Good answer, The Laurenendorian, but it's not the one that I'm looking for. The actual answer is not so clever - it's more of a pun. smilies/rolleyes.gif

4) Eambar?
The Saucepan Man
12-07-2003, 07:57 PM
No. None of those are correct, I'm afraid.
I'll repeat the clues here for ease of reference:
1. Bag End (Hole in bottom of sack.)
2. Olog-Hai (Superior troops may avoid being petrified in battle.)
3. Beorn (Magician found in Combe or near Archet.)
4. Doomed ocean fortress.
5. Evil one gives love-bite, by the sound of it.
6. Horse lord said to have come to an end at this place.
7. Walda (King reverses commercial edict.)
8. A Hobbit who can take his drink?
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)
And now some more hints:
#4 is not a place. Finwe was on the right track with Eambar.
#5 is a bit silly, but what title for an evil one might sound like someone who gives love-bites?
#6 is the name of a horse lord, not a place where one died. The second part of the clue is cryptic.
As for #8, the correct hobbit's surname, and his grandfather, have been given. I'm just looking for another name for him - one that fits in with the "punnish" clue.
Hope that helps. smilies/smile.gif

I can't find the password: My knowledge of Tolkien's mythos is not yet complete. But to end Sauce's reign of terror smilies/evil.gif , I'll share my ideas.
1. At first, I thought that the second to the last letters form the password. They now form this: NARA_NDRA. No word like that, right. What if you reverse it? ANDR_ARAN. Nothing formed still...
2. Then, I realised that maybe the *fill appropriate adjective* Sauce had used some form of step thing. The most promising? NANO_RAIS. Don't know what that means...
Wait...is the password SIRANNON? smilies/cool.gif

1. Bag End (Hole in bottom of sack.)
2. Olog-Hai (Superior troops may avoid being petrified in battle.)
3. Beorn (Magician found in Combe or near Archet.)
4. Alcarondas (Doomed ocean fortress.)
5. Necromancer (Evil one gives love-bite, by the sound of it.)
6. Dunhere (Horse lord said to have come to an end at this place.)
7. Walda (King reverses commercial edict.)
8. Holdwine (A Hobbit who can take his drink?)
9. Orrostar (Headless swordsman and main attraction from Eastern land.)

3) Michel Delving?
Turambar

Right general area, but more obscure (and must fit the cryptic clues)

:smokin: Oh, please let me guess, Master of the Dark Shadow
5) Oliphaunt Song?
Password: ITHRON ?

Little Delving?

More obscure than Little Delving - it's near some awesome uplands.
And #5 is a person.

Lo there, password-solvers (and makers) I venture upon your domain.
Is #3 Dwaling?
Turambar
02-16-2004, 07:39 AM
Welcome, Evisse.
Dwaling, a village in the Eastfarthing near the Hills of Scary, is correct.
Re-posting:
1. Isenmouthe -- Sounds like a cooling cure for drouth in a dead land.
2. Ibun -- Leave one small bread for the second-last of his kind.
3. Dwaling -- Un-tardy dwarf, with Gondor’s first, visits remote village.
4. Seems that 100 well prepared Bree-men were scattered and killed.
5. Alliterative lines describe legend of the faithful friend.
6. Nimloth -- Elegant court dweller wore white blossom for 30 centuries.

#2 is Ibun, son of Mim, the last of the Petty-Dwarves.
(one = I; small bread = bun)

5) Aghan?
Turambar
02-16-2004, 09:07 AM
Ibun is right, Aghan (never heard of him/that) is not.
Of the remaining two, #5 is very easy, #4 is a bit tricky.

5) Luthien or Leithian
The description seems to describe the Lay of Luthien or Leithian.
Turambar

The clue is worded poorly, but refers to a person, not the lay in which he is featured.

Then would it be Daeron?
Turambar
02-16-2004, 12:31 PM
Not Daeron. "Faithful friend" is the straight clue. There's a very obvious cryptic clue in there.

