be here if I didn't love Tolkien, no matter how hard she would have tried.

And yes, I really can't speak English that well, please try to understand.
