Geez, is this thread getting long!
It'll never be as long as CRAZY CAPTIONS! Which is my home. :smokin:
Hi! I read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series about 10-12 years ago, and the Hobbit again last year. These are the best stories I've ever read, and I know I'll keep coming back to them as years go by.
I've never role-played before, but I love writing, so I think this will be fun.

Hey there, Hi there, Ho there.
Call me Boo.
I'm from Akron, Ohio (if you can believe that).
Been a fan of Tolkien for about... 35-36 years, so you know I'm WAY old.
Looks like a nice place to enter discussions of Middle Earth and such.
The thing that really blew me away about the Silmarillion is that in it, the universe is created through music.
What a concept!
If I'm not here, I can usually be found over at the Battlefront.com forums.

Welcome! Yes, wasn't that AMAZING??? I love music, so... yeah.
Speaking of which...
I remember back about a bazillion years ago when I was a beardless youth and a callow boy in college... both of us listened to an album (remember those?) entitled "Songs of Middle Earth", I believe, by some composer named Donald Swann.
My Google-Fu, isn't the greatest and I can't find anything on it, except that it did exist as an LP.
Ever heard of it?
It consisted of a single piano and baritone vocalist and it was really pretty cool.
Here's what it had on it:
1. The Road Goes Ever On
2. Upon the Hearth the Fire is Red
3. In the Willow Meads of Tasarinan
4. In Western Lands
5. Namárië
6. I Sit Beside the Fire
7. Errantry
I'd really like to find a copy.
p.s. This black background is really doing a number on my aged eyes.
Just thought I'd mention...
OH! And I just remembered... it also has Tolkien reciting his poetry on the flip side!!!
Estelyn Telcontar
03-18-2007, 08:00 AM
Hi there, Boo, and welcome to the Downs! The book and recording you remember is called 'The Road Goes Ever On'; Swann composed the melodies to Tolkien's poetry, and in one case, Tolkien himself sang him the melody as he imagined it, and Swann wrote it down. I own the book with the notes and have enjoyed playing them; except for "Errantry", which has a more difficult piano accompaniment, they're not hard to play for an average pianist. I also have the recording; the singer is William Elvin (what an appropriate name, eh?!).
Tolkien and his wife Edith (who was herself an accomplished pianist) heard and enjoyed at least one performance of these songs - at their golden wedding anniversary, if I remember correctly.
More information can be found here:
Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_Goes_Ever_On)
Donald Swann's website (http://www.donaldswann.co.uk/songcycles.html)
Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Road-Goes-Ever-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0007136552)
By the way, it's always nice to have new members who are old-timers to Tolkien! If you want to get to know the Downs' geezers, do look into The Tolkien Coming of Age Club (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=4665), where we share our experiences - or just companionable silence, whichever we enjoy most at the moment.

03-18-2007, 12:49 PM
I got the Road goes ever on finally a couple of years ago when it was finally reissued. Fortunately since I am not even an average pianist it comes with a CD of the music played by the composer. I would like to hear the choral arrangement of Bilbo's last song sometime...

Hey, folks. I'm pretty new and have only made a handful of posts thus far, so I thought I'd chime in.
I love The Lord of the Rings (obviously), but I'm quite possibly a bigger fan of the The Silmarillion, where I first glimpsed into the sheer scope of Tolkien's creation. The mythological backdrop and the gradeur of the ancient lore really grabs me.
The few members I've spoken to have been very knowledgeable and helpful, and on the whole I am impressed with this gathering of fans and intellects. :)

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking for a bit, ventured a couple posts, well 4 actually I think and now I'm introducing myself.
I first read Lord of the Rings when I was 14 and I remember thinking "This is an amazing story". So I was thrilled to find out that there were more books/info on Middle Earth and I've been enjoying Barrow Downs very much especially the Chapter by Chapter Threads.

