Haa!

Welcome Aganzir! Lommy has done a good work... :D

(If you are fast enough you might still catch Valier's ww-game. )

But really. Enjoy yourself around here as a member now and take part in everything!

And a warm welcome to all other new Downers too! May you enjoy at least as much as I have - and that's a lot.

Aganzir
10-03-2006, 11:38 AM
Thank you :p

I'm not sure if I want to take part in any WW-game yet, and Valier's sounds a little too complicated for a beginner like me. Maybe sometimes later.

Take your time...

There surely is a host of things to do around. :)

Good job Lommy (and me :p)! Aganzir, now rot happily and long! And join Valier's game or return back to life, I bet you're much much (much) better than me, you have live experince. The "thing" game is just as new to all the rest (I think). Join and you can laugh at me better. ;)

Welcome Aganzir! Don't worry, your English is fine. :)

And well done Lommy, is that 3 she's brought on board now?

(can I hear her laughing somewhere?)I guess you can. Mwahahaa. :D

I'm not sure if I want to take part in any WW-game yet, and Valier's sounds a little too complicated for a beginner like me. Maybe sometimes later.Fellow downers, don't believe her. I know how much she has stalked the 'downs and the ww games. She is probably as good in werewolf as an average wwing downer is...

And well done Lommy, is that 3 she's brought on board now? Yep. And I'm quite proud of myself. *evil grin*

But anyway, the point was: Welcome Aganzir and I loved brainwashing you!

Aganzir
10-04-2006, 10:20 AM
Than you, Kath, and Volo too (you should know I won't laugh at you :p)

But anyway, the point was: Welcome Aganzir and I loved brainwashing you!
I'm sure you did, it took you a year :p You should be sad now that the purpose of your life is gone.

Hello fellow wanderers - after much travel I am rather tired and thought I would stop by - well, for a little while perhaps.

I think Tolkien did more than write an adventure - but then you probably know that.

Look forward to meeting you all.

Hello wayseer

Welcome to these barrows of ours, may your death be an interesting one.

The Book discutions are a little slow these days, but maybe you can get them going again. If you are more interested in Sillyness, then Mirth might be your thing.

(You have the same avy as The Only Real Estel, this could produce some interesting mix-ups)

Saurreg

Wish him not an interesting death for he already passed that point of transition, instead wish him an interesting afterlife with rest of the ghouls and wandering souls here. ;) :D

And yeah, TORE has the same avatar. Looks like you will have to surrender your sig to him, rune son.

A young peredhiel walks into the room. He is wearing a plain green tunic and breechers, and has a large, flowing, brown bear-skin cloak draped off his shoulders. "Hail, Wights of Tyrn Gorthad" he calls out, "I am Thoréandan, son of Thelandan the Dúnedain and Grimordel the Elf. I am visitng from the distant land of Imladris (http://www.lotrplaza.com/forum/display_forum_topics.asp?ForumID=30), commonly known as Rivendell." Thor looks around the room and sees a few faces he vaguely recognises. "Hey Finrod, you're not FinrodFaithful from Imladris are you, by any chance?"

Thanks Gil-Galad. This is the second Tolkien related forum I have joined now. I only first watched the PJ movies beginning in January 2006, and have since then read the whole LOTR Trilogy books and the Hobbit. I am now reading the Silmarillion. I'm still very much a Newbie in respect to the world of Arda, but I'm learning quickly :)

Hi all-- I've been posting off and on for a few months now, but still consider myself a new member. Saw this thread and thought I'd say hello.

I'm a professional writer, living on a mountaintop, surrounded by woods, in New York's Hudson Valley---lots of Tolkien-esque paths and trails throughout our woods, and leading up to the somewhat famous Gunks and Ice Caves Mountain.

I've been reading Tolkien for about 10 years now, and have read UT and most of the HoME...

Anyone interested in my own work in film/television, and literary writing is welcome to visit www.myspace.com/sardy

Hey Sardy, I never thought I'd meet a really famous person in just my second day of being dead!! That's so cool. Had a look at your site. I'm pretty sure we get The Real Deal here in New Zealand. I must confess, I don't watch a lot of television though. In RL I work 12 hour shifts, 6pm to 6am the next morning, so I don't really have time to watch television. I suppose I could videotape something, but I'm just too lazy to :)

Gil - Your selection of smilies here is a little limited to my liking. Can you tell me what your policy is on hotlinking, and in particular to sites that allow and encourage being hotlinked from (I wouldn't do it without proper permission from the source site). http://www.thesmilies.com/smilies/happy0007.gif

Sardy

I'm pretty sure we get The Real Deal here in New Zealand. I must confess, I don't watch a lot of television though.

