These hobbits will sit on the edge of ruin and discuss the pleasures of the table, or the small doings of their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers, and remoter cousins to the ninth degree, if you encourage them with undue patience.Gandalf to Theoden when they met Merry and Pippin at Isengard.

Doh! And there was me going for a quote without many of the commonly asked letters in it so as to try and be tricksy. It was a high risk strategy, as it is a well-known one, but you lot would go for the two common letters most likely to give it away! ;)

Assuming that terr---e/ E--e-/ stands for Terrible Elves, and with a strong suspicion as for Ta--/ -e-/ --t-/ ----/ ---r--/ hiding Tall men with long swords underneath all its -'s and /'s, I can't help assuming that Gollum spake unto Frodo and Sam, in Dead Marshes, for Dagorlad and old battle stories were what his Granny told him before his sleep. Poor Smeagol, such a trauma, to be told (I suppose, with impersonating faces all along) about all that violence in his gentle years. No wonder he grew up to become Gollum...
Having said assumption, I'm all but forced to check the guess, and have the following:
Tall Men with long swords, and terrible Elves, and Orcses shrieking. They fought on the plain for days and months at the Black Gates. But the Marshes have grown since then, swallowed up the graves; always creeping, creeping
creepy, creepy stuff...
ahem, no need to applause, no need, I know I'm da guesser-outta thingy here

And looking down Tuor saw a great marvel, as it seemed to him; for a wild flood came up the narrows and strove with the river that would still press on, and a wave like a wall rose up almost to the cliff-top, crowned with foam-crests flying in the wind. Then the river was thrust back, and the incoming flood swept roaring up the channel, drowning it in deep water, and the rolling of the boulders was like thunder as it passed.