*smacks self in the head*
It's Beleg.

HINTS FOR #4 - Scramble. Person.
Celebrian

Red herrings and hithlain! Arg! #4 has me stumped still. All I can think of at the moment is the Scouring of the Shire, which is not a scrambled person (perhaps many persons scrambling, hah!).
Is the password CARL COTTON, Nib's ID?

Blind guess here...
4) Lenwë?
Evisse the Blue
02-17-2004, 02:14 AM
#4 - Boromir? (will explain if proves to be right) wil refuse to explain if it's wrong:o :p
Turambar
02-17-2004, 06:17 AM
Not Lenwë or Boromir. Two words in the riddle are straight clues. The answer is, as I said, only one person. Three elements of the clue comprise the scramble.
As for the Password, follow the clues and you'll find it.

Emeldir?

No. I'll refine the hint: Bree-men and killed are straight clues; three elements comprise the scramble, and the answer is one person.

I am afraid that I am going to have to close this thread as it is way over the maximum thread length.
Turambar, would you mind starting a new thread and re-posting the rules of the game together with your current conundrum?
Thanks. :)

Rules for this game:
1. The questioner gives a series of questions, each leading to an answer (which the questioner will confirm when guessed).
2. The first letters of the answers form the Password (see example below).
3. Traditionally, the questions can be (but aren't required to be) on the tricksy side, and can include “cryptic clues”, as well summarized by The Saucepan Man here (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3868&perpage=40&pagenumber=1) (i.e., anagrams, synonyms, "sounds like" clues, etc.)
4. The first person to guess the “Password” wins the game, although you still have to solve any remaining questions.
5. You’re allowed to tinker with Rule #2.
Simple example:
(1) Noldor, Sindar or Vanyar.
(2) First Telerin deserter.
(3) Monsters of the Last Desert.
(4) Not a man, to the Witch King’s regret.
Answers:
(1) Elf.
(2) Lenwë.
(3) Wereworms.
(4) Éowyn.
Password: ELWË.

Here’s the current puzzle – only #4, and the Password, remain to be guessed:
1. Isenmouthe -- Sounds like a cooling cure for drouth in a dead land.
2. Ibun -- Leave one small bread for the second-last of his kind.
3. Dwaling -- Un-tardy dwarf, with Gondor’s first, visits remote village.
4. Rowlie Appledore -- Seems that 100 well prepared Bree-men were scattered and killed.
5. Beleg -- Alliterative lines describe legend of the faithful friend.
6. Nimloth -- Elegant court dweller wore white blossom for 30 centuries.
HINTS for #4: It's a person. Bree-men and killed are straight clues. Three elements of the clue comprise a scramble.
HINT for the password: follow the clues and you'll find it.

Is it Rowlie Appledore?
Turambar
02-18-2004, 02:42 PM
Indeed it is - an anagram of IOO WELL PREPARED.
Now just guess the Password, and the honor of going next is yours ! :D
HINTS for the Password:
* Follow the clues !
* More than six letters.

Hmm... they seem to be somehow representative of all the races in Middle-earth... does that have anything to do with the password?
Turambar

How about -
* Follow the clues initially,
* Be aware of Rule #5 (above),
* Then guess the 12-letter Password.

Is it Middle-earth?
Great. Nice guess. Next you'll tell me you're not failing Physics.
Am not...wait, I am. But who cares - I'm shifting, remember.
A new alter-ego comes: Guys, this is the Quiz Room, not a private message.
OK. *shuts up*
OK. My answer's still Middle-earth.

* Follow the clues initially, Well, the initials of the answers are IIDRBN
* Be aware of Rule #5 (above), So, it's not just the intitials, huh? ;)
* Then guess the 12-letter Password. Ah, so we need another 6 letters. How about adding another letter after each of those that we already have ...

Ah, there it is ...
