Stupid, stupid me!

It's Amon Ereb!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress
01-25-2005, 02:56 AM
Why of course it is...

Relisted questions and answers:

1. Goblin-Cleaver = there’s one for meat, and one for scrambling the short world contained.

2. Legolas = young lady lawyer takes a shot in the dark

3. Iris = Deep purple sword-bearer of Ithilien

4. Nessa = Ye gods! It's Elton John’s single sensational sister

5. Gildor = Airy entrance for merpeople, and "well met" at that

6. Amon Ereb = Beer Mona! I’ve been lonely far too long.

7. Labadal = Boy precedes one small ball walking backwards.

Only one more...

And since it's hard, and not a very good clue, here's a mini guide to solving it.

Shorten a synonym for "world" add a synonym for "contain", scramble.

That gives you part 1 of a hyphenated word. The other part of the word often follows "meat" in the same hyphenated fashion. As in, "meat-__________"

Sophia

Turambar

1. Ainu. For "Star-namer", see Silm.

2. "Landed" means a land in the past. ;) "Diminutive king" is a clue I used once on this very thread.

3. Place. You must find a guy who played both Iceman and Batman, then get his first name. Then find out where to put that with the rest of the clues.

If more hints are needed, more guesses are required. :p

I shall guess Ladros again! But I think I have it for real this time. ;)

#2: Ladros

- A boy is a lad.
- Diminutive sounds like Tar-Minyataur, aka Elros, a king. Take away the "el"= star and you are left with ros.
- Thus I got Ladros, a land of old.

Idril as the "star-namer's wife"? I would assume that Tuor named Earendil...

Nilpaurion Felagund
02-08-2005, 08:52 PM
"Star-namer" is not one who gives name to a star. It was the one who said that there shall be a new star.

The password requires de-anagramming. ;)

Here's a new one:

1. A letter returned to a Greek goddess (memory’s daughter!) becomes something that (in M.E.) only hobbits build.

2. "Flower" that decorates Rohan.

3. Bedlam began on the 27th, when he spoke in tongues.

4. Sat aimless about the silent fallen one in the woods?

5. What may be passed by the irresponsible, when aged, became a local leader.

6. Suffered an exophthalmic demise.

(Nilpaurion nances around like the Elf he is)

2. "Flower" http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/D.gif that decorates Rohan. (Turambar)
Erm . . . shouldn't it be "flôwer"? :p Entwash?

5. Haldad?

Turambar
02-14-2005, 08:24 AM
Not the Entwash, though you're on the right track. There is a sort-of-pun in #2 (on the name of the "flower").

#5 - like all the clues in this puzzle except #6, perhaps - is cryptic (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=73530&postcount=7) . You have to ask yourself, "what is passed by the irresponsible?" Or, inversely, what do responsible people not pass?

Turambar

Here are some hints:

1. A Greek letter. Which Greek goddesses were the daughters of memory?

2. "Flower" = river. There's a pun in the clue on the river's name.

3. Tengwar.

4. "About" = scramble pointer.

5. What do responsible people not pass?

6. Look up "exophthalmic" An evil character in LotR died this way.

7. "Around" = scramble pointer.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress
02-17-2005, 09:43 AM
Well, I'll hazard a guess here, half laughingly:

3. Lambe

4. Lassemista

5. Oldbuck

6. Radbug

7. Nevrast

The Saucepan Man
02-17-2005, 11:47 AM
5. What may be passed by the irresponsible, when aged, became a local leader.Responsible people do not pass the buck.

Aged is old.

The Saucepan Man
02-17-2005, 11:53 AM
Sorry for the consecutive posting - working these out as I go.

7. Taverns around the heedless one's original home?Assuming that the heedless one is Turgon, who did not heed Tuor's warning, his original home was Nevrast, an anagram of "Taverns".

I'm guessing that the Password is Mallorn.

Turambar

Thank you, Saucepan Man. FYI, Radbug's eyes were squeezed out (hence, "exophthalmic").

Which makes #2 Adorn - a river and a synonym for "decorate".

Turambar

MALLORN is the Password, and Nevrast is correct for #7.

The Saucepan Man
02-17-2005, 12:45 PM
3. Bedlam began on the 27th, when he spoke in tongues.Contained within "Bedlam began" is Lambe, which means tongue and is (I assume) the 27th symbol of the Tengwar alphabet.

Turambar
02-17-2005, 01:45 PM
Correct again. :)

The last one is perhaps a bit obscure, but it's in LotR and, as I said, is a scramble.

EDIT: perhaps felled would be more accurate than fallen.

The Saucepan Man
02-17-2005, 02:34 PM
4. Sat aimless about the silent fallen one in the woods? Then it must be Lassemista, one of the rowan trees of Quickbeam's home felled by Saruman's Orcs, and an anagram of "Sat aimless".