Well, Real Deal isn't in production yet, the pilot script was just awarded 1st Place for Best Original Pilot in Scriptapalooza TV 2006, so I highly doubt it's on the air in New Zealand... :) But you may be able to catch my show "Dead Tenants" which is currently airing internationally on TLC/Discovery Networks...

ThoréandanSilverleaf
10-18-2006, 10:27 AM
Sardy - Oh, I must have gotten the name wrong :) As I say, I don't watch much TV anyway. Too busy wandering around chat rooms talking to strangers about the Lord of the Rings I guess.
Gil - Was it just me, or was the Barrow Downs server down today? It kept coming up with a DNS error every time I tried to log on, yet I could navigate to other sites on the Internet quite fine.

ThoréandanSilverleaf
10-18-2006, 10:49 AM
Gil - Sorry for double-posting (I don't know if that is considered rude here or not). I was just wondering how one would go about reporting abuse or spammers here? I've noticed some recent posts by a particular member here who is using what I would consider inappropriate language in an abusive tone. I know that on the other LOTR forum that I post on, this type of behaviour would be shut down immediately, and most likely the member would have his/her account suspended forthwith.

I haven't posted anywhere outside of this thread yet as I'm still trying to learn how to navigate your menu system.

and with exploreing the site, choose which you feel like reading, if your interested in discussing Books, check out the Books Portion, if you want to read and anwser basic questions, check the newcomers portion, if you like to play a game check the quiz room and quotable quotes. if you enjoy the fun stuff of Tolkien, check out the Mirth forum. the rest is basically RPG forum and the Admin Thread.

:D Well, Hello! I somehow came across the downs whilst looking for a good place to talk about Tolkien and such things, and this seemed like the best place out there, so I promptly stole the name of a character I found interesting and registered! I've seen the movies, read the books, and also the Silmarillion. Somehow the interest died down, and my love for Tolkien's works lay dormant like a balrog under Cahadras. More recently, (to stretch my metaphor) some dwarves came and delved for mithril, so I scanned the internet...and thus came here. I look forward to taking part in the discussions here, and learning new knowledge of Arda. :)

Welcome to the Downs Laleena.

I hope your will find a nice resting place among us wights. . .

The Barrow-Downs Forum has a bit of everything, although the activity is a bit low at the moment. There is the Book section for the seriouse and in dept discutions, right now a chapter by chapter Silmarillion discution is going on.

If you have some minor questions about the books I would recomend the Novices and Newcomers area.

If you are looking for fun and sillyness we have Mirth wich has all kinds of stuff going on, amongst other things there are the famouse werewolf games. In fact there is a game starting soon that still need a few players. There is also a Quiz Room that could need an extra dead soul and of course the RPG section.

If you have questions don't hesitate to ask in a thread or by PM's, the dead in these Barrows are suprisingly friendly.

Thanks for the replies and advice everybody. I must say I was quite shocked by that. Each to their own I guess. I believe Tolkien was a scholar and a gentleman, who spent many long hours in his study drinking with friends and having interesting discussions. I'm sure that had he been alive today we would see him here on the Internet doing the same thing. What a shame that some hooligans don't take a lesson from him ;)

In relation to collecting miniatures, I went to the Armageddon Pulp Culture Expo today here in New Zealand. It is a Sci-Fi & Fantasy convention. I bought a bust ornament of Lord Elrond. It was made by Weta Workshops, so the detail is absolutely amazing. They were the ones who did a lot of the animatronics on the PJ movies. I also bought 4 books to add to my collection about Middle Earth, including a very interesting book called "The Science of Middle Earth", by Henry Gee.

I've recently transplanted to 1000-miles-from-nowhere, Montana, and quite frankly, you all have quickly become a favorite source of entertainment. I mean this in the best possible light ;)

I grew up in/with this world, have never known life without it. I'm an annual re-reader, and *ducks* I love the movies as well. To the latter I'll add, for the record: I prefer Captains in plate. :D

As one says to a room full of people; Hello! :D My name is Erunámo. I really don't like my keyboard much as it gives me troubles trying to type the character codes for my name accents. I have read the LoTR books several times, have read the Hobbit a few, and attempted to read the Silmarillion once, a few years ago. Some of you may know a close personal friend of mine, (not that I'm naming names here) who has introduced me to this site. She has tried several times now to get me on here, so I figured it's probably a good time to do so. I have been writing poetry, yes in english, for nearly five years now as a habit. Bonjour,

