Yeah, yeah, another new guy. I've lurked on the forums for about two years, and I've been hitting the chat a lot recently, so I figured why not register for the site proper.

As expected, I am a rather serious _Rings_ fan; I enjou both the books and the movies, reread the trilogy (plus _The Hobbit_) about once a year, and eagerly await the extended version of ROTK.

Yeah.

Best _Rings_ forum on the 'net. You guys rock.

Love this site. I grew up with LOTR and the silmarillion. I can no longer recall how many times I've read them. I had to throw away my copy of the silmarillion the other day (kind of ironic) as It was in poor shape. But plan on buying another of course.

I'm not a newcomer to this site, but I am to the forums. I am a devoted fan to Tolkien. I am fascinated with lotr weaponry, and have been reading about it for about three years. I am a fan of poetry also. I've read a bit of Shakespeare, but not a lot. My favorite play is A Midsummer Night's Dream. I detest anime. I like gaming and art. I am an ametuer graphic design artist and have been interested in graphic design for about a year. I am fascinated with Celtic culture. Anywho, I love this sight and shall post here every day until the day I die (I hope). :o

Greetings all.

I came across this site a while ago, but sort of forgot to register. Anyway, came across it again a few days ago and I have been reading some very interesting discussions, especially in the chapter by chapter section.

I've only been into Tolkien for about two years but the depth of the mans imagination and writing style amazes me.

Other interests include vintage scooters, music of most varieties, the seas and oceans - marine life etc, British comedy and possibly some other things that escape me at the moment.

I look forward to my stay here. :)

Good day. I am unfamiliar with most of the Lord of the Rings books, however I have them all, I just don't have the time. I have seen all the movies, but as of yet, have not been able to afford the third episode.

I hope to learn more about the background of The Lord of the Rings by reading this forum.

I am new at role playing on forums as well. But I hope that I will be accepted nonetheless.

Hello out there in TV Land!!

I have been a Tolkien fan for over 25 years. My interest has come and gone in cycles over the years but has remained pretty constant since the movies came out.

I have been a pretty active member of TTF (The Tolkien Forum) for the past year and a half. Several TTF people also belong to this community and they alway speak highly of it, so I decided to drop by for a visit.

I'm also hoping to run into my old friend Maedhros. He was a mentor of mine and a fellow Scholar.

Hi, all! :)

I have just registered in the BD, although I have been browsing through its threads for quite some time. Besides, I have met some of the BD's members elsewhere and I am now glad we will be able to possibly meet here as well.

I have to say that I am strongly impressed by the knowledge and the in-depth-understanding of Tolkien and his works that I find here!
I have been studying Tolkien for almost three years now but I still consider myself just a student, and as such I have a lot of questions, that, I hope, I shall be able to find the answers to here. So ... bear with me! :o
For ... sometimes I'm just being provocative, hoping that to look upon an issue from the "opposite corner", helps for the better understanding.

Happy to meet you all! :)

It is difficult to spell!

But you can use the simple abbreviated form of Lhun.

Now, I please ask the Moderators and the Administrators here to excuse me, but though I have tried to find the answer to my previous question in the FAQ- section, and although I am more or less familiar with how VB3 works, I still could not find the option of the sub-forum-name in order to change it. I don't see it in the Profile or elsewhere.

But .... well.... after all... I'm in the Barrow-Downs now, am I not! So, I must be really 'newly deceased' to find myself here! ;)

My name is katie and i've been reading the lord of the rings and other tolkien works for about five years now. My friends at school all think i am obsessed but i'm not. i find reading a welcome release from people at school who keep trying to put me down. I managed to read the lord of the the rings for the first time in under twelve hours but none seems to believe about that apart from one boy at school who bet he could read the Order of the Pheonix faster than me. It took him six days to read it whereas it took me 5 and a half hours. he still owes me £10.

Noinkling - would that be no-inkling, or noink-ling. The latter is more fun to say, it must be said...One of those non-words that should be. Ahem. Welcome anyway, ye and your funky name.

White Lady - 10 quid on who could read a book faster?! You're making good money there, girl, I'm transfering to your school...;) Same as Lalwende, good to see another from the North West - can I ask where you're from? I'm Greater Manchester.

Newbie here. Sounds oddly like an answermachine message...welcome to the Downs, Ancalagon. And yes, friendly is certainly the word - try The Shire as well: RPGing gives a whole new flavour as well.

Lhunithiliel - I am definitely going to have problems with that one...;) Joking, welcome to the Barrowdowns, whatever your name may be!

