Huinesoron

2/ appears to be the only one with any kind of straight clue ("what her race guards"). The phrasing makes me think of the Crossings of Teiglin, which was specifically guarded by the Haladin; but how many women of the Haladin are there? Certainly none with any variations on 'crossing', 'ford', or 'teiglin' in their names.
3/ 'Norse God' is quite likely to be Odin or Thor, but what sort of musical composition? 'Song' would be shortest, but that would give us a name with two Os and a G in it, which sounds pretty unlikely. (All right, there's a fair few actually, but none that jump out as fitting the other letters.)
4/ A 'Spanish measurement' - one clue or two? Metro or milla are decent guesses for Spanish units of measurement, but we could be looking at two words.
5/ So... it's an anagram of 'hedgehog' plus one of A-G?

So, THORONDOR, with the musical composition being... a round? Except with the wrong vowel. Maybe it's called a rondo in Italian or something?
This is actually a pretty good clue, if you realise that 'in a spin' applies only to the musical composition; that lets you look for Norse gods at the start of words and back-form from there. Of course, I didn't realise that, which is why I had to wait for the hint.

Huinesoron
05-31-2019, 08:44 AM
So #4 is a female Ainu with an R in her name, of which there are...
... uh, three? Varda, Vaire, and Arien.
So who's the answer? Assuming 'note' means A-G, any one of these could be 'a Spanish measurement':
-Vard
-Vara
-Vire
-Vair
-Rien
-Arin
Oddly enough, quite a few of them get translated by Google from Spanish, but not as terms of measurement (the closest is vair as 'will go'). There's no anagram indicator... 'in' could be 'inch', but that would mean 'ar' would have to indicate Spain somehow, which I don't know that it does.
Y'know what, I'm gonna go with that. ARIEN for #4.
As for #2: so it's either Fimbrethil or Wandlimb, then? Hard to pin down which without knowing whether the 'muddle' applies to all the sections; I was tempted by 'brethil for 'that which her race guards', since it's a Sindarin word for a type of tree, but it's definitely not muddled (and would leave 'im' as a 'shortened hill').

So we're looking for a synonym for 'spoil', with a synonym for 'beam', truncated and placed in the middle of it. No anagram indicator.
So if the words were 'ruin' and 'plank', the answer would be ru + pla + in. Except that's not a Tolkien name. ^_^
Spoil could be rot-decay-mould, ruin-wreck-damage, or (if Pervinca is a big fan of Time Team) something like earth, dirt, or even slag (heap, as in blast furnace). Or of course 'soil', but that seems a bit too on the nose.

5 looks like an anagram, but also a soundalike; that makes me wonder if it's actual an anagram of 'fish' itself, since stacking synonym+anagram+sounds-like is pretty heavy. But... well, unless CHIPH is a famous Tolkien character I've forgotten, I can't do much with that.
2 looks like we just push two nicknames together. 'Geezer' can mean either 'man' or 'old man'; I wonder if this is a pop culture reference, though, rather than pointing to two Tolkien characters.
3 I have no idea. It looks like the sort of clue where the first half actually includes the name written straight, hidden in the words... but I can't see one in there.
4... 'disquiets a little' could indicate a slight anagram of a genre. 'Drama' nearly gives AMROD, but that's the best I can do (and that's not 'a little').
7... I really liked your 'Tar-' idea, Urwen, but the pronouns don't seem to work. 'Pastry' could mean a specific baked good, or the ingredient... ah. FILO pastry, endless, +I = FILI.
With BOFUR and FILI in place, the password could be a few things. Glanduin the river of Eriador seems unlikely; Glirhuin the mortal Harper at least gives a First Age connection. Goldórin (Telerin for 'Quenya') seems even less likely, and Gwathren (Sindarin, 'shadowy') doesn't say much.
So I'll have to go with GLIRHUIN for the password, and guess that they're all musicians (the dwarves in the Unexpected Party).

If NER also means 'old', then it's Elrond (OLD+NER)
And the last one is Fingon (which sounds like FIN GONE)

It is Elrond, but at least TRY to find two names in it. Both of them are short for something.
Huey, I personally think 'Only Fools And Horses' has been horrendously overplayed, but if you've ever seen an episode, you should know one of the names.

I wondered about that, but (to show you exactly how bad my anagram game is), I looked at DELRON and went 'nope, that's not a character', and then wandered off. ^_^
('ner' of course is 'man', so old+ner would be a bilingual translation of 'geezer', I guess.)

TRIVIA: Alone of Thorin's company, Oin and Gloin do not play an instrument at the Unexpected Party. Bombur plays a drum, but I could not fit both him and Bofur into the puzzle.
DEL (short for Derek) and RON (short for Ronald) gives us ELROND.

Well, this one was sorta made in jest, but I can't resist putting it up, mostly because the clues and the answers fit in so perfectly.
1. What, in Latin? A city and an element. In turmoil, dark ones are revealed
2. Cured, with a direction? She is there.
3. The Young one loses way, and he is found
4. Here, a confused mafia boss is within slang in a spin.
5. Mix four elements and see him.
6. Close the lid. Rile everyone up. See her within.
7. Here, a toxic alcohol gains direction.
Hope you enjoy it anyway.

Got the elves the wrong way round.
MORIQUENDI.
QUID + ROME + NI(CKEL).
And Rome was the city I thought most likely anyway, before I mixed up the light and dark elves.

Yeah, but I didn't... :) Unfortunately I have a lot to do at work this week, so I won't have time to enjoy myself with passwords. Best to take it yourself, I think.

Though pedant proud this setter be,
To overload a clue, e’en she
Unwilling is, so therefore, peers,
For some of these, LOOK TO YOUR EARS! :-
1. Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.
2. He’s a seafaring amputee! Ouch!
3. These elves (and the lost boys) adore her.
4. This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.
5. Something you probably do if Rankin Bass orcs are driving you.
6. Wee dog loses direction, but prances and pivots until he’s found!
7. Distance a horse can travel on its posterior? Vowel shift! Here it is!
8. An unsung hero, because he evidently unblocked the toilet in Gondolin, even without being noted for it!
9. Dunno how this geezer keeps his specs on, or stops his helm falling over his nose!
10. Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

So it's either Council members, or twins. Good to know.
Pervinca Took
06-05-2019, 03:06 PM
I take it that's sarcasm.
Just because there were 3 council ones, it doesn't mean there will be 3 musician ones. The council ones happened because my computer was down and I could not get at my stash of prepared passwords. Twin and musician research meant I had enough for two of each, and the aforementioned stash had by then been used up.
