I want to thank Amanduial and Ainaserkewen for nice words about my English, and I can asure you that it's only average. Most of serbian Tolkien geeks read fantasy books in english, since most of them are not translated yet. For example, History of Middle Earth, Lost Tales, Wheel of Time 2-10, Discworld 15-25 etc. SF books are in much better position. Not to mention that original is original, regardless how good the translation is.

OK, another newbie then... I´ve read the books since I were 10, always loved fantasy. I used to think I knew pretty much about Middle-Earth, but after a time browsing through this forum, I´ve realised that I´m only a beginner.
Somebody mentioned Douglas Adams, and The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy is one of the funniest books I´ve ever read...actually the only one I´ve laughed out loud while reading. If you want some great fantasy, I recommend David Eddings, a personal favourit of mine...after tolkien of course...
Don´t know what else to say. I´m here to watch and learn. By the way, if something is misspelled, it´s because I´m swedish..

Welcome to the Downs! Ooh, another scandinavian! There aren't too many of us here. You'll probably learn a lot here. I've only been here for a few months, And I know a lot more now. Happy posting!

Hey, another Swede. Welcome to the Downs. :) If you have Helgon, I have a few nice quotes from HGTTG there. My name there is NightKnight. Once again, welcome to the Downs!

Welcome all, and may your deaths be prolonged and interesting. Although it's already been commented on, I too would like to register amazement at your English skills, Vanya. You seem to have a better grasp on the language than some of my friends... and they've all been speaking English since birth.
I am a poor college student with too much free time Ah, Dani... I don't think I've ever met a college student with much cash, but free time can be easily burned by putting your two cents in on various threads. Welcome.
Araswoon... Welcome also, and do you know the screen name of the person who directed you here?

Thanks again, but as I already wrote, comparing wih some peple I meet every day at "The prouncing pony"(our serbian site), it's" nothing spetial. Somethimes they disscus in english, and it is not rare that they throw some elwish too.
Sweeds, mmmmmmm, I love them. Beautifull country, and handsome men. They are model for Rohirim, in my oppinion. Also, they could have been casted as Elves, the blond ones, with much bigger succes than PJ-s, which I can not immagine with sword, not to mention in the great battles of the old days (at lest, they would have had the same color of eyebrows and hair - blond)
Gothmog
04-18-2004, 06:28 AM
hey Vanya, glad you like my country :)
About those rohirrims... They WERE made to look like swedes, or at least scandinavian people. Peter Jackson wanted something viking-like (or is it wiking with w?). The vikings were quite poor horsemen as far as I know, but who cares...
Vanya
04-18-2004, 08:28 AM
In my oppinion, PJ didn't do Rohirim very well. Costums are great, but Edoras looks very poor and village-like. Also, his rohirim are very much different than in the book, where they were discribed as very tall, with long limbs and musculs, wit blond long hair... In the film, they were rough, even wild, short or chubby (remember Hamma), and hair is more red than blond (and they obviusly didn't brush it very often). Eomer was OK, as character, but I always immagined him more elegant. I hope I explained myself good enough.
Gothmog
04-18-2004, 09:35 AM
I agree with you Vanya...Especially about Edoras, it looks like a small farmer village...
If PJ wanted the people of Rohan to look like vikings, they should be a little rough and wild and I can´t picture a viking using a hairbrush. Maybe the Rohirrim looks TOO much like vikings...

04-19-2004, 03:21 AM
Yes, Gothmog, they look too much like Vikings. Not that I have anything against them, on the contrary, but they were quite wild. Did you read " The long, dark tea time of the soul" by Douglas Adams? I recomend it to you and the others. It is about Scandinavian gods and Valhalla, in his very spetial point of view. I think it was the last book he wrote.
As for Rohirim and their haircuts,, they should have pleits, as far as I know, and therefore to brush their hair thoroughly.