02-17-2005, 05:34 PM

And Sophia. :D

The Saucepan Man

Thank you Turambar. :)

A bit different this one. Each clue is made up of the first letter or letters of a word or phrase associated with a number. You need to solve each clue to find the number associated with it. To give a non-Middle-earth example, if the clue were HITD this could stand for Hours in the Day, in which case the answer would be 24. All the clues below are Middle-earth-related.

Once you have all the numbers, you need to add them all up to produce another number. The password is the clue that would be associated with this answer (ie the first letter(s) of a word or phrase associated with it).

Are you still with me? Oh well, let's see how it goes.

1) RFEK
2) ROTW
3) SOF
4) BR

6) HOTE
7) GOG
8) FS

#6 HOTE -> Houses of the Edain, 3?

#9 S -> Silmarils, 3?

Nilpaurion Felagund
02-17-2005, 10:56 PM
2. The only thing I recognise is "of the West."

3. Sons of Fëanor - 7

5. Trees of Valinor - 2

7. Gates of Gondolin - 7

That's adding up--->Council of Elrond?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress
02-18-2005, 04:13 AM
#4 BR -> Black Riders, 9?

#2 ROTW -> may either be Rulers of the World? (in which case I'd say 1, Manwe or Eru), or Rulers of the West? (in which case I'd go for 9, the Aratar)

The numbers I'm totalling up now (minus my weird guesses for number 2) = 34. Inclusive of my weird guess for 2 = 43. I'm wondering whether the secret total number might be 50, the age of Bilbo and Frodo at the beginning of their respective journeys? (AOBAF -> Age of Bilbo and Frodo? :p)

Saucy, don't quite know what kind of format you're looking for as a password.... of course, don't know if my guesses are right either ;)

The Saucepan Man

4) Black Riders = 9
5) Trees Of Valinor = 2
6) Houses Of The Edain = 3
7) Gates Of Gondolin = 7
8) FS
9) Silmarils = 3

Glad to see that you've got the idea. :)

Saucy, don't quite know what kind of format you're looking for as a passwordTo use my previous example, if the numbers added up to 24, the Password might be HITD (Hours in the Day).

You have to get the correct letters.

2. Rohan’s old one got confused, and became an enigma by another name.Taking the "R" from Rohan and "a" (ie one) and mixing them with "old" gives Orald, another name for that well-known enigma, Tom Bombadil.

4. What will Man do subsequent to death - did even this one know the answer?Mandos probably didn't know the answer, but he is to be found in "will Man do subsequent".

6. Even with his backward intelligence, he invented letters.Another word for intelligence is "wit" which, when written backwards, is Tiw - another name for the Tengwar alphabet.

The Saucepan Man

How 'bout Incanus, then? (Suni engulfing Can.)Well, I had Sunni engulfing Ca (California) and then reversed, but your reasoning is much the same and produces the same result - which is of course correct.

Alas, Ekkaia is not (although I suspect that you are thinking along the right lines).

For ease of reference, I'm repeating the clues, with solutions to date, here:

1. Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?
2. Armenelos: Reforms are solemn for royal city.
3. Revere Chetwood's centre as an ancient and mysterious site.
4. Ringlo: Musician takes in first light at river.
5. Incanus: Branch of religion returned engulfing State in the south.
6. Middle-earth’s cyberspace?

Edit: FAERIE is indeed the Password. Well done Turambar! :)

But neither fror nor Undeeps are correct. Then again, Turambar is getting very warm with his reasoning for #1.

Encircling Sea for #6?

The Saucepan Man
03-29-2005, 02:01 PM
No more correct answers to add, I'm afraid.

Some hints:

#1 Turambar has already mentioned part of the answer in explaining the reasoning behind one of his answers.

#3 The word "centre" is an important part of this clue.

#6 What sort of space might an e-mail be sent from, to or through?

Turambar
03-30-2005, 10:15 AM
D'oh! I couldn't figure out why duck was in there (#1).

"Roast duck" = FIRE DRAKE. Absurdly simple, like most riddles, when you see the answer.

#3 still has me mystified. Thinking "aloud": The real Chetwood has no centre that I know of. Is the cryptic centre "TW" or "ETWO"? You can get ENTWOOD (an ancient and mysterious place, beginning with "E") from the latter by adding NOD, but how does this relate to "revere"?

Possibly silly guess for #6: Emyn Muil? (E-muil) :p

The Saucepan Man
03-30-2005, 11:23 AM
"Roast duck" = FIRE DRAKE.But of course! :D

1. Fire-Drake: Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?

#3 You are on the right track, but need to expand your search beyond Chetwood.

#6 Again, you are thinking along the right lines, but look back at my previous hint.

