Welcome, Healing_Heart and Westwood!

I check out the chatroom on occasion, but it's so different there. Different people, usually, and I'm accustomed to the ... oh, the atmosphere here, if you will. I'm not sure what I'm saying. I like the forums (fora?) better.

Hello everyone, much like Healing Heart I have been a visitor to this site for a while but have only just joined up. I have enjoyed reading some of the discussions and I hope that I can participate in some in the future.

I've been a fan of Tolkien for about 5 years. I always intended reading the books but never actually did it. When I heard that they were starting to make the films I jumped into action, and bought LOTR. In the lead-up to my Christmas exams in 1st year in college I couldn't study because I was so engrossed in the books. No book, or anything at all, has had such an impact on my imagination. Having read and re-read LOTR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales, I am finally after getting some of the HoME books.

Anyway, that's my story. See you all around...

Greetings from Imrahil, the Prince of Dol Amroth

I just found this board and became interested because I like to discuss all things LOTR and only one of my friends has actually read the LOTR and Silmarillion and worth talking to about this...
I read all of the LOTR last year and am about halfway through The Silmarillion. I have also enjoyed Peter Jackson's films even though Imrahil is nowhere to be seen...
I am looking forward to some good Middle Earth discussions...

Hello,
What a nice place. I'm one of those old Tolken fans. I had read LOTR at least seven times before I even heard about the movie. I'm certainly no expert on Tolkien, but I will probably chime in from time to time. (I'm one of those guys that makes notes in the margins.) Would love to discuss LOTR, The Silmarillion, or The Hobbit with anyone. I've read them all many times and get something new each time I re-read them. Looking forward to some wonderful discussions.

Hello to anyone who has read this far into the introductions page, or just jumped here to reply to my post.

Im another newbie, and I have been a fan of LotR for about the time the second movie came out. Their was so much about the movie that I liked that I was hooked and finally read the trilogy after several attempts in my younger years. Now Im reading the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales. I really enjoy the stories of Numenor and Rohan the most because I see a lot of the good and bad in humanity in both of those cultures.

Ne ways, I hope this will be an interesting site to chat to people about.

Hi, am new to this site. Like the rest of you people in here (maybe), i was taken deep into Tolkien's imagenary world, that at times i feel the legendarium is too short. Many question are remained unanswered, unexplained, unreveleaved.

This site, i believe, will give me oppurtunity to express my ideas and gaining new infos on Tolkien's work.

"...at the silence of the night i walked among them unseen, unnoticed. I spy on them at the council. I knew they carry something..something i wants to know. I slipped with them into the darkness and trailed them. I stalked on the slimy creature, while he was busy stalking them. Times, i went before them..looking, learning. I lied down on the broken bridge, and watch them falling into the unknown. That is until, they were broken and runs in different parts. Now whom should i follow?....i was there when all things end..."

Wish it was me. :-) ??Nah..its my imagination again..sigh...

"How is Gil-Galad so mighty and handsome!" heh heh yeah...

Ahem... :(

I think that Mr. Gil means here, in quiet frank observation from his peers is:

" How egocentric, but fortunately punnish Gil-Galad is..."

Not to intrench upon anything, we all have our problems. For example, I rant on about things when someone has their historical facts all in a clutter. So, thus we have negative reputation options to discreedly (I do hope so) to remind others to keep on topic.

By the way, so I am on topic, welcome Eledhewin! It is always nice to see new members show their talent in the forum. I anticipate to see you here exploring your avenues of thought and imagination. If you like crafting stories, aspecially with others, I would recommend visiting the RPG's.

Hey, I'm a girl myself, so I'm not so jealous about real or imaginary girlfriends... :p

Personally, and from observation, research and such, I don't doubt that Galad has a girlfriend. But, I would like just to give some advice to him if he is curious why responses like this will happen. To have a partner is a wonderful thing, and 'spreading the happiness' is another. I don't think Gil's partner is jealous, but I know if I was in a situation such as this I would be alittle curious with these happenings and phrases. Trust me, this is from my own past experiences, which my significant thought-consuming partner had some suspicious activities of their own they had to bring eventually to the surface. You can guess the ending of that chapter. In anyways, good luck Gil. ;)

on another note, I've missed in greeting some of the other new members! So, I would like to give a wonderful welcome to:

Greetings. I'm new. I'm an 18 year old soon-to-be-college girl that has been obsessed with LOTR and Tolkien since the age of 8. I will be (after months of deliberating) attending radford University in the fall, where I will be majoring in fine arts ith a concentration in museum studies and art history and either majoring or minoring in psychology...or someother such nonsense. I'm something of a geek. I am an IB student (if anyone wants to know what PAIN is let me know and I will fill them in) I am active as a techie in my school drama program, where I lurk in the catacombs and catwalks of the backstage area..kinda like the phantom of the opera..only no murders...and no cool cape (I plan to rectify this as soon as the sewing machine is fixed). And I need to end this since I'm supposed to be working on my Bryce animation project ( 3-D animation, similar to what is used in some video games...it's not as cool as it sounds)...ttfn...