Greetings and Salutations... I'm new.
I have.. liked, loved, enjoyed the Lord of the Rings since I first read it. I must say this shamefacedly, I haven't been able to get through many of the other Tolkien books, except the Silm. once, and the Hobbit several times. I do have 7 of his books on my list to read, but that doesn't mean I'll get through all of them.
That's all I have to say for now. So farewell.

Well, thanks! I love Ted Nasmith's "Maglor Casts a Silmaril into The Sea"...makes for a great cover for the Sil too. But I do appreciate Turin as well, and I can see how you'd get that initial impression (I know...the black). :)
Requiem
03-25-2007, 12:04 AM
Good evening. I am a long-time fan of the series, but this is my first time in the forums. I stumbled upon it by chance, actually.
I have read The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Tolkien Reader, Farmer Giles of Ham, and Smith of Wootton Major. I am still trying to work my way through The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. I've been stuck in The History ofGaladriel and Celeborn for months now...
As you proably have guessed, I am more of a fan of the books then of the movies. I was quite upset when I saw that The Voice of Saruman was taken out of the films, and when it was in the Extended DVD, I was happy, but then downcast when they killed off Saruman so soon. I really enjoyed his last ditch efforts in that chapter in the book...
And now I go to bed, seeing as how it is *very* late. Good night!

03-30-2007, 01:12 PM
Hey, fellow travelers! I'm MaskedNicci - most call me MN. And I may be younger than a lot of you, but I assure you, I am at least decent in company. I'm not new to forums, and I read my dad's old and worn out 'Lord of the Rings' set about...hm...I think it was four and a half years ago. I read the series twice or so, and I loved Shelob's lair the best. After that, I discovered the Hobbit, and it has been my favorite of Tolkien's work since, which is possibly removing me from the cliché "Favorite book? Well, it's LOTR". My favorite is the Hobbit, which makes a world of a difference, right? ;) I've tried reading Silmarillion, but I wasn't able to make it far. I want to be able to comprehend and enjoy it for what it is, instead of rushing through it for the simple fact of being able to say I've read it.
I'm also into musicals, have a fetish for vampires, werewolves, and mythical creatures. I love to read the older literature, because I find the air of the language so poetic - which has resulted in my writing style being very formal and detailed. Which brings me to the next 'me' part of this post.
I long to be a writer of fantasy/mystery novels, and this has always been my dream. I've written mere fanfiction thus far, and it is usually ignored and avoided because of the excessive length of my chapters! I love creating these new worlds with beauteous characters for others to envy and enjoy. It's just always been that way for me, as natural as breath itself. :D
Finally, I'm glad to be on this site, as the colors rock, the place looks lively enough, and it's well-run from what I've seen. And who doesn't want to find a well-run place to talk about their obsessions?
Welcome to the Downs MaskedNicci!
Sauron the White
03-30-2007, 02:30 PM
Hi to all. Just joined this week and am enjoying the atmosphere greatly. I discovered JRRT right out of college in 1971 when I wanted to read anything but the dry text material I had isolated myself with for the last four years. LOTR is my favorite book. Love the films also - hope that does not anger anyone. I see books and films as two very different things and a film as a slightly different way of telling the same story in a different voice. Saw the musical in Toronto and thought it was pretty bad. Looking forward to HURIN and look forward to the discussion here.

Hello to everyone!! I kind of stumbled upon this place from another forum. I so far recognize one person... Mr. Xyzzy.. I saw your post about this place @ PPT (I am Princess Miyu there.)
So yes, I am Isabellkya; I was introduced to Tolkien through my Calculus teacher, because he was a fanatic and always had Tolkien related bonus questions on all of his exams. Haha. So I read the books, mainly to answer the bonus questions; and have been hooked ever since then.

To answer you Boo; they were obviously not math related in any fashion. They tended to be pretty obscure questions; which weren't easily answerable. The one that sticks out in my mind the most; had to do with Gimli's father (Gloin I believe) and a war that he was in. It has been a few years since I have read any of the books, and so the information is not at the front of my consciousness.

And Gil-Galad... my reputation? Well, I always try to be affable and whenever possible, to smell nice. As my Great Aunt Ruth used to say, "You can be forgiven much as long as you don't smell bad".

