Welcome back, ruts! I know what it feels like to have been away a long time....I myself have only recently come back to 'Downage. Again, may I be the first to offer you a very hearty welcome back!

Moksha
01-20-2006, 05:59 PM
Well, it has been far too long, and my old name expired.

So, I'm Moksha, the reincarnation of Saraphim.

Life came up and abruptly smacked me 'round with a flaming trout, and rendered it difficult for me to spend any quality time here. But, I missed the ol' Downs terribly...and now here I am...

So, hi, everyone!

Hi, Everyone! I'm Suncrafter.

I came across this forum while doing research for my website about Orcs.

Yesterday I had posted a thread about "45 Things that Orcs never say." But it was removed as spam. Evidently it is OK to post links in your signature at the bottom but not OK to post links in the body of the post. That's what I get for not reading the rules. I'll try re-posting "45 Things that Orcs never say" when I find time.

With some five or six days "seniority" over you ;) , I must say, this is a most welcoming community.

...and addictive.

Try to hold your horses, or you'll lose your life outside the computer & your mind - or at least you may start neglecting your duties, as has happened to me... at least for the time being.

Have fun!

Hello, I'm JennyHallu, or just Jenny, or Hallu, or the Mass Hallucination (but that's really more of a title than a name.) I am a long-time Tolkien fan, but I admit I may be a little rusty. Doesn't help that I'm recently married (yay!) and moved away from home and my only copy of the trilogy is technically my parents' (boo!)

Come on Glirdan! Do you really want to be hauntet by a pile o bones? Is it not a bit silly?

Your welcome to haunt me when you have become a wight Jenny. (Wich you will become rather fast if you spend some time in the Quiz Room! ;) )

Glirdan

JennyHallu
02-01-2006, 07:03 AM
Bones make neat music...*tunes ribs* Look! I'm a Glockenspiel! (sp?)

Since skellingtons (gee, it's been too long since I read that book...long enough I can't remember which one it is...David Copperfield maybe?) make Rune nervous, I will cheerfully haunt Glirdan until I can muster up a more compelling phantasm.

JennyHallu

Hi Manwe! I'm in the same boat...we are welcome (in my understanding) to post in the Green Dragon or in the Mead Hall, but other than that we, like anyone else, must wait to be invited into a game, and must play a game in the Shire to completion before receiving an invitation to play in Rohan. I believe there is a game in the works in the Shire, likely to be a parody-game rather than one in a serious style, but the company in the Inn is very fine. PM piosennial in order to place your name on the master player's list so GMs know to consider you for a game.

Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing you in the Dragon!

Hello, I am Will, and I found this site from a link (name generator) posted on GameFAQs.

I am an avid LOTR fan, and sometimes find myself reading hundreds of Wikipedia articles pertaining to family lineage of Middle-Earth inhabitants.

My name "translates" to Enedhil (username was taken) so I settled for Enedhilion.

I am currently waiting to play Battle for Middle-Earth II.

Enedhilion, welcome! i too am waiting for BFME II to coem out, it looks like an awesome game

Caunwaithon
02-11-2006, 02:57 AM
Well, I'm Caunwaithon.

If anyone wants to know, it means "Leader of the People" in elvish. Found it on a name generator.

I was introduced to this site by Enedhil, my friend. We go to school together, and all that.

I was first introduced to J.R.R. Tolkien when I read the hobbit, quite a few years ago. I liked it, but forgot about it. The movies really brought out the LOTR fan in me. I am now addicted to it, and I have just bought The Simrallion (correct me if the spelling is wrong) and I have just gotten to the demise of melkor, and the march of the elves.

I, too am an avid BFME fan, and am getting BFME 2 for the xbox 360. My computer, sadly, is not up to snuff for that kind of thing.

I write "short stories" for my english teacher for extra credit, and for my own enjoyment. Some are sci-fi, some modern, none fantasy, but I have written 2 LOTR.

I have written my "intro" in the Green Dragon inn, and am currently in a discussion with Elendhil.

My RP'ing expierience boils down to this-

1 LOTR rp'ing site
7 Star wars.

Although I have never seen one...quite like this, lol.

So...yeah.

P.S.- If there are any SWs fans, go to this RPing site-

http://sw-rev.net/forums/index.php?referid=125

I am Kerrson Mantau there.

Just as you mention your wish to correct you, I'll take the liberty of doing so. So it's Silmarillion, not Simrallion. Tolkien indeed got the idea for this name from the finnish mythology, where the mythological smith is called "Ilmarinen". You propably can taste the similarity.