My name is aravanessë. I am a French man; I live in Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain) and I am a Tolkiendil for years; I belong to the Association Tolkiendil (Tolkiendil is the biggest French website about the Tolkien's légendarium, and I am one of the webmasters of Montagne du Destin (i.e. Mount Doom); I don’t write English very well, but I make the promise to you that I will do my better (Don’t be afraid to correct me when my English is too bad : one needs to forge to become a blacksmith, as we say in France).
A list of what I have read: All the HoMe, Silm 77, LotR, The Hobbit, UT, Vinyar Tengwar (from 21 to 48), Parma Eldalamberon from(1 to 7, and 11, 13, 15), RGEO, RC, TATB, M&C, Letters… (I am better in reading English than in writing it ;)).
In any case, I won’t post a lot of messages because typing in English takes me long time, but I will read you regularly, in particular the forum which deals with New Silmarillion in which I take great interest (I am a great detractor of Christopher : Evil Chris(t), as we called him ^^ ).

Cordially,

aravanessë

Oki... I'm not exactly a new member for I think I was registered in this forum some years before, but I never wrote much and obviously I have been deleted by the system (?), so I will make a new start today (:

I'm not a native speaker myself and I left school this summer, so my English probably will be far away from perfect, but I've experienced no problems with that in this forum so far.
Please feel free to correct my mistakes, I'll do my best - just like aravanessë (;
I'm more a silent reader than a writer anyway...

One question to you all, is there still a location finder online?

And @Naria: Why do you feel left out?

"The people that does not have English as a first language are so good that you don't notice. . . .so you need not worry":D Tsk, tsk Kath. Though, some of the non-native English speakers have a very fluent English so that their non-nativeness does not show (Mac, Estelyn, spawn, Lhuna, Nilp, HerenIstarion and some others) some don't speak it as fluently (like me), but we're mostly understood. Though, as an advice, don't speak anything of "row soldiers"....

Good day my fellow (If I may use the phrase) Tolkienites. My name is Athrasuriel, or, as it has built up over my years of foruming and creating fictional characters, Loter Athrasuriel Arthious i'Noldo. Of course, my real name is not spectacular (but far harder to pronounce). I live in Glasgow, Scotland, and I'm 13. I first read LotR when I was 8, followed by the Hobbit and then The Silmarillion. I do, however divergent in dialogue as they may be from the books, enjoy watching the films. I now fail to read any of Tolkiens greatest works for pleasure enough any more. I prefer reading, or rather, studying them. You may notice (or not as the case may be), that this 'studying' of the books has effected how I speak (though not my accent, you will never take that from me! :p ).

Anyway, hello!

Just to show you how friendly I am, and since you seem to be from Winsconsin (where if my football geography is not incorrect you can find Green Bay and the Packers) I am inviting myself over to your place so that I can see Brett Farve play before he retires.

Greetings to all of you dead, not yet dead, risen or whatever all of you here might be!
Since it's my custom to probe into something before I settle down there, I have already explored this site a little bit and took part in some polls a little bit (as some of you might have noticed), but it's to your credit that after a very short time I feel this place quite comfortable and I intend to (and hope I will) settle down here and rest (in peace, I hope :D ) for some time... I think there is no need to introduce myself too deeply, if I take part in here, surely it will leak out what my personality is like, but if you have any needs to know more about me, just ask ;)
The most important is that I am Tolkien fan (ah! How unexpectable!) and maybe I could also mention that I am for long time a DM of a company of crazy D&D players, and that with the help of God I just fulfilled my lifetime dream to run a campaign in the ME world... yay!!! So one of the reasons for which I come here is also to keep an eye of details of the ME which could be important for our campaign and which I want to be sure about and with which I hope you, as devoted fans, will be able to help me out!
So thanks for preparing this nice place for us fans, I really like it here on the first sight, hope it will be just better and better...

Hello everyone!

I am not exactly a new member, but rather an old member long gone and now returned. I was formerly known as Cúdae, but left roughly 3 years ago. I tried to retrieve my old password to get that name back, but as my e-mail address has since changed, it didn't work out. (So if the administrators wish to do any late fall/early winter cleaning, go right ahead and clear that account out! :) )

Anyway, I notice that many, many things have changed in the years I've been gone! I'm not sure I understand this reputation system, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it after I wade through that long thread on it! I also do not recognize many names. Perhaps there have been many new members or perhaps my memory lapses. Hmm...

In any case, it is good to be back! I have missed this particular fandom and look forward to spirited debate with all of you once again!

This place is not cheery! Destruction and pain lurks in every corner of these haunted barrows, lots of ghastly creatures dwells in this dark place.

In the Quiz Room you will find Killer Penguins

In the Mirth section the horrible creature they call Hookbill dwells with his spawn.