What's up! I'm new to the site and the title said to introduce yourself so here I am. I've been a Tolkein fan ever since I read the Hobbit in third grade. I own all three books and I have The Fellowship of the Ring 2nd edition. One of my friends told me about this site so here I am. I loved all three movies and I think that Peter Jackson did the best anybody could do with The Lord of the Rings, visually that is, so don't say otherwise. I'm a rising junior and I like sharks.

Folwren

Greeting and Salutations to everyone. I am fairly new here. I arrived last week sometime and I leaped immediately into the conversations on the books and a few on the movies.

I have to admit that I've only read a few books by Tolkien...The LotR, naturally, and The Hobbit, and the Sil, though that was some time ago, and most of the Lays of Beleriand, and then Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wootton Major, Tree and Leaf, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, which is a collection of poetry by Tolkien. So, though I don't know the history of Middle-Earth much before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, I do know those four books well.

I'm still getting to know my way around the Down's, so any advise on PMing, signatures, how to converse without making enemies, or any other complicated thing would be thankfully accepted.

Welcome to the Downs Folwren, I think I have seen you around.

any advise on PMing, signatures, how to converse without making enemies, or any other complicated thing would be thankfully accepted.

PMing - for advice or to speak about an off-topic point usually.
Siggies - ignore the current battle for Tol-in-Gauroth ones, it's too confusing!
Avoiding enemies - do not post 'your ideas are stupid' and you should be safe.

Cailín
06-29-2005, 03:01 AM
Hello everyone!

I am also new here. I have been reading your discussion for quite some time and could not resist signing up. I have only read the Lotr trilogy and the Hobbit, so I really don't know much about Middle Earth, but I'm a big fan of the story and especially the Hobbit I can read a hundred times.

I guess I will just start posting and getting to know the site a little. See you all soon.

Welcome Folwren and Cailin.
so any advice on PMing, signatures, how to converse without making enemies, or any other complicated thing would be thankfully accepted.
PMing: it's fun. Don't be afraid to send a PM to anyone, because the secret is, we all get this warm and fuzzy feeling (like swallowing a cat ;)) when we see that somebody wrote something just for us. :)

Signatures: many times they're your favorite passages from books, but they can also be random silly quotes, references to weird things... really anything. Mine comes from The Saucepan Man, who was not-so-subtly hinting that the phantom and I needed to get serious.

Conversing without making enemies: Don't talk to burrahobbit. :p No, just kidding. As long as you are polite and willing to learn, you'll do wonderfully.

Welcome both of you, and enjoy your time here.

Gil-Galad
06-29-2005, 09:48 AM

Feanor of the Peredhil
06-29-2005, 11:32 AM
Aww heck, Gil. I'm not even sure what you mean by under-post. You may as well put it here for us all to learn.

Gil-Galad
06-29-2005, 12:37 PM
Under-posting is basically trying to outdo a previous post, or trying to make yourself feel superior by making a previous post feel stupid, for example, "This is how it really went and you should re-read the books before you post here again you loser"

i've seen this in alot of other forums and its a major member-killer

He drew a deep breath. 'Well, I'm back,' he said.

Okay, now that it looks like I am coming back here regularly, figured I should probably introduce myself quickly in here, since I've been away for the better part of six months or so, so most of the newbies probably don't know me.

So, hello, I'm Rachel - mostly called Van or Vanima on here. I first started coming to the Barrow-Downs about three and a half years ago, when I was fourteen. I was involved in a lot of roleplaying and was a regular on the chat (not so much now). I'm just starting to try to get back into roleplaying in the White Horse Inn, and I'm starting to look in on the other boards.

Well, that's basically it.

Whichever - I've grown used to responding to both. People have called me Van, Vanima, VanimaEdhel, Vanny, Vani, VE, Rachel, Rache, Rach...RachelAyn (one of my screen names on a different board). If you just throw out some variety of my real name or my screen name, I'll notice you referring to me - I mean I change up what I call different people from time to time to, depends on how the moment strikes me.

Anyway, nice to meet you, Larien!

Welcome back...again Van...and i know i'm funny...

Just keep telling yourself you're hilarious and you'll be fine. ;)

And, you want to be a cowboy, huh (reading your signature)? Should start watching Deadwood on HBO. Great show.

Welcome indeed out_of_focus...does your avatr imply that you are canadian?

naw...I'm not canadian...I'm from Kansas (so no "Toto and Dorothy" jokes!) *glares at people in the room*, and the reason I picked that avatar was it was the only one I could find that would fit. If I find another one, I'm gonna change it...