So: Silmarillion - Ilmarinen (and don't pronounce it the basic american way, but try the original pronouncement, and you see, they fit like a hand to a glove)

I think, that kind of shows the way Tolkien worked, finding suitable syllables from here and there, and then knitting them together in his own, quite systematic work. What a guy!

But really. Welcome Caunwaithon, and Enedhilion, and Janthor too!

You seem to have quite an action going on at the the Green Dragon. Have fun, but get to know other folks also! There is quite a mob out there: so read some earlier posts and just intervene with anyone. You'll see, it becomes much more interesting with people who are total strangers to you... :D

I'm very delighted that someone does a "proper" introduction of himself. (But that is purely of selfish reasons; I don't feel so much fool for my overlong introduction about myself over a year ago... )

Anyway, welcome Caunwaithon, I hope you'll enjoy the 'Downs!

Welcome, welcome, welcome all around. Enjoy your deaths! May maggots never invade your barrow! May the light of day never burn your eyes! May ghosts, ghoulies, and things that go BUMP in the night (that would include me, but mostly because I'm klutzy) be your ever-constant friends!!

Hello! I'm new to the site, but have been a fan of Tolkien for a few years. The books of his are certainly some of the best literature I have ever read. I'll probably check out the RPing forums most of the time, but in general I like everything to do with LOTR, so I'll pop up just about everywhere. Hope to be around for quite some time to come...

With your signature, you should check the "culinary traditions..." -thread! :D

But anyhow. Welcome to the BD-community!

You will be most warmly welcomed. We all have been (see my joining date...). So speaking with no authority at all, get yourself involved! So as you say, being all-around, is a good tactics! Go to the Green Dragon, see for the starting Werewolf-games, or join the discussion about PJ's films vs. the original story, sequence by sequence, or about the details of Tolkien's ideas about shaping the destiny of the "lost dwarwes" in Silmarillion, or all of them. Here, there is everything for everyone.

Have fun!

Hello all. I'm new to these boards but have posted on the GDI, CoE, MT, TPTS (you name it). Was very intrigued by the number of recent posts on these boards which indicated an active membership. I translated my name myself: parma=book, asta=month, hir=root for "to find". Literally, "book of months finder". In essence, "calendar collector". My Tolkien passion is the Tolkien calendars. I have catalogued my collection at:

www.angelfire.com/tn3/tolkiencalendars

Would appreciate comments and messages from you if you know of or have any calendars that I have not found (yet!) I love the interpretations of the many illustrators out there - from the very well-known (Howe and Nasmith) to the obscure (Korablev) to the "Who knew?" (for example, Alex Lewis!) Hope you enjoy it!

Welcome, Parmastahir! It's good to have a member adding a new aspect of Tolkienism to the site! We have discussed collector's items in the past on this thread: The Collection Grows (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=5489), so if you wade through or skim over those 21 pages, there is sure to be mention of some calendar or other.

I took a brief peek at your site, and though you say you don't collect movie-related calendars, I would like to mention that, as far as I know, a movie bookmark calendar (see it here (http://elbenwaldshop.de/sess/utn;jsessionid=1543f6d94e2fac3/shopdata/0030_Poster/0070_Kalender+und+Collections/product_details.shopscript?article=0040_Lesezeiche n%2Bund%2BKalender%2BHerr%2Bder%2BRinge%2B2006%2B% 3D28E12320%3D29)) is Germany's unique contribution to the topic. Aside from the German Tolkien Society's calendar (which has an illustration by Anke Eissmann, a wonderful young artist whom I met in Birmingham last summer), which you have on your list, I am not aware of any others that are available only in Germany. I wish Anke Eissmann, whose Tolkien and related artwork can be seen on her website (http://anke.edoras-art.de/anke_home.html), would do a whole calendar. Her paintings are fantastic - I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

Parmastahir
02-18-2006, 08:59 AM
Hi Estelyn -

While I don't collect the movie-related calendars (with a very few exceptions), I am aware of A BUNCH of them. Re any calendars from Germany, you can do an advanced search ebay using the keywords "Herr der Ringe kalender" or "Tolkien kalender" and searching either Germany (specifically) or Worldwide (generally). You will certainly find many LotR movie calendars (or kalenders!) there. They may, as you note, not be particularly unique but simply German editions of the 'standard' New Line calendars.

Thanks for the comments and your welcome. I have met any number of fellow collectors on other boards and look forward to doing the same here. I had seen The Collection Grows thread and skimmed through it. I will take a longer look and post a reply there, also.

Away from the Green Hill Country,

Parmastahir

Hey! I'm new to the forum world, but I'm a fast learner. I'm not very good at naming things, so this one is a rip off from a Terry Pratchett book. Call me Sally. It's easier to remember (and spell).

