Hello, hello! *discovers that I cannot pull off creepy with my two-year-old voice* Welcome to the Downs, Koga and Joseph! So lovely to have two such non-spamming new folk here! I'm sure you'll fit right in with us Wights. :)

Koga, if you like talking a lot, per'aps you should try a werewolf game. We never shut up there. ;)

Now, now Lottie, no reason to be scaring off the newly dead with our Werewolf antics...although I do agree about the non-shutting up bit! :p

And I would also like to extend my hand in welcome (well, my virtual hand that is!! :D ) to our two newest members!!

Galadriel
01-26-2010, 04:35 AM
Well, I shall call myself Galadriel on this site, after my favourite character :)

"I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel"

Sadly, I have no friends who are fans of Lord of the Rings. One's a hardcore HP fan, and another couple are Twilight lovers (curse that disgrace of a book!).

Well met, Galadriel! You certainly have chosen a noble subject for your eponym.
I'll second one of your friends in liking the HP books, but the Twilight phenomenon is quite beyond my understanding. I think you'll find more than enough Tolkien fans here though.
Enjoy your stay!

Hi again everyone. Thanks loslote, pitchwife and Inziladum and hope you enjoy the site welcome koga and Galadriel.
As for Twilight I don't think its that good as well. I`m not saying its a bad book but not as good as all the hype makes out.
I think the last book that was worth the hype is Mortal Engines. Its a great story about moving cities set in the far future in fact it is four books.
I also think that while Harry Potter is a clever set of books its morals are somewhat different to lord or the rings and evil is not as well defined.
sorry if this offends people its just my views.

Thank you all for the warm welcome, it's nice to see a forum site where people aren't immediately ragging on newcomers. As for the Werewolf games, I'm already being pestered into joining one of my friends games, so give it enough time and I'll probably make my way over there too. Anyway, thanks again to everyone, now I shall head out into the downs and see what this afterlife holds for me.

P.S. I don't even want to get started on a rant about Twilight, so I wont, but welcome Galadriel nonetheless.

That's the marker for your Reputation status. Read more about it here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=10503).
The captions, such as 'X has just left Hobbiton' have changed since the Reputation system was first introduced, so don't let that confuse you.

Hi everyone!

For starters, I'm a teenager, homeschooled, and a BIG literature and history buff. (Historical literature is even better) :p
Ceveneth means Earth in Sindarin, which is close to what my RL name means. And I liked how it sounded.
I'm a Tolkien fan, (like you didn't know that :p) and I've read all of LOTR, The Hobbit, and the Silmarillion, and I've seen the LOTR movies, and I want to learn Elvish eventually.
I think that's all. :D

Inziladun

Welcome, Ceveneth!

A history buff, hmm? Ever read anything by Barbara Tuchman?
And more power to you if you intend to learn Elvish to the point of speaking and writing it. ;)
I look forward to seeing you around.

Marroc Underhill
03-12-2010, 11:44 AM
It took me awhile to work up the nerve to make a new post; I wondered whether Marroc Underhill deserved to be woken from his 6 year slumber. In the end, I felt he'd slept long enough.

It's been awhile since I ventured onto the Downs. But, nostalgia struck me, and I couldn't resist checking out the site I was crazy about back in 2003. I couldn't even remember my username; I had to reactivate a few of my old email addresses and had to go on a great hunt, with only the knowledge that I posted in a thread about eagles back in 2003 as the only clue to finding my old identity. In the end, it all worked out, and Marroc is awake.

I know, I know: big opener for someone who only made 58 posts almost 7 years ago. But, it's very nice to see that this forum is still inhabited by incredibly intelligent users; that's one thing I always associated with the Downs, and, looking back, I feel embarrassed by my old posts, with their nonsense and poor grammar and such. I was 14 though.

On with my real introduction. My name is Eric.

Like many in my generation, I watched the movies before I read the books, but, like many, I quickly became enchanted by Tolkien's world and immersed myself in his stories. This was probably 2002. During the lonely summer of 2003, I stumbled upon the Barrow-Downs, and for months it was my favorite site. After exhausting the main site, I ventured into the forums. I was probably overwhelmed by the vast knowledge of the users, and the incredible discussions here were wowing and mind-boggling to say the least. But, I read, and read, and read. Every now and then I would post, enthusiastic about the community, but still lowly feeling - But I didn't care. It was great.