I was registered at is Forum once earlier.... I was sort of wandering arround on my pc and I thought by myself : "Hey... Why the hell arn't you active on the Barrowdowns anymore?!". So bang! I registered again! :p.
Well I was planning to just be active on my old account, but then, I realized I didn't remember my username. And the first thing I did when I registered was seeing the "What Creature is Tom Bombadil?" thread (to which I have an awnser now by the way) which I starded myself :D , well, I didn't like my Old Username anyway.
Oh, and In the mean-time I'm still 14 and Dutch and everything, I do have gotten an obsession for Norse culture and languages... That's why my username is in Old Icelandic, it's ought to be translated as: "(a) Light Elf". (Snorri Sturluson called what Tolkien just named Elves "Light-Elves (Ljösálfar and he named Dwarves dark-elves" (Dökkálfar) or "Black-Elves" (Svartálfar).
Neithan Tol Turambar
04-07-2007, 10:36 PM
I will call myself Neithan Tol Turambar. I am very happy to be here at this site. I am fairly new to computers and internet technology and am learning quickly.
I am here, of course, because I love Tolkiens mythology. I have read Tolkiens works on Middle-Earth many times. I have recently read a biography of the man himself and found that with the biography, as well as the novels, I was more curious and had more questions after reading it than I had before. But I suppose that like most of you the cares and concerns of life have not afforded me half the time I should like to spend in Tolkeins world.
In my approach to my participation here I want to say that every opinion or insight or question I contribute will be biased heavily by these fundamental opinions regarding Tolkeins work:
1). I love Tolkeins work passionately and profoundly. I believe that it is divine revelation.
2). I reject any reference to Christian allegory within Tolkeins work.
and thirdly,
3). I abhor any commercialization of his work.
I know that sounds pretty austere, but I can't help it. I really care about Tolkeins work and would not see it cheapened, or changed, not one word, or exploited in any way by those who love it less than I. Because if they loved it as much as I then they would know that it's greatness is far beyond everything I have within myself in total, and only the vilest and most atrocious arrogance could convince a man that he could by adjustments, great or small, improve upon the work of Tolkein.
My feelings concerning the movies and other commercializations of Tolkeins work could be compared to an eleventh century popes feelings about Catharism.
Having said that, I wonder if I really need make any other contribution here?
Let me think about it. Thank you for the site. It's really cool.

Heya, my name is Ataralasse. I've been lurking here for a while ... it looked interesting and I'm always on the lookout for Lord of the Rings fans. I think I've found a couple. ;)
Hm, a little about myself ...
Well, if you couldn't tell from my nick, I'm a girl. I've only read The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and bits and pieces of The Silmarillion and The Book of Lost Tales Prt 1. I like the movies done by Peter Jackson, and though I haven't seen the cartoon ones, I want to see them just to see if they're as bad as I've heard.
Okay, that's all I can think to add.
Cheers.

Welcome to The Downs Alcarcalimo, the place for getting your questions answerd would be the Novice and Newcomers forum or The Books Discution forum all dependin on which kind of questions you have.
If you also enjoy being silly then you have come to the right place, check out Mirth and you will find that we are a very silly bunch of whights.
There is also the Quiz section if you like trivia and riddles. . .
Anyways welcome amongst us dead, I hope your barrow is cold enough.

Well, I'm back. That is to say, I have been registered here before (around three years ago), but apparently my account got lost. I've been on and off BD since eh. 2002? 2001? Something like that. I'm -always- on the chat, but practically -never- on the forum. Actively posting at least, I do read it.
So, lo and behold, here I am. I'm known all over the interwebs as Yiriandur, a nowadays 20 year old girl from the Netherlands, although at the moment temporarily studying in Aarhus, Denmark. You can call me Yiri if you wish.
I'll try to be somewhat active here, for a change. For the first time in my life i saved the url to the forum in my favourites, to visit it more regularly. Wish me luck!

