"They had begun to forget: forget their own beginnings and legends, forget what little they had known about the greatness of the world. It was not yet gone, but it was getting buried: the memory of the high and the perilous."

Gandalf about the Shire Hobbits in the appendix of "The quest of Erebor"

I had figured out nearly the whole text, but was puzzled because it didn't sound like a quote but a piece of narrative, like in the prologue... So your hint was very welcome, Ibri!

Ibrīnišilpathānezel

It's Guinevere's turn, morwen. Try asking her for a letter and seeing if you can guess hers. Then, if you are successful, it'll be your turn to supply a quote for others to guess.

R, please.

Morwen, have you ever seen the game show "Wheel of Fotune?" That's how this is played. A player asks for a letter, and if there are any in the phrase, they are revealed. The puzzle is solved when a player can identify the full phrase. This isn't as rigidly structured as the game show; anybody can jump in at any time with the answer, and there aren't "turns" (although for myself, I think it's polite to wait until the result of my request is shown before asking for another letter). And I don't believe the person presenting the puzzle is obliged to offer hints, though it's nice when they do from time to time. Just FYI. :)

Is it possible that 'the' in the second sentence is 'its' in some editions? When I figured out the sentence I thought it was "Ours is but a small matter in the great deeds of this time. A vain pursuit from the beginning, maybe, which no choice of mine can mar or mend." But when I checked it against my copy all I could find was a quote with the word 'its' from Aragorn to Legolas and Gimli.

Ibrīnišilpathānezel

Now, the comment:

For myself (as I am a latecomer to the game and couldn't find a single clear statement of the rules), I mostly use LotR, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion (I've only read The Children of Hurin once, so I'm not as familiar with it), but I occasionally use Unfinished Tales as well, as it contains some good stories in a reasonably finished form that do not appear in the central completed works. I wouldn't touch the HoME books because they contain a lot of conflicting ideas, abandoned versions, and stuff that is just too much "scholarly" material for one to presume that all fans of Tolkien's world would be familiar with them. Almost all Tolkien fans I know (or, more explicitly, those who read the books before the movies came out, which at my age is a hefty percentage of them) have read UT; very few have even touched the HoME books. So I kinda figure that using them as the source would be a rather underhanded attempt to be obscure. It's very safe to assume that any puzzle I post will come from LotR, TH, TS, or UT (probably in that order). I'll eschew UT in the future if people feel it violates the rules too greatly. Just FYI. :)

Oh, I hope UT is allowed. It's far easier for me to solve a puzzle from it then it is from some parts of LotR or the Hobbit. I'm far more likely to be found rereading a portion of the Silm or UT then the others.

First, the solution:
But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know? Gandalf to Denethor
Great quote! :)

as I am a latecomer to the game and couldn't find a single clear statement of the rules

The main "Palantir of Fortune" started out with only LotR, but already in 2003 quotes from the hobbit and the Silmarillion were used as well, and later U.T. quotes. In those days they had to close threads after 10-12 pages and start new ones to conserve bandwidth , and at the head of those later threads the rules were stated . However, later, when the site was upgraded all the old threads were joined together again. (btw, in the beginning we were able to use capital letters for the whole quote, so names couldn't give it away too quickly)

I agree with you that posting quotes from the HoME in the main Palantir thread wouldn't be fair, because only very few people are familiar with them (I guess that's why the separate Palantir-Threads "died"). (Same with the "Minor works" )
