7... is a furlong measured by horses? Because BAMFURLONG is only a U off from the clue if so. :)

4... sigh. A FLOATING LOG, huh?

(And technically there's a Wendy connection in Tolkien... one of the early names he considered for Melian was Gwendoling or something like it. But I don't think it's relevant.)

THE FLOATING LOG: This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.
5. Something you probably do if Rankin Bass orcs are driving you.
6. Wee dog loses direction, but prances and pivots until he’s found!
BAMFURLONG: Distance a horse can travel on its posterior? Vowel shift! Here it is!
8. An unsung hero, because he evidently unblocked the toilet in Gondolin, even without being noted for it!
9. Dunno how this geezer keeps his specs on, or stops his helm falling over his nose!
10. Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

Furlongs are always being mentioned in horse racing. Especially 'the final furlong' in the Grand National.

From Google definition: "Old English*furlang, from*furh*‘furrow’ +*lang*‘long’. The word originally denoted the length of a furrow in a common field (formally regarded as a square of ten acres). It was also used as the equivalent of the Roman*stadium, one eighth of a Roman mile, whence the current sense. Compare with*stadium."

Not a horsey term in origin, then.

Exactly!

The rhyme I put at the beginning indicates that it only needs to *sound* like 'gone.' But the 'note' thing was needed to get rid of the D, because that letter is not silent.

Oh ... did you think 'unsung' meant get rid of another note? Actually, that's so cool I'll pretend I intended it. :D I actually added 'unsung hero' as a wry joke about the heroic act of unblocking a toilet. I mean, what's the point of being a great elvish warrior if you can't deal with everyday, practical matters?

Look at the song in 'The Hobbit.' When the dwarves are chained together in the cave, and the orcs are whipping them down to Goblin Town.

The Rankin-Bass reference was just for humour and the 'whip' connection.

6 makes me think of Roverandom, but I'm not sure we can do anything with that.

1: A butty is a sandwich (usually as 'chip butty' in my experience). Hmm... a sandwich is also a sarnie, so that suggests SARN FORD. You lose 'i.e.', which kind of fits with '- before that'.

9: This must be a name with 'ear' in it (for the specs), but EARENDIL doesn't seem to fit. EARNIL = ear + nil (= none), so that would work.

5: could this simply be FALL?

The lyrics are listed here (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Down,_Down,_To_Goblin_Town), too.

So what might you do if that's being sung at you? There's a fair few verbs mentioned (and a few more in the poem it comes from), but nothing jumps out as being anything other than a verb; no place- or person-names.

GO is the most repeated one; there's no other verbs unambiguously directed at the captives in the song ('batter, jabber' could be). In the poem, both 'work' and 'shirk' are, and arguably 'pound'.

Or it could be synonyms, which is where fall came into things (as a synonym for descend, go down, &c).

One more correct answer so far.

The verb you want is kind of similar to jabber and batter. Closer to jabber, I would say.

YAMMER: Something you probably do if Rankin-Bass orcs are driving you.
CURUNIR: Wee dog loses direction, but prances and pivots until he’s found!
BAMFURLONG: Distance a horse can travel on its posterior? Vowel shift! Here it is!
TURGON: An unsung hero, because he evidently unblocked the toilet in Gondolin, even without being noted for it!
EARNIL: Dunno how this geezer keeps his specs on, or stops his helm falling over his nose!
SORONTO: Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

PASSWORD & THEME: SILLY CLUES.

Yes, Soronto is made of baby kangaroo snot. Who knew? :D

Huinesoron

Precisely that, Pervinca (though in this case it was a Text document on a desktop).

Since tomorrow is now upon us, here you go:

1. West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.
4. No light, and it sounds like no Hell either; it's all backwards!
5. Mother jumbled up the marbles.
6. A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

For Reasons, I'm going to need to insist on at least two-thirds of a clue being explained with each answer.

Spot on for 6. 2, yes (with 'mae' sounding like 'my'). 1 I can't give you; you only got half of the clue right, unless you can clarify why 'briefly a ring-slinger, is attending' comes out as LING.

(I'll tell you now that anagrams are only involved in one clue.)

1. M?????? - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. MAEGLIN - Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. ??E???? - One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.
4. ???G??? - No light, and it sounds like no Hell either; it's all backwards!
5. ????L?? - Mother jumbled up the marbles.
6. MAEGLI? - A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. ??????N - Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

That looks like you've just taken the first two words of the clue (and still ended up missing a letter). Can you find an answer that makes use of the entire thing?

7. Gem+A, with Lin as backward countries, but which ones?

Oddly enough, you've split the clue correctly, but gotten the two halves of the clue attached to precisely the wrong halves of the answer. :)

1. M?????? - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.

Funny how he too was gonna be impaled by a spear if it weren't for his 'ma'.

Uh... 'LIN' would be three-sevenths of 'JAVELIN'.

“Good heavens!” growled Beorn. “Don’t pretend that [Huinesoron]s can’t count. They can."

5 is MA+ELGIN

It is! And the only anagram in the set.

1. M?????? - West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. MAEGLIN - Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. ??E???? - One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.

Yes (can you explain why?).

Then dwarf is Mim and the spear is Aeglos. One points to first letter, and two-thirds of Aeglos is AEGL. Impaled means inside, or in.

Or in other words, M+aegl+in

That works. I was going with AEGL inside a word one letter on from Mim, so MIN.

Ring-slinger points to Green Lantern, which is abbreviated to GL. Attending is in, and we both know what first part of the clue means.

Entirely correct; I now want to see a movie about Dr. Mae West, Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

Right, it looks like Pervinca has got 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7. So there's three left:

TERPENE + Li.

Uggggh, terpenes. They're the worst.

(Actually I don't think I've ever worked with terpenes. Technically I've probably ruined some clothes with them, though!)

And it's yours. Did you enjoy it at least? Or was it a failure on that account too?

It wasn't a failure on any account; I have to agree that I pay a lot more attention to the Queens of Numenor than their place in history warrants. And it was fun to play the 'I know the answer, now how do we get there?' game from both sides.

It isn't mine. It's Huinesoron's!

Oh yeah that's technically true. ^_^ Ummm, give me a little while. It's not so easy when you have to come up with multiple answers...

Amroth sailed 'far out to see'; he counts. Ar-Pharazon had a big ship, Idril sailed to Valinor, and so did Elwing (though she started further out to sea). Aragorn sailed on Umbar in service to Ecthelion. All the characters are actual mariners, though only one of the remaining two was necessarily any good at it.

1: Minastir?

Are you just guessing sailors now? None of those.

In 1, you need to find two words that would fit into the ellipsis.

In 5, you're looking for someone really known for their boat connection, but by an uncommon name of theirs. Spotting the straight clue might also help.