Hello, i am new.
Nobody probably cares but, ill go ahead and introduce myself anyway.
You beings may call me Ethiumer for now. I am a loving fan of Tolkienism for many countless reasons. I am currently a student strudying Business, Politics and Computing and I am merely 19 years of age.
Unfortunately, i live on a rainy piece of land surrounded by water called England. It is very dull here and one day I will travel elsewhere before I die.
I have tried to join other Tolkien based forums, but they mostly seem to contain god-loving worshippers which i can't bear to communicate with.
Other than that, i want to say that I will like to stay on this forum as long as it stays fun and useful, and feel free to pop into my turf @ forums.clankiller.com

Thanks for the book-tips Vanya. I´ll look for that title...Actually there is a scandinavian god in The Hitchhikers Guide... You remember Thor at the endless party??
And Ethatius (oh, 19 like me!), I´m new here too, but it seems like a good place. Welcome!!

Actually, Etharius, most people here do care, and I think the weather is geting to you. Anybody would!! But seriously, I hope that you find that there is a vast variety of topics in the forumns, and I hope you find a place in our community!
Hello to all the other newbies too!!

To Gothmog: Guide is one of my favorite books, I laugh loud when I red it!
And as a new member ( for whom the most importan rule is to read more and write less) I can say that this place has nice atmosphere, but there is a huge problem: it is very hard to post, since people alredy wrote everything or almost everything there is to say about Tolkien. The newcomers can mostly read previous threads if they don't want to repeat someone else's posts. Maybe it's time to form few new sections, like other literature, history, philosophy, art, mythology, etc. I think that members have to say a lot on other topics too. Of course, focus should be on Tolkien and fantasy.

Hallo.. newcomers o-0
Bloody Glamdring
04-22-2004, 11:22 AM
Hello all...
I've returned following a lengthy absence. My reasoning for leaving was very close to what was posted above, namely that it seems everything's been covered here. But, I'm back on a mythology kick (inspired by Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL saga, of all things), so I thought I'd return to my roots a bit.
Oh, and I went by Greyhame my first time around, in case anyone remembers...
Anyway, I've finished school since then, have gotten married, and I'm preparing for a year in the employ of the Central Illinois Red Cross in the disaster response department.
I'm currently reading the Letters, and so am very intrigued by Fordim's historia thread in Books.
Tolkien's philology interests me, but since I am a poor student of language, it's the mythology he built around his languages that fascinates me most.
Well, there's one post at least. :smokin:

Welcome all newcomers!!
Yes, I think I do remember you as Greyhame, Bloody Glamdring. Congratulations on your marriage. I hope your spouse enjoys LOTR too...
Terry Pratchett is, IMHO, even funnier than Douglas Adams, and I consider the Hitchhiker's guide to be hilarious. Anyone who likes Adams will probably like Pratchett and vice versa.
Cheers,

04-23-2004, 05:53 AM
Greetings,
I registered here last year but only posted once before today so I thought I may as well introduce myself; better late than never I suppose.
I first read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings c. 1991 and have been a member of various Tolkien forums since 1999. I am a student of Philosophy and English at the university in Wellington, New Zealand. Old English and Medieval Literature are my specialty but I also plan to branch out into Middle English and do a bit more Chaucer.
I missed out on being an extra in LOTR -- I know a few people who were and they had a blast -- but I think I might just try out for King Kong later this year :D.
That's all for now,
Calypso.
By the way, anyone familiar with Homer should know the gender of my name but to avoid any confusion -- of which there has been some elsewhere -- I'd like to state that I am, in fact, a woman.

I just joined as well. I'm a pretty huge lotr fan and I've looked at this site for a while but I just joined the forum. I go under the name Orophin and for those of you who do not know who he is he is haldir's brother and the only time you see him in the books is in the trees of Lothlorien when the fellowship first enter the forest. I belive that he says only one word, in the book but that does not mean that he is not awsome. I am a senior in high school and I too am going to college next year.

I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Marared and I've been reading Tolkien every year since 1987. I was a fan after the first time I read LOTR, now I'm a bigger fan since the movies were released. Recently, I've discovered there are not many people in my day to day life that share my passion for middle earth. I'm glad I found you guys.

Hello! It's nice to see some more fresh faces after having been absent so long. I hope all of you have a wonderful experience here at the Barrow Downs! Get yourself acquainted with some of the veteran members here; it's the best thing to do if you want to "get into the groove" of the forum. Check out some of the other boards here as well; the roleplaying is great, the people are great, and I hope you have a good time getting to know us here at the Downs!

