I think the Lorien lookout elves say Sam breathes loudly. Or that all the mortals do. Is it something to do with that? Legolas translates it.
Could the Frenchmen be Cordon Bleu chefs?
Cordon Bleu was originally an order of knights, Google tells me:
'The French term cordon bleu is translated as "blue ribbon". According to Larousse Gastronomique, the cordon bleu "was originally a wide blue ribbon worn by members of the highest order of knighthood, L'Ordre des chevaliers du Saint-Esprit, instituted by Henri III of France in 1578.'

T: French for "betrayal" is trahison. If we drop the -ison as somehow being "care", and add lad > ald, we meet TRAHALD.
E: so you can make a soundalike for ESGAROTH from the first syllables of your three words: Ex > es, jar > gar (like "gif"), out > outh > oth.
H: so I wanted "lost weight" to mean a letter or two removed (eg g, lb), but that makes it really hard to find an H. If it doesn't, mean that, then we could be looking at O + (B/N)ob + light, which... I guess it has most of the letters for HOBBITON? You can get even closer with Nil + Bob + hot, if the weight-loss made him attractive (or sweaty).
B: No idea; I'm gonna guess BILBO or BALIN, as both are either gallant or brave and have liquids in their names.

1. Angband? Singular and undescriptive. You in, by the sound of it, and cold and blue.
2. Me, a Numenorean queen, loses myself when confusion noted, and shining bright.

5. Earwen changes the head of war for backwards top, and a relative appears.

(Urin is an old form of Hurin's name.)
In order of my thought process this morning:
#7: A SICKLE is a coin from Harry Potter, I believe.
#3: Can't make this Gondor, but if you remove R(ight) from Arnor, you get ANOR, the Sun.
Hmm... lots of sky stuff here.
#5: the 'head of war' is W. "Earen" evokes a certain name that fits the theme, and sure enough, a top is a lid > EARENDIL.
If #4 gets 'five first', that could be a Roman V, which means the password can be HEAVENS.
#1: Should end with -uin (but not the whale). Angband is the Hells of Iron; take away the plural and the descriptor and we get the stay HELLUIN.
#4: 'it floats' + V suggests VINGILOT, ship of Earendil. Ringil > Vingil, 'over top' could be top backwards, and 'for a right' would indicate that we're only using the right part, ie -ot.

Yes and yes and yes! Vingilot comes from Ringil - R(ight) + V (Roman 5) + O. T. (first of Over Top).
One more to go!
1. HELLUIN: Angband? Singular and undescriptive. You in, by the sound of it, and cold and blue.
2. E Me, a Numenorean queen, loses myself when confusion noted, and shining bright.

Nelyafinwe (Maedhros) & Dark Enemy (Morgoth): "Morgoth took Maedhros and hung him from the face of a precipice upon Thangorodrim, and he was caught to the rock by the wrist of his right hand in a band of steel."
Gollum & Daur (Frodo): "`All we need is something to keep a hold on him,' said Frodo. '... Tie one end to his ankle, and keep a grip on the other end.'" [Two Towers]
Ernil i Pheriannath (Pippin) & Glamhoth (Orcs): "For the moment Pippin was unwatched. His legs were securely bound, but his arms were only tied about the wrists, and his hands were in front of him." [Two Towers]
Dark Lord (Melkor) & Angainor: "Melkor took refuge in the uttermost pit. Then Tulkas stood forth as champion of the Valar and wrestled with him, and cast him upon his face; and he was bound with the chain Angainor that Aulë had wrought, and led captive..." [Silmarillion]

Gah! When Dark Enemy first popped up, I thought it was referring to Morgoth and the Angainor - but then assumed I was just wrong about that pair when he was paired up with Maedhros, and just never returned to it.
I loved that password, Hui. It is creative and hilarious. It's amazing that you managed to find so many first letter clues too. It's actually quite remarkable how many people were bound at one point or another (as to who bound Frodo - Shelob did, I kept trying to force her into the password too!), and, ME kinkiness aside, it's such a ridiculously wonderful theme, and so well done. I still can't get over Nomnomnom. Tasty Elvses!

Sorry, Urwen. I have played on the Riddle thread a little in the past, but not much, and never on the other. I don't have enough headspace and my heart would not be in it. Especially in this heat and whilst looking after my dad, who is recovering from Covid.
I enjoy the Password thread because it's like doing cryptic crosswords, and doesn't feel like a chore.