Over the next few months I lingered, but as I felt I had nothing to contribute to the community, I slowly drifted away. For the longest time, I had forgotten about the Downs (but most definitely not LotR). It was only the chance, stumbling mention (by me, strangely) that piqued my interest once again. As detailed above, driven by nostalgia and memories of this and other (long-dead) communities, I went on my little mission, and after some ghostly lingering, here I am.

I cannot tell you how great it is to see that the forum is still up and running - and hardly changed at all layout-wise. That's the most exciting part for me; if it weren't for the time-stamps, I could swear it was 2003 all over again. The icons are still awesome looking; that familiar green theme is great; even the randomized quotes at the top are still there! Even my dusty old posts are still lying about. This is great, to say the least.

From the oldest, dustiest bones lying around, to the newly interred, I thank you all for keeping this community alive after all these years. It may be hard for some people to understand, but these forums hold a lot of great memories for me.

Thank you.

Re-risen,
Marroc Underhill

Welcome back, Marroc!

As I recall, I wasn't all that active here myself during 2003, so I unfortunately don't remember you.
You're right though, in that as far as intelligent discussion and general fun are concerned, the old place is the same as ever.
Here's to your comeback!

Once a Downer, forever a Downer...
Hi Marroc! I think your previous period of activity must have been around the time I first came to the Downs as an occasional silent lurker (with no regular internet access at the time, it took me years to register), and although I can't remember whether or not I noticed you back then, it's always a pleasure to see one of the shades who haunted this place before me returning from the Halls of Mandos. So welcome back, and well met!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

This forum is most definitely a must-visit for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of Tolkien's work, and is a veritable treasure trove of knowledge, with pages and pages of article-quality posts written by the obviously talented writers who have come, gone, or stayed over the last 10 years.

I'm definitely going to enjoy my second stay on the Downs!

H,

I'm new on this forum so will just say hi.

I'm using the name Shadowfax as I had that name on different others forums in the past and this establishes some continuity.

Is there anybody here who remembers me from the White Council? Must be 10 years ago about. maybe we can re-hash some of our conversations from back then

I've grown a bit older since then, but not any wiser.

About myself, as you can gather from my signature, I'm involved with the Walking Tree publishers. This is a volunteer run publisher. We do it all in our free time and for free. You can visit our webiste here : http://www.walking-tree.org

Using this opportunity, I'd ike to divert your attention to our lastest book, Beowulf and The Dragon http://www.walking-tree.org/books/beowulf_and_the_dragon.php illustarted by Anke Eissmann and printed as a high quality art book. We're very proud of having done this.

A bit more about myself. i've penned various hsort bits of fan lit over the yaers but haven't had much time recently. You can check out some of my work here: http://www.proaktiva.ch/shadowfax/tolkien/aglared/. Some of it is better than other bits, and I'd like one day to do some more ...

My favourite so far is my poem, Elven Passing http://www.proaktiva.ch/shadowfax/tolkien/aglared/ElvenPassing.html.

Okay, that's my introduction for a start. I'm sure 've missed a lot of important stuff and can add that later.

05-13-2010, 03:55 PM
Hello there! My screen name, Lastande Took, is a combination of my name in Quenya (hope that website was right :) ) and one of my favourite Hobbit family names. I read LotR for the first time a couple months ago, got through the trilogy and The Hobbit in a week, and have not seen the movies. Ummm...I'm a total horse nut, I'm also a Sherlock Holmes, Star Wars, and Isaac Asimov fan. My name on Fanfiction.net is Karm Starkiller, and I've written two Star Wars fanfics, one of which is still in progress, a Holmes/War of the Worlds crossover that I'm going very slowly on, and a Holmes/LotR crossover parody.

My favourite LotR characters are, in no particular order; Samwise Gamgee, Pippin Took, Shadowfax and all other horses, Eowyn - she's totally awesome, all the other Hobbits, Faramir, and Gandalf - who has some very Sherlock Holmesian overtones, if you ask me.

Greetings! I am (as you can see) Finrod Felagund. :D I discovered Barrow-Downs because of my sister, Lindale, keeps posting in here while I am watching her to annoy her.