Hello Everybody,
I'm new to the forums here. I've been a Tolkien fan since 1994, when some friends and I got together to make a multiple-user online game set in Middle Earth. I began researching the works so we could make a more authentic recreation, down to the geography, and I fell in love with Middle-Earth.
I just discovered the Barrow Downs and have had a lot of fun here, figured I'd also join the forums.

Welcome lordaule! I must say what you presented about yourself quite reminds me of my story when coming here. My original coming here was mainly due to the fact I wanted to verify or research more information in order to make a Middle-Earth roleplaying setting I did more authentic. And look - I have discovered far more in this place. I hope you'll do too!

Fantastic! Finaly another downer from Denmark, well sort of.
I know that Yiriandur is really from the Netherlands, but I must take what I can get. . .
I my self was considering studying in Ĺrhus, but decided it was too long a distance from home and besides I am not really fond of the city. The last time I was there, the whole place was stinking. . .I belive it was because of the Ceres Breweries.
anyways welcome Yiriandur, I hope you will enjoy it here. . .
I tried to hang out in the chat but never got the hang of it, hopefully you will have greater succes here.

I am not new, however I am so old that you could repackage me as "good as new". I'm a playful ghoul come back to haunt you.
Aye, it's been years since I've explored these haunts. Little things like life got in the way. My own forum occupies most of my Tolkien talking time, but there is something in the air this summer that awakened old feelings. Not that the air smells good here...it's stale and full of the memories of the rotting stench of the Kings of Arnor of old. But that's how ghouls love it, though ghouls can't smell. And the light is bad, till your eyes adjust... it's so very green and ghostly......
I'm actually curious to see if anyone remembers me; not in an ego way, but just curious, like Smeagol. I remember a few names myself.... Telchar, H-I, and of course the Barrow-Wight himself...

Hello everyone!
Based on the discussions I have seen go on so far I would have to say that this is the single most intelligent message board centered on the works of Tolkein that I have yet to see.
I hope to become a regular of these forums. Though I am no good at RPing I do love a good discussion. It has been a while since I have discussed whether or not Balrogs had wings, or the mysterious blue wizards, etc.
My best wishes,

Hello all,
It's been a while since I've posted on a message board, but I bumped into this board one day and thought it looked pretty interesting. Tolkien's been my favorite author since I first read him in grade school, and he even got me interested in linguistics. I haven't read all of his works (yet), though I hope I can add to the discussions.
And did someone write about RPing? Awesome!
Take care all,
Noah

This forum is marvelous! I have been to many forums but, although forums are usually fun, a lot of them are just for Tolkien amateurs (Arwen-Undomiel.com)... and most people in them are a bit ignorant about his works... and are difficult to converse with about them, because they refuse to read the books... and they refuse to discuss properly. But I see that most people here either have read most of the books before, or they try to understand more about them. *nods at the above post*
So anyway, I hope I will meet a few of you and I hope that I will enjoy this place (I love to RP, btw)!

Welcome to The Barrow Downs, jeffcare.
Dwarfo Elf relations have been on a knife edge for a long time. I think what finally broke them off from one another was an incident in The Silmarillion (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silmarillion-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0261102737/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-3186185-3899013?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180096690&sr=8-1), a sort of ancient History of Middle Earth, involving an argument over some very precious jewels. You will receive a more detailed answer from our learned folks over in the book forum if you search for a thread about it. :)

Hi, I'm the newest thing, but not the youngest. :p
I loves me some Tolkien, but apparently don't hold him as the unassailable Valar most of you seem to. Maybe I get that from his overly self-critical attitude that comes across in the HoMe. If he didn't think he was the Greatest Writer in the World, I certainly can't.
That said, what's with all the millions of pages of LotR slashfic online? OMGWTF (as the kiddies say)? Somebody throw some Silmarillions at those kids and quiet them down. Sheesh!
Also, pretty neat that I see an attempt to rebuild the Silmarillion itself. It's about time, and I'm not sure that we can count upon Adam Tolkien or other family members to take up the flag so recently laid down by CT. What I'd like to see, however, is someone with the courage and ingenuity to write new Quenta outside of the First-through-Third Ages. I'm bored with amateur rehashes of stories JRRT himself rewrote ad nauseum. Let's see the Silmarils found and the Last Battle fought (and see the True West finally sundered from this world forever)!