Hullo hullo. I was once an acountless lurker, but I've recently decided to step into the light. I, as any and every other newcomer, look forward to wasting my time on the forums. :D I've read more of Tolkien's books than I care to name off, and I hope to meet people who don't just smile, nod and back away when I refer to Middle-Earth!

05-02-2004, 12:31 PM
Hello everyone,
I've visited this site a few times, and I thought, why not make an acount?
So here I am then...
I come from Holland, the north of Holland actually, and I hope that there are not too many faults in my writing (I am not that good in English!)
I am 18 years old now, and I first began to read The Hobbit when I was about 11. I didn't really liked it then, but I read it again when I was 14, and finished also the whole LotR. Now I am busy reading the Silmarillion, but that is not going very fast, because I read it really carefully (I don't want to miss anything!) and I also have my exams in a few weeks.
I hope I will find my way here, and please forgive me if I am doing anything stupid!
I have only one question, who do I need to ask if I have any problems? (like avatars or logg in problems)

05-07-2004, 11:50 AM
Hello and welcome to the Barrow Downs, Idril Groenblad.
The barrow downs being the burial mounds of the ancients in LOTR, well, we just naturally assumed we are all ... dead ... and under the dreadful spell of the Barrow Wight. There be treasures buried here, too, at the edge of the perilous Old Forest.
The treasures include not only discussion threads, games, and fanfiction, but role playing also. If you are interested, hike over to the forum The Shire and visit the Green Dragon Inn for some creative spelunking in Middle-earth.

What do you mean with 'enjoy being dead'?
Erm, since we're all on the Barrow Downs, we tend to think of ourselves as lesser wights who are slaves to the great Barrow Wight. The fact is, all wights are the ghosts of deceased persuns... however, it's nothing to complain about. My post-mortem is much more fun than my life was, I assure you, and I'm quite sure yours will be too, as long as you adhere to the policies of the forum. Have a nice afterlife!

Ithaeliel, it's good to see you back around the Downs again! :)
and under the dreadful spell of the Barrow Wight Ah, Bethberry...Idril, she makes it out to be such a bad thing, most misleading! Welcome to the Barrowdowns and, now you understand what we mean, enjoy being dead.
Erebrandir - Back off when you mention it? Hmm, well, certainly it won't be us doing the backing off..Welcome to Downs. May we lead you in dark places.
Marared - woah, since '87! You almost qualify for the 'Coming of Age' thread - those who have read Tolkien for 18 years or more. Ach, maybe you can sneak in a little early... Hope you enjoy it here.
Hmm, now why can't I post smileys...

Right then... *pulls fold-out chair closer to circle*
My name is Quicksilver_Sprite, and I first read Tolkien at the piddling age of six or seven, though my mother had previously read it to all of the children several times. On my ninth birthday, I recieved a paperback copy of LotR, but did not get further than the third page of the first chapter for quite a few years. As I grew older, my reading habits became more voracious, and at the mention of the much-hyped FotR movie, I decided that the time had come to once again pick up LotR. So, slowly and carefully, I made my way through it, digesting it and remembering the magic of Middle-Earth from my younger years.
Currently, I'm trying to write a piece of orginal fiction, fit in Algebra II and World History, and retain the shattered pieces of sanity still in my grasp. (siblings will do that to you)

Lothiriel94
05-11-2004, 08:02 PM
Hello my name is Lothiriel (I wish I was really her!) I have a big crush on Eomer. I love to read fanfiction and write and of course draw! I began reading The Lord of The Rings about 3 years ago when my boyfriend Shawn (who by the way has a striking resemblance to Celeborn....wierd) suggested them to me. Well I read it and loved it and later read the Hobbit, Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales. Something really strange you might know is that I always read the end first, the think it makes the books better ;) go figure... Anyway, I am also a big fan of the movies, they did an amazing job with it.
Okay, so really I only wish I was the queen of Rohan and spent my childhood on the beautiful beaches of Dol Amroth.... really my name is Andrea (I go by Andi) I am fairly tall and skinny with long brown hair and green eyes. I am 16 and live in Kentucky. I used to be in competitive gymnastics and have danced all my life. I used to want to be a dancer but recently changed my mind because I became borderline anorexic a few years ago and I don't think its a very good field for me ( yeah life sucks and nothings ever perfect) anyway.. now I want to be a writer and illustrator.
I absolutely love anything Tolkien or Lord of the Rings....don't know what I'd do without it....
well if you read that, wow! hehe I tend to get real wordy.... hope to talk to you around the boards... I am a little shy though.....well byebye! :)