I have already read The Hobbit and The Silmarillion and I am still reading The Unfinished Tales. I chose the name Finrod Felagund because I love the part where Finrod and Sauron fought by exchanging songs of power.

So, hello everybody! Live long and prosper! :smokin:

Greetings, everyone. I'm Matthieu Bronsky, a 25-years-old college student from Germany and a huge nerd about everything Tolkien-related.

I discovered the Downs fairly recently, and since I'm mainly interested in discussing the more obscure subjects concerning Middle-Earth, I immediately fell in love with this forum. After I had browsed the Archives thoroughly, I deemed best to register. Well, and here I am. :D

Wow, another fellow German? And sporting an Allen Ginsberg signature? That's an interesting range of literary tastes!

Well, in my opinion Ginsberg and Tolkien have more in common than one might think (in their message - obviously not in their writing style); hence this specific quotation in my signature.

Nor in their lifestyle:D; but yes, I guess you're right. The Prof would probably have deplored some parts of Ginsberg's vocabulary as 'Orc-speech', but I'm pretty sure Ginsberg's poetic attacks on The Moloch would have found his approval.

Well hello all.

I'm Ohtariel. I'm currently in the market for a new place to RP and new people to RP with, so hopefully I won't have to look any further. It has been a long search. One I would be glad to end.

I'm 20 years old now, but have been rpg since I was 12 or 13... can't remember now. I'd like to think my writing has improved since then, but I'm never quite satisfied with my posts so I'll let you guys be the judge of that. Not that you have any of my writing from when I first started... thank good ness. No comparisons!

And thats enough of that.

Your RPG rules look rather complex but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. Just gotta sit down with some coffee. Anywho! Looking forward to meeting you all.

Welcome! A shield maiden I presume!!

RPG is a bit quiet at the moment (must knuckle down to a post today) but I for one would love it to be more lively. Usually you start at the Golden Perch ... but that was stymied by an anachronistic post.. maybe if there are a few people interested we could ask for an advancement in time to give a break from the old plot lines and make a fairly fresh start? Otherwise you could go to the Meadhall but I don't know what is going on there ..

Remember someone by the name of Babidi Buu? The one that always obsessed over Gothmog the Orc from Return of the King?

She's back.. :D Not a new member, but i decided to make a post here because i have not been on here in a long time.

Thing's have gotten very busy in real and i haven't really had much time to come on here(That and the previous hard drive went bye-bye so i have to do everything from scratch). Well, i finally got the chance and decided to come back.

She has also come back with some roleplaying skills(Been roleplaying as the "Forgotten One" of Disney Characters: The Horned King. You wouldn't know him unless you've seen "The Black Cauldron". NOT a populer Disney movie). Still a bit rusty, but she's getting the hang of it. Would like to try my hand at roleplaying Gothmog, so if you know of the right place for me to go, let me know.. :p

But that is not why i came back. I don't really know much about which characters are safe to RP as so im not sure if it is alright to RP as Gothy. But I came back because i really missed this place and was hoping to get the chance to come back.

Heya! Babidi Buu has returned.. And she still has the same Gothy-Avy. Scary, isn't it? :p

Not exactly new here (I've been hanging around for YEARS) but more like returning after an extended absence from the Tolkien study (you can thank dual English/History degrees for that, but I don't regret it for a moment) and for exceptionally declining vision (worrisome for someone of my young age). Thankfully, a large portion of the more important books of Tolkien's creation are now available as eBooks so I can enlarge the font for easier reading (and not carry around such heavy tomes!).

So enough with my rambling! I'm ready to get back into some discussions!

But what of the lack of professional-grade blenders, featuring state-of-the art stainless steel blades and backed by fast, friendly and competent customer service? MordorMix™ is, IMHO, a very inferior brand, and when I tried calling 1-800-PALANTIR for support the person on the other end seemed to have no idea what I was talking about, kept asking me to pass on a message to someone named "Saruman", laughed horribly at me and hung up. I certainly won't be buying from that firm again in a hurry, I can tell you!

Hello everyone,

Technically I am not NEW new I am sort of OLD new. I was here several ages ago (about 4-5 years) under a different name. Its been a very long time, but I kind of started missing this place.

I come now under a new name because looking back I was rather whiny and self-serving. I am older and wiser now.....well at least older.