A day or two? I've asked people to revive it in May, and it has been two months since then, not 'a day or two'.
Not to mention that you had almost six months to revive them before I reminded you. If you had truly wanted to revive them, you would have done so by now. Six months.
The Riddle thread has been inactive for almost a year since you posted. True, I have posted with the intention to revive it, but no one wanted to, so don't patronize me.
I didn't decide on a whim. I gave you plenty of time to continue them. Don't blame me when you couldn't be bothered to do so for a year.

Maybe it's better that one thread continues than none, though? The multiple clues and 'crossword' nature of this one make it easier to keep it going.
I occasionally buy puzzle books, but find in the end that I only want to do the crosswords.

No quarrels, yes fans! Though we had a thunderstorm here a few days ago which broke the heat for a couple days.
Maybe, but it hasn't been a few days. It had been a year. Or specifically, it had been a year since the other threads had any new puzzle.
Yes, threads sometimes fall silent. There are pages upon pages of silent threads collectig dust on the Downs, many have been sitting there for a lot longer than a year, these just happen to be the ones you want to revive - and it was only a couple days ago that you put out the call for revival, but you did not give anyone a chance to respond to your call. I was entirely willing to try revive one or two with you until you came out with your unilateral declaration. I still am willing to do so - not immediately, at least a few days from now because I am busy over the weekend - but it would be for the purpose of enjoying the puzzles, not for meeting some arbitrary deadline for intervals between posts. So if you can accept that posts may take several days in coming, we can restart another game. If not, then sorry, I'm out. And another thing - you have requested that the threads be closed. Now imagine what would have happened if a mod went ahead and did what you requested, even if you had the right to unilaterally shut down these threads. If your goal is to have them revived, I must say shutting them down achieves the exact opposite purpose. I am not participating in any of the games on such terms, where if the forum activity somehow does not meet your standards you call game over for everyone. If we can do this patiently, respectfully, and without ultimatums, let's do it. When it gets this way though, I lose all appetite for participating in the thread, and we go back to the initial dilemma. Please take down your last post in those threads, and we can try to return to the positive spirit of your initial request to revive them a few days ago.

Narsil is a sword, so isn't a 'he'. Nargil appears in Beleg's whetting spell, and might be a mortal - or a knife - or a dwarf - or another name for Angrist. Another Nargil is a pass into Mordor. Uhm... NANA-KIL > NARMA-CIL, Kings of Gondor?

Yes indeed. Sometimes by other names, but the clue asked for the person, not the specific letters, in those instances.
I THINK the Great Goblin was a kinsman of Azog. And I suppose he is anyway in the broad sense, since both are goblins.

14 - I was pretty sure Ancalime didn't want to marry anyone, but had to look up the exact reference. "That would be Úner (which is 'Noman'), whom I prefer above all others."
Sources are unclear as to whether she means Noman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odysseus) or Gnome Ann (https://xkcd.com/1704/); or possibly she was just into ladies ("No living man am I!").

Oh sweet Nienna, that was the bondage one wasn't it? You're really getting into this.
Okay, I feel like the Phial and the light of the evenstar are a pair (one contains the other) - but they're the only pair I've found! Eggshell ought to be quite distinctive, because the only instance I can remember is the riddle. Hmm... is #23 something like GOLD? Could also be RICHES or at a stretch HOARD.
And I guess the Silmarils contain the light of the Trees, which would fit for #6... it says elvish, so CALA or one of its relatives perhaps?
Okay, the password looks like it might have 'and fetter' in, starting from #13. That suggests TRAHALD for #18. Can't do the D, though.

1. Cormacolindor?
Huinesoron
09-28-2022, 09:44 AM
Taking a look at the pairs so far, I can make:
Saruman - Olorin
Azog's Kinsman - Nori
Shelob - Iorhael
Silmarils - Radiance of the Trees
Nerwen's Phial - Evening Star's Light
Elessar - Trahald
Eggshell - Riches
Faramir - (Cormacolindor)
Theoden - Eomer
Which leaves "Arkenstone" and "No-one", along with T (a king), D (someone short), R (a male), and E (unknown).
The only time the Arkenstone was particularly fettered was when Bilbo stole it - the rest of the time it was just kind of lying about. Could some descriptive phrase for Bilbo be the D clue? "short yet doughty" would fit.
I seem to recall that No-one ever caught Tom Bombadil about his ramblings, but I don't think there's a name that will fit any of the clues. He's a master, not a king.
I really want E to be Eonbon or Eumbug or something like that. ^_^

hS
Wrong about the D clue. It's cryptic, and composed of two elements (as in parts - not chemical ones).
Remember that the constraining and fettering is sometimes/often metaphorical. And think of the final, (well, excluding Dagor Dagoraths and stuff) resting place of the Arkenstone.
Pairs are correct, but 'Cormacolindor' means 'Ringbearers,' and is not the first answer.
'No-one' is paired with someone who fits, but perhaps not 'screamingly' so.
I tried all kinds of words/synonyms to make a password that did what Huey's did, and 'Constrainees And Fetterers' was literally the only such phrase I could make possible answers work with.

