FINROD: A befuddled dwarf amid two notes reveals him.
BEREN: A dwarf changes vowels for him.
EDRAHIL: Sturdy within untruth? It returns for him.
HUOR: Greek 17th, in a spin, receives the vowel for him.
HURIN: A german note precedes destruction in a spin for him.
TURGON: He sounds like you're gone after tea.

Why is this quote incorrect?

I never said the quote was incorrect.

The ANSWER, though, is incorrect for this puzzle, where you have to fulfil the cryptic parts of the clue as well as the straight and themed parts.

And there could be several places to which a character did not go or did not return.

There is a specific, text-referenced reason for each answer, though. For example, Gloin at the feast in Rivendell tells Frodo he must go and see Dale now that it is restored to glory. Frodo says he will, if he ever gets the chance, but as we know, he never does.

THEME: Places one or more people (fairly notably/significantly) did not go or return to, (either on a particular occasion or ever, and sometimes in spite of intention and/or invitation).

The Dark Elves never sailed west, so did not visit Tuna or Valinor.
Elendil could not go back to any part of Numenor once it was under the sea (unless he'd invented a very powerful snorkel).
Frodo never visited Dale, although Gloin invited him to.
Aragorn never went to Mordor (at least, not before the Ring was destroyed), although he would have gone there with Frodo had Merry and Pippin not needed rescuing (as it seemed).
Bilbo never visited Gondor, although he was, of course, invited to A and A's wedding (too old; packing such a bother). Frodo would always have been welcome back there, but he was too deeply hurt and sailed west.

Through common sense.

You can often work out clues if you take a little time away and come back to them fresh, instead of trying to bludgeon them all to death at once.

I used to do cryptic crosswords before going to sleep. There would nearly always be a few I couldn't do. Then I'd look at them the next evening when I wasn't so tired, or in the morning if it was a weekend, see the answer, and think 'Of course!'

But if you MUST solve it instantly, what did India acquire between itself and Pakistan and (then) East Pakistan when she was partitioned?

Well done, especially considering that it was the whole of Numenor Elendil did not return to, because it physically wasn't there, (or above the water, at least), and he couldn't. But as the whole also meant each part, I made this answer Hyarrostar, because I needed an H.

14. Note quaint fruit with an unusual core, after an article here. (Pippin).

* Probably/possibly

THEME: Places one or more people (fairly notably/significantly) did not go or return to, (either on a particular occasion or ever, and sometimes in spite of intention and/or invitation).

The Dark Elves never sailed west, so did not visit Tuna or Valinor.

Elendil could not go back to any part of Numenor once it was under the sea (unless he invented a very powerful snorkel).

Frodo never visited Dale or Erebor, although Gloin invited him.

Aragorn never went to Mordor (at least, not before the Ring was destroyed), although he would have gone there with Frodo had Merry and Pippin not needed rescuing (as it seemed).

'Good morning!' said Bilbo. `Feel ready for the great council?' `I feel ready for anything,' answered Frodo. `But most of all I should like to go walking today and explore the valley. I should like to get into those pine-woods up there.' He pointed away far up the side of Rivendell to the north. 'You may have a chance later,' said Gandalf. `But we cannot make any plans yet.' … I suppose he never went in the end. He might have, but once the weight of Middle-earth was truly on his shoulders …? It's said that he spent as much time as possible with Bilbo. Would Bilbo have been up to exploring pine woods?

Bilbo never visited Gondor, although he was, of course, invited to A and A's wedding (too old; packing such a bother). Frodo would always have been welcome back there, but he was too deeply hurt and sailed west.

I believe Thrain meant to enter Moria, but he was waylaid and died in the pits of Dol Guldur.*

I think if you sit back and think about it for a while, you'll realise that 'if you're not going to play games with me then stay off the site' is a... well, frankly terrible message to be giving out.

Nothing gives you the right to police my usage of the forum. In the spirit of cooperation, however: when you see me appear for a minute or two (or five) and disappear, it's because I've pulled up the Downs on my phone to see if there's any new posts to read in the top few sub-forums. Sometimes I'll also click through to the most recent thread in Quizzes, usually to see how the password's going, but I'm not going to try and reply to anything on a phone keyboard unless it really jumps out and grabs me.

If you're seeing me on for a long time, it's probably because I've forgotten to close the tab on my phone. It happens.

As for 'more free during summer' - sadly, work doesn't follow the holidays we all got used to at school and uni. I'm still stuck in my office five days a week, and with the good weather to hand, we can finally go out places at the weekends. It's nice.

Maybe people need a break now and then? There is such a thing as burnout!

Posting things like that will make people not want to come back at all.

Grievances in another thread really should be kept to that thread. Apart from anything else, no-one new will want to join in if all they see is bickering.

This is supposed to be fun, and a hobby.

Huinesoron
07-02-2019, 03:06 AM
But let's move on, yes?

Good idea; sorry.