In quotes no one ventures save the brave

Hello. I'm new here but have been part of the Tolkien community for several years. I was a member of the TORn message boards; I joined there in 2003 but have not posted much in a long time. This place seems more active, and the forum layout is far better.

I chose this name because my main interest in Tolkien's work lies with the isle of Númenor and its history. Tar-Telperien (or Tar-Telperiën, either spelling is valid) was the tenth Ruler of Númenor. I have used this nickname in several Tolkien-related areas I frequent, such as TORn and the Tolkien Gateway wiki.

I will probably mainly post in the Books forum, since I have quite a bit of knowledge about the Legendarium and greatly like to discuss its fine points with others. The movies are quite good, but I pay them less attention. I actually do have a sense of humor, though, so you might see me in the Middle-earth Mirth section as well. I find RPing rather fun, but I am not interested in roleplaying in any other area than Númenor, so I will probably not show up there.

Of the books, The Silmarillion is my favorite, because it contains so many powerful and tragic parts. I am partial to The Hobbit, and fascinated by the material printed in The History of Middle-earth. I have gained a pretty good grasp of Quenya, and know a bit of Sindarin as well.

Howdy folks,

Just discovered this site yesterday, and have mooched around a bit before making intros. Where to start? Well, I've been reading Tolkien for around 25 years now, since a friend gave me a loan of The Hobbit, have read most books at least twice or 3 times, and am a massive fan of the First Age material. I suppose I'm a bit weird in that I read The Silmarillion before Lord Of The Rings, and maybe weirder yet in that I don't actually object to CT's original material in The Silmarillion (in fact the Ruin of Doriath that he wrote is one of the most memorable and moving episodes in the book so far as I'm concerned).

The "New Silmarillion" concept presented here is of major interest to me as I'd been playing with something similar in my own head for quite some time.

Looking forward to having a few more good reads of material here, and would be very interested in finding any theories about the latter history of Maglor (another thing that stuck with me very strongly).

By the way, I normally go by "mh" (which is just my initials), the "again" was just added to meet the minimum length requirements!

Ta for now,

mh

Hi
A friend of mine (Alkanoonion) who is also member here just showed me your site so with his help I decided to join up. :D

I have been reading Tolkien for some time, starting in High School with the hobbit and have progressed to the stage that I now feel that I can positively contribute to the many fine discussions on your site.

I also play Guild Wars with Alk and if you are a fan of the game you can message me in game or E-mail me

Hope to chat with you all at length in the future.

12-17-2006, 09:22 AM
Hi

You can call me Grok, I'm in year 11 (15-16) and I live in Coventry the UK. I first read the Hobbit when I was about 6 and I have been a Tolkien fan since. I have read the Hobbit, LoTR, Unfinished Tales and Silmarillion and I feel I have enough knowledge of Tolkien ad his works to join this site.

I have been a member of Tolkien communities, especially forums, since 2000. After the release of RoTK most of the forums I was on began to lose member and by 2004 many forums were dead and forgotten. I indeed myself began to lose interest in LOTR and have only recently rekindled my interest in the great works after coming across my books in the bottom of a cupboard.

As for how I found this site? I was googling Imrahil and their was a member on this forum of that name and it came up with his profile. I hope you will all welcome me in your little community (or should I say big) and I hope to speak to you all soon.

Grok- you’re local Communist.

Howdy! Don't worry, it's not that easy to get lost here in the 'downs... a "wrong" click will always lead to new and interesting discoveries! So just click away and see where your luck leads you to.

But looking at your name and your signature, may I suggest you visit the "Be careful with what you wish for" thread, on the Mirth section? I think you might enjoy it.

Hello to you all, fans of Tolkien.
I am both new and old to this site, but it's natural for you not to know me,so I should kindly introduce myself.
I am Yancho,20 1/2 years old,from Bulgaria.I am currently a law student 2nd year.
I am a fan of Tolkien since I was a child and have read several of his books (not only The Hobbit,Silmarilion and The Lord of the Rings).I am fascinated from the world of The Middle earth, but the very spirit of its characters and nature. There is no other theme which has had such a great hold on me (maybe SW for a while, but not so clsoe).
I began with the words that I'm not new to barrowdowns, because I feel that I ain't.Long ago - 4,maybe 5 years I used to write in the guestbook and to chat with some of the other fans in the barrowdowns chat. But back then my i-net connection was too slow to visit the site too often and to really explore it completely. Now I reenter this wonderful site.I hope for a warm welcome and to find/refind many friends here.
I am a big fan of Boromir,so that's why I use his name as a nickname.
Well, that's my intro.Hope to have nice time here.
Namarie.