Greetings friends! It seems that it has been forever since I last haunted the BD. :) I can not believe that I stayed away for so long. The thing that I really love about the BD is that even though I seem to be perpetually ignorant to all things Tolkien( i.e. no matter how much I learn, I have still only scratched the surface of Tolkiens depth and detail), no body treats me like a fool for not knowing what seems toi be common knowledge. ;) Y'all are great! Hey you guys,
I just found this page and thought it would be great to register:)
Firstly I have to say I'm german, so please overlook my mistakes;) 'cause school english isn't enough for writing here I think...
I'm 16 years old, female and I love the Lord of the Rings for a very long time. It started very early when I saw the books on my father's shelf and I was fascinated by the minute.
I read them again and again and the same I did with the Hobbit, the Silmarillion and other Tolkien books.
First I read them in german but I think the originals are much better, especially better than the newer translation which is really really bad. The worst thing I ever read so I stopped reading after a short time and read the originals.
I hope you understand what I'm writing and it's not too wrong but I'll do my best*promis*

I'm a newly registered, um, well, I don't know if that makes me a member, so I'm a newly registered person. I found this site through a google search reference to the "Translations from the Elvish" project, which really intrigued me, as I've been doing a small scale project of the same nature for the last two years (intermittantly). I hope I'm doing the right thing by posting here. I got kinda toasty at the only other discussion forum I've been a member of, and I hope I learned more about how to be a part of such a community. (That's not an indication that I am a troublemaker, I hope). The posts I've read here are all quite stimulating, articulate, and fun.

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

Greetings, my merry friends! :)

My mother introduced me to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books in 1973 when I was 11 years old, and I've been a great fan ever since.

Although I received a copy of the first printing of The Silmarillion for Christmas in 1977, I confess that it was many years later before I read it in its entirety. However, I've now read it through about seven times and enjoy it more with each successive reading.

I've very much enjoyed Peter Jackson's film adaptations. He's accomplished what was previously thought impossible, and nearly proved so by Ralph Bakshi in the late '70s, that is, successfully bringing Professor Tolkien's works to the big screen. While I can't say I'm enthralled with every departure from the books, I do feel that, by-and-large, the films are fantastic. I'm very much hoping that he's also able to bring The Hobbit to the big screen.

OK, I am the first "newbie" for a long long time, I think. ;-)

I've seen this thread very late, but I will give you a short summary of my experiences with Tolkien.
My first experience with Tolkien was approx. 13 years ago with the sweet age of 10. As most of you (I assume) I started to read the other works concerning Middle-earth (a few times). Sadly I knew the English at this age as a not-native englishspeaker not very well, consequently I could read not all works from him. Only these, which were translated into my language (LotR, Hobbit, Sil, Unfinished Tales).
After a short break and some experiences with other Fantasy-novels and their own worlds, I have returned ruefully back to Tolkien with the insight, that these works don't have the depth of Middle-earth (resp. Arda ;-) ).
To my surprise I explored that my english-skills have been risen, so I could read all his works in the orginal.
After a short journey into the grammar of Quenya (and a shorter into Sindarin), I discovered the new world of HoME.
Because of very few time (being a student with children), I only read fragments of HoME. From all a bit, but not a whole book.
Now, I am hoping for good discussions. :-)

Thinlómien
12-17-2004, 07:09 AM
Hi, my name is Thinlómien (that's not, of course, my real name...). I´m a 14-year old (well, nearly 15) girl from Finland.
So if I write something strange, it may be because I'm not a native english-speaker... :)

I've been a LotR -fan since my father read it aloud to me and my little sister, when I was six years old. (I remember getting angry to my father, because he didn't read the chapter "The Voice of Saruman" to the end, but said "we´ll continue it tomorrow". I refused to go to my bed and declared, that I would read it myself, if my father didn´t read it aloud. My parents gave up and my father read it. So LotR was quite impressive to me, even then.)
By now I've read LotR 15 times, because I just love it. I've read all Tolkien's books concerning Arda, what have been translated into finnish (LotR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales).

I've also seen the movies. I have a hate-love -relationship with them. I like them very much, but in the other hand, I think they rape the book. Maybe it's the book behind them, what makes them so good. And I appreciate Peter Jackson; I can believe that the movies could have been much more horrible.
I'm a member of Finnish Tolkien Society and I play M.E.R.P. with my friends. I'm usually the GM and if the movies rape Middle-Earth, there's no word to what I do to it...

I live with my mom, liitle sister and tortoise in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. My hobbies are reading (mostly fantasy books), roleplaying, drawing, art club and playing kantele, the Finnish national instrument. I'm in a international school, in a half-english class.

And to the end I would like to tell that my favorite characters from LotR are Galadriel, Gandalf and Boromir.

