Hey, welcome everybody (who I haven't wlcomed yet)!! I get on every once in a while, and I usually don't list everybody I haven't welcomed yet. So don't be offended or anything. Have fun on the Downs forum site, and try not to get too addicted! :p

I just noticed that there are some "Icons" that I haven't seen before. How often does the Downs get or change features like the Icons?) That happens very rarely - most of the icons were created by The Barrow-Wight in the early days of the forum. Occasionally, a member creates a new one and offers it for use - see this thread (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=10618) for more. We've averaged one a year the past two years...
Koneko
09-20-2005, 09:15 AM
Ello!
I'm Koneko, an Essexian from the Desert of No Writing Circles (as I currently call my hometown.) Can't say I'm a complete LoTR fanatic, since the first decent fantasy book I picked up (at the age of twelve, adult fantasy :) ) was Anne McCaffrey. As a result I refuse to write a dragon as a main character, since I will never write them to my satisfaction.
I hate the Harry Potter books. I though I might get that out of the way first. They are walking cliches - and if that offends anyone, I apologise. However, I like the fanfiction, and the films are alright.
I call myself a "werd". That's a writing nerd. =^_^= Kinda fitting, since I've started to write my story in my college notebook. I've got pages marked "S" littered through it... werdish. :) And I'm reading "Unfinished Tales" at the minute. o.O . Turin is such a poor tortured person... but I still want to know how Glorfindel got from probably-dead-Balrog-slayer-in-Gondolin to elf-at-Rivendell. :|
Do I need anymore here? *worry*

Greetings! My name is Eriathwen and I am new. I hope I will get to know everyone here better soon, they seem like very nice people!
About myself...I am a girl ( many of the people on the other chat rooms I visit thought I was a guy at first because I neglected to tell them this)and am obsessed with Aragorn. Also I love to write and thus am eagerly awaiting the chance to participate in the RPGs here. Sme other things I am planning to do...maybe walk to Rivendell (walking...now there's a sport for me!!), and, well, just have fun I guess! :p
It would be really great if anyone had any advice or comments in general that they wanted to share with me. I promise to be a faithful member, my experience so far has been great! *looks around, sits down on a bench in the darkest corner in a blatant Strider imitation. Hi Eriathwen, welcome amongst the dead in the downs.
First i would like to say: good idea, to tell your gender at once. To often mistakes are made witch are allways imbaresing.
Advice: I don't no, if you have any question just pm, people in the downs I find is very helpfull. Just take your time reade some of the threads. Consider joining the wwj II game ! (read about it in Mirth).

10-13-2005, 07:13 PM
Welcome Eriathwen, hope you enjoy yourself here. As Rune said good idea in mentiong your gender, always avoids embarassing mistakes from us. As for tips, again as Rune said, consider joining a WWJ game. Doesn't have to be this one, you could wait a bit and since you like RPG's, Werewolf is kind of like an RPG. If you want to join an RPG, I suggest talking to pio or Child of the 7th Age for more information on that. But have fun amonst the dead!! :D ;) :smokin:

Hello! Wow! I haven't been to The Barrow-Downs since, hmmm....January 2002 or thereabouts. It's been a long, long time. Man, I really missed hanging around with my fellow Lord of the Rings nerd pals. I actually here due to this class I'm taking Eng 160: Extreme Fictions, in which we are reading Harry Potter fan fiction. I remembered when I used to write LotR fan fiction, and it made me REALLY want to read some good ol' LotR fanfic. It's good to see that The Barrow Downs has maintained its caliber of quality. I've never submitted anything here, but I may...someday. Anyway, it's nice to be back.

Geez! Everyone is so friendly. Awesome! Yea, I was just reading over some really old, dweeby posts I wrote like sophomore year of high school. FUN! I don't know how I ever survived so long without the Downs. My friends and I used to RPG, my character was an elf named, you guessed it, Mithuial. Those were fun times. My friends and I used to have LotR banquets in which we had to remain in character and practice our Quenya and eat lembas and whatnot. I miss my old LotR obsession. I'm sure it would return if I reread the books for a fifth time. What's a thread you would recommend? Or what's your favorites?

Ignite the old flame! A little obsession is too much fun to let rot, even here, where we're dead. As for threads, if you've got quite a bit of time, reading over the Tol-in-Gaurhoth games is a hoot. Fordim Hedgethistle's poll threads are always neat for arguing, and Crazy Captions is always good for a debate. Also, alatar's recent Snow Angels thread is a zany look at Elven weight distribution.
And welcome back Elentari, as well. I remember you, or at least your name.

10-28-2005, 04:38 PM
Hrm, I understand I am suppossed to go here first. ^^;
Okay, hello all. The name's Goth Bat, and I'm pretty much a newcomer in the LoTR fandom since I finally could be bothered to rent them on DVD. Have to say I found them much more entertaining than the books (the singing started to bug me a after a couple of rounds), though it was rather annoying with everything that was left out. I immediately found myself swooning over Gríma and his Èowyn-obsession - just got a thing for slimey little pathetic guys who never gets the girl. I also for some reason found the orchs rather spiffy (squealed when I saw the girl orch), and the nazguls was just the epitome of coolness. *_*
Hope to have fun here, and learn some more about Tolkien and his universe.