Anyway, Dilettante is the name, you can shorten that however you like. (It should have been Intergalactic Dilettante, but that wouldn't fit in the box). Middle-Earth is by no means new to me, and I love it as much now as the day I discovered it.

Me? I... er... um... Who's Tolkien? Oh, yeah, that genius guy. I get him and Einstein confused. Has there ever BEEN a man so magic in all the universe?!?!?!?!??

But is this about him, or me? Me, I graduated as 100% Saruman on that quizzy test thingy. 3% separated me from the Nobility of Aragorn at a close 97%. So yeah, I've delved so deep into the Arts of my enemy that I am ever on the verge of ruinous conversion, even if my intentions were always to do good.

But is this a reflection of the REAL me? You bet your honey buttered sesame cakes it is. Who of you is intuitive? Tell me if this is true or untrue and I will give you a cake of Lembas bread. :p

Mae Govannen, mellonar!
(Okay, bad attempt at saying "Well met, friends" in Elvish.

I am a big-time Tolkien Fan! I started reading The Hobbit in 6th grade and read the Lord of the Rings in Junior High. I was immediately absorbed into the depth and legend of the books and HAD to read the Silmarilion.
A WHOLE NEW WORLD EXPLODED BEFORE ME! The Creation of Arda, the Exile of the Noldor, the Fate of Men, the Treachery of Melkor, the Charn i Hin Hurin, and the Akellebeth sucked me into their adventure and history. I am still hooked on Tolkien and do not believe I shall ever grow tired of it.
After reading the actual books I read biographies on Tolkien and actually started to read the Lost Roads; but the old versions started to ruin my belief in Middle-earth and I abandoned the Road. However, I have recently obtained The Unfinished Tales and Robert Foster's Complete Guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth- both books I highly recomend (Unfinished Tales mostly for the complete story of Tuor's Coming to Gondolin and the lost Race of Tolkien's Drugs [pronounced "Droog;" I can't put the accent mark over the U]).:)
One of the things I like to do is translate peoples names into Elvish. If someone finds out what their name means, I can translate it for them (modifying the meaning a little- my real name means "The LORD remembers" so I made my name mean "Remembrance of Eru ").
So, yeah, that is me!
*Erurin is my made up Elf that is Noldorin and is a survivor of the Fall of Gondolin and lives in Lothlorien- just in case anyone wonders (which they most likely don't):)

You're not alone there. I don't think there is such a thing as 'actual elvish speech' - meaning that Tolkien's Elven languages weren't designed to be used in an actual conversation (unless you're content to talk mainly about stars and trees). Even the Prof himself achieved only a number of (still quite remarkable) poems and snippets of dialogue - when he tried to translate the Pater noster into Quenya he changed his mind about the words and constructions every time he copied it.

Anyway, have you been to Ardalambion (http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/)? Helge Fauskanger has a whole Quenya course there, and IMHO he's quite good at explaining grammar without assuming that the reader knows a lot of linguistic terms to start with.

Long time Tolkien fan from the time my teacher read The Hobbit to us at primary school. Graduated to LotR, UT and The Silmarillion eventually - currently re-reading that alongside the relevent parts of HoMe with Arda Reconstructed as my quick-reference guide, and gaining a new appreciation for Tolkien's masterpiece. Looking forward to checking out the "New Silmarillion" project threads. Loved the movies for what they got right, (gritted teeth over the worst trespasses) and pretty excited to see if they can get The Hobbit right this time!

Particularly interested in musical depictions of M-e, and also Tolkien artwork, and book illustration in general.

Hope you'll forgive any faux pas I might inadvertantly make as I get used to the way of doing things on this site.:)

Don't worry, most of us do incredibly stupid things (such as gawking at a Tolkien site instead of concentrating on our work/homework).

Too true, lol! Like what I'm doing now! :D

New to this forum. Read the LOTR aloud one winter back in 1974, when we had not much to do, and were snowed in for a few weeks.
It gave us a deeper feeling for the characters, and for the Author himself.

I can't say that I'm Silcentered, but I know The Sil much better than LOTR... probably because it's shorter...