Suilad! I am Bethelarien Lothmiriel, the Jewel-flower. I am quite excited to be here, and hope to both have fun and contribute here at this site.
A few little tidbits about myself...I am a writer. I love to write, whatever it is, it doesn't matter, but mostly fantasy. I do poetry on occasion, but it takes something...rather emotional to get me to do so.
I sing. I enjoy singing very much, and I've been told I'm good at it. Whatever. :D
I also act. I have acted in several roles, from Juliet to a French *ahem* dancer named Fifi. Okay, not quite a dancer, but....;) Anywho, I enjoy it very much!
A quick question, one which has likely been asked and answered many times before--how does one go about obtaining an avatar? I would very much like one. :D
Thanks so much!

I will be gone from home for a little over a month and I really don't know how much time I'll have on the internet, so a big hello to all future members!
P.S.- I know a lot of members try to visit this thread every now and then, so would everyone tak a gander at the Books forum, even if you are normally an anti-book forum person? Hi, all! I'm Audreidi...well, obviously...
I joined up because, while I consider myself a relatively avid Tolkien fan, I don't know as much about Lord of the Rings as I do Star Wars. I've got a little bit of brushing-up to do (as well as actually buying the books, though I have some really nice posters) so I thought Barrow-downs would be a good site to sign up on.

Hello everybody I am new here at the barrowdowns forum but I have visited the site frequently.
Well....a short presentation then. My name is Marcus and I come from a country which lies in northern regions of Europe. Yes that is right I am a swede ;)
I am only 17 years old so therefore I am still a student. My maine subjects are social science and languages.
In my spare time I like to hang out with friends but that I seldom do, instead I am home and studying.
I have read the lord of the rings trilogy several times(3), the hobbit one time, The silmarillon two times at least!, the book of lost tales (1 and2)
Part from that I have also read different articles about JRR Tolkien and his life.
I consider myself a true Lord of the rings fan and I am pretty sure I have decent knowledge about the books and middlearth.
My main interest in middlearth is the valar, I find them very intersting beacuse they posses such great power.
At this forum I hope to learn a lot more about middlearth and the various cultures that exists there.
Yours sincerely/ Marcus.

Welcome to the Barrow-downs, Marcus, and Audriedi... enjoy being dead... mwha-ha-ha-ha. I know that I have, anyhow. *giggles*
Okay, enough with the... ummm... formalities... and now I must demand how on Earth you made it to the Barrow-downs without me noticing, master! *glares, and hides garlic pizzas that she WAS using to take over Barrow-downs with...* (And to the uninformed, which should be about everyone, it's a joke between Jandalf/Audriedi and I that I'm her 'Padawan'. Insane one, I might add... with garlic... anyone who was at the Barrow-downs birthday party would've noticed that...)
And Marcus, you will learn here... the Barrow-downs is the most informitive site on the internet when it comes to Tolkien, and that's saying a LOT!!! You'll like it here, or my name isn't' Eowyn Skywalker!!
Mwha-ha-ha... I'm no longer a newbe... giggle.

Hullo! :)
I’ve been lurking here since January and have finally decided to join the ranks of the dead. I love this site, it is definitely the best Tolkien-related forum I’ve been to. I’m 14, and am a newbie to Tolkien, only having read LotR last Christmas, but since then I’ve re-read it three times and also The Hobbit twice, The Silmarillion twice, and I bought UT recently and will certainly read it soon.
My nickname is from Quickbeam's song about the rowan trees. I really like the sound of it, and was surprised it hasn't already been taken.

Welcome to the Downs, Carnimírië! I like your name, and I think you'll enjoy UT.
Enjoy being dead!