Boromir88
12-17-2004, 07:46 AM
And I appreciate Peter Jackson; I can believe that the movies could have been much more horrible.
Yes, all PJ had to do was add in a little scene with Arwen at Helm's Deep, that would have definately made TTT much worse :) .

That's an interesting story you have, welcome to the downs, hope I get to see some of your ideas on the many debated topics here. :)

And may you also enjoy the bitter fights going on between Gil-Galad and Boromir88,dont worry you will get used to both of them .

Welcome to the 'Downs, Apple juice! Enjoy being dead. It's been much fun for the rest of us.

Saphy, I agree with you. There are quite a few Americans who have an excellent command of this intricate tangled web of a lanugage called English.

Welcome, apple juice; I love your avatar!

I think I'll have a great time here (even though I don't understand half of what you're saying)

If you're referring to the English, don't worry, you'll catch on quickly. And if you're referring to Boromir and Gil-Galad.... well, oftentimes we don't really understand them either. ;)

"I think I'll have a great time here (even though I don't understand half of what you're saying)"

Well, as for myself, I don't know half of the posters half as well as I should like;
and I like less than half of them half as well as they deserve. :)

Actually, it's a good idea being here, if only to practice English, since I
believe Bulgaria has applied to enter the EU, and English seems to be
increasingly the common language of the modern business world.

Excuse me? Not all Americans have a poor command of the English language, thank you.
They don't? I mean...oh shucks. I'm just kidding guys. (Once again I would stick a smiley in here except I'm boycotting them.)

I don't know half of the posters half as well as I should like;
and I like less than half of them half as well as they deserve.

Oh, and...Hi Apple Juice. A sincere Good Luck on understanding these combinations of letters we call English.

Well, you just made two perfectly good sentences right there. :)

You're doing just fine, Apple. I know a few people who couldn't put a proper sentence together if they're life depended on it. (And have edited papers for some of them...)

Don't worry too much about it.

You all would never believe the number of "old" members who were on the other day. It was astounding. It felt like the good ol' days, when I was but a freshly buried corpse... And when I saw Mattius... I simply said "!!!" Yes, that's right... "!!!" No words were needed to express myself... :D

And Apple Juice: you're command of English is far better than mine of any second language. With me, I can pick words and phrases out of conversation occasionally (depending on the accent and my mood), but it is easier if I can read it, and even then I have trouble responding clearly.

Welcome and welcome back to everyone.

A big 'How-Do' to ya, Marky! Enjoy the site. Very friendly place, from what I can tell. Having a little trouble finding the swift streams (threads) but it's a great looking site, and I visit several times a day even if I don't find a thread I can 'add' to.

Well, it's a white Christmas here in upState NY, yeah! I won't be back until after Christmas, soooo.....

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! ;)

Oh, how I love it when I construct a big, long, HTML-thumpin' ol' post, then my computer decides to shut down, thus causing me to lose it...joy.

Mattius! It's a Christmas Miracle! He returns #2! Now, what exactly can we do to stop that rebellious RPGer from running away again... Welcome back, Matt - and hey, Merry Christmas to you too!

(even though I don't understand half of what you're saying) No, no, neither do I...I've been here for two years and I still have no idea what they're talking about... No, but seriously, I know what you mean: I'm a member of a French forum, English being my first language. You get used to it. You never get used to Gil-Galad, of course, but in general... Welcome to the Downs, Apple Juice. Nice avatar, by the way.

like them very much, but in the other hand, I think they rape the book. Woah, ok, slightly strong phrasing, sugarsweet. Welcome to the Downs, Thinlómien - hope you enjoy being here :) What's M.E.R.P? Some sort of Role Playing? 'Cos if so, now looks like a just dandy time to start plugging the RPG rooms to all you newcomers - come to the Green Dragon! Even if you've never even heard of RPGing - well, I hadn't!

Ach, why is there always a limit on the amount of smileys?! I run out so quickly! I would join you in boycotting them, Ainaserkawen, but...aww, come on - look at him, in his cute wee hat! :smokin:

P'raps ye've got a different Upstate NY than I do, but it's gotten just above freezing here, and the snow is turning icky and melty, and not particularly nice. At least there's snow! Yay for snowball fights!

Greetings from a new addition to the Downs. I have come to this site many times to read over various discussions, but today I finally decided to sign up so I could join in on all the fun. I'm definitely no Tolkien expert but I have read the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales. Plus, I own the Complete Guide to Middle-Earth and The Atlas of Middle-Earth so maybe I won't be completely useless. Anyway, I justed wanted to say hello and I look forward to being a part of this great forum.

Hello lucyannalulu.

If you haven't, you might want to check out the HoME books.
There are some interesting, longish songs/poems otherwise
not in print, including Beren and Luthien.