Fantasy is my life. Apart from Tolkien, some other favorites include Terry Pratchett, Tamora Pierce, Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, Orson Scott Card (although he's more sci-fi than fantasy)......the list goes on, but I'll spare you and my ability to remember names. Lets just say it's a long list.

Home is Wexford, PA, but I'm currently living in Giessen, Germany (a smaller city north of Frankfurt). I'm here with the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program through AFS, and so far it's been the most amazing experience of my life! I'll be home next August and reunited once again with my overflowing bookcase.

Not much more to say other than wOOt, I'm excited to join!

Hello everybody!

I would like to apologize, to everyone, for my absence the past month. And the inconvinience this may have brought you.

I have had an incredible battle with my ISP and been without internet access for more that 2 weeks - yrk!

As an aftermath, quite a workload had build itself up on my desk, which needed my attention.

In the same period, has been a phase of moving into my new office, together with my new coworkers,. This involved quite alot for painting walls, floors. Decorating, buying funiture, establishing a new kitchen. And getting my IT equipment up and running.

Today I can finally say that things are close to asuming normallity ;)

With that off my chest, I would like to wish you all a nice weekend.

Cheers T

Greetings. I am a newly deceased Tolkien aficionado and I look forward to a long repose among my ghostly brethen.

I have been a fan of Tolkien since I was six years old, and I have read most of the standard books concerning Middle-Earth, including the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Silm. I have always been fascinated by how Tolkien makes his world come to life, describing in detail the history and geography of all his imaginary lands. You almost get the impression that these stories are a chronicle of events that happened in the distant past.

I'm very glad to have found this site and I look forward to some interesting discussions. Elen sila lumenn omentielvo.

Hi!
I read Lord of the Rings the year the first movie came out--and, of course, was hooked. Hm... I have read all of the basics and some unrelated Tolkien stories... The History of Middle Earth volumes are on my list of to-reads. I am a girl (if there was any doubt ;) ) and I love having alter egos.

I came over from TORC to try the RPing here. I'd rather lurk than post, but I'm trying to break that habit. Dunno how often I'll be around...we'll see.

I think I have seen you in the Green Dragon, and been impressed with your posting and clear writing style. Hi there.

I found this board a few months back, but only joined a few days ago. I must say, I'm happy I did.

I was introduced to Tolkien's fantastic work through the release of the first movie in 2001. I was amazed and intrigued by Middle-Earth, and so I got the books that supposedly 'accompanied the movies'. I was blown away by just how massive and immersive Tolkien's universe is, and how much more there was that the movies couldn't show. I read the books as each movies came out, revelling in the Tolkien world. That was until I finished reading The Hobbit . Suddenly, there was nothing more to do - I had read all the books and seen all the movies. So what was next? Simple answer? Discussing them. So, that led me here, and what really caught on with me was the sequence by sequence part of the movies board. I'mlooking forward to clashing with people over movie changes ;) .

As for myself, I'm your average male Tolkien fan. I live in Britain, and the weather is wet and grey at the moment - hardly the sort of weather we should be getting in April...but I'm getting off-topic.

Anyhow, that's my welcome done. Now, onto the boards!

You are most warmly welcome! (It is grey and wet here in Finland too - and it even snowed today!)

Enjoy yourself around here, there and everywhere...

I hate to sound stupid, but...what's the Silmarillion?

The Silmarillion is the Book that will consume your life. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0261102737/qid=1144763880/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_3_1/203-8482334-9335946)

The History of Middle Earth, by that I mean, the historical tales of Middle Earth. From the creation of Middle Earth to the fall of Sauron.

I hate to sound stupid, but...what's the Silmarillion?
Welcome!!! as Hobkill said, the Silmarillion is a collection of "historical" histories about Middle-Earth. Many of the things hinted at in Lord Of The Rings, such as The Fall of Numenor, the fall of the Kings of Gondor, the fall of... ok, you get the general idea :D ... are explained in that book, as well as the creation of Arda (where Middle Earth is) and the fight against the original Dark Lord (Sauron was only his lieutenant back then).

It is a rather different book than Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit, but then LoTR and Hobbit are not exactly very similar either. I'd suggest you start reading the Silmarillion when you know you will have time for it. You may think it's slightly dull to begin with, but all of a sudden you may find yourself reading well past your bed-time.

Just like this forum, it seems harmless but actually, it's been catalogued by the Canadian Food and Drugs administration as "dangerously addictive" :D

Enjoy your time!! And remember Rule number X: Never take Farael too seriously. Welcome!

Hey. I'm new, as you can pretty plainly see. I still haven't had a chance to really look around the place yet. Roa_Aoife asked me to come and play here a little.

