Hi, I was on this board a few years ago as Aldagrim Proudfoot, but now I'm back. I'll admit, I'm probably not as big a Tolkien fan as some of you, but I really admire the man's work and hope to someday do something similar to what he did with Middle Earth. By the way, sorry for posting this on a new thread.

Hi, Up to now I only was on Barrow Downs for read the fanfiction. The are so fantastic, had read: the Mewlips, the quest of the Silmarils and the Hobbits...and I want to read much more. Not only, because the ffs are exiting...I want to improve my english. Learnig by doing...
Now, if I write some cracy thing here, it´s not ever my intention

Heyy everyone!!! Im new to the downs and I just wanted to say hi to everyone. Wilwa just introduced me to this AWESOME site a few weeks ago and Ive just been waiting for the e-mail from the adminastrators so I can come on. Anyway, on a less boring topic, LotR ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!! I watched the first movie first, but after I saw it and found out that there were books, I wanted the books soooooooo badly. I read the first four books and now I just need the others. I guess this is a long enough introduction post, so I'll see you all later!!!!!!!!!!

The pictures are called avatars, TPotSS - everyone has a different one. You can find them from basically anywhere, usually people find them on the internet. If you look in the FAQ, you can find out how to get one beside your own name :) What does your name stand for, by the way, just out of curiosity?

Hello, Middle Earth lovers! I am Mumak o' Harad and I am a Brazilian fan of Tolkien.

As many of you, I have only acknowledged Tolkien's work after the release of the first movie (after all, Brazil is a Portuguese language speaking country and we have a vast literature in our own language which concerns to our particular culture).

Notwithstanding, I was astounded by the inconceivable world and characters created by Master Tolkien and after watching "The Fellowship of the Ring", I decided to get deeper into the story and read the Portuguese translation of the first book, but I was a bit disappointed, because the translation is terrible (they even changed the names of the characters/places, for example: Rivendell is "Valfenda", Strider is "Passolargo" can you believe it?) and, therefore, I decided to buy the original English books and was delighted to read them.

I am reading them for the second time and I have been anonymously visiting the Barrow-downs for some time and loved the high level discussions (especially the Chapter-by-chapter threads).

I hope I can join you (despite my bad english, of course) and learn more from Tolkien and his state-of-art books.

I just wanted to say not to worry too much about your English being substandard. Your above post was as fine as pretty much any native speakers, and better than some.

Sad as it is, quite often those who speak English as foreign language do better in these forums than those for whom it is their native language, due in the main, I suppose, because they take better care to write it properly than those who deal with it every day.

Hi all. Back after a few year absence. I left shortly after the FotR came out in theatres, for reasons that may be guessed at. Now the furor has died down, so I'm back. Sad to see some of my buddies left at around the same time and haven't returned (Heren-Istarion where are you?).
Looking over the various threads I see things are largely back to normal, apart from everything being far more awesome than it was when I left.
I still have no idea how people manage to accumulate so many posts without spamming...

Anyway, I'm back.

Hello, everyone. Not new to Middle-earth at all, but haven't read a lot of the newer publications...my knowledge stops after Unfinished Tales and Silmarillian, both of which I loved.

Would love to read these other books, but unfortunately am in a part of the world where such books are almost impossible to come by and would cost an arm and a leg even if they weren't.

Have enjoyed all the new info learned from the website so far, though.

Hello,

I am Gangamel The Wicked from The Rhun Hills. There are not many orcs left in the World, so I thought it time I branched out and talk to other people.

I used to be breeder of Wargs, and I am most interested in the Warg and Warg Rider Appreciation thread.

I also look forward to looking at other threads and learning things from this site as I am very interested in learning more about my past and that of my kin. I would also like to learn more about all the other peoples of Middle Earth as I have never really tried to before. I was always content in my own ways, that is, until now. Now that everyone I loathed has gone, most likely to their death.

I am no longer as wicked as I was. I tend now only to dabble in petty theft. A melancholy strange to Orcs has come over me since I have been alone here, in the Hills.

Hopefully you will see past me being an Orc and embrace me as a citizen of Middle Earth.

Hi everybody...
I just wanted to say hello because I just got back from a Spring Band Camp...ehem, and to welcome newbies.