Perhaps Dwalin was constrained by Thrain to accompany him on his original quest to Erebor? That would mean R sits with No-one.

THRANDUIL: Two kings mix – an ancient Brit, a dwarf – and make a third;
RADIANCE OF THE TREES: Illumination, fair beyond the scope of elvish word.
ARKENSTONE: Marvellous and radiant, at mountain’s heart it lies,
IORHAEL: Strength, endurance past hope’s end – such anguish in his eyes …
NERWEN'S PHIAL: Gifted, this, to light him, when all other lights should fail,
ELESSAR: … And one who tries to heal him, and many souls who ail.
EGGSHELL: This thing cracks so easily, you walk on it with care;
SARUMAN: And this one’s speech enchants, but only listen if you dare!
AZOG'S KINSMAN: ‘Murderers and elf-friends!’ in great wrath by him was said;
NO-ONE: Ancalime – in preference, this is the one she’d wed.
DWALIN: The French breeze it is mingled for him; short yet doughty, he,
FARAMIR: And distant is a jewel? His quality is plain to see.
EVENING STAR'S LIGHT: Earendil is its guardian; a Silmaril its form;
TRAHALD: It’s heartbreaking and hideous, to see this one transform.
THEODEN: No lair after an article, that’s definite, for him,
EOMER: And Eastern Rome morphs into one of the brave Rohirrim!
RADAGAST: Starts radical – appalled, he sounds! No ire, though, ’neath his ’lids.
EREBOR: Just change the first for mints and sweets we ate when we were kids.
RICHES: This word means wealth or treasures, that are used for good or ill,
SILMARILS: And for these things, so wondrous fair, unnumbered tears will spill.
PAIRS:
Saruman - Olorin
Azog's Kinsman - Nori **
Shelob - Iorhael
Silmarils - Radiance of the Trees
Nerwen's Phial - Evening Star's Light
Elessar - Trahald
Eggshell - Riches
Faramir - Conin en Annun
Theoden - Eomer
Erebor - Arkenstone
No-one - Radagast *
Thranduil - Dwalin **
* And actually, you can reverse this pair and it still works - he constrains no-one and is constrained by no-one.
** Dwalin and Nori swapped around also works, of course .

Non-themed passwords are fine, though I think we'll all drive ourselves crazy trying to find the theme anyway. :D
This one is strongly themed, though the password itself is only part of the theme if you squint really hard.
1. - Not a ewe's namesake, the ground is missing you.
2. - A short Swedish band's slightly mixed diction, like Duke Edward.
3. - The darkest is mixed up - are Batman's city misspelled slightly?
4. - Forward the sphere, backward the VP, chop out the heart and find the angel.
5. - I am briefly a cat, you owe yourself a consonant, in the loch, quick!
6. - Second confused digit is confusing up here.
7. - A pair of vowels runs in confusion, comes second.

I am so used to crypticclues by now that you automatically read the instruction words as instruction words, but with these types of clues I love to allow myself the pleasure of literal interpretation for the sake of fun, and have to admit I just broke down at "I am briefly a cat". :D Also, I feel that the most appropriate answer, both literal AND cryptic, to the clue about confused second digit is: "Wot???" :p
I highly suspect that GROND is if not the answer to #1 then part of the answer, but no idea what the ewe has to do with it.

It is great fun to come up with clues that "make sense" linguistically, but are utter nonsense when actually considered. I am briefly a cat. ^_^
And... 'wot' is not the answer, but it is more than half of it. :D

4. BALROG.
BAL(L) + (E)ROG (Al Gore, a former Vice-President).
...
And I think 2 must be ABDICATION. AB(BA) + DICTION with an A in it but otherwise not mixed - so perhaps it's ABBA that's slightly mixed, before shortening.
King Edward abdicated and became a Duke.
I suppose Aragorn and many other Numenorean kings abdicated, too.

