Aha! Plymouth Colony was settled by the Pilgrims from the Mayflower, and a middling shade is grey. So #1 could be either GREY PILGRIM, or MITHRANDIR if you prefer the Sindarin.

For #3, a long trek may be a march. There's only a few things starting with March, and one of them is the surname MARCHBUCK, which ends with the first American currency unit available as a note.

Marchbuck is given by Tolkien as a more accurate translation of Brandagamba, the surname he translated Brandybuck in the books. I don't know what the Washington-Jefferson connection is, though.

The obvious one to go with Washington and Jefferson would be Adams; after that I think Franklin and Hamilton are the two listed by Wikipedia as 'key', but who are also actually prominent in pop culture.

None of which gets me anywhere, since the only March- terms I can think of would involve Founding Fathers named Warden or Maedhros.

(I would move to the universe where the latter was true like a shot.)

It's hard to see how 5 could be anything other than IRMO.

So I'll have a shot ... his other name is LORIEN ... so is his land and a land greatly revered by GIMLI.

And FRODO needed the gardens of LORIEN in Valinor in order to fully heal?

Morsul the Dark
08-24-2019, 04:36 AM
Sure, let’s go with that. Because it’d be embarrassing if I thought he lived in Lorien meaning Lothlorien where Frodo and Gimli both traveled through.

Pervinca Took
08-24-2019, 06:10 AM
He might. Sneaky devils, those Valar. But anyway, Gimli sailed West and near to Valinor too.

I think the final one is LANGSTRAND. Long strand with O changed to A, as per the fruity hints. Was Langstrand known for monsoons? Or just sea spray?

I guess Gimli and Frodo both crossed the Langstrand at some point?

Which two puppets make up IRMO, Morsul?

Morsul the Dark

Lang strand is close but not correct. It is close it has to do with water and is something both directly deal with in fotr.

THEME: THE FELLOWSHIPS' FATHERS

Well done, Morsul and Urwen!

And over to Morsul.

Midge Ure: writer of Ultravox's 'Vienna' and co-writer of Band Aid's famous 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'

Morsul the Dark

I never would’ve gotten the Midge one. I was stuck on Midge being a gnat and trying to make tang work. I’ll have to think a bit before posting one. I really enjoyed these they were super fun!

Might be a bit easy but honestly I’m in love with a few of these clues so I couldn’t resist.

1. See With with centers of activity would reveal these overweight friends
2. Brass Players are always welcome guests.
3. None to be had unless speaking on 4.
4. A piece of boiled leaf is quite the venture.
5. Truly a pleasure if one replaces their pleas with trees.
6. Very Matt Smith-Like with a little extra to follow
7. A dedication of direction that goes on and on.

8. A Single Disgusting expression
9. If you could see multiple raps at the door the long of the short of it, it would be this incredulous fellow.
10. On the whole this whole affair could be said to be awaited to use a similar term.

10. EXPECTED.

8. ONE GROSS (Used to describe the amount of people invited to the special part of the party, with the farewell speech). (Considered a vulgar expression by many of the guests ('like goods in a package'), even without the modern usage of 'gross.'

#1: 'See, hear' means C, which we already knew (thanks to the successful parts of Urwen's guesses) was the first letter. Looking at the theme so far, I'm guessing CIRDAN for this clue... and sure enough, 'irdan' is an anagram of 'drain'.

#3: AUTUMN is the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' of Keats. I think Frodo went walking in autumn after his return?

#4: The initial P + 'suffering' suggests PAIN, which is plain (a land) - L... but how that's 'its first scenery' I don't know.

#6: LANE anagrammed + OR = ELANOR. (I knew it had to be her, but Urwen's inclusion of 'or' in Dora showed me how.)

#9: Could this be as simple as BOX?

11. French valley sighs in confusion for him.

Frodo feels more disposed towards wandering in the AUTUMN (we're told this when he is preparing to leave the Shire for Rivendell).

PAIN is SPAIN minus S (the 'first' of scenery).

I'll let you have BOX OF EARTH. :) To refer to the riddle I was alluding to, this also contains (potential) golden treasure. I really should have picked up on that before!

#7: Ah, of course: 'call carriers' is RINGBEARERS.

#8: I suspect that we're looking for the German for 'land' or 'a land', which could be 'ein Land', or something like 'Grund' or 'Boden'. I don't know what 'a road beneath' means (unless it's a bridge?).

#10: I really want this to be Romans + NU, but I can't make a character name from that. There doesn't seem to be a specific common name for northern Ukraine itself.

#11: This has been pretty much confirmed as Loire + [ah/uh/eh], which... doesn't get me very far. Most of 'Loire' appears in both Elrond and Gildor's name, but then you get random consonants left over.

And this leaves Primula or Gilraen as the last one and the last two. I'd say Gilraen is 3, based on Lady of the lamp clue, but I know Pervinca likes Frodo.

FINDUILAS: Locate two subject pronouns, we hear, and send back Spanish salt for her.

EGLANTINE: Chaucer's Prioress reincarnates in the Shire?

No, Gilaren is the password. This only leaves Primula, as Legolas and Gimli's mothers were never mentioned, and Eru had no spouse.

How do we get Primula from Florence Nightingale, though?

Also, although I didn't think of this when making the clue, it was said of her child that 'he [might] become like a glass filled with a clear light for eyes to see that can.' So she was the lady of the lamp, in a figurative sense.

1. Skateboarding prankster gets disoriented within a sound sensor.
2. There’s a big cat interviewing for a job. If they get the job it’ll be a big mix up
3. My friend, Mr. Eckhart, who played Harvey Dent, is sailing.
4. Herzog tells me this feathered appendage very much floats.
5. A truncated prison story being followed by Burgandy is in this Spiegel article

1. EamBar

Yes, but you don't have to solve it all by yourself!

Try whichever clues take your fancy.

Not ALL will be obviously Tolkienian at first, but there is a good reason for this, which I will not disclose now because it would spoil the puzzle. But some are, and it will all make sense in the end.

ION is correct for that element of the clue. The answer to this one is something we get in Tolkien's works/world, but in our world as well. This is true of several of the answers.

For 2 and 3, think of some of the crafts and wiles we use when creating the clues. :D For 2, G55 was right in using RAM for the ewe's consort.