Like Pitch said, your avatar is stunning! :D

You reminded me how my friend, who I goaded into making an account here, disappeared after one post. It's a shame I haven't seen him since then, but he should be prepared for a gale the next time we meet... So, my point: please don't disappear!

Hello, this forum was recommended to me by a member on another forum I am on. It's always great to meet a large Tolkien fan-base, and I hope to frequent these forums often. I have always been a Tolkien fan, and recently I have joined in a project to build Middle-Earth with another large group of Tolkien fans (the other forum group) on the game of Minecraft. We are well versed in the lore and geography and would like to contribute to this forum with anything you do not know (although from the looks of this forum, I think it may be the other way round!)

Greetings! I'm back, but I'll introduce myself properly, as I doubt many remember me:

Hi, I'm Finduilas, called Findy (when I'm too lazy to type the full name). I've been a Tolkien fan since a young age when my older brother read The Hobbit out-loud to our family. At age 10 I read The Lord of the Rings for the first time, and I've read it 7 times since (I have a habit of rereading books I like).

I joined the Downs several years ago, and left as life got busy. Life has gotten busier, but I think I can handle it better. I was encouraged to join back up for the purpose of RPGing, but I'm sure I'll interact in other places.

Hi. I'd like to be called Willow and I identify mostly with the Hobbits. We Hoosiers are a lot like them.

I am a member of the Mythopoeic Society. I have become someone who is fascinated by the scholarly critiques of Tolkien while remaining someone who deeply appreciates the stories written by Tolkien.

I'm hoping to find people at this site with whom I can share my appreciation of Tolkien's legendarium.

Hello. I poked around this site around 2003 when the fervor for the LotR movies was climaxing, eventually going on to make use of every feature on the site. I found it very enjoyable.

I arbitrarily thought of this site at work yesterday and decided to check it out. I was sad to see that there haven't been any updates since 2004 but alternately excited to see the forums relatively alive.

I guess personal excitement and anticipation for the Hobbit movie releases over the next couple years is what brought this site to mind.

Hey Anaarkhal!

Nearly similar situation for me as well.
The Hobbit movies got my Tolkien internet interest back up enough to start posting again as well.

I had forgotten about this site until doing a Tolkien discussion board search and found few results other than theonering and I'm not interested in posting there--too many spoilers. Then I saw Barrow-downs and thought... I remember that site. Kind of. When I got here a little more came back to memory.

Yeah, 10 years ago there was a plethora of sites.
I posted to a lot of them too.
Now, just a few remain.
As I recall, this site was one of the better ones even then.

So welcome. Belated (re)intro for myself as well at the same time.

Hello everyone!

Having archive-binged nearly the whole of the books section on this forum, I have decided to join this site. I think it's arguably the best of Tolkien forums, dead or alive (or undead) and it seems from all you lot say that there are precious few of those on the net anymore! I wish I could have experienced and engaged in this fandom at its apex - browsing all the old stuff does bring a certain measure of regret - but I am definitely too young to have done any of that.

I am in secondary school, only going into Year 9 in September. I live in bright, sunny England, in the gorgeous little city of Oxford. I first read The Hobbit and LOTR nearly three years ago when I was eleven. Since then the Appendices have fallen out of my copy of Return of the King (my sister has now bound them separately :D), I have read The Silm and UT, and would have liked to have devoured HoMe too, if I could afford them, what with their eye-watering £120 price tag. I've recently bagged The Book of Lost Tales Part 1, though.

My interests and hobbies include writing and drawing/painting (not that I'm all that good at either :)), quizzing, films, languages, spending time with my friends and, of course, analysis and discussion of Tolkien's work (though I'm definitely not keen on anything too scholarly, rigid and absolute.) I love to fill in the gaps as well as see others' interpretation of things. After all, I think its the applicability (and often even ambiguity) of JRRT's work that makes it what is.

That's enough from me now. :)

Galadriel55

Yay! I'm finally not the youngest one around! :D (I'm going into Grade 10, or, as you people across the pond say it, Year 10) Well, at least, if you stay here...

Erm, um, uhhh... right.

Welcome, Narnangol! This is definitely the best Tolkien-related (and non-Tolkien-related too) forum that I've seen on the web. I think you'll find many things here that will interest you on top of the Books discussions.