Heya,
I'm Han (nah!) friend of Kath. This place seems cool but it's so weird to be a newbie on a site again! I hang out at 'roes generally (www.sheroescentral.com) so I think I understand these places!
I'm ever so slightly crazy and you might want to take this opportunity to run away screaming!
much love
Han X

You mean it doesn't? *blink* I am queen of the shoes..bow down...mwhahaha

I'm a bit crazy but if Kath fits in then hopefully so will I.

Kath- thanks for introducing me to Barrow-Downs! ( Do you call it anything shorter like BD or the downs?)

Hello, there. I'm Alcarillo, and I've been here for only a day or two. I've read The Hobbit, all of The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and I've done some skimming in the Histories of Middle Earth, so I guess that I'm pretty familiar with Tolkien's books.

I don't know where else to ask this question, except on this thread. It's not really a topic of its own, you might notice.

How does a chap set up his aviator? Some are really cool...but I can't figure out how to put one on. If there is no easy solution to explain on how to do it, don't try (it'll likely confuse me) and tell me to figure it out on my own. However, if there is an easy fix, say it and I'll be more than happy.

Kath

Ok Folwren this be what you do;

Go to User CP

On the left hand side of the screen there is a list that says Control Panel

Click on where it says Edit Avatar

Then you can upload an image from your computer by finding the box that gives you that option and clicking Browse.

Or if you know the address of the picture you want you can enter that into the box that gives you that option.

If the site refuses to let you upload a picture it is likely to be because it is too large, your picture can't be more than 64x64 pixels.

Folwren
07-06-2005, 11:23 AM
How can you change the size of the picture to make it small enough?

Kath
07-06-2005, 11:26 AM
That I truly don't know. I couldn't work it out when I did mine so I just chose a smaller picture.

If you have Adobe, find the Resize Image option and you can change it there. If not, you can copy and paste an image into Paint, and simply select it with the dotted-line-box-thingy (I know what I'm talking about, so I hope you do, or I'll have to go check out the real names) and resize it that way. then you shrink the canvas (there are little squares in the corners... go to the bottom right-most one and click and drag until it frames your picture. Save it as a GIF (what I usually do), and if it's small enough, it should work fine.

I too am looking for an avatar. I found a good-sized image on Google, but when I typed in the URL, I got a message saying that it wasn't valid or something like that. I also saved it to my computer and accessed it with the Browse button, but it still didn't work. Are there any specific avatar requirements besides the size/memory and the sort of file it must be? Can my computer not let me somehow? Is there anything I can do?

Kath

Are you absolutely sure it's not too big? Go by pixel size not kb or whatever it is.

Alcarillo
07-08-2005, 04:23 PM
It only is 49x49 pixels. Maybe there's something wrong with my computer.

like i said, it won't except some files...

My bet is that when I got the image I wanted as an avatar alone up on Google, its URL was www.url.com.gif, but the website it originally comes from, www.url.com, has more than one image. There's my problem, I think. The page it originally came from had more than one image. I'll try saving it to my computer again and getting it online that way.

Hi, I'm Kahnshefal, a Goblin. Just tried the name generator here and got some interesting results, but I actually got my name from a goblin name generator at http://www.jaqdhawkins.com/name.php

Looking forward to chatting to others with fantasy interests.

Welcome Kahnshefal! Thanks for the link, my name came out as Lakena.

And well done Alcarillo for finally getting your avvie to work, and what a pretty one it is too.

Oh, and if you guys ever really do have problems with that, you can always try Avatarity (http://www.avatarity.com/). They have all different kinds of graphics. Before I got in the habit of finding my own images online and changing the size to use them, I used Avatarity to find some. They have all sizes and categories.

I suppose that's my next task, to do an avatar. Do they have to be remotely linked or can they be directly uploaded?

Nice goblin names BTW. I've got the book that inspired it, great if you like fantasy. New take on goblins. :)

I've got a question: How does one go about typing vowels with diacritical marks, e.g. the e with the two dots above it, vowels with accent marks?

The Barrow-Downs FAQ (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=6010) thread gives you the codes you need for those special signs and also answers some other questions you might have as well. If you have questions that aren't answered there, you're welcome to send me or one of the other moderators a PM. Hope you enjoy yourself here!

And welcome back, Vanima!

Whew! *is out of breath* :)

Goblin eh? Those are nice.

My Name is kinda derived from a type of goblin. Cobalt = Kobold = also a color, a glass, a poison, a metal and a newer model chevy that reminds me of a Jetta, lol.

But enough about me!

Time to let a voice OUTSIDE my head speak.

Hello I'm new.
The classic opening line for a newcomer I guess...

I've read and loved the LOTR, on my first reading I devoured all the book including the hobbit in probably under a week. I havn't yet got around to reading Tolkiens other works and so I feel slighty overwhelmed by the amount of informtion all you people have! But I like learning and I'm looking forward to learning and discusing the Tolkien charecters. I just hope you can put up with me making silly mistakes and saying stupid things for a while..

But hey! How you all doing?