Celebrian
03-30-2005, 04:53 PM

1. Fire-Drake: Roast duck on the menu at the Withered Heath?
2. Armenelos: Reforms are solemn for royal city.
3. Erech: Revere Chetwood's centre as an ancient and mysterious site.
4. Ringlo: Musician takes in first light at river.
5. Incanus: Branch of religion returned engulfing State in the south.
6. Eregion: Middle-earth’s cyberspace?

1: Ents

3: Gwindor. "Like roaring wind or waves...". He did indeed fight at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

6: Orcrist. Crist (Christ) is actually three poems, which cover major episodes in Christ's involvement with mankind: the Advent, the Ascension and the Day of Judgement. Christ I, actually a number of separate lyrics, may have been written by the poet Cynewulf; Christ II is signed by him, and Christ III has been argued to be his work, although this is a bone of scholarly contention.

Turambar

Hail Dayspring, brightest of angels,
sent to men upon Middle-earth,
and the sun's righteous radiance,
of a brilliance exceeding the stars;
you by your own self continually illumine every hourChrist I, lines 104-8, tr. S.A.J. Bradley.

Tolkien thought that Earendel was a name for one of the stars, possibly Venus as the morning star. Although here it refers to Christ, he notes that in the Blickling Homilies (mid tenth century) it is used to refer to John the Baptist.

1. Raider ranks high around Mordor.
2. Angrod - Worm destroyed elf.
3. Lamedon - Injured professor in Gondor.
4. Beleg - Maybe legends of the past can reveal the faithful friend.
5. Athelas - Leaders of Last Alliance pursued two articles to a point, and found a healer.
6. Really good times, and better than the Leap of Beren.
7. Incanus - We follow the ancient mountain dweller, wizard!

3 . . . 2 . . . . 1 . . .

1: Corsair. Coarse air ranks very highly around Mordor; in fact it stinks to high heaven. A corsair is a raider. Alternatively, Uruk could answer the same question.
2: Angrod. Simply an anagram of Dragon (worm).
6: Overlithes. Beren's leap was lithe, and Overlithe was a particularly celebrated occasion.
7: Incanus We (us) follow the ancient mountain-dweller (Inca). The answer is a wizard (Gandalf). Of course there is an 'n' that I haven't accounted for.

Sorry - I thought this thread had died.

Well, in case anyone still cares, Angrod and Incanus are correct. (Squatter - "ancient mountain dweller" = Incan.)

"Corsair" is not correct for #1 - I think this clue violates classic cryptic clue rules, but it's a scramble, and "raider" is the straight clue.

#6 - a pun of sorts.

The Saucepan Man

1. Raider ranks high around Mordor."ranks high" mixed around = Grishnakh, a raider from Mordor.

6. Really good times, and better than the Leap of Beren. The Spring of Arda is better than the leap of Beren, and was a really good time to boot.

If I am correct, the password must be GALBASI, the forerunner of Gamgee.

Time for a new puzzle, I think:

1. Feanor’s first cry of sorrow on finding place of havens.
2. You heard nine agitating for calming influence.
3. Young queen backs up state-of the-art storage medium.
4. Disadvantaged lord makes mark initially in Rohan.
5. It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

Hello Samwise. :)

:(You heard nine agitating for calming influence.

Ringwraiths?No, I am afraid not.

As is my wont, the clues are cryptic, although one word or phrase in each (either at the beginning of the end) provides a literal clue.

Mnemosyne

I am pondering over the clues; alas, as an American I had to learn cryptics as a second language and am unskilled in the art.

But am not intending to let this one pass without a fight.

In case it helps, here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=73530&postcount=7) is a guide to solving cryptic clues which I put together ... good lord ... over six years ago ...

Mithalwen
10-09-2009, 10:30 AM
Well I learnt cryptics at my mother's knee (literally) but it isn't helping much. Though if it helps anyone get started flower usually indicates a river, agitating would suggest an anagram, backs up a reversal of letters, first and initially..initials but not if they are part of the "straight" part of the clue. At the moment I am lacking in inspiration of how to apply the theory.. but I am thinking... (slow process - especially after three days solid gawping at spreadsheets).

The Saucepan Man
10-26-2009, 05:58 PM
Anyone?

Mith's analysis of the cryptic conventions used in my clues is spot on, in case that is any help ...

Mithalwen
10-27-2009, 05:56 AM
Oooh after some intensive training (making a point of doing what I can of the Telegraph crossword for a week or so) , I think I have the first:

1, Feanor’s first cry of sorrow on finding place of havens -falas

Feanor's initial F + alas, a cry of sorrow. Fairly confident since Sauce's clues always work tidily. :D

The Saucepan Man
10-27-2009, 07:22 AM
The training paid off, Mith. You are correct. :)

1. Falas - Feanor’s first cry of sorrow on finding place of havens.
2. You heard nine agitating for calming influence.
3. Young queen backs up state-of the-art storage medium.
4. Disadvantaged lord makes mark initially in Rohan.
5. It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

Any more for any more?