Your public profile puts you at 19????? Wouldn't that be 6 years? Or are we reffering to mental age and not actual age? I'm all confused! Oh well. You're dead now... so it doesn't matter... I guess you can be whatever age you want to be...oh and concering this
ummm...there was something.....o ya, so we r like, wights? were all "dead" coooool.
you're not a wight yet... the classification of how dead you are changes as you make more posts and with time(I think)... Eventually I think you get to make up your own.

I guess I've been dead long enough to make my first welcome post here. Welcome, both Panda and Baran. You see, you already have nicknames! It's just because I'm so lazy.
A little comment on the "ranking" system. You'll become a higher rank of dead (for example wight) when you reach a certain number of posts, but not after a certain time like Celebuial said (sorry to correct you).
And it is true that age does not matter. Many great posters are adults with long experiance while others read they're first Tolkien book not long ago. Everybody is welcome and can have fun here! I'll be glad to see you on the ongoing Silmarillion Survivor thread. We need some more audience to vote!
Guess that's all... See you around!

Oh, I wasn't trying to take credit for the name-giving. Only explaining why I used them. And that goes for all of you people here, I always shorten your names, but that's only because most of you has such long and beautiful names that I can't muster the energy to spell them out ;)
One thing that would make the descent into the land of the dead easier is a list of nicknames. In the beginning it's hard to keep track of all people and nicks down here. I know I was confused.
To all new: this isn't a good post. Keep on topic. Sorry for setting such a bad example.

Yes, quite bad. Those who commit off topic posts will be forced to find a shrubbery! :p But, seriously now, off topic is bad, the mods if they notice it will try to steer the thread back in the direction it's supposed to be, but if it continues there are serious consequences.

Yes, Plastic_Panda, there are moderators here. ;)
Our handy "Barrow-meeter" Boromir88 has suggested some of the interesting forums and games here, but you should also, before you post more, find the other barometer of taste and style here. Please read carefully Estelyn Telcontar's "Guidelines for Forum Posting" (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=11805). Estelyn is the Moderator for the Books, Movies and Newbies forums and so she knows a thing or two of helpful hints for the newly dead, no matter what age they claim to be. She also guides the Chapter by Chapter discussion in the Books forum. So, in other words, she's someone who knows her way around and so is a great person to ask for advice.
And if learning from authority isn't your cup of tea, you can read over many of the threads and posts here to see the kind of discussion which the forum generates. Chatspeak and chatty posts are typically rare and not well received--people just don't like the kind of thoughtlessness which those styles demonstrate. Such sloppiness also tends to limit the kind of wit and humour which good writing makes possible --and this place is definitely about wit and humour. There's only so many times one can overuse an ! before it becomes boringly predictable, after all. ;)
And welcome also to Baranithil and Rose.

Hey hey, Plastic_Panda, Baranithil, and Rose and welcome to the 'downs! Seeing as that the majority of y'all have found your way into RPs and the Quizzes you'll soon be -so- addicted you won't want to leave... and find the smallest, shineist things amusing!-- well okay, maybe not that, but you'll fall in love with the text-hoovel we've tredged much like the rest of us.
I can't say that I've been in the forum for AGES, but I've certainly been around the people for a matter of years, and they're all truely great. Don't worry too much about those "I'm new to this whole forum" feeling because making buddies is easy after you animate those skeletons and get into the (Disco-king Boromir) groove of things here. If you have any questions about Mirth-ical matters I swear upon my sword... (of course I don't have a REAL sword yet, but those plastic toothpick ones work in this case) I will do my best to assist you.

When ever a game ends you can join the next one by stating it on the Tol-in-Gaurhoth thread, but you can't post until the current game is over. . .
I would recomend a Junior game first. There is no game right now so you can just post that you would like to join the next game, this you do in the Tol-in-Gaurhoth Junior thread. (I belive ther are 3 persons on the list for the next game)

Hello everybody! I don’t get on often, and since I don’t stay on long, I won’t take the long hours to find every new member I haven’t welcomed since I last interred the barrowdowns. So, I will just leave it at a simple welcome to all the new members that I haven’t welcomed. I’m glad to see that the downs are still running with no major changes (at least none that are noticeable to me) since I last logged on. It’s not like I’ve been gone for that long, but It has been at least a few months. Sorry I can’t add my opinion and view to any of the threads, due to my lack of time. So, to conclude, welcome newcomers! Have a good life/death (or whatever you want to consider this state of being) on the downs. And make sure that you do more in life then write post to the Barrowdowns. :)