Yes, welcome! It's actually fun being dead once you get used to the whole disimbodied voice thing... giggle. Also, being a blue wraithy thing isn't that bad either, I mean, Obi-Wan survived.
Oh... yeah... I'm suppose to be welcoming people.. sorry. Anyhow, welcome to the Downs!!!!
How long does it take to stop being a newbee anyhow? Giggle.

Welcome, welcome... Live long and prosper. Or not... more appropriately for this place, die young and stay long. To all newbies, welcome, and may you enjoy your death.
A tip for all, whether ye be young or old, new... or not...: Don't be afraid of the Books Forum. We may talk like boring old teachers ;) who know more than is probably healthy about LotR, but we really are nice people. Don't let the 'academic' speech intimidate you, just throw in your own two cents. Chances are good that it'll be appreciated.
If you aren't into the book-style stuff, I heartily suggest haunting Middle Earth Mirth for a few laughs.

....Um, actually, if you don't think that you can write book style posts, be afraid of the Books section, because someone'll rate your posts down... stick to Middle-earth Mirth... *giggles* That's my haunt... so... much... fun. Also, don't feel intiminated by the RPG section's high standards... it's really quite easy, you know. (Plus, when I first started, I knew NOTHING about RPing... Barrow-downs is a great place to learn how to role play!). Welcome all the new people! May the Force be with you... or, maybe, may the RING be with you... snrk.
But don't be too afraid to post... most of us don't bite, and our bark isn't that bad either... it's the really REALLY oldbe's that you'll have to worry about... the one's who think that there's no need for mods, because they know everything... sigh.

Hey Im wilwarin538,
I`m obviously completely obsessed with LOTR(books and movies). I saw the movies then read the books, LOTR then the Hobbit and Ill be reading the sil soon. The movies were great but I enjoyed the books better, mostly cause the movies cut out alot of good stuff, like Tom Bombadil for instance. So anyway, Im happy to be able to discuss my opinions with you guys. :)

Alrighty then..
My name is Angalot Wen, and here's the story of how I ended up here:
I read and fell in love with the LotR in the year of 2001. I was completely obsessed with it, and at that point I didn't even know that they were making movies! So when I found out, I went mad and died out of happiness. Since then I've been hanging around here, but I've never taken the time to register until now.
Now i'm learning how to speak and write the noble tounge of quenya. (There's a very useful course at Ardalambion (http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/))
Ohh! BTW: Guess where i'm from! (Hint: Look at the location-thingy to the left)

Angalot Wen, Wilwarin, and other recent arrivals,
Please feel free to come to the Shire and introduce yourself in character in the Green Dragon Inn! Once you've done that, we'll be glad to let you know about new RPGs.
Again, welcome to the Downs!

Hello Everyone! :p
I have been meaning to join the forum for some time now. Better late than never I suppose. Some of you may know me from the Barrowdowns chat room, I spend way too much time there! lol! Perhaps this forum will provide me a more productive outlet for my spare time.
I have loved the world of J.R.R. Tolkien since before I could read. My father introduced me to the Hobbit as a bedtime story. The imagery and wonder the stories imparted are with me today. And in my minds eye Middle-Earth is still viewed with the color and clarity of a child's imagination.
I joined in hopes of finding like-hearted folks, who share Tolkien's love of beauty, and nature, and living things. I have a feeling I won't be disapointed. ;)

Greetings and Salutations,
I am Lady kealin a very old newcomer. I am soon to be 51 years old and have been a fan of Tolkien since my early teens. I am married to a scotsman, kilt wearing , bagpipe playing, head of Clan Gordon for Indiana and Kentucky. He reminds one most of a cross between Gimli and one of the Urukhai. Gads what a
picture. :D I am the eldest girl of seven children. Being sixteen years older than the younger siblings, I used the Hobbit and LOTR as bedtime stories. That begat the rest of the family as Tolkien addicts. Well that should be enough to be going on. I rather jumped in here without even a pocket handkerchief. Elen silva lummen omentilmo. Lady Kealin

Welcome, Lady Kealin! You'll find that quite a few forum members have been fans of Tolkien's books for many years! To get to know some of them, check out the Tolkien Coming of Age Club (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=4665) thread, where you'll not only find a comfortable rocking chair to sit down in, but also lots of entertaining stories to read. (The first post there links to the predecessor thread, where everything started.) Hope you enjoy yourself here!