Quick update: I am now a commissioned officer of the Empire (formally the Rebellion), my title is Darth Buu, Chief Officer of Independant thought. We even have a theme song "Procession to the Fortress of Doom" written by some Russian turned Canadian named Micha (aka Darth Smirnov). Also, there was much LOTR quoting at our meetings. I think I've assimilated at least 2 potential Downers so watch for them...one even has braces!

Well, um, hello! I'm Parmawen (book-maiden) and I'm really excited to have joined. Just to forewarn you all, if I post this wrong, and it ends up somewhere rather random, please forgive me, I'm completely technologically impaired.

I'm in eigth grade (I feel so young compared to everyone else here!).
I read the Hobbit first, and then LOTR when I was in fifth grade, and completely fell in love. I confess though, I was a Harry Potter fan first. Other than that I love playing the oboe (I'm a self-proclaimed band-geek) and reading/writing. And LOTR, obviously, or else I wouldn't be here! My favorite character is Haldir...he doesn't say much, but in the movie I was so proud when he arrived to help at Helm's Deep. And of course I love Arwen, though I didn't like how they connected her fate to the Ring in the movie, in the book it was more delicate and more about her giving up her immortality.

And, I have to admit, I was totally nervous joining here, because I've been in a lot of really crazy communities/boards where people are just jerks. This one looks a lot kinder though, and I'm really really excited *squeals*

I have actually known about and used this site for about a year now, but just tonight I saw that there was a forum and decided to join!! (I just recently got into the forum vibe, so I am still new at it)

I have been a LoTR fan since the first movie came out. I admit, I tried to read the Hobbit years ago, but failed miserably. Then, the first movie came out and I wanted to know more about the trilogy. Needless to say, I have been hooked ever since and am currently reading the trilogy to my husband.

Hi guys, I'm new to this site, and it looks like it's going to be great! I'm still figuring everything out, but this site is awesome! I've read the trilogy, and own it, as well as The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Book of Lost Tales Volumes 1 and 2, Unfinished Tales, and the Illustrated Encyclopaedia. I have only read, to my great shame, the trilogy and The Hobbit. I'm rereading the trilogy, as I havent read it since a couple years before the movies came out, and then I will proceed to read the rest of the books that I have. I know a little Sindarin. I also have a Nenya replica, and my favorite character is Galadriel. :) I love to sing, and I plan to become a professional opera singer. I also love to read (duh) and write. I live in the southeastern US. I am a member on Councilofelrond.com and Lotrplaza.com.

Aye! I understand how you feel. All my middle years (and I suppose to some extent my high school years seeing as I 've only been in high school for 1 and a half years what do I know? eh?) I took clarenet, piano and voice lessons (music is my passion!) and was sorta kicked around coz of it. And plus the LOTR and Harry Potter fan image didn't help. I guess I rebeled against being a geek and flunked and skivved school... :p (DON'T GET ANY IDEAS!)

Just got back from a school trip! We went on a music feild trip and we performed Mozart's Requiem and some Jazz & Blues! It was amazingly fun! All the money goes for Tsunami relif! Hehehehe I am proud ! The Honours band played LotR the two towers king of the golden horn. it was so beautiful I almost was on the verge of tears!

I have only just discovered this forum, stumbeling across some keywords ....

I have read Tolkiens books time and again and have always been drawing stuff. Lately I have been taking a closer look at "The Hobbit", disecting it into really valuable information about architecture and settings. I noticed that many illustrations I found were far from my imagination and often too weird to fit.

So I hope this place will be a nice area to brainstorm and exchange concepts and thoughts.

My nick "Thorgis" is chosen after a viking tyrant who occupied Dublin. But I am not all that evil. It´s just after having to play a viking on a dutch LARP called Moonblade I chose his name and grew somehow attatched to the chap!

Hi all. My name's matt. I'm new. Um I wanted to ask because I didn't see a place for this but I'm having problems with my avatar and my signature. It seems that it'll only let me have a limited 250 words for my signature and I only had about 65 :confused: so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for anyone who'll reply to this. Oh if anyone does can you do it by pm or e-mail? Thanks.

If I remember rightly, it's 250 characters, not words, and that most likely includes spaces, so 65 words could top that limit easily. The extra characters needed for links are included in that count. I suggest you try a short signature for a starter to find out how it works.

A reminder to all newcomers (and 'older' members, if necessary) - we ask you to limit your signature to three lines or less. It should not normally be the longest part of your post! :)