Not too much to say about me. You can get my attention with 'Bes', since it's alot shorter to type out. 22, male, absolute nerd... Been into the series ever since my dad showed me the British animation version of The Hobbit when I was a kid. I still have it on Cassette, somewhere here. Been rokeplaying different places on the internet since I was about 11, and I still like it.

So, ah. Hi.

Oh! Totally forgot to introduce myself. What a shame...

Hello, dear Barrowdowners!

Though already 27, I only came across Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings when the movies came out. I quickly absorbed LotR, then the Hobbit, then the Silmarillion and so on. It is such an amazing and deep world Professor Tolkien invented, I cannot put it in words.

The Downs caught my attention because of Guinevere, who, in a german LotR forum we both participate in, frequently mentioned just how wonderful the Downs are.
I have to agree.

Estelyn Telcontar
04-13-2006, 11:31 AM
Which German forum, Macalaure? I checked out one or two back when I came here, but never warmed up to any of them. I also have the problem that I never read the books in German,; having read them in English first, I couldn't bear to plow through the translations. I am, however, a member of the German Tolkien Society.

Macalaure
04-13-2006, 11:41 AM
It was the forum of Herren des Westens (and Elronds Rat, they partially share their forums). It's not that populated, but very nice.
I also published some fanfiction stories on the page.

I read the books in german first (the Krege translation, unfortunately), not knowing back then whether I would like it. Now that I've got the original I'm afraid the translation will only catch dust.

Hail, people of Barrow Downs. Much i've heard about ye but only now i got to join.
I expect to receive and share a bit of knowledge and fun in any way i can offer ^^

Ah, sorry !
I am Yuukale Narmo, wanderer and bard o' elvish lore, pleased to meet ye.
Now i wander in brazilian lands, my (not so dear) homelands.

Ah! If anyone passing by here happens to be a member of the Elvenkindom.net forum, talk to me, we'll sure have lots of things to chat.

One more thing, no bard is bard without a song or a poem, so, here it goes.

I Eldamar Falasi
Aiwilindë Lindië An I Eldar
Eressëa Nainier Áva Hlandenë
Man Cenuva Sinar Sára Fëar ?

- Inye cenuva ! Quentën
An Úna Alassëa Nan....

(translation:
The shores of eldamar
birds sang for the eldar
lonely laments were not heard
who will see those bitter souls

- I'll see ! (I) spoke.
for i'm deprived of joy.)

PS: I know it's a sad poem, but so is my noldorin soul.

Oops, that didn't come out right, I am a very dedicated Tolkien fan don't get me wrong.

And so I shall recite the entire History of Middle Earth and Arda from the Beginning.

"And so, the great god of the Valar, Iluvatar, said 'Ea!' (Be!') and the Arda, (universe) was created.

And Aule the Smith created Middle Earth, for Aule was one of the twelve who were created, the Valar, and he adored all things metal and beautiful...

Hello to you all.
My name is Sabrina, I'm Italian, from Roma so, please forgive me if my English is not perfect...

I'm more than a movie fan, I'm a "movie nuts", even if I don't follow the up to date fashon. I'm sure fond of Peter Jackson thrilogy. In these last few weeks I also purchased the whole extended editions and I'm devouring them.

But I realized that I'm not as skilled as I "needed" to be in LOTR matter, well... to make the long story short: I'm reading The Lord of the rings in original language and I'm finding it absolutely astonishing...

When I finish work at night - I'm a musician and I perform every evening but sunday - I find myself looking forward to going back home to "open that door" and drown myself into Tolkien's world... It seems perfectly real, a piece of history.
Even if sometimes I cannot understand some terms, most of all the ones dealing with nature description, his powerful narrative strenght overcomes my lack of terms... and straight reaches my heart, my human ability of "making " images from reading... and I suddenly find myself inside the book, inside the story...

I think he's not only a writer... he's a painter... with a few brush touches he makes me imagining a whole world...
Forgive my "overlined" enthusiasm. I'm sure that some or many of you, skilled in Tolkien's matter, could find my say a bit silly, but to me, this is a new world and it's incredible the range of emotion I feel while reading it...

A little piece of news: last evening, while I was on my break, I was outside smoking a cigarette and met a usual customer from England who lives in the countryside. We started talking about Tolkien and he told me that when he was 17, (now he's 55sh) his family was short of money, so they rented rooms and once Tolkien's grand daughter stayed in his house for a while , and she was so nice to present him with "The hobbit" autographed by Tolkien himself!!!!
He still has this precious book in his house and saves it gelously.

Have a great day you all, I'm going back to read... ;)
xxx, Sabry

Not silly at all! I think most of us have felt that way at one point or another or we wouldn't be here in the first place. Welcome to the Downs, Raewyn! Enjoy being dead!