I was brought here by a strange dream.
But now that I find myself in this place, it seems far more welcoming than I had supposed.
Firstly, let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Hockley and I am an author of sorts. I have just published my debut novel and my only hope for it is that someone (just a handful would do!!) will be generous enough to take the time to read it. I also hope that I will make some new friends here, as I have a genuine passion for Tolkien and the fantasy genre and would love to get to know others who feel the same way.

Hi, MarkJohn, and welcome to the Downs! We hope you will enjoy yourself here.
I'm closing this thread and will move your post to the "Introduce Yourself Here" thread (top of the Novices and Newcomers forum), where members can read your introduction and welcome you. Individual greeting threads are routinely closed and deleted or merged, so that the forum doesn't get cluttered with them.
If you have any questions that aren't answered in the Forum FAQ (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=6010) and Forum Policies (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=5993) threads, feel free to write me or any of the other moderators a PM and we will do our best to help. *The Dark Elf bows*
I am perhaps new to this forum, but not to Middle-earth on the web, having been about the internet in the guise of Morthoron since the 1990's. The question remains as to why I haven't stopped by sooner, but let's just say I stumbled on the Barrow Downs site while enroute to looking up something completely different; late, but fortuitous nonetheless.
I am a writer of note in some circles (and infamous in others *shrugs*). Oddly enough, I first read about Tolkien while in grade school (actually, it was his obituary in the Detroit Free Press in 1973). The paper clipping (which I still have) led me to reading the Hobbit, and now I keep the Tolkien estate subsidized through annual purchases of their product (which has grown quite voluminous).
Thank you for the opportunity to post here.

It's not REALLY my name. After I hatched in western Iceland (over seven millenia ago) the local elves brought naming gifts - which included a basket of pastries (crowberry and bearberry tarts, call them pies). My wobbly legs made me fall face first into the basket. I came out licking the sticky mixture. The elves were laughing with good humor at the pie-eyed dragon. The rest, as they say, is mythology.

Hello,
I am Master Morgoth. I have been a fan of all things Middle Earth for quite some time. I tend to take more of an interest in the darker creatures the Professor has given us, but I do not ignore the more "noble" at their expense. I will admit that I would have no reservations if Morgoth would have unseated the rest of the Valar and usurped power from the gelding Manwe, but we will save that conversation for another time.

Hello,
I am an MA student doing a thesis on Tolkien's LotR. I am working in the Gender Studies discipline, and examining the concept of homosocial desire, with the possibility of covering the idea of performative gender as seen in the books (if space permits).
Now before anyone gets all mad and starts sending me "But JRRT would never" emails or posts -- I know all about that and as much as I respect another's rights to their beliefs, I will ask that you respect mine and my work.
I would love to engage in discussion about the kinds of relationships between men in the books and welcome anyone to discuss this with me -- I will even listen to those who disagree as long as I don't get a theology lecture or have to listen to anti-gay propaganda.
Respectfully,

entwife89 - there was this one thread http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=13433 on why people think that the movies are homoerotic. Even though the topic sounds maybe too movie-ish for you, I recommend having a look at the thread since it swayed quite a lot from the original topic, closer to your thesis topic. Anyway, I'm very intrigued to hear your thoughts on the topic, feel free to start a new thread about it or to contribute to some older one. :)

I've already made a couple of posts in the Book section, so I thought I'd better introduce myself. I'm from Australia, Victoria to be exact, and a great Tolkien fan. I was introduced to Tolkien by my father, I was captivated and have never lost interest since.:smokin:

Well, I'd better introduce myself as well then eh?...
Its a little funny that I join this forum right now, it's been a while since I red any Tolkien related stuff to be honest. Well, I'm reading some books about Religeon & Science right now (about Evolution, Intelligent Design and the likes) after that I plan on reading 'The Lays of Beleriand' (Is it any good people?;))
Well... er... what else is there to say about me... I play piano..... I'm currently on highschool, after this I'm planning on studying something linguistic..... err.... I occaisionally watch anime.... well.... that's about as intresting as my life gets

The throws of reality tore me most unrelentlessly and, curiously, most unceremoniously away from most of my online commitments. I've been alive for so long that I no longer remember my brief death here at the Barrow-Downs. I used to be known as Strider, but I've since forgotten my password and my e-mail address has since been deactivated. I hope you can welcome me again as Crownless King. The name I throw about these parts is Adrien (or Adrienne, if you happen to be Orominuialwen), and I would encourage you to employ it. As I have more time on my hands in the coming year, I have no doubt that we're in for a long, lasting, moderately painless relationship.
Best,

Hey all, newbie here. I was looking up Zimmerman and his script (which was inspired by watching Sleeping Beauty and remembering how much Tolkien despised Disney... love random thoughts like that) and stumbled upon this forum. Thought... hey, why not. Spread myself a bit more around the internet.
My username is very much mine. Yes, I'm not much for anonmity. If you see it anywhere else, it's 99% most likely me. Sometimes shortened to "Laire", but I'm pretty easy to identify with rambling thoughts and other such nonsense.
Anyways! I was introduced to Tolkien by the FOTR trailer back in fall of 01. I read FOTR right before the movie came out, and soon finished the series in 02. By PJ's ROTK I was a helpless addict. At this moment of my life all my friends and family have given up all hope for me and have accepted that I am, indeed, a Tolkien geek through and through. Have a good few books, a room that resembles a shrine, go to cons, argue about Balrogs and wings, play any games I can get my hands on, the whole nine yards.
Outside of Tolkien (which really doesn't exist), I'm a student (bleh), artist (dA linky in profile), writer (though not all that good), insomniac (3:30am!), and chocoholic (yum). :)
See ya all around. :D

Mithol
12-16-2007, 01:52 AM
Hello. :) I'm Mithol and I found a link to this forum from an Eragon forum. It's been a long while since I've been "into" Tolkien and so I decided to join a forum which looked considerably active. I am even thinking of rereading the books again soon. I am more into movies than books, so I've seen the films more recently than I've read the books. I have to say that for five years after seeing them I thought they were the best movies ever made. And forever and ever they will remain smoewhere near the top of my list of favourites.
I was introduced to LOTR when I was nine or ten years old by the cartoon movie from the seventies and loved it so much, despite being of questionable quality. That was shortly before we heard that the PJ movies were being made. I would have gone straight to the cinema except that my mother made me read the books first and I'm glad she did because, even at ten, I appreciated them as a masterpiece. 2004 was my biggest year for Tolkien. I was a huge nut that year. I was a member of the then very active forums that can now be found at www.lotrfanmb.com and used to have a link from www.lordoftherings.net. My username was Eowynmaiar. If anyone here knows me then hello to you. :)
Anyway, that was my life story. Sorry for all the waffling.

Um... i'm 17... have read the books 12 times total (probably only 8 or 9 times including introduction and appendices)... seen each film 6 or 7 times. Read the hobbit about 20 times. Tried the silmarillion but didn't really get on with it.

Probably check out the Book and movie forums for the most part. (Although one can never tell where they will end up spending time, so I may end up joing the rpgs and doing other stuff.) As for my moniker, it simply comes from me being fascinated by the Nazgűl when I first read the books as the young age of twelve. This fascination with them and their leader has not dimmed over time, so it was the first thing that came to my mind when thinking of a name for this message board.

I'm with Finduilas on this ... I found the Silmarillion hard when I first read it - Foster's complete guide to Middle Earth which can be got cheaply on Amazon was a great help, keeping me straight with all the many similar names. Also dont' be put off looking at Unfinished tales just because you haven't got on with the Silmarillion - there is a lot of LOTR / Hobbit related stuff you would probably enjoy.
And welcome. :D