6 - perhaps TOWER, two...er?
Yep! I was confused, so you should be too.
GAMBITS for the password?
Correct! Very much just 'a word that fit the answers', I'm afraid.
4. BALROG.
BAL(L) + (E)ROG (Al Gore, a former Vice-President).
Entirely right. (As a Maia, a balrog is still an angel!)
And so is this. AB(B)A + diction, for the Duke of Windsor aka Edward VIII.
The abdication referred to here is not connected to a death (unlike, say, Aragorn's).
5. IMLACH? Has I'M and CA(T) and most of LOCH. Not sure about 'owe yourself a consonant,' though.
I'm = I am, briefly; the cat is not brief, and the loch is not LOCH. This one is an English noun, derived from an adjective.
GROND - Not a ewe's namesake, the ground is missing you.
ABDICATION - A short Swedish band's slightly mixed diction, like Duke Edward.
MORGOTH - The darkest is mixed up - are Batman's city misspelled slightly?
BALROG - Forward the sphere, backward the VP, chop out the heart and find the angel.
5. I - I am briefly a cat, you owe yourself a consonant, in the loch, quick!
TOWER - Second confused digit is confusing up here.
SAURON - A pair of vowels runs in confusion, comes second.

5. IMPETUOUSNESS?
NESS gives us the loch, (I hope - there are an awful lot of Scottish lochs!)
Ah, cat is PET, perhaps?
U You
O Owe
US Yourself - maybe literally, in text language, or You plus N for a consonant?
(I tried 'impatience' first).
GAMBITS are STRATEGIES, I believe, but sort of 'opening' strategies, which are often a bit of a gamble?
Hang on ...
Morgoth was Eru's gambit - and a risky one. And the Valar's, when they gave him a second chance?
Sauron was the Valar's - a second chance again?
Grond was Sauron's gambit?
Isengard (Tower) was Saruman's?
Impetuousness - Sauron's, counted on by Gandalf?
Abdication - not sure, if it isn't a Numenorean lying on his death bed. I think there are people in thd annals who 'refused the sceptre,' but you'd have had to accept it in the first place to abdicate, I think.
Balrog - Feanor's?
I'm sure GAMBIT was a late 70s/early 80s game show. It was also a film starring a very acrobatic Shirley MacLaine, (upside down, stealing a diamond, 'The Wrong Trousers' style, IIRC!)
(Edward VIII was not the first Duke Edward on Wikipedia - I went up a blind alley until it was clear it was about abdication - not used to hearing the former Duke of Windsor called that!)

Non-sceptre abdications include Finrod's renunciation of Nargothrond and Maedhros passing on the title of High King to Fingolfin. Doesn't help me figure out what this closed set is though.
Oh. Wait. Is it the demises/ends/events causing the passing of the title of the High Kings of the Noldor?
GROND - Fingolfin
ABDICATION - Maedhros
MORGOTH - Finwe
BALROG - Feanor
IMPETUOUSNESS - Fingon presumably, whose people rushed too soon onto Anfauglith
TOWER - Turgon
SAURON - Gil-galad
What is the debatable item? And I still don't see how Gambit applies to some of them...

That's right! Though the impetuous one was Feanor; apparently Gothmog killed both him and Fingon, so I was able to swap back and forth.
"Gambit" is very much a "what word fits these answers" password - my second option was MAGGOTS. But taking the sense of 'risky strategy', most of them died in battle against superior foes, Maedhros resigned to try and heal the rift in the Noldor, and Finwe was only at Formenos to try and generate sympathy for Feanor. So it kiiind of fits.
The debatable one is Maglor, who was presumably at least Acting High King while Maedhros was hanging around Thangorodrim. But Maglor's a bit wet, and is never actually accorded the title in the books anyway. (Also, Finarfin - but his reign is ongoing!)
And over to Pervinca!

For #1, we're looking at this quote:
Beautiful she is, sir! Lovely! Sometimes like a great tree in flower, sometimes like a white daffadowndilly, small and slender like. Hard as diamonds, soft as moonlight. Warm as sunlight, cold as frost in the stars. Proud and far-off as a snow-mountain, and as merry as any lass I ever saw with daisies in her hair in springtime. But that's a lot o' nonsense, and all wide of my mark.
Since the clue is "fair as", I would guess either GREAT TREE or DAFFADOWNDILLY... um, DAFFODIL for the answer.

Okay, so: 3 and 5 are very similar. I think 3 might be another 'Someone's Something'. That means 5 is either the same person or the same thing. Additionally, 2 references 'answer number 5', which likely means the, uh, actual answer to question 5. So solving any of these three will help with the other two.
The letters we will need are 3rd - 1st - 2nd - probably 3rd.
If the Bombadil reference is direct, then things called yellow at Tom and Goldberry's are:
- Her hair
- His boots
- Cream
- The sunrise
CREAM seems to fit best, though I don't think the sort of cream Tom serves would go well on your knees!