Narnangol

Well, Galadriel55, the year-grade thing translates differently, as Year 1 here begins with the kids a little younger than Grade 1 does. If you were across the pond, then you'd now be going into Year 11, not 10. So even better for you. :D

Oh...my mistake... I didn't know that. But that means I'd have one year less of school! :D Unless you have 13 Years. But if I was in Russia, I'd only need 9 years/grades for colledge and 11 for Uni.

Why am I even saying all that? :p

Mithalwen
08-08-2011, 02:41 AM
We do have 13 years- effectively 14 since although it isn't compulsory most children go into a "Reception" class at 4. And the not quite compulsory last two year are often still referred to as "Sixth form" at least by relative oldies like me...

Anyway lovely to have another Brit especially from Oxford - heart of Tolkiendom on earth?

Narnangol
08-08-2011, 09:49 AM
Mithalwen, everyone I know refers to Years 12 and 13 as Sixth Form still. :)

As for Oxford, I should definitely like to think it's the heart of Tolkiendom on earth! It's lovely to come across places I know Tolkien has been, and even lived: whenever my dad drives me into town, he drops me off on Merton Street! Acknowledging all this makes me giddy. :D

Mithalwen
08-08-2011, 10:33 AM
I must admit I lived in Oxford for a year and did nothing Tolkieny - I had ground to a halt with HoME before the more approachable History of LOTR volumes emerged and I did a lit degree which meant that I had plenty of other things to read. I am not overly fond of the films but they did get me into Tolkien again. But I have been to the grave and his favourite tree and I did go and have a look at his house in Bournemouth (now demolished).

Hey Zickerr, welcome!

The music... well there is a lot of it made by some famous composers, some theatre-companies, musically (at)tuned Tolkien lovers and the basic Barrow-Downers (not to talk of people on other web-sites - even if they can't beat us...).

I think you have some pretty intresting threads here to the music of the Arda / music of the Middle Earth as we have a few professionals abroad and quite a many afficionados as well to make it interesting and educating at the same time.

So just delve into the threads and when you don't find what you seek, open a new one for your specific questions / ideas.

You're all right, there are many composers and albums inspired by Tolkien, and I've bought some of them. Many are very good and many others are not. :p

At this moment, I'm interested (but not only) in that music made before the movies. Not because I think that only pre-movie music are good, but it's just a way to made some selection, and because I think that the movie inspired a lot of opportunist composers and bands (not all of them, of course – the Tolkien Ensemble work is really amazing, and the soundtrack of LotR too).

These days, I'm enjoying with Donald Swann, Hobbitons and Bo Hansson and I'm looking for "songs of middle earth" by James Satark, that I can't find even after months of search (can we talk about .mp3 files here?). If you had a clue, tell me.

And, please, Galadriel55, send me link to Downers' compositions, I'm very interested. Thanks again, and sorry about my english. :D

Whoops, forgot to post here before I made my first thread. Almiel here, and a very very long time ago, I was a Barrow-Downs lurker. When looking for some translation help, I found it again. I did not become a fan until after FotR came out (I was very nearly dragged there by my dad), but as soon as I saw it, I devoured the books and have read them several times since. I've been working on purchasing more Middle-Earth books - reading them is another story. I'm currently working my way through The Silmarillion (I have started it about a thousand times, but this time I'm actually going to finish it).

Hi, zickerr, and welcome! I'm one of the Downers who's very interested in Tolkien-related music and has done some research on the use of music in the books as well as listening to compositions inspired by JRRT's works.

I just recently started a thread introducing the LotR Symphony by Johan de Meij, which was composed in the 80s, well before the movies were made. It's wonderful music! More information and a link here (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=17534).

Several Downers have written on the topic, and we have a sub-forum dedicated to the book Music in Middle-earth here (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44).

I'll post more for you when I have time to look deeper into the forum...

I know there are a lot of places he visited throughout the world, but I hear tell 'spirits' visited him and left a few whispers in his ear. Hello, ladies and gentlemen!

My first decade with Tolkien is almost over. That is, however, not my reason of joining here. I've got way more selfish reasons, which I'm not going to share with you yet, though some of you (krhm, Greenie) might already know something about them.