P.S.Ah,yes - and happy new year to ya all!Hope it will be better than the last one!

As a lot of this topic, I have to say I am new as well. I found out about the Barrowdowns through a friend who used to be on this messageboard as well, he referred to this quit a time ago and I remembered it lately, asked him about the URL and registered.
I am Dutch, and 14 years of age. I starded reading Tolkien stuff about to be honest... maybe 1.5-2 years ago :D I wasn't much of a reader for Lord Of The Rings to be honest, so after seeing the movie I didn't immiditly starded to read. By now I've read af course the LoTR's, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. For a Dutch feast very much like Christmas (Sinterklaas to be accurate, on the fifth of December.) I got the first 3 volumes of The History Of Middle-Earth and Unfinished Tales, I Finished Unfinished Tales not long ago so I am now busy (since a few days) in The Book Of Lost tales pt. 1
Well, there's not much more for me too tell (live you're life and live it well <- Sorry that's a Megadeth lyric, after the first line of it I couldn't control myself and typ the second line :D )

Mae Govannen,

Ime Idril,
I am certainly not new to middle earth, but I am to this forum.
I hope to use this forum as a help for my further writing and study of Tolkiens work.
I write fan fiction, on lord of the rings fan fiction.
My hobbies are reading, writing, singing and music. I am a new zealander, of mostly English but a little scotch back ground. A tiny bit of Jewish blood in me too. Of which I am proud of

I have read the hobbit, LOTR,the sil and lost tales both 1 and 2.
I really enjoy explroing the people of Arda, their personalities and problems ;)

I do not plan to post very regularly on here, about once a week, but look for me!

Oh and I'm a Christian with very old fashioned world views, or so I'm told. I agree!

Hi! I'm also an old fan who's new here, although not Christian. Course, Tolkien was a staunch Catholic conservative himself :D I love his remark about his hippy fans, which I can't remember. Here's another one, since I can't find the one I want:
"Art moves them and they don't know what they've been moved by and they get quite drunk on it. Many young Americans are involved in the stories in a way that I'm not." ~On being asked if he was pleased by the enthusiasm of his American fans

Hello everyone,
I'm new here and so I figured I'd stop here at the new members section and say hi. I've been roleplaying for years, though I'm just getting back into forum RPG's, I've been an avid fan of Tolkien and his works for quite some time, and I'm happy to say I'm thrilled and awed by the quality and friendly atmosphere here. I'm more used to heavy fighting Roleplaying since I'm a fencer and swordfighter in real life, but I think I'll find the change to more conversational and adventure-some RPG's to be a tempting new horizon. I hope to see you all around and to get involved as soon as possible.

Idril, the RPG forums you can get all the information you need on them.

I will assure you something though, and tell you a little story here. I never was the RPG type person, didn't expect to ever do it, never really was a writer, and just didn't seem like it was something that would interest me. The 'Downs RPG forums are probably the best put together and best organized RPGs I have ever come acrossed, and because of that it sucked me in. I'm not a regular at RPing but occasionally I get a knack to just join in something fun and something I'll enjoy for a while. The RPG forums on the downs are far better (as far as the quality of writing, the quality of the scenarios, and the overall organization) than any other forum I have seen. I'm sure you'll love it. :)

Welcome Endgame, I also was amazed at how well this forum had constructed it's RPGs. The typical thing about RPGs I'd find...and what probably turned me off to them as not being interested is either 1) The forum just didn't have them because of how chaotic they could be...or 2) They were so badly organized, all over the place, and just out there, I never got interested. But as you can very well tell here, the mods do take care of their RPG forums very well. Tolkien spent a great deal of time on his stories, but he also experienced life away from the story...life with his family, colleagues, and such, and did so much other work outside Middle-earth that often goes unnoticed. ;)

Welcome teleriferchnyfain...I love that quote. There was another one I vaguely remember where Tolkien was talking about this one kid who came up to him and was completely enshrined to the books. In which he sullenly later responded 'I have ruined that kids life.' That's always something important to remember I think...the books are here for our enjoyment and for places like this, not as something we should let rule our lives. :D

Wayland
01-11-2007, 02:46 AM
I've been lurking around this forum for a while and finally thought I'd join up, as it seems a cosy enough corner. I have a liking for history and fantasy literature - I blame Narnia at primary school, then Earthsea, then...! I had an enjoyable period playing RuneQuest with some college mates (nostalgia).

I'm no expert at any of the above, just a third-rate dabbler at best. I'm re-reading Lotr, after a gap of many years, having got quite muddled up by watching the first two films and not quite sure if my memory of the book was correct etc.

Anyway, that's about it for now I guess.