And now comes the dreaded moment..... I'm here to introduce myself
Where to start? what to say? I guess I should start off by a warning
WARNING!!!!!! THIS GUY LOVES TO WRITE, SHOULD YOU GIVE HIM A PEN AND A PAPER OR EVEN WORSE, A COMPUTER HE MIGHT WRITE US ALL TO DEATH.... or well, back to life or what ever you guys consider a BAD consequence (but not a terrible one, I'm not THAT evil... or am I?)
Having that off my chest, I just finished reading The Silmarillion for the second time and I actually enjoyed it this time around! (I read LOTR for the first time when I was young.... can't remember how young exactly, but I don't think older than 15) and Silmarillion right after, yet I found it very confusing and didn't really enjoy it. This summer I went back to Argentina (sidenote, I'm living in Canada now) and brought back my LOTR books 'cos I missed them.... and along came the Hobbit and SIlmarillion. I devoured them in a couple of months and I enjoyed this second reading of The Silmarillion so much I decided to look for more information on the 'net.... and Lo and Behold!!! I found this place.
I should also say that I like to write stories yet I mostly do it in spanish... up until now, as I've decided to try and write some in English. I'm looking forward to hear your comments on my work
Ok, I think that's about it for now.... feel free to PM me at any time for whatever reason!! =)

Welcome Beleg (and like Thinlomien, Beleg Cuthalion is one of my favourites) and Phervasaion (or is it welcome back in this case?).
And to all of you other Downers, if any of you by chance would be missing me the coming weeks, it's because I won't have access to a computer other than on the weekends. Even if it's not very likely that you will miss me, feel some sympathy for poor me, being a trainee in a foreign town, having to live without BD ;) I'll be back soon!

anyway my favorite caracter in lotr is bilbo and then frodo i think or was it the other way round? i wish there were more fairies in lotr or some of santa's elves which i think were on holiday during the time.
sauron is quite lame. he is like a big bully zapping all the peeps of the middle-earth and the dumb valar or wtevr they're called just keep as far as they can away from the problems and laze about drinking holy wine thinking they're sum kinds of gods and are quite pathetic

Hi! I'm not a robot - I'm one of the moderators of this forum. :) Newcomers are always welcome; before you continue posting, please read the Forum FAQ (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=6010) thread and the Guidelines for Forum Posting (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=11805). That will help you to get to know the rules we have on the Barrow-Downs forum. It's also a good idea to read a few threads so that you get the general idea from others' posts, and to use the search function (top right of the page) to find answers that have already been given to your questions. If you have questions that aren't answered on those threads, please send me or one of the other moderators a PM - we'll do our best to help.

Hey there Phervasion, Beleg, Boro, and anyone else I have not mentioned. It has been a while since I have been on and posted anything. I usually check a few posts and see whats new but lately nothing has really struck me, so if any of you know some really good threads or some good discussions I could add to let me know. Either post them here or I am probably more likely to get them if you pm me, but whatever floats your boat. Well I hope all of you new kids find what you are looking for. It is a wonderful place here; surrounded by those just like you, not fearing to be called names because you have tons of action figures and posters and books, wait you guys dont have all that? ;) I am sure there are some out there thats do. Well have a good one.

12-18-2005, 12:04 PM
hello... I'm Ken
Stormy is an old nickname in my family and I often use it on message forums. It was my grandfather's nickname when he was in WWII.
I have been a fan for probably 30 years, starting when I saw The Hobbit cartoon when I was a little kid. It really took off when I was 18 and a friend lent me the LOTR books. I read them then, again when I was 25, listened to unabridged audio books while working at my job a few years ago after The Two Towers movie came out, and I am now reading them once again and starting to check out The Silmarillion. Rather then reading it from cover to cover, [Silmarillion] I find myself skipping around and reading chapters out of order. I also like to study maps of middle earth.
I think LOTR is a beautiful work of literary art, and one of the greatest of our time. Long after many pop icons of the 20th century are forgotten in time, Rings will still be celebrated like a classical overture or a Greek epic.

Welcome, stormy - and all other newcomers! You'll find plenty of people around here who agree with your opinion of LotR as a great work of literature! Look around and see where your favourite topics are being discussed and join in. If you have any questions that aren't answered in the Forum FAQ thread (at the top of the Novices and Newcomers main forum page), please feel free to send me or one of the other moderators a PM. We'll be happy to help. Hope you enjoy yourself here!

Hi all! I am new to this group, but not to Tolkien. I first read his books years ago, and have read them almost every year since. I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I have written a couple of articles recently about the symbolism of The Ring, the map of MiddleEarth and how they pertain to spiritual evolution. I'd love any feed back.

Hey everyone welcome to the Downs. Hope you enjoy it around here with all these fine dead people talking about only the best books in the world. Try out some of the The Last to First Letter Middle Earth Game (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=11946), or if you really get into it there are some quiz rooms around here somewhere that have some awesome stuff.
O and by the way, I so watched that movie today and just got on and saw that that quote was on. Empire Strikes Back.
