Urwen, I have tried the others and couldn't solve them. I guessed Sauron/Celebrimbor, then deleted my post because Huey had answered correctly 2 minutes earlier. I don't know why his previous posts weren't showing when I posted that.

Can't get 9 without scrambling. Am I right?

Actually, you can. You can substitute the nasal and vowel bit for a solfeggio note and get the same result.

Tamarind is a legume.

Is there a Tar-Manid or a Tar-Damin? ;)

Most legumes I can find are kinds of beans or peas, none of which appear to unscramble and produce a Numenorean.

I told you, the legume is not the Numenorian, there are 2 separate words in the answer. Also, you mention the right legume in this post - but not the right Numenorian. The clue is simple and a bit silly, don't overthink it.

No to all of the Tars.

Maybe a reference to Arda being about to become round, not flat.

That kind of round, but again, much too grand for what I'm talking about. It just means "round" is a straight clue descriptor of the answer. Which, in cryptic terms, is nearly a Numenorian's legume. It even follows the same grammatical structure. Sub in a Numenorian, sub in a legume, and that is nearly the answer, which is round.

The S could be SAMWISE, but I can't figure out who the headless 80s singer would be from MWIE. (It's almost 'Bowie', but then there's that spare M).

I'm guessing "Adalgrim's Aunt" is Belladonna Took-Baggins; she's technically his first cousin once removed or something, but that's a closer relationship than between Frodo and "Uncle" Bilbo, so perhaps Hobbits just call anyone one generation above you but within the same extended family Aunt or Uncle.

That N is a puzzler, though, and no mistake.

ARSE. S leapfrogs over to before the S. Well, E does too, but since the arse is disorientated, it loses its E altogether. (Probably mid-jump). Then it meets [GARY N]UMAN. As the singer is headless, the N is lost.

In this one the [numbers] indicate which letter you need. And two of the answers are in Elvish.

1. - An old man eats, hears an old thorn. [1]
2. - Kick it in, lose the first in third but gain the fourth, and Bilbo brings it home. [3]
3. - A policeman to fill the tubs. [5]
4. - Of old a lower vista for Fred's wife, mother of rock. [4]
5. - What the wizard brings to five plus a vowel. [4]
6. - In forbidden tongue the type of gaol is more than half cross, note. [2]
7. - Noble when hot? Tyler sounds uncertain. [3]
8. - Thrice ten is a lot, but only three each below the window and in the song. [1]

That's some really good theorising, but falls foul of the fact that the answer isn't bed.

It's WILMA.

From here (https://powerlisting.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Elemental_Abilities#Description)

o.O Okay, so the classical elements are earth-air-fire-water. A slightly later set was sulfur-mercury-salt. Chinese lists often include metal and wood, alongside some or all of the classical set. And modern fiction includes everything under the sun (Angband (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=19522) includes Fire, Lightning, Time, and Nexus, among many others.) And then there's chemistry, which has 118 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_table).

This password isn't a closed set, but all of them appear in the Legendarium.

2. GOLD: "Kick it in" = GOAL, "lose the first in third" = the A in third place, "but gain the fourth" = the fourth letter in the fourth place, "and Bilbo brings it home" = well, he does.

SILVER is correct, as Sil-Ver, with 30 pennies being the reference. ("Thrice ten" just to avoid saying "thirty".)

3. COPPER. Slang for policeman, and a copper can be a tub/receptacle.

Correct; the water for the baths is poured from it.

1. EARTH? Ear, eat ... thorn made the 'th' sound?

Ear + th (thorn); 'old man eats' is Bombadil's words to Old Man Willow.

(And this was one of the things you missed, Urwen - you listed Earth, which does have a letter in the right place!)

5. FIRE, brought by Gandalf?

Oh, because fifteen birds in five FIR trees!

Bingo. (Not Bungo; that was two passwords ago!)

EARTH - An old man eats, hears an old thorn. [1]
GOLD - Kick it in, lose the first in third but gain the fourth, and Bilbo brings it home. [3]
COPPER - A policeman to fill the tubs. [5]
WILMA - Of old a lower vista for Fred's wife, mother of rock. [4]
FIRE - What the wizard brings to five plus a vowel. [4]
6. N - In forbidden tongue the type of gaol is more than half cross, note. [2]
WATER - Noble when hot? Tyler sounds uncertain. [3]
SILVER - Thrice ten is a lot, but only three each below the window and in the song. [1]

And, strewth, only one to go? Um... okay, #6 is not an English word, and part of the clue explains that.

Huinesoron

Anga?

... is correct! Ang[er] + a vowel, for the first half of 'Angamando' (Q. for Angband, "Iron Jail").

ANGA - In forbidden tongue the type of gaol is more than half cross, note. [2]
WATER - Noble when hot? Tyler sounds uncertain. [3]
SILVER - Thrice ten is a lot, but only three each below the window and in the song. [1]

A mix of chemical and classical elements from the books. I... am... not sure, in hindsight, why I didn't just use IRON for that last one, except that it would have made WILMA stand out even more.

Well, some books have more than one name. That is your password hint, and when you solve the password, solving the rest of the clues will be easier.

Pervinca Took
07-17-2021, 03:21 PM
Well, 'Morgoth's Ring' is like another version of 'The Silmarillion.' I can't find a way to translate that kind of ring and fit it into the password, though. More of a job for Huey, perhaps?

I think it's the same word, actually: 'rach' is the (possibly consonant-mutated) Sindarin word, which looks like a cognate to a Quenya 'racco' (though, full disclosure, I can't find 'racco' anywhere).

Anyway, yes, apparently the Narn is also known as the Narn e-'Rach Morgoth, or Tale of the Curse of Morgoth.

So... #4, I think 'returning' tells us that we need the final letter, and Morwe [the male Avarin leader] + N[orth] = MORWEN.

... except we've... already got Morwen. Um. Is 'Salle' a male name, to give NELLAS?

That last R...

A preposition between a long and short direction. It's all in disarray, and backwards. For him.

'backwards' suggests the R is the final letter. I think it likely that the R is the 'short direction' - I can't easily come up with either prepositions or directions which include the letter!

I think the structure is [direction written in full] + [preposition] + R, with a bit of scrambling between the two words. But I haven't been able to come up with a name that fits.

Phew! Because I'd never even heard of him and only ran into him when going through the various answers' pages to see if there were any clues. :D

Okay, difficulty level might be a bit patchwork on this, you know how it goes:

1. - An older sister, almost a maid, lies nearly backward at first.
2. - The king is back - let a criminal rat be back too.
3. - From beginning to end, a massage from the midst of Hell for the father of kings.
4. - The tall game of removal: a short Russian holds the three of diamonds (fake) at the back.
5. - Look northward, bow, glare - or something like that, anyway.
6. - Break a hire around a torn and shortened roll, end up younger by half.
7. - Turn tail, jeweller! Fear the doubled vowel with no injection.
8. - In the middle of the evening, they are when you forget, eh?

At least some answers are not using the first letter, and the clues say as much.