So we're down to three clues:

???F??? A German baptism unit and a spy, note! How it all twists around here! (Tolkien).
???A??? Leave him in singularly dire straits, when they all mingle here? (Boromir).
???G??? Note quaint fruit with an unusual core, after an article here. (Pippin).

Boromir notably was not seen again in Minas Tirith, and I can see that name contains all of STRAIT... and the leftover letters spell HIM IN. So MINAS TIRITH.

Where did Pippin not go? I feel like this might be tied up in their various adventures around Rohan. I thought it might be something from his chat with Bergil, but the proposal there was to travel to Lossarnach, which doesn't have a G in it.

And Tolkien? I do seem to faintly recall a 'I have never visited', but I'm wondering if this might be more of a 'my father never came back to the story of [whatever]'. In which case the obvious answer would be the Fall of Gondolin, but I can't see how to pull that from the clue.

A 'German baptism unit' could be a way of saying 'the German for "font"', which appears to be [Tauf]becken.

Great answer, but ...

... Pippin really wanted to go somewhere specific at one point, but he wasn't alone, and the others did not agree to it, so they didn't.

Well done hS for getting MINAS TIRITH ... maybe the hardest one. It is, indeed, HIM IN STRAIT scrambled.

I've checked everything, and no name fits.

If 'checked everything' means looked at synonym websites, I'm not surprised you haven't found anything.

If it isn't on Tolkien Gateway, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

You might also try following the order of the elements in the clue, because I always put things in the order they appear in the answer, unless there's an anagram indicator.

So HALE is right, but it needs a little scrambling. And something needs to go before it.

It's not that hard. It's an answer we've had quite recently.

'What a load of *****!' A modern expression, meaning rubbish/nonsense/no good.

Or

''This film is *****!'

This one has no theme, I guess, then.

I think it does, and I think I know both the theme and the password.

If #4 is TELEPORNO...

... then the password is PARTNERS, the theme is married couples, and the remaining two answers are names of Aragorn and Rosie respectively.

(I'm kind of drawn to TELCONTAR for #6, since it includes most of 'train', but it's only most, and 'telco' looks tricky to get 'jealousy' from.)

Ah, 6 is A + ENVY + TRAIN = ENVINYATAR, 'the Renewer', or Aragorn at his most Jesusy.

A jealousy over a locomotive is, indeed, A TRAIN ENVY.

OSIER - I = ROSE. (You lose the initial of 'incentive').

The fact that I ran TUOR backwards instead of using a different name and used SILVER-FOOT because Celebrindal did not fit was a big clue to the theme being partners ... and why would I do that if I were not trying to fit answers to a theme?

DAUR: He’s not nearly as stern as he sounds.
MR UNDERHILL: He failed to meet her, we hear, beneath Henry Irving’s lissom larches. (Initially).
???R???: For him: an actress from ‘Alfie’ – pale warmth circulates - and a fireplace sings differently, and in disharmony.
IORHAEL: French king returns – hear a word of praise for him!

PASSWORD: MAURA
THEME: FRODO

Not master. What do you drain lettuce or boiled veg in?

Also, you need an expression of surprise for the 'Goodness me!' to begin it with ... although 'Ma' is actually right for the 'my' bit.

Cormacolindor?

I do see two final bits, but not 'goodness me' bit.

CORMACOLINDO: ‘Goodness me, my lettuce-draining implement!’ we seem to hear him cry, (roughly speaking).

COR! (An expression of surprise. Is it just a British expression, I wonder?)

Just knock the end off to get the singular. 'Cormacolindor' on the Field of Cormallen referred to both Frodo and Sam as The Ringbearers.

The elements, though, are (Eleanor) BRON + WAN + HEAT + A + HEARTH - E + D (sings a different note/tune - change note letter for a different note).

(I meant the original 'Alfie,' with Michael Caine). ;)

The original password was FRODO, but I'd have had to get the F from ELF-FRIEND, which is good and true, but perhaps not quite as specific as CORMACOLINDOR/RINGBEARER.

Over to you! Well done.

I can't make another riddle just now, I'm afraid.

My well of themed passwords is quickly drying up. It'll be a while until I make the next one.

1. Her physical condition is haywire.
2. Temporary provision of money reveals her (chaotically).
3. A nasal in the middle of fractured bird claw, for him.
4. Note, he is unyielding, in turmoil.

Pervinca, where u at?

Huinesoron

All I see is a bunch of anagrams I can't get anything out of.

#2 seems likely to include 'loan', and #3 is probably talon + n, but I'd have to resort to brute-force attacking them with a searchable database to get anything else out of them. I don't really want to do that; it feels like cheating.

(Which is why I personally usually try to give a moderately specific straight clue. Different clue styles, &c &c. This is fine and probably cleverer clues than mine. :))

I am at the same stage as Huinesoron - stuck at loan and talon.

Only possibility I see for the password is HUAN, but maybe it's an elvish word and not Huan at all.

What if it's TALON+M?

I tried that but didn't come up with anything.

...

TOLMAN?