Hello everyone,
My name is Dylan, and I'm a Tolkien fanatic as well as an internet junkie. I spend most of my time online obsessing about the work of Tolkien. I'm a moderator on LOTRUK.com (http://www.lotruk.com) and I have recently taken the decision to build my own forum (http://dillson.proboards30.com/index.cgi) to show my admiration for Tolkien and my love for his work.
Offline, I'm a student at a 6th form college in the North-East of England, UK.

I am new here, and I joined because I am a fellow LOTR lover. I found this site through another LOTR forum- LOTRfanaticsplaza. WEll, I from the States, and have loved LOTR since about 5th grade, but I have renewed my interests recently with the advent of the movies. some other random stuff- I am a hobbit fancier... 07-04-2004, 07:32 PM
Hello, I'm Fallinel, a Shoreland Piper. I am not new to Tolkien's works; I've read and re-read The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion , and Unfinished Tales . I've read a few volumes of HoME, and I love the Lays of Beleriand . I hope I can add something to a few of the discussions here.
This site has an excellent reputation for RPGs, and I hope I can work my way up from the Shire, to participate in some of the more advanced RP threads here. I am not new to storytelling or Tolkien-themed RP writing either, and I have played a variety of roles and invented many different characters with colorful, heroic, or tragic pasts. There are many more waiting in the wings of my imagination, and I think a few of them can find homes here.

Once upon a time I was here, can't even remember my member name. I was the one with the "Aliens" lime green piccy of Sigorney Weaver. I thought I was Beruthiel, but I'm no longer on the lists. Well, that's what happens when you don't show your face for 8 months.
Anywhoo, for all you Tolkien newbies, I'll be the one scratching my head and looking things up for you, right along with some of the older members here.
I'm turning 40 this year, and I've recently (within the last 2 years) read some of the extra texts floating around, like The HoME, War of The Jewels...and so forth. Wonderful stuff. I learned about it here.
I'll never be able to remember everything, but I do know things Aragorn. You might call me an Aragorn fan. I got hooked after I learned all about him.
Yes, first it was Bilbo, then Frodo, then I graduated to Aragorn. There's no telling if I'll ever latch onto another character. Right now I'm stuck - and it's lasted 10 years.
So let me have it. :D

Well I'm new here at the Barrow Downs I think it looks like a pretty fancy site and a good place to enjoy the rest of my lazy summer days and hopefully be able to continue my time here even with school coming up in a little over a month ...
I grew up reading Tolkien and enjoyed the movies. (I'm 16 by the way) I had to re read the books for a summer reading project, actually, and I got absorbed in it again so I thought I'd see what's going on with Lord of the Rings in the superwide world eh?
I also wanted to check out the RPGs hereabouts and see how that works. I'll probably start looking at that as soon as i post this. Anyways, c'est tout.

Hi there! I'm new here but I'm not new to forums at all. I'm a mod on the Gamezville forums (www.gamezville.tv). My name's Joe and I'm from Manchester. I've mainly come here to role-play as this place has some excellent looking scenarios. I am new to role-playing, since almost all of my friends think it's nerdy so I've been put off the idea a little.
I've read the LoTR trilogy, the Silmarillion and The Hobbit. Peter Jackson's my favourite director, but not for the LoTR movies, but for a film called Braindead some of you may have heard of.

I just got started on this web-site for the fact that a friend of mine told me how much fun it was. My username is ninlaith because a long time before I knew about the discussion forum I found out what my name meant in Elvish so there you go.
I just graduated highschool and will be persuing a theater major when I attend college. My passions are LOTR of course, acting, singing, musicals, and movie going. Just a warning I get very passionate about the books and movies and have spasms of the mouth and can't keep it shut, so if I offend anyone, which I will desperately try not to, i sorry in advance. But thank you for reading if you did and maybe I'll read you out there.