Throughout my life I've been lucky enough to have someone with whom to talk about Tolkien's work so I haven't needed an online community for that. Not enough to search for one anyway. But I'm glad I'm here now. And hence this is an introduction topic - hello everyone, I'm Pom (or Nate, whichever you prefer), I live in Edinburgh, Scotland at the moment, study language sciences along with other stuff, sing and dance and play and read and act merrily. Lovely to meet all of you.

Hello there! I wonder if there would be an objection to a revival of some of the old threads? I posted here briefly two or three years ago, although at the time I was slightly "Tolkiened out," having been very active in Tolkien discussion online during the anticipatory period leading up to the films. (On other sites, admittedly, but that's because, as has been noted before, there were so many). But I have been reading some truly excellent discussions on this site, many of which began ten years ago.

Whoops - think I've just found the answer:

Hi guys! I wonder if anyone could tell me why my signature won't work? The box is ticked, and I edited it so that it was under 3 lines long. Is it a privilege granted by the mods only after a certain time, or is it just not working due to a glitch? Couldn't find a forum about technical board matters, so posting it here. :)

EDIT: Ah! It's in this post, so appears to be working. It isn't in my old posts, though. Do signatures only show in posts made from the day one sets them, then?

No, the signature is supposed to appear under all your posts, unless you unchecked the box to show your signature before you made the post (or went to the advanced edit where you can also do it).

Ah yes! Done. :)

Just wanted to say what a lovely site I think this is. The Barrow-Downs is a haunting and "less obvious" choice of name for a Tolkien discussion-site, and it's fascinating to think of that part of the book, which tends to (understandably) get left out of dramatisations, and wryly amusing to have statuses like "Ghost Prince of Cardolan" or "Pile O'Bones." Reminds me of all the intricate details and unknowns of Tolkien's world. And great to read the thoughts of a wonderfully "bookish" bunch of posters, too.

And yet again I show up promising posts... I hope to do this. I want to write a paper on how archaeology would work in Middle Earth. I don't know where to start or if I should post up a thread. What do you all think? And where should I post a discussion about this?

Hi! Wow! I joined almost 10 years ago.

Welcome back Annalaliath!

I think you should start a thread about it in the Novices section. I shall try to give some suggestions, and others will too. :)

I've joined within the last hour, and I'm very happy to be here. Do people here just jump in to a thread that looks fun or should I wait to be invited?

Thanks from Mrs. Boffin

You are very welcome here, Mrs. Boffin, and you can just jump into any discussion you like, or if you don't find one about a subject that interests you, go ahead and start a new thread!

As a mod, I haven't referred to our FAQ (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=6010), Guideline (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=11805), and Forum Policy (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=5993)threads in awhile, so I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone to read them. However, no one is hard on newcomers here, so even if you make an honest mistake, don't feel bad. Just refrain from spamming, flaming or off-topic posting, and you'll be just fine.

Thank you for the welcome! I forgot to ask if I can bring my margarita in with me. ;) (I am quite sure Gandalf must have been able to conjure a blender with that staff of his.)

Hi, I'm obviously new here. I am a big LOTR fan (books especially, but also movies), and look forward to talking about it with you guys!

Hi... I'm MCRmyGirl4eva.. and I've loved the movies for ages. However, I only had Fellowship and ROTK. So I read The Two Towers to catch up last year, since there was stuff in ROTK I didn't get. After that, I read Fellowship and Return of the King, and I saw how much had been left out. I still love the movies, and I have TTT movie now, but the books are better :)

At last, I found the magic key, or rubbed the magic lamp thrice or spoken the elvish word for friend.

I'm back in, again. Locked myself out for years (7 if memory serves, an auspicious number) having reset my password to a random string of alphanumeric characters and changed email addresses in the intervening period.

Time will tell if I get back into RPing. My hands are full co-writing a fourth age piece with my husband and my real life paying job. So, it may be some time before I daintily dip my toes in that murky RP pond again.

Doesn't appear that much has changed on the Barrows. Comforting, that, in a way. Like my small, rural, home town. No matter how long you're away, the place looks largely the same when you get back. This is a good thing. I know this.

Hey, I'm Danny. I'm 14. I found this forum a while ago, and decided to get an account yesterday. Mainly because I'm tired of having no one to talk to about LOTR. It's sad. I think I'm starting to annoy my friends (I made them all watch the movies and am working on getting them to read the books). So yeah. Hi.