Mnemosyne
10-28-2009, 01:01 AM
4. Disadvantaged lord makes mark initially in Rohan.

Brandir: brand (for mark), plus i. and r. And Brandir was certainly disadvantaged, and not just physically!

The Saucepan Man
10-28-2009, 03:21 AM
Spot on with that one, Mnemosyne. Well done. :)

1. Falas - Feanor’s first cry of sorrow on finding place of havens.
2. You heard nine agitating for calming influence.
3. Young queen backs up state-of the-art storage medium.
4. Brandir - Disadvantaged lord makes mark initially in Rohan.
5. It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

Next?

Mithalwen

Not so sure on this but I think 2 might well be Uinen.
You heard nine agitating for calming influence.
U= you heard
inen= agitation (anagram) of nine.

Uinen was a calming influence on Osse.

Since I am posting anyway I should give full credit for clue one... I had just thought of falas as the elvish for coast and so generally a place for havens but looking for something else last night I saw a reference to the Havens of the Falas in Beleriand which I had quite forgotten about.

The Saucepan Man

You're on a roll, Mith. :)

1. Falas - Feanor’s first cry of sorrow on finding place of havens.
2. Uinen - You heard nine agitating for calming influence.
3. Young queen backs up state-of the-art storage medium.
4. Brandir - Disadvantaged lord makes mark initially in Rohan.
5. It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

The 'calming influence' clue is perhaps a little obscure, but I didn't want to make it too easy.

Only two more to go ...

I don't know about that ...very erratic if I were a horse there would be a stewards enquiry.. My only guess for 3 is Morwen...

Backwards is New ROM (read only memory) which is rather a state-of-the-art storage medium...

However something doesn't quite add up about it.

Anyway there's no harm in guessing, is there?

Anyway there's no harm in guessing, is there? No, not at all.

However something doesn't quite add up about it.Why not? It adds up perfectly as far as I can see. :)

1. Falas - Feanor’s first cry of sorrow on finding place of havens.
2. Uinen - You heard nine agitating for calming influence.
3. Morwen - Young queen backs up state-of the-art storage medium.
4. Brandir - Disadvantaged lord makes mark initially in Rohan.
5. It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

I see why Morwen but not why she is a young queen.

Gah Morwen of Lossarnach, Queen of Rohan....

The Saucepan Man

Spot on, Menmo. Now, you're in the swing of it. :)

5. Sirion - It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

Ok, so what's the Password, folks? (And no, it's not Fumbs :D )

I am in awe.... I was going to pretend I was keeping a low profile because I didn't want to set the next one but really I was no where near. Have to admit that I thought that it would start with e because the only trace of a word in Tolkien starting was a Qenya (not Quenya) pp of Fume..fumbe.

I didn't think bumf took a plural and it isn't very Tolkienesque..

I am getting a lot better at the Telegraph one though....

No, not Turin. But it is something that each of the words has in common ...

Edit: As we have started a new page, I will repeat the clues here.

5. Sirion - It is charged by knight before flower emerges.

Association with water? Tol Morwen and Tol Brandir are both islands...

Mithalwen
11-09-2009, 06:31 AM
Obscure brands of car...? I know that there is a Daihatsu Sirion.... there was probably a SSang-yong Uinen 4WD, the Audi Morwen would with grim germanic efficiency give you 8 hours warning of its demise... the Brandir would have perpetual balancing issues whereas the Falas would be designed to boost the egos of really insecure men...

The Saucepan Man

Tol?

The Saucepan Man
11-09-2009, 07:39 PM
Tol?Bingo! :)

Taking a very wild stab here...Not too wild. You can put 'Tol' before each of the answers to find an island:

Tol Falas - A large island that stood beyond the Ethir Anduin in the Bay of Belfalas.
Tol Uninen - A small island that stood off the coasts of Númenor, in the bay of Rómenna.
Tol Morwen - An island that stood off the coasts of Middle-earth after the drowning of Beleriand at the end of the First Age.
Tol Brandir - The tall, sheer-sided isle that stood in the River Anduin between the hills of Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw, above the Falls of Rauros.
Tol Sirion - The island on the upper reaches of the River Sirion where Finrod Felagund built the tower of Minas Tirith, renamed Tol-in-Gaurhoth after its capture by Sauron.

The thread is yours.

That was my guess, but I honestly could not remember there being a Tol Uinen. And it would figure that you'd get a werewolf reference in there...

Okay, but it might be a leetle while... This is the first time this American has made any cryptics (though I might throw in a couple of straight clues).

The Saucepan Man

This is the first time this American has made any cryptics ...Well, the clues don't have to be cryptic. I think that they have become a feature of the Password game because many of those who have set the last few puzzles have made the clues cryptic.

I would relish some cryptic clues to solve, but it's up to you. :)