Aniriuq Raevla (I'd call you Ani like you said, but your name is pretty and fun to type)- if you're into Gamecube and like Link, than I assume you play Windwaker? What about the old N64 stuff? (Yet another video game fan, as you're sure to notice.) Welcome to our prestigious ranks.
Inferno: Welcome. The secret to getting past the dreaded newbie stage is simple: post. Not pointless posts, but contribute to discussions. Be honest, but respectful, and don't be afraid to show off your assuredly incredible mind.
Bekah: Welcome back. I hope it hasn't been anything bad that's kept you away. If so, I'm very sorry, and if not, what have you been waiting for? ;)
ohtatyaro: No worries, everybody fits in here somewhere. If you're the book-learnin' type, check out the Books forum, or the New Silmarillion project. If you want to laugh until you're fit to burst, take a stroll over to Mirth. A movies fan? Than the Movies forum is for you. See? A little somethin' for everyone.

Mae govannen everyone !!!
What a wonderful place I've found in my wanderings ! :)
I've re-discovered my love for Tolkien's works after long years when it's been dormant (but never gone ..) and now I find myself in the right place where I can share this marvelous obsession :D with like-minded people.
See you soon !! :)

Technically, I'm not new, but I haven't been on here for months and a lot of things have changed since then.
Firstly, I'm an official PPC Agent! W00t! I patrol the Silmarillion canon with my partner, Hwin.
I'm still doing the Golden Ring Marathon and Hwin and I are organising a meeting with the manager of the Embassy theatre in Wellington.
I have 4 cats, Riley, black, was abandoned as a kitten. Panther, black, free to a good home. Ebony and Nero, both black, $500 each, utterly adorable as only 7 month old kittens can be.
I am obsessed with the English language, especially it's older forms...and Rammstein are awesome!
If I need to be yelled at for posting here, do so, I won't mind. I just felt that it would be weird if I started posting here again when no-one would remember me.

The PPC. *settles down in chair for a long explaination* All of you who already know this, just pass this post by.
I suppose that you know of Fanfiction? *sees nods and continues* Well, there's such thing as Bad!Fic. Really Bad!Fic. Like Celebrian...*shudders*
Anyway, you know of the dreaded Mary-sue, right? The 'perfect' girl who comes into a story and makes all the canon characters fall in love with her.
'Oh, Legolas,' Princess SugarPlumFairy of Random Flying Forest sighed. 'Willest thou lovest me forever?'
You know the type. They're horrible and will send canon characters out of character too.
Legolas smiled bashfully. 'Foreverest my love. I willest lovest thou forever.'
Occassionally they use bad english like the bits above.
The PPC hunts them down, kills them and restores the plot. PPC stands for Protectors of the Plot Continuum. Several other departments deal with different offenses, bad geography, acts of violence, and my department deals with Silmarillion canon violations.
That's the PPC explained. If you want to find out more, go here: PPC Site (http://oddlots.digitalspace.net/PPC/)

Oh, nothing terrible. I'm just really busy with school and everything else.
Morgy asked a question about PMs which is probably going to be asked again, so I'll answer it here.
Down at the bottom right-hand corner of the PM, there are two boxes: forward (which is bigger), and quote. Click on quote; if you don't want to keep the quote of the PM you're replying too, just delete it.
Does that make sense?
Anyway, a hugely warm welcome to everyone new.
Oh, and I'm going to try to get Alk to put up my pirate pic as well in the Downs Photo Gallery...
Congratulations, Morgy. PPCing is a noble career in the fanfiction world. :D

I think what Nuindacilien was asking was how to change the avatar judging from this post:
Hello all! I'm new here. I have a question. How do you get the avatars to download? I tried putting one in, but it said the URL wasn't right, even though it was a jpeg.
If it was a JPEG then it wasn't a true URL. There is an option that says to "Use Custom Avatar." Click that and then upload it in the bottom space. The space that says to upload avatar. It won't have the "http://" thing there either.
A JPEG is an image shared on your computer, not an image on the web.
Cheers

OK, My (main) LO's are Denethor (of Gondor, not the one from the First Age), Feanor, Celebrimbor, Elu, Celeborn, Thranduil and Elrond.
Yes. There are actually many, many more than that, but as has been pointed out frequently, I am fickle. The above are the ones that I stick to no matter what.

Ah, well, my younger sister is yet to read Tolkien (funny how over a thousand pages of very small type in a book the size of the yellow pages can put one off...), and my older sister doesn't have much interest in computers or the internet, and wouldn't touch forums with a barge pole - to which of course, you could reply 'whose got a barge pole?!' ;)
Riders of Rohaan - ah, a hobbit man! ;) So The Saucepan Man has a fan? Interesting... Welcome.
Vlakorados - ooh, this could be interesting...*evil* And hey, I like her name - your sister's an excellent writer and RPGer, by the way - don't suppose it run's the family...? I mean, you know, if you wanted to drop by The Shire and try it out...*shamelessly plugging the RPG forums*
Shia'tan - lol, an interesting self-description! Hmm, I wouldn't bother coming to Merry Olde England really...the weather is up and down like nobody's bsuiness at the moment. You like rain, right? ;) No, sorry, sorry...welcome to the Downs.
Mattius - *mouth drops open* Good lord, the dead are rising! Mattius, welcome back, how are you? Ooh, excellent, 'tis all well... Welcome back, my friend, welcome back!
Arie - welcome back to you as well - like Mattius said, 'it's all for the best'. You'll get used to it again - welcome back.

Greetings fellow Tolkien fans, I have been looking around the Barrow Downs now for some weeks and finally decided to join.
I have been reading Tolkien’s works for around 20 years now and in that time I have built up a nice collection of books based on Middle Earth. I have an extensive library starting with my favourites the Sil, hobbit, LOTR, HoMe; I also have many books written by other authors on Tolkien works. I hope that over time I can share my love of Tolkien with you all.

Hi, Namo Mandos! Welcome to the Downs. With a name and avatar like that, you fit in perfectly.
I'm also a long time book collector. The stuff sure piles up over the years!
Come down and introduce yourself in character at the Green Dragon Inn in the Shire. We'd love to see you.

Thanks child of the 7th age, the avatar is actually an illusion; can you see the other image?
you can see the large image here (http://www.zx-12r.org/Funny%20Stuff/Illusion1.JPG)
do you see a couple or a skull? Have a look at the large version of the picture the link is above.

Welcome back, Arien. I hope your lengthy absence wasn't because something bad happened. If so, I'm sorry; if not, what took you?

Feanor, GCSEs are national exams you work towards for two years, doing pieces of externally moderated coursework for each throughout, then take the GCSE exams at the end of Year 11 (American year 10). Most pupils take 8 to 10 GCSE subjects - some schools, especially private ones, take a subject a year early (for example, I got the results of my ICT this Summer, but I do the other 9 next May). The killers are languages - you get about three exams for each!
Arien - welcome back indeed! I hope you got the results you wanted from your GCSEs :) Are you staying on for AS and A2s?
Lurker Bombadil - LOL, I like the name! Glad you finally decided to join us as a member - welcome in your, erm, new position? :D
Isilmë - Hooray, an RPGer! Welcome to the Downs, Isilmë and, well, I'll doubtless see you around the Shire!

Welcome, to all newcomers! Hope you all enjoy being dead!
I've an Announcement, and I thought here would be the best place to post it. I've recently looked up my Elvish name in the name generator, and it is--- Mithhuaniel! so instead of calling me "elronds_daughter" you can call me Mithhuaniel if you like. that's how i'll be signing my posts anymore. it's right down there in my sig, if you noticed.
just thought i'd let you all know.

Welcome to the Downs, RadomRadagast! Yes, in Novices and Newcommers, you'll find the answer to lots of questions. However, if it's not mentioned there, try Private Messaging someone for the answer :D BTW (By the way), love the Lord of the Peeps avatar :)

I'm not really a new member, but I'm coming back (or trying to)! I have school and homework and all that stuff. I was the first student of the week in the school year 04-05. I'm so excited. Well, forgive me for my ignorance for I am from Tennessee and have only seen the hills. :D
Goodby y'all!
P.S. I highly recommend going to the Festival of Cultures in Cleveland, TN ( sorry, not Ohio) on Saturday, Semptember 18, 2004.
P.P.S. Please remember all of the people who died 3 years ago on 9-11 and our troops in Iraq. May God be with you.
